  • Inti Punku
or "sun gate" in the Quechua language
is a challenging yet rewarding hike in the Sacred Valley.
Inti Punku is thought to be the official entrance to Machu Picchu, as well as a place of worship for the Incas.
The hike goes from 2745 to 4000 meters above sea level, so be prepared for the difficult altitude. Bring plenty of water and coca leaves to chew.
Roundtrip, this hike took us about 4 hours.
We started from the trailhead in Cachiccata (across the river from Ollantaytambo). We took a slightly different route back, using the old Inca Quarry Trail.
At the top you might be rewarded with views of Apu Veronica (5800 meters above sea level) but we had lots of clouds. Still was an incredible view of the Sacred Valley.
