I started getting the "CHECK FUEL CAP" message after filling up my 06 Honda Civic. I read on a forum that it will typically go away after a few days ...well mine went away, only to be replaced by the "CHECK ENGINE" light. I found this video and did exactly what you said/showed and it fixed it. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. You saved me $$.

    Just a summary:
The gas cap costs ~$30 or $40
    1. Save money on that by taking the O-ring out of the gas cap and turning it around. This is the O-ring that comes in contact with the metal to form a seal.
    2. Before replacing the gas cap, clean the metal that the ring will come in contact with.
WARNING: DO NOT LET ANYTHING FALL INTO YOUR GAS TANK! Use only lint free rags.
    3. Optionally use a small amount of silicon brake caliper grease (if you have it on hand) on the metal that the O-ring comes in contact with.
    4. Drive your car. The light won't go off immediately. Give it a few drives, maybe two days tops. If the message won't shut off, get a new gas cap, this didn't work for you.

Just take a rag and wet it with AT-205 on the seal of the cap. Don't oversoak it....Just get the seal good and wet. Make sure the car is OFF. Wipe
the dirt off around the filler neck...PROBLEM SOLVED....NO MORE MESSAGE,NO NEW SEAL NO NEW CAP..........DONE It worked for me.

This reminds me of the time I saw Rick Barry on Fox Sports demonstrating his underhanded free throw technique ... six minutes of explanation, and three seconds of actually making the shot. The explanation could have easily been reduced to [less than] one minute. Oh ... and the viewer could actually HEAR Rick Barry, during his explanation.

He takes the O ring off the fuel cap and puts it back in the opposite way. Then, before screwing the fuel cap back in, he uses a small amount of metal cleaner followed by a tiny spec of silicone brake caliper grease to clean the fuel pipe opening. He also notes that the code may not go away until 3-4 drives unless you pull the battery, so don't panic right away.
