I agree with buying what your budget allows and buying local helps out your neighbors … that a big plus rather than ship in from somewhere else ! Love Big Joe wanting to help you !! And Cora just wanted some attention too . LOL You can tell the Bison are healthy and very satisfied! Great job .. keep on Ranchin

Great explanation. Thank you for the education. It's business just like raising a family. Growing our own vegetables, beans, and dual purpose chickens. I spend a little more money here and there on higher quality meats I can't raise to supplement. I know what my family is getting for their health, which saves me money in the long run.

We grew alfalfa and clover mix for hay to cut and bail for cattle growing up, we didn't keep the bull full time with the cows. Yes it was higher protein, but the pregnant cows needed it and so did the milk cows.

It’s certainly a science trying to sort out the husbandry of your Bison herd! It’s nice to watch how you’ve grown both in your herd and knowledge of their care.
I imagine you’ll be holding back on keeping little ones in the years to come with the costs associated with animal care. The problem is if there’s a bad crop growth one year … due to the drought everyone’s experiencing from year to year.
What I like about your farm is it’s clean and you guys take care of the livestock to the best of your ability.
    Thanks for sharing! 🙌🙏🦬🐓🐴

Awesome video, just as the previous one. Thanks for mentioning #32 and her baby. I wonder if she is still boss with all of those younger females with her? I know the bulls can seem like the stars of the show, but those mammas are special. It still hurts how Belle Starr had to mourn over her baby. She knew you had put her baby in your truck there at the end.
When you took the young mother's baby to the barn in the ATV. The young mother was beside herself. She was frantic. The other mother with the dead baby inside her, we don't know how she suffered. She came to you for help. Those were sad experiences. We recover and move on.
Take care of yourself and your family.

To think of it easier protein is the muscle builder/maintenance. The crude fat is the energy. The fiber is a filler/digestion. To much fiber/filler low in fat and protein they will be full but may not be able to body condition. They need the crude fat to stay warm. Corn is actually low in protein and high in fat. Soybeans are high in both protein and fat. Oats and barley are mid range protein and high in fat. Hopefully this kinda helps. It can get more complicated with the type of animal and what they are able to digest as well as the type of proteins and fats. Vitamins and minerals are what you need to watch for bone growth and strength.

It makes more sense to feed an animal what their accustomed to eat (native Prarie grasses) that their ancestors ate then to give them something that is still fairly new to them (alfalfa). They can eat it (we're in southern Idaho) & there's a few Bison Ranchers here & I know a lot feed the alfalfa. But that's mostly because we barely have native grasses out in the desert area's. Our grasses are Johnson, orchard & 1 other, it's getting as costly as alfalfa, especially if it's mixed. If I could get good hay as close as you are, I'd be all over it too 😊

If you want to build nitrogen into the soil then you need legumes. I dont think burning in as a first step is going to build organic nitrogen. Better way it to have an early fodder crop of legumes and turn them under, in fact on those perinneally ranched soils you probably turn the grasses under for a couple of years to get a true prairie quality soil back. In mean there is very little bioturbulation compared to native soils, and we have had some halacious droughts in the last 20 years and that drives oxygen deep into the soil and leads to the loss of organic material, particular with the invasive trees, they really cause clays to shrink, drives the organic material out of them.

@@CrossTimbersBison I saw that. But i think you need a magnitude more. I mean you could just fertilize but it will run off into you water retention pond a foul them up. Your AEA from OSU is giving you some good advice.
However if a soil is significantly deorganified, then it really just wants to make sandstone when compacted and has little water retention capacity. Even if you have really great soil, over ten to twenty years it will loose organic material if it is continually harvested for hay or seed. So for instance if I have ten contractor bags of compostable material, that then makes about 300 to 400 lbs of hydrated fine compost, that will decarboxylate to about 200 lbs over a period of a couple weeks or more, that would be able to restore the soil __maximally__ of about 100 square feet. And thats a decent soil that is still producing, urine seems to really turn the bactetia on. To that I can add an equal amount of soil conditioner (ground cypress bark) to further break it up and ammonium sulphate or dolomite to fix any pH problems. But if I take the heavy clay, the grey clay we have here that has undergone deorganification, nothing good will grow in it, in fact you have to work that clay several years before many plants will grow, and if you pot plants with even a small amount they die. Clays do expand and take up water, but not very well when they get past a certain point.
I watched yard after yard collapse this summer, significant damage to house foundations because the yards in many of these subdivision have select fill for top soil, people have no sand or organic material, tree roots suck all the water out of the soil which with "select fill" is 98% compaction, then run under the house and suck out all of the water in the clay, and around the foundations of the houses you see huge cavities were the clay used to be.
To get the roots deep you got to open up the soil. If you get the roots deep then your legumes nitrogen will also get deep and have a larger thickness layer of organic nitrogen. In addition if the soil is fairly loose (i.e you dont have to get your 300 lb cousin just to get a full shovel), you get more earthworm activity and this increases soil humus and also speeds up rooting and gets those roots deeper and prevents runoff. You got 500 lbs of animal hoof stepping on 10 square inches of ground at 50 psi, that ground needs a little help.
If you see anyone throwing out compostable material. leaf litter, grass clippings grab it grind it up and hydrate it and create 3 foot high piles, the nexy time you till up the soil put that compost on it and watch what happens the next year.

Don't forget to work with her, so when you start riding her it's not a shock & when something happens whether it is getting her hoofs done or if there is a emergency with cuts on her chest & legs. It would also help with boredom.

It never occurred to me that Bison could be a pollinator of grasslands. As far as they run about, isn't it possible that they act as grass pollinators? Those cubes are a great way to maneuver these guys. Bison crack!

Years ago, we were on vacation and stopped to see friends in Lawton. We went to a National Park where they had Bison. My mom picked up some Bison fur off the ground and told us she pulled it off a Bison! We were young and believed her.
We went to leave and the Bison tried to ram the car we were in, so we did get a little scared of the big babies.
