Just got mine done for the first time today. I was sweating it. Not because I thought it was going to be that bad. I've had more involved surgery, but I just get anxious about any hospital visit. It wasn't fun, but it really wasn't that bad either. Follow the diet, drink the swill when you're supposed to, and it all works out, so to speak. Definitely get the prep solution as cold as you can. Have some clear soda and hard candy on hand, and beef broth is good too up to the point where you have to stop everything the night prior - usually midnight it seems. The hot broth gave me the illusion I was eating something substantial and helped stave off the hunger a little bit. If you're not a meat eater, I supposed vegetable broth so long as it's clear. They offer the option of ondansetron (nausea meds) to take as well. I think it helped. Just one little pill half an hour or so prior to drinking the stuff the evening prior and morning of. It's well worth the peace of mind to get done.
@@kenofken9458 the day of the procedure, I was nervous. It was “twilight anesthesia”, meaning I wouldn’t be asleep all the way. I did all the right prep, the gastroenterologist put me at ease, the anesthesiologist asked me some questions, I was moved into a separate place, told to roll over to my side, saw the anesthesiologist open a medicine pack, put it into the IV pole, turn it to the right, then seconds later I felt sleepy. I woke up about 45 minutes later and it was over and everything okay. I could have driven home if I wanted to, that’s how great of a job the anesthesiologist did. But didn’t. Just ate a nice hearty dinner after starving myself for a day.
Hi from Canada. This explanation is totally different than my experience. I had to go through the cleansing procedure. However during the actual screening I was totally awake and watched the whole procedure on a monitor and was very thankful for that. It was very enlightening to see and I didn’t have any doubts about the health of my GI tract. Am going again soon and am hoping for the same procedure.
Here in the UK you are not anaesthetised for a colonoscopy. You can have sedation if you wish, or gas and air is available. I am having one soon and I will be able to watch it on a monitor, which I think is very interesting. It's my body, I want to see what it looks like from the inside!
I’m 16 and my doctor wants this done because of stomach issues I’ve had for a year and a half. My mom said she won’t make me but there is not a single bone in my body that wants this done. I have bawled my eyes out because the idea of it is so invasive. I don’t know what to do
I just had mine done today. Do it. I was scared/worried as well. I'm not in pain or anything. It was fast. The prep was the most annoying part, but even then it wasn't actually that bad as well. Good luck and don't let fear get you.
Just had my second Colonoscopy yesterday. Piece of cake procedure. The worse part is the prep solution and that's not bad at all. I used the Pedilyte - Berry Frost flavor and placed it in the refrigerator. Not bad at all. You have nothing to be worried about as far as the procedure goes. Check in Get undressed Get wheeled into the exam room Go to sleep Wake up 15 minutes later Go home and eat
I was scared too, have anxiety. Just had first one at 50 with upper endo and was not as bad as i had imagined. The whole experience was made better by tbw staff's kindness and understanding of my situation. So proud of myself for pushing through the anxiety, as they flund and removed 8 polyps and i have a family history of colon cancer
@@tayloranderson6051 For me, it was the exposed part that made me nervous. The procedure was a breeze. I was wide awake for it because I wanted to see exactly what the dr was seeing. I had 2 cystoscopies as well. Don't look that procedure up lol.
Does having a colonostomy done, remove the fecal matter stuck to the walls I f the colon? I know that fecal matter build up on the sides of the colon for years?
I was thinking the same thing before I had my procedure 4 years ago. Many snake oil salesmen will try to convince you that the average American has 5-10 pounds of fecal matter in their colon, which isn’t true. If that was the case, you’d lose quite a bit of weight during the prep.
@@Rico401Prov yep, so true if you have a normal, healthy body. Only the first 2-3 times will have solid matter. After that, it’s fluorescent yellow green liquid for hours. If it’s light yellow or straw-colored by the day of your prep, you’ve done the right thing.
@loumason6120 At 47, I had mine done for the first time six days ago in Arizona. This was also the first time I'd undergone anesthesia. I was very nervous. The prep they gave me was Gavilyte. The procedure and experience itself went exactly like they showed in the video. They gave me an oxygen mask, then had me roll onto my side. They told me they were starting the ansthesia, then I was out. The next "moment," I was waking up in the recovery room with the Dr., the nurse, and my wife. From the moment I was wheeled into the procedure room to the time I woke up was about 21 minutes. It was very quick, painless, and was nothing to worry about. The prep was definitely the worst part, but even that wasn't as bad as I'd imagined it would be. I just had to be in the bathroom for about 90 after taking it. It really does clean you out, and I found some peace of mind knowing that as well.
I personally haven't had one yet being only 44 years old. I'm from Canada and here the screenings apparently start at 50. There are apparently modern methods offered her such as a FIT test which is done at home or a flexible sigmoidoscopy which just examines the lower part of the colon. Not having had the first hand experience myself, I ask myself, how bad can a traditional colonoscopy and a traditional prep really be?
Hi, I did a cologuard home kit during the pandemic and I take my first colonoscopy on Monday. I'm watching my diet right now, reading the materials they gave, and I'm waiting on my prep solution.
Don't bother. I'm 59 and will never have one. This is another scare tactic for drs to make money. Out of how many of these are done do they find anything ?
Where is the anesthesiologist during the procedure? Is he/she always there to monitor and ensure the person is still breathing while the doctor is busy with the procedure?
I'm getting mine tomorrow..9 hours from now...was more worried about the prep.but it wasn't too bad.. 🍋🍋 flavour..getting sedated so hopefully be out of it 😮
Colonoscopies are unpleasant at best. I’ve had two in my life the second one most recently while the first one was twenty years ago. Never another. The drugs to provide comfort during the procedure I found unnerving. I was fully awake for the first one. I do not appreciate having blocks of my memory eliminated by these nasty drugs (propofol) used to induce sedation and block memory. The entire process is barbaric.
@@sasha48189 it went smooth. Not as bad as I thought. I was worried about the procedure. I was out. The hardest part is the prep. Drinking that awful concoction and being on the toilet all day! Good luck. 👍

This is pretty much exactly how mine went.
Cool thanks for the reassurance to never get this unnecessary procedure !!
Just had mine two days ago. The worst part was that godawful tasting Suprep and having to drink a liter of water chaser.
What I will never understand is how I was taken off the gurney and put into the recliner in the recovery room!

26 getting one for the first time tomorrow because of some stomach problems. Will update if I remember to on how it went.
@superbad655 how did it go what do I need to know I got a colonoscopy this Tuesday?
