Forgive me if you already know this, but in case you don't, it's an allusion to a beautiful Shaker hymn called "Simple Gifts." One of my favorite lines from the song too.
I'd forgotten the original hymn for *DECADES* until I heard JD sing this line. I learned the hymn in school when I was 6 or 7. I recall the song in its entirety _and_ the accompanying dance my class performed for some event... My K-8 school didn't have Shaker roots. It was secular, founded and lead by a nun (who split from a Catholic school over her disagreement with their teaching/discipline methods). She was an *incredible* person. Smart, caring, and independent, and although she stayed in the Catholic Church for life she never pressed others to be part of it (and the only time I saw her wear a habit was on her favorite holiday: Halloween). Edit: autocorrect F'ed up my (already crappy) grammar
@@jockslap I understand it as he wants to kill God. I'm pretty sure the knocking at the door is a reference to a bible verse in the book of Mathew, that basically says knock and I shall open (I being God). He wants to stab God with a knife. I think the opening line indicates that he is referring to a spiritual journey and the reference to the buffet is all the different 'religions' he's looked at but hasn't found anything that fulfils him. As he found no answers on his spiritual path he seeks vengeance and sought advice from the sages on the tacticians on special munitions (bullets to kill an immortal being type thing). I think the entire song is him deciding a knife would be the best way to do it.
John, you played in Dublin, Ireland, at the end you were walking through the dispersing audience. And I, without thinking, went running towards you. Reality set in just as I reached you and I stopped and panicked and ran away. You looked right at me. I can never forgive myself for getting so star struck and not asking you for your autograph and to tell you it was the best concert I'd ever been to. I hope you come back to Dublin after once the pandemic lifts. This new album has been cathartic for me, thank you. Sincerely, a very long standing fan
I'm surprised that I recognized John's voice, this is so different from previous Mountain Goats songs. It speaks to me. I have been into knives a long time although I didn't really start collecting them until after I retired. I think I need this CD.
This may be my new all time favorite song. Beautiful instrumentation and brilliant lyrics that can impose whatever meaning you bring to them. Truly a masterpiece.
The lighting in the thumbnail of this clip makes me think of the music video for This Year every time! Obv the facial hair was a bit different 15 yrs ago. Oh my lort!!!! How has it been that long????
I love this song and it's kinda humorous too. those five notes after the line "they specialized in non-conventional munitions" always makes me smile. the melody sounds so sweet. and the part about guys who wouldn't tell him their last names reminds me of Herman from the Simpsons, lol ruclips.net/video/9lFZquBi8y0/видео.html
It’s a gift to be simple, it’s a gift to be free

@@ryancolepiano3005 I did not, but I love discovering how complex and intelligent John’s songwriting is

Tis a gift to be simple. Tis a gift to be free. Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be
It's the loveliest sounding tune out there about hunting some entities down with stabby implements
I want to do that to you right now. Got any? *Snacking on a carrot* ELLIPSIS POINT
the hand drumming makes this feel so much more intimate for some reason
i love that this song FEELS super peaceful and calm but is actually about hurting people. aspirational
It's about letting thn thought of hurting people go? So that makes sense?

I think he just started collecting knives
Seems pretty straight forward to me
@@girlspooptoo8567 I doubt it, why all the spiritual references?

It was just a joke
Have a good one
these new arrangements are just incredible. i hope this vaccine rollout gets moving soon because i am dying to see the boys live
I hope you made it
These few tracks off "Getting Into Knives" are extremely underrated! They really come to life in this live setting.
Hell yeah, Peter Hughes with the upright bass.

I was there too :)
This is my favorite song from the album!
I'm feeling that way too. Wasn't at first but I listened very carefully to the lyrics and it has been a joy to hear again and again
Amazing thing about these guys, they sound even better in live/single take sessions than on the actual albums, idk how they do it but it's fantastic.
Oh man that bass sound is beautiful
Seriously, let's all take a moment to appreciate Peter Hughes
I hope someone makes a Rocksmith custom for it someday

How the piano is mixed is just beautiful.
Favourite thing: Wurster's hands at 5:21
my god that's smooth
“I’m getting into knives 👁👁”
swear to god if Showtime doesn't use this absolute fucking banger in Dexter Season 9 then what was even the point of bringing the show back at all
gotta love john's strange faces when he plays hahaha
❤
Hello yes, Mr l. Darnielle? I'd like to stop crying for more than 10 seconds thank you😂
This is excellent
Extreme pleasure. Pure and simple music joy listening to this. Wow. Truly a gift.
From a fellow traveler who crawls on all fours and still sleeps with his rifle, I hope we find that perspective we seek
What a wonderful way to start the day.

That is spectacular

actually really really good. missed my older TMG sounds like this
this is too good. a crying shame that it only has 3k views.
This is such a good arrangement, favourite version of the song I've heard so far!
Such a refreshing, nice chill tune. ~ Subbed.
Could be a theme for a movie scene or tv show that didn't suck.
John has a little bit of a Charlie Manson vibe in a few moments here, the shaggy look is the baseline, but it's all in the eyes👀
Kinda wish this was on Colbert. But alas, many folks may not have appreciated it as much as MG fans.
Their music to me is like that episode of American Dad when he discovered My Morning Jacket but not Stan obsessive.
