That plane is one of the earliest F-16s made. Very early block 1, 5, or 10, with only one MFD. And it will fly many times before it is actually shot down, if it ever IS shot down. As I gather, the plan is for it to sustain many near misses but nobody is in any hurry to waste the plane when it can still provide many more useful training missions.
Growing up I always wanted to be a F-16 fighter pilot. Its sad to see the falcon replacing the F-4 phantoms as targets. My grandfather worked for a company that turned the F-4's into targets. Just seems they could make a cheaper alternative to shoot at.
This is undoubtedly a very impressive piece of tech. But every time I see this thing flying I can't help but think it is a waste of a good seat it is.... What I wouldn't give to be sat in it when they aren't shooting at it ;)
If it could fly in training, why can't it be made into an autonomous air superiority fighter? It could do better than a human, it could take more G's than a human and it could use sensors to turn instantly to the target without wasting time finding it....
Dearest apologies. You can actually watch testing of this in various locations across the US...However if you try to document it, you might end up with radiation poisoning.
I'm thinking that it would be easy to jam the signal controlling the aircraft remotely thus rendering it a "dead duck" in real life. Artificial intelligence would be needed to keep it fighting after loosing the signal. It'll be done sooner or later.
+ruirodtube I take it you don't have an advanced degree in RF Communications technology. LPI datalinks are a very interesting subject. (Low Probability of Intercept) It's hard to jam a signal that you can't even detect.
If the AF is now using early F-16s as drones, I insist that a civilian like me should be allowed to fly one as well. It's only fair. But I don't want to fly one if it's going to be on a drone mission.
Two F-16s are already registered commercially. Other than that, you need millions to buy these, and hundreds of thousands to operate them. So good luck finding a better use of your money /s
it is primarily used to evaluate efficiency of sam systems. ground anti air crew could use it for training as well but they usually train in simulated scenarios i.e. they dont fire their missiles they just practice radar lock-on and simulated launch because even cheapest anti air missiles still cost quite a bit. on the other hand, this technology can be easily modified to be used on drones/planes with attack air to air or air to ground capabilities for combat missions.
Nope they shoot real missiles at it there inert warheads or there removed look at sinkex 2013 that's even better. Best training you can get simulators and the small drones they were using can only go so far they don't fight back or try to escape at 9g
there testing missile technology and missile tracking not the technology of the aircraft. I don't like that the Company says customer, that term sounds like the technology is sold to the highest bidder, and not our military or allies.
So if we can control a fighter jet without a pilot, why don't we just do that with all the planes and have our fighter pilots sitting safe playing a real life war game in war situations!
I can't wait until we see how the unmanned F-16 fights against a manned F-16. The unmanned should have the tactical advantage because it doesn't have the operational constraints imposed on it by lugging a fragile human around with it.
I circuiti automatici sono da considersrsi ancora incompleti. La loro attivazione delle volte sembra imprevedibile ma la verita e' un sovraccarico informazionale che interferisce con l otomatismo innescandolo .
i really love boeing btw but i really wish something someone stop this kinda of thing.... maybe in hand of u.s it feels safe but imagine crazy arab leader with remote control f-16!!! arab leaders who give money and weapons to ISIL
"Oh hey look! ISIS is taking over the middle east. What should we do?" "Idk. This guy said no more weapons so lets leave them to take over the country since no one else has weapons that are allowed to use.
why not equip it with actual weapons and make it more capable that a human pilot(instead of restricting its capabilities to being just a target) and then use it at war?
Yes Julius but when you have people like Iran, or the Muslin brotherhood you better be prepare and defend yourself remember you are a sinner ,. We need that technology
The human race sure knows how to build a lot of machines to kill each other off there has to be another way my two Labradors don't build machines to kill other Labradors off
No matter how much you try to make training as real as possible, It only becomes realistic once the opponent can shoot back... I don't see any value in training against target drones vs fighting another more experienced pilot in your squadron. This however could be interesting for spin-off technologies towards UCAS systems...
Why is Boeing developing the QF-16. Isn't it a modification of a Lockheed-Martin product. It seems like having Boeing as the primary contractor would waste alot of time and money developing redundant systems and reverse engineering because Lockheed-Martin won't make all of their data available. Pentagon politics I guess.
Not with the Middle East and with the fact that there is so much hate around the world towards each other that won't happen no matter how much money is spent.

Now that's a hell of a R/C Plane!
yeah, full scale jet rc!!
+Jonathan Andrew 557 selling for 2 million at your nearest army base!
QF 16, well thats one Qantas flight i'm never getting on
nothing to do with war, coming from pure engineering and science this is a major milestone
When are we going to see a QF-22?

Thank god the Japanese did not have these in world war 2.
lameadamalaga
I can't believe they didn't make drones like this already
Dont blow it up :( Thats my dream jet.
"The Customer"? - does that mean I can buy one?
this kind of technology is very sophisticated and is ahead of time and is intended for the use of war and scouting.
War is big business, your "customers" will enjoy this new product.
This is undoubtedly a very impressive piece of tech. But every time I see this thing flying I can't help but think it is a waste of a good seat it is.... What I wouldn't give to be sat in it when they aren't shooting at it ;)
Imagine a flight sim using real rc planes...
That would be cool
lol "Why is there thousands of kamikaze planes!" -Department of defense
If it could fly in training, why can't it be made into an autonomous air superiority fighter? It could do better than a human, it could take more G's than a human and it could use sensors to turn instantly to the target without wasting time finding it....
+Plato Weve been doing that for years... Shhhhh

Its brilliant to see a maned aircraft be controlled by an unmaned system.
If the AF is now using early F-16s as drones, I insist that a civilian like me should be allowed to fly one as well. It's only fair. But I don't want to fly one if it's going to be on a drone mission.

Whose the "customer"? Cyberdyne Systems?
I Love this technology.
***** Is there any way to watch the full Go-Pro footage from inside the QF-16? This B-roll footage isn't doing it for me!
Everytime one of those flys over my City they get Greeted by Little orbs of light that do circles around these jets.
Great job Boeing. Too bad it has to be my favorite aircraft as a target.
Lockheed must be very angry.
Or are these the older ones by general dynamics.
If u can mass produce this thing fill it with explosives and use them as super long range missiles.....but I know you already have them.
does anybody know who could be the customers of this kind of plane? Just curious
+Chase Jeremiah Yeah ikr, i plan to be a fighter jet pilot too
elconjuntodelocrz
So a REALLY expensive target? Am I missing somthing?
I mean I know they're gathering data, but why?
***** I'm confused... Is this aircraft only used to train anti-aircraft weaponry, or was it just the way one of the men in the video formulated it?
it is primarily used to evaluate efficiency of sam systems. ground anti air crew could use it for training as well but they usually train in simulated scenarios i.e. they dont fire their missiles they just practice radar lock-on and simulated launch because even cheapest anti air missiles still cost quite a bit. on the other hand, this technology can be easily modified to be used on drones/planes with attack air to air or air to ground capabilities for combat missions.

this toy I want for Christmas
there testing missile technology and missile tracking not the technology of the aircraft. I don't like that the Company says customer, that term sounds like the technology is sold to the highest bidder, and not our military or allies.
Could you stop calling the military 'customer'...
So it's basically bait?
Will it ever be armed?
Yes it can fire missiles to intercept enemy missiles, but I don't know if it will be allowed to perform in a combat scenario or just training only.
I don't know why not, that would be totally badass.
Unmanned? Cool
So if we can control a fighter jet without a pilot, why don't we just do that with all the planes and have our fighter pilots sitting safe playing a real life war game in war situations!
Because theres somethings a human can do that a robot can't
What a joke, "preforms just as good as it preformed manned unmanned." I'll never get a shot if this tech takes over fighter jets.
IS this the jet in GTA5 it looks alot like it
The jet in gta v is an F16 with two rudders
Yea I think it is too, but its probably the regular F-16 instead.
The jet in GTA V is a fictional jet based largely on the F-16.
That's what I kinda ment.
si
Don't know why, but when he said "provide our customers with..." It just rubbed me the wrong way.
I can't wait until we see how the unmanned F-16 fights against a manned F-16. The unmanned should have the tactical advantage because it doesn't have the operational constraints imposed on it by lugging a fragile human around with it.
Didn't realise Bill Murray was working for Boing

Man that seems like a lot of money down the drain :(
what world are you leaving in? my world you need all this good stuff.lol Godspeed
Compared to.... shooting down an airplane? "It allows the plane to be used over and over again."
Cool!
sweet
Skynet!
why not equip it with actual weapons and make it more capable that a human pilot(instead of restricting its capabilities to being just a target) and then use it at war?
the decision to kill will always be done by humans...that way their will be somebody to blame
need better missiles! planes are best as they going to get this time of age

Yes Julius
but when you have people like Iran, or the Muslin brotherhood you better be prepare and defend yourself

If we can just figure out how to get the taxpayers to spend trillions of dollars on peace, we might have a chance.
when they make to much money and from RUclips ->

If we spent as much money on promoting peace as we do on fighting wars, the whole world would be like a heaven on earth

AWFUL ! No F-16 should be a a DRONE !
Agreed. F-16's deserve more respect.
+Stuart Scott calm down! its just an airplane!
+PCMinecraftGaming you are a gamer so u won't understand
I do! I love planes! But people should not get mad about this. People have more hobbies than just gaming.
First! also great test
