    As you may have seen previously on my channel, I've used "MIDI hacking" - real time MIDI manipulation - to extend the functionality of quite a few musical instruments. Playing melodies with samples on the Novation Circuit, turning the Korg Electribe 2 into a 3 oscillator synth, adding CC to CV functionality to the Arturia BeatStep Pro - all of those things cannot be done out of the box with those devices.
    I've demonstrated these solutions but never really explained how you can create them yourself because the scripting language I used (Lemur) is quite complex and out of the reach of many people, and requires a phone to work, which is an inconvenience.
    Then I came across the Bome Box and MIDI Translator Pro, which are much easier to program, so I thought I'd not just put together another "MIDI hack" but also explain what's going on behind the scenes.
    This time I decided to see if I could extend the capabilities of Elektron's Analog Four. The A4 is an amazing synth with four analog voices which can either play different sounds each, play one sound with up to 4 voices polyphonically, or any combination in between.
    However, with this "MIDI hack" it can do more.
    Each of the A4's voices has 2 oscillators. Out of the box, you can't configure these voices to be played separately with the internal keys or an external keyboard. You can manually step sequence each of the oscillators using parameter locking, but that precludes real time play and is hard to do using a tuning knob.
    That's where this short 3 line script saves the day. With it, you can play each of the 4 voices of the A4 paraphonically with a simple keyboard split on an external MIDI keyboard.
    Playing paraphonically has a different character than playing two separate notes. Both notes share the same envelope, filter and fx, which is a limitation, but actually gives the music created a unique feel, similar to what can be done on the Moog Sub 37.
    With this short script you can potentially turn your A4 to a "paraphonic A8", by applying this script to all 4 voices.
    This should work on the Analog Keys as well, but you would need an external keyboard for that.
    Enjoy!

    Got the "Bome Midi Translator Pro" SOFTWARE, and it is SUPER AWESOME!!! With this software, and how i have set it up, i can control about 2.000 parameters with only my "Akai Advance 25" keyboard (with only has 8 knobs, 8 buttons - used as the main shift buttons - and the 32MPC pads as secondary shift buttons) 👍

    Great vid. Awesome channel! Thanx for sharin the love. As mentioned, this can be done in a lot of DAWs. I recommend the midi translator in Cubase. Sending CC to pitch using a midi controller in realtime (and automate) Drum machines and Samplers opened up a whole new world for me.

    Cool hack! I might have to try this with my A4 Mk1. Just FYI - a few other devices *could* do this: 1) MidiPal/Gal/Bro, 2) Midi Solutions Event Processor, 3) Polymer App, 4) Ableton Max4Live, 5) Retrokits RK-002 Cable - and 6) an Arduino with a MIDI Host (programming required). When I say *could* do it, I haven't tried your specific idea - but these are all capable of being programmed to filter MIDI based on a ruleset. I personally own a MidiBro - so I might just have to test it out on this!

    I'm really hoping you can do a workflow video for the analog four MKII. How does someone setup kits, how do they relate to patterns, songs, chains, and projects. I'm doing well with sound design, but I need to understand how to prepare a workflow for concerts.

    Nice vid. Too many musicians are tech-unsavy and have no idea what can be done when you're able to manipulate MIDI data directly. Other ways to achieve similar results: use Max (rather obvious but quite complex as well, and probably overkill for most). If your masterkeyboard is hooked up to a Mac: use the (MIDI) Environment in Logic -- the environment allows you to do incredibly complex midi manipulations fairly easily (although I do appreciate the fact that different folks give different meaning to "fairly easily" -- which esp. is true when talking about Logic's environment :-).

    For the MIDI to CC translator, it makes sense that you translate the midi notes to CC to change the oscillator, but why do you have to specify that notes above a certain value are to be passed on? In other words, why wouldn't the. first two lines just be redunatnt?

      I think a better question would be "where do I learn how to do this?"
      I'd say if you don't know how to code it's going to be a steep, steep learning curve. A good place (I'm guessing) to learn the basics of what you want to accomplish would be in Loopop's Patreon exclusive monthly download. It may not answer your specific questions but that's where I'd start.
      Edit: Actually, the next question down he answers a similar question: Midi Translator Pro software.

    i am searching the bome forums but seeming to come up empty handed. i think the answer is yes but i would like assurance.
    is it possible to with the bome to take incoming midi data and quantize it to set note values?
    ex. im generating aleatoric cv voltages in eurorack, those voltages are being translated to midi data via say a disting mk4 and then i want that midi data to enter the bome box, conform to specific notes i establish and then output said data to a tabletop synth.
    possible?

    Hi! Do I get it right? Is the software working independently from BomeBox? So BomeBox is necessary if you want to play DAWless?
    I guess it's impossible to make Behringer's Model D paraphonic through MIDI only, right?

    Sick! Does this work on the Analog Keys aswell just with the internal keybed? Cant wait to try when I get home

    • @loopop
      @loopop  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! It will probably work using an external keyboard. Regarding the internal one, since I don't have an Analog Keys I can't say for sure - but here's an idea: in MULTIMAP, split the keyboard so that the left side sends notes to the track as usual, but the right side sends out MIDI. Then, loop that MIDI back into the AK (AK MIDI OUT -> Computer/BomeBox -> AK MIDI IN) and use the third line of my script to convert that MIDI to CC. You don't need the BomeBox or to buy the software to try this out, you could use a computer running MIDI Translator Pro but you'd need a USB MIDI interface. Let me know if you have a chance to try it out!

    • @northerntao
      @northerntao 6 лет назад +2

      It does - I don't have a BomeBox (yet), but I have an Analog Keys and the MIDI Translator Pro software, and I have done similar things. The OS for the AK and A4 are essentially the same.
