Making great art is like getting struck by lightning? Conversation between Ian Roberts & Angela Fehr

  • We all hope to make great art, but how can you know if what you are making has the potential to be great? Can you reconcile yourself to the idea that you might consider yourself lucky to make only one or two truly great paintings in your lifetime? If you truly can't identify your own greatest work, how can you commit to painting and find joy in the practice of art?
Ian Roberts ‪@IanRobertsMasteringComposition‬ and I talked about some of these ideas in a recent conversation and I wanted to share a piece of that conversation with you. The entirety of the interview is available to members of the Heart-Led Artist Journey, an identity and skill development series for artists available at www.heartledar...

I find myself sometimes avoiding people who seem to know what they are talking about. My voice says I can’t keep up with them, Ian, you. I listen to my regrets, and they usually don’t encourage me. Just getting immersed, being so, is what I see. Once you are doing something, being immersed in it, most of us can succeed, maybe not at your level, or Ian’s, but it is success regardless.

Agreed-their path is not your path or my path but it is sometimes interesting to walk down their path for a few minutes. I guess. 😂

I think it's so interesting that in these interactions with artists who I would think have amassed so much knowledge (and I easily feel intimidated by my own awareness of my shortcomings), what it turns out is that they are operating with the same kind of openness to change and curiosity that has benefited my art so well. Expertise is helpful, but it's curiosity that creates the most possibility.

Not very appropiate, nor professional to fold your clothes while getting a video out.
