  • My mind is pretty blown this year by how many good red fleshed apples I have grown from seed. This project to grow new apple varieties from seed has turned out great and it should only get better from here as I move into the next generations of offspring. I'm glad I went with my intuition 12 years ago when I felt like I had to do this project.

    I miss my apple experiments. I grafted 50 or so varieties onto wild rootstock that came up on my property but had to sell a year ago. I had some amazing wild apples good for breeding. Keep it ip your doing amazing work. Was hoping to send you a super early disease resistant variety crunchy and good for breeding. Oh well i had to drop my obsession for now. Hoping to have a small orchard of your best someday.

    Had a chance to buy red fleshed apples here on east coast for first time. I drove a 130plus mile round trip to buy Lucy Glo apples. What a great apple and i have no doubt many of yours are way better. They have another called Lucy Rose that suppose to be much stronger berry flavored. I hope they get shipped here too.I cant hardly wait for my trees and grafts to produce. Cant wait to see what scion and seeds you have for sale this year.

      I'm glad that worked out for you. the lucy glo I got were not good. I hear it can be very good though. Consistency is probably going to be a big issue for RF apples in markets. They are finicky on flesh color (and therefore flavor) development.

    Hi Steven, This spring I am going to send you some redfleshed apple scions for you to experiment with. One variety that I have been breeding with is Roberts Crab. It's a super redfleshed, golfball size, tannic, high sugar, woody texture apple. Another one you should trial is Otterson. It was breed at Michagan State, and is a medium large, very redfleshed, pretty good dessert apple, with OK texture. Also, I have Thornberry - a Etter varity, which is pink fleshed, and Redlove Sirena. I also have some small primitive varieties such as Timiskaning, Irene, Cranberry. I have made some crosses with your Sugarwood x Thornberry to make a 3 way Etter variety. I aquired all these except Redlove and Thornberry from USDA.

Do you ever sell any of your crosses, or are you just trying to create some that can then be sold to a major nursery to start begin distributed with royalties going to you, or, or, or??? Would love to know. My husband and I are creating a small homestead ourselves and looking to plant a LOT of fruit and nut trees out there. We're both interested in some of these varieties you've created, as well as learning about what you do and how you do it, so we're looking forward to following your channel! yeah, something like that. I often tell people I'm an experimental horitculturist. I'm not sure about marketing apples. I may try to figure out how to get some long term income from a few of the best ones, but it all that is very complicated. Most of them I just release into the public domain. I already have a bunch out. Cherry Crush, BITE ME!, Cherub, Vanilla Pink, Pink Lemonade, Black Strawberry... More coming this year. I sell scions every year, so if you can graft, or learn, you can grow them :). I have a long grafting series on here.

    • @SkillCult

    • @suz4keeps
      @suz4keeps Год назад

      @@SkillCult Thanks, I meant the trees you will remove, their growing roots as living plants. Could your culls go to a bonsai group nearby? If you lopped your culls, would they back-bud on a short trunk? Could you leave them growing for a season after a hard cut back before ripping them out? The fruit wouldn't matter if the tree would survive as a bonsai.

      @@suz4keeps Yes, they will sprout back. Since they are dwarfs, It is easier to move the stubs. I may keep some of the ones I tear out and regraft to take with me. I can use them to grow more copies of the best seedlings or for other varieties, scion production etc.

    Yes, miniature juice apple plantation! I am doing it now, but I want ur stuff as well. :-)

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад +1

      I think there could be a market for mini juice apples that you dont' have to cut. Just toss them in a juicer whole. I mean for like juice bars and home juicing fresh. But also potential for bigger juice operations it would seem. I should have that columnar one with no name out this year, but only a few scions unfortunately. I hope to have more this year, but those little things don't put on a lot of growth, so it is necessarily a slower process to propagate them. Of course I could sell smaller scions as the buds are packed so close.

  • @DustySplinters
    @DustySplinters Год назад +1

    How many years before we see any of these commercially grown and sold in the stores?

    Keep up the good work.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад

      Testing varieties enough to get them into commercial production is a whole big deal. I'm not sure that will happen with any of my varieties. They also just may not be suitable as far as storage ability goes. The modern apple paradigm relies heavily not long keeping and storage under highly controlled conditions. That 11/7 probably would not hold up well at all. that group tends to go soft pretty fast after they peak.

    • @DustySplinters
      @DustySplinters Год назад

      @@SkillCult Right, commercial varieties need to store long.
      So I guess it would be a great variety for a backyard orchard.

      @SkillCult  Год назад +1

      No, I don't. That is a pretty big subject. It is really the opposite. If you graft, you get exactly the same apple. If you grow from seed, it is a gamble and it will almost always turn out significantly different, but that is how I make these new varieties. I do have content on grafting, lots of that. there is an 11 part playlist. but basic planting and growing not so much. I do have some great content on training though.

    Nice apples.
    I just moved from Washington back to Ohio, and brought my 3-year-old potted Cosmic Crisp with me. I have a couple of Porter's Perfection trees that I want to cross with it. I am hoping to make a disease resistant cider apple with the large cells, disease resistance, late flowering, and keeping quality of the Cosmic Crisp. I am hoping that the large cells will give a good ratio of juice to pulp. I am hoping that the keeping quality of Cosmic Crisp will allow me to use the apples right away, or store them for less acid and more aromatics. I am also hoping my Cosmic Crisp does not die on me because I am no longer a resident of Washington and can't replace it. I have Melrose scion already, and will probably add Gold Rush to the list.
    I was thinking it might be a good apple for traditional colonial era apple butter if juice can be reasonably extracted. The recipe I have seen calls for sweet/low acid apples. You juice a bushel and peel & core a bushel. If you still have it, I might be interested in buying some scion from you-unless you think it is unsuitable for this purpose. A bit of starch in the apple may help to thicken the apple butter.
    P.S. A lawyer assured me that it was legal to bring my Cosmic Crisp with me since I signed no contract and purchased it legally 3 years ago. I simply can not propagate it.
    P.P.S. The Rubaiyat x King David 2014 #5 looks awesome. I hope it gets better with age.

    Question, I have had good luck and bad luck by replanting store bought seed fruit and veg.
    Are the seeds from the grocery store different from organic seeds that you could use?

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  5 месяцев назад

      some things, like apples, already do not grow true from seeds, so you will get something different, sometimes good sometimes not. vegetables are often hybrids, which basically means they are not stabilized. some hybrids will throw very similar or usually good offspring, others, like squash, can throw very different and not so good offspring. It depends on what you are planting, but it is often a big gamble to grow from seed that is of unknown parentage.

    Do you find the numerous Grenadine X Goldrush crosses have a long ripening window? You tasted quite a few of these in you video like a month ago. Or do they just hang well? Have they inherited GoldRush's excellent keeping trait? Whats the coldest temp youve had there to date? Glad to see youre having a lot of good results. Wish I could taste black Strawberry (will havd to wait prob 2 years there). Thanks for the triceratops update as well.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад +1

      Not really. if I tasted any back then that were good, most would have gotten less good. I have a bunch of them, so they ripen at different times. There are a couple that might, one is 11/6, which has been intriguing the last couple of years. It is only a little pink. and 11/5, which is not pink at all. I'd say if anything, they might be the opposite. Gold Rush's keeping is after picking under ripe, so I will have to try that to find out. I will not be surprised if one or two do, but I would guess that most won't.
      I don't measure temps much. I've measured 18f I think at ground level in a cold spot, but it is usually well above 20 degrees. That was a long time ago, so I don't think I had any late hanging apples yet. Not sure. A guy that is another 1000 feet or more in elevation told me that everything freezes out (fruit damage) there except Hauer pippin.

      @mdl17576 Год назад

      I went back and looked at the "keep it or kill it" video and there were definitely a lot of Grenadine x goldrush crosses in both videos. The ones in this video will be too late for my climate but wow do I want to play with those genetics. I'll definitely be watching your seed sale for crosses of vanilla pink and and earlier varieties like WP, Cherry Crush, Chestnut, etc. Pollen too. I'd like to cross your later varieties with Bill's Red Flesh aka Scarlett Surprise. It ripens in August here, has respectable levels of red flesh and tastes pretty good.
      One other note, picked Sugarwood on Nov 2nd since we were forecast to get 20s Temps and snow. The last one sat on my table until like Dec 7th or so and was still firm! It was definitely still firm, and did exhibit some red staining near the skin. Surprisingly only got 17 brix. Probably explained by letting it set more fruit than I should have and it was a damp summer. Was initially hoping to make a pint of single varietal cider. Alas it wasn't to be. The flavor was definitely sweet and rich with a little tannin in there. I'm sure it'll be great when I don't try to push it too hard. Got some controlled crosses with Sugarwood with Hewes Crab, WP, Enterprise and an unknown red fleshed crab I found in my neighborhood.
      Whew, sorry for the text wall and as always, thanks for the great video and inspiration!

    (1) are most of the shrubby trees you’re picking from just grown from seed crosses, ie not grafted onto root stock? (2) What about the trees in the moving nursery bed starting at 24:41? (3) how long can you keep trees that closely planted if you value variety over productivity?

    • @SkillCult

      1) they are all on dwarfing stock, bud 9 / M9 size. 2) The nursery trees are all on bud 10 this time. i"m trying it out. Seems nice, but we'll see. bigger than bud 9, amazing roots! 3) That is too close. they are only 12 inches apart. you can get away with cordon training 18 inches apart and 6 feet between rows, but I would recommend using 2 feet apart. but they have to be maintained with regular pruning to do really well. Preferably at least one summer purning and then a winter pruning. You can look for info on diagonal cordon. It is a good way to fit a lot of variety in a small strip of ground.

    What’s your opinion on Antonovka Apples? I’ve read that the seeds grow almost true to the tree? Looking for a good cold hardy base apple to start experimenting with. 🍏 😊

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад

      I actually dont' have it and have not tried one. I think I would also try putting red fleshed apples of other kinds onto hardy trees and see if the offspring survive. Others are doing that already, you cold climate people need to network. I sometimes have trailman seed crosses for sale. Not sure I made many red flesh crosses onto it this year, but I should have some trailman seed. Depending how cold you are. If you are in minnesota or something, you have more options than way up in Canada or Alaska.

      I'd look into the best cold hardy varities, like sweet 16 and chestnut, or get seeds or pollen from me to make those crosses with quality RF apples to carry the RF genes into cold hardy offspring. I think that will work. I'd be looking at planting large numbers of seedlings and just leaving them in the field where they are for a couple of years. I'd just plant them really close together in wide beds and stuff that survives several winters graft out to go to fruit. If you don't know the story of the wealthy apple, look it up. very interesting. @@AmbersDaintyThrowBlanket

      I already sell some, like Vanilla Pink. I'll be adding more this year. Hella Kitty, the fruity columnar tree and Clarion for sure out of this video and maybe others. Scion sales are usually in February. best ways to find out when they are available and best access in order are Patreon www.patreon.com/skillcult, subbing to my blog www.skillcult.com/blog and instagram. The rarest, anything new basically, are auctioned on figbid due to limited supply. Anything I have a lot of goes in my webstore.

I would love a red flesh apple....is there any chance you could send me some seeds from one of your reds?? I would be aiming to breed a red flesh cider apple rather than an eating apple....the uk doesnt have much choice for red flesh apples unfortunately

      Currently some are available but, only as scion wood for grafting. I'll be talking with some nurseries about offering them as trees ready to plant. for now, I do auctions once a year, which have just ended and I sell some in my webstore www.skillcult.com/store, but again, only as scion wood. As time goes on, they should be more available and cheaper and as trees.

    • @SkillCult
      @SkillCult  Год назад +1

      I sell seeds every year, some open pollinated by bees and some of the hand pollinated crosses that I use for breeding. They won't grow the same apple as the seed, but that is how we get all these new apples. If you want these specific apples, you have to graft them, but I already sell scions for some in the winter and will be adding some of these this year, like Hella Kitty and Clarion. Seeds will be available pretty soon. Most are harvested and drying. Just need to collect a few more, then count and list them all.

    Congratulations on so many successful apple varieties! Black Strawberry looks amazing! I'd like to fit more apples into our landscape here, and am dreaming of training a row of stepovers. How necessary do you think it would be to start with a dwarf rootstock for such a project? Is it silly to think I could start them from seed and just keep them pruned? I'm following your blog for updates on when seeds and scions are up for sale, hope you're doing well :)
