My mother *always* makes her own mooncakes. I don't think we have bought any before. She is very thrifty and frugal, so buying mooncakes is completely out of the question. She doesn't even buy Chinese restaurant food because she can make everything at home at a fraction of the cost. Why? No service fee. No labor fee. No sales tax. No tips. Just pure food.
Here in America, it is hard to find mooncakes. We can order them online but those are full of preservatives. So I would like to make my own and try different flavor combinations. I would spend a lot on high quality ingredients because my goal is not to save money, but rather to make a delicious treat.
My hack on saving on festive mooncake: don't buy them. There are plenty of (chinese) desserts out there in my country other than mooncake (and they're more delicious).

I've stopped baking since last year, the cost of raw materials has put me off.
that's pitiful,isn't?
It’s RM24 to RM28 for one piece of mooncake over here in Malaysia. Mooncakes has gotten so expensive to the extent I wouldn’t even think to buy one.
In Canada, four mooncakes with double yolk is only 8-10 bucks

Cost of ingredients, cost of labor, cost of supply chain... I wonder if it's more than the greed inflation
