Trucker Tip: If you find you're depleting your brake air psi in traffic etc, drop it down into a lower gear, and crawl consistently just a bit slower than the traffic is moving, rather than accelerating, braking, accelerating, braking, accelerating, braking etc. This will prevent you from having to brake as often, give you higher engine RPMs to replenish your air reserves quicker, keep your engine cooler, and give you better fuel efficiency. You'll know you're doing it right, if there's always a few car spaces in front of you. Also, be careful when going down long hills/mountain grades. These larger trucks require a lot more braking friction than regular cars to slow down/stop (especially with 10,000lbs on the tires). Not only do you not want to run low on air in those situations, you don't want to overheat your brakes either (because then, you can't stop at all). If the engine can't maintain the bulk of your downhill speed, throw your 4-way flashers on, slow her down, and drop it another gear. Check your mirrors every 15 seconds, and watch for any signs of smoke coming from the rear tires. If you see/smell smoke, pull over at a safe spot for 20-30 minutes, and let em cool off - it's as simple as that. Safe travels!

My tip, brake sooner turn wider, check your mirrors constantly, stay in the right or middle lane unless you have to and when in doubt just let them pass you if you're trying to merge. Also if you see something like a tree hanging low don't go near it. When backing it up make sure you give yourself space and then start backing and make sure the sides of your target is parallel with your mirrors and then go straight back from there. Hello my name is Mark i have never driven a box truck but i am on a job hunt for one to drive now can you educate me please on moving to reverseing .allso air and up hill with load and down hill with load please thank you
Mark, when you are going up-hill, the truck will usually select the correct gear automatically. But, as the video says... if the truck keeps shifting back and forth between 5th and 6th gear, you can disable the 6th gear while going up hill. The switch sometimes says "6th gear disable" and sometimes is says something about "overdrive", because 6th gear is an overdrive gear for highway driving. One thing I noticed is that the truck will slow down significantly before it downshifts to 5th gear. To avoid losing speed, I found it useful to disable 6th gear just before starting to climb hills. Of course, I was driving a fully loaded truck and towing a 6000 pound trailer (car carrier). So YMMV. When you are going down a long steep hill, it's the same as driving a car. Select the appropriate gear on the gear shift lever to help slow the truck and avoid overheating the brakes (or losing too much air pressure). Regarding reversing: Try to avoid getting into a spot where you need to back-up. Pull thru parking spaces when possible. When you need to back-up, always get out of the truck and look behind the truck for any obstacles... because there is a big blind spot behind the truck. One thing to note: You cannot back up when you are towing a car dolly. This is why I prefer a car carrier. A car dolly (tow dolly) is one of those trailers that allow you to drive your car onto it with only the two front wheels of the car on the dolly. A car carrier is the type of trailer that you can drive the whole car (all 4 wheels) onto the trailer.
any way to get these things to go more than 20mph up a hill on the highway? Pulling a trailer with a small SUV but the truck itself is half full and it doesn’t want to go very fast at all up hills even with the 6th gear disabled or shifted down to 4th
Get a Peterbilt? Like seriously not even the shtty steep slush/mud covered hill on this unrestricted road I gotta drive during weight restrictions drops me below 60kmph carrying 15k in a straight truck.
You should fit under most. I would look for a height call out just to be sure as most station have them marked. Also if fueling up at truck stop the semi truck bays will fit you

I just rented a 26 foot Penske truck for our move from Wisconsin to Arizona. On the road the truck would randomly slow down from 60 to 65 down to the low fifties. Foot to the floor, nothing I could do about it. I was routinely passed by UHaul 26 foot trucks, one that was towing a car. At times the gentlest incline would reduce my speed to the mid forties. Terrible experience. Added an entire day to our move. To their credit they issued me a sizable refund but the new Penske trucks are underpowered and not up to the task.
Yes they dont have aloit of power perhaps you were hitting a headwind. Any truck will slow down alot when the wind shifts. Most trucks you need to run with the throttle all the way down to make it go.
Lol slow down from 60 to 65? That's a good thing. That's an increase. Did ythe truck need to regen? I've been driving an international for over 3+ years and it happens all the time
Haren, hi! I am about to drive this cross country on I-10 from Tx to CA and I am nervous about changing lanes and being on Hwy with construction. Could you please give me any suggestions for changing lanes? Especially when in Los Angeles?😬😳 Thank you!
To start out, park in a empty parking lot where you can practice driving if possible park a car or have someone stand by the rear bumper on either side and look at them with your mirrors. Doing this will show you how it looks when some one is right on your rear end. Then have them move back to an acceptable merging distance. The truck has 2 different mirrors for a reason. The large "flat" mirror is great for judging distances but has a limited field of view. Use this to determine if you are far enough ahead of the car you are merging in front of. The smaller convex mirror is your blind spot mirror. It has a larger field of view but it is hard to determine distances from it. Use both to determine if you have room to change lanes. Good Luck!
I'm pretty sure no one off the street is going to drive that one because you have to have a air brake endorsement for it but you can get 26-footer in non air brake
I got it for a flat rate, and ended up being a third of the cost as compared to uhaul. For example, I moved my stuff and all of by roommates stuff for the same price to rent even though they lived 150 miles away from me. You can really use the unlimited miles to cut cost with multiple people if you get a bigger truck.
I am renting a 22 foot truck to move from Oklahoma to Arizona, I have made the drive once before and in New Mexico and Arizona I will have to go through some very steep inclines and very steep descents, I think I remember there being 10% grade and they last a long while, anyhow, I have drove air brake equipped vehicles before but my question is is the box truck safe to drive in those conditions? I feel like I will ride the brakes and run out of air
This is when the 6th gear disable and down shifting to 4th will really help you out. If you need to use the service brakes, use them until you are around 5mph slower then the target speed and let off to allow them to cool. Apply again after you gain 5-10 above your target speed
It just disabled the 6th gear from what I could tell while driving. I do believe that if it had an exhaust brake it would have a switch to engage and to select how many cylinders to engage it on.
@@haren9084 you can't select any cylinders it's just a switch. Exhaust brake is just a Jake brake that helps your actual brakes by reducing the amount of work they carry
MPG is rather hard to gauge due to traffic conditions, age/condition of truck, weather, average speed, load and driving styles. This trip I got 9-10mpg and another it was less. The truck had a MPG meter but after hand calculating the MPG I found it was incorrect. Similar trucks I have driven for work I was lucky to get 8 so I do not have a baseline to give out.
I think I forgot to apply the yellow parking brake on my truck and I’m stressing out!! I just put it on park at a warehouse about an hour and a half away.
I know legally you don't need a CDL to drive a truck like this but I think penske should require them because I rent these things out to people who just have no idea what they're doing. old grandma can't just go from a prius to a big international truck in 5 minutes. you get people who don't understand how air brakes work which isn't good. they put the truck in park with a trailer attached to it on a hill and they don't know how to let the air out of the brakes so you don't break the locking pin in the transmission and send the truck rolling down the street.
i rented a truck from Penske truck rentals and bought the insurance .had a accident with it ,my guy driving the rental truck backed into my fender of my New Truck . Penske will hardly answer the phone when told about it. i left 4 messages and finally someone called me back and said what happen.after i told him he said ill call ya right back ,thats been 6 days ago. monday i am filling a court complaint and let the judge do his job . $ 3150.00 damage.
I am not 100% certain but I do not believe that you do but it may very by state. I know in Ohio where I used to work we had about 3 of these non-cdl trucks with air brakes and the drivers did not need a cdl but they did have to fill out a drivers log.
Please don’t use this advice for all Penske trucks. Like I said in an earlier comment, they have at least 3 different manufacturers for these trucks and they are not all the same. So your best bet is to read the owners manual first. But thank you to this guy for trying.
As far as I know they only rent the internationals out for general non-cdl trucks, at least that's what I've got for all 3 I've rented. But I could be wrong
@@haren9084 No, I can’t remember the name of the one I have now and can’t walk out to check it cause my leg is messed up. But they don’t rent them out by the manufacturer, they rent them out by fleet numbers. Trust me, we use them 24/7.

@@haren9084 How can you not state a specific value when it's stenciled on the box looking in the side mirror while driving the rental? What they don’t tell you is the fact that the DEF tank is on the passenger side. Which means you can’t fill it from the cheaper pump price at a truck stop. Which then you have to buy the expensive boxed crap and fight to try and get in in the tank even with the hose they supply. Price difference..... 2.99 per gal. Vs $20 for a 2.5 gal. Pack. Better get yourself a jug with a pump in it, or plan on a lot of cussing.
Odds are you probably will not have to put any in as it does not burn as fast as the fuel. When I had to purchase DEF for work I got the Walmart brand for abound $8 a jug. They also had the name brand stuff for around $12.
What do you mean? Pull in the other way or use the hose from the other side? On the trucks we haven't deleted the def from is on the passenger side and I've never had an issue using the def pumps at any truck stop.

If your air gets so low the breaks set you have an air leak or a faulty air compressor.
I'm renting a 26' next week. Do these trucks fit under the awnings at gas stations?
You should fit under most. I would look for a height call out just to be sure as most station have them marked. Also if fueling up at truck stop the semi truck bays will fit you
Any tips for a 26' penske that are different than what you covered in the video? I'm driving a 26' w/ a car carrier attached... pretty nervous but i've never had a problem in the past with 15 ft/20 ft...
Can't say that I do as I have never driven with a car carrier. Just be sure to watch your mirrors
I've been driving an international for over 3+ years and it happens all the time
They said it slowed down to 60 - 65 to low 50s
Can you disable the 6th gear button while driving? Stupid question, I know
The model I had had a 6th gear disable button to lock out the gear.
Good Luck!
Does anyone know the size of the steering wheel so we can buy a club?
I'm pretty sure no one off the street is going to drive that one because you have to have a air brake endorsement for it but you can get 26-footer in non air brake
The air brake requirement is different from state to state. Ohio does not require the endorsement on non-CDL vehicles.
You dont need a CDL license correct?
Correct, just a regular license
Do these trucks have trackers in them
I drive one of those 26 ft box trucks for work, and could drive that Penske truck no problem,
How much does it cost to rent this?
Do they charge you by the mile like uhaul?
I got it for a flat rate, and ended up being a third of the cost as compared to uhaul. For example, I moved my stuff and all of by roommates stuff for the same price to rent even though they lived 150 miles away from me. You can really use the unlimited miles to cut cost with multiple people if you get a bigger truck.
@Mudboy Hheavy Tv when I moved it was included with the move
They don't have an engine brake?
What's a good speed to drive a 26ft Penske on I95?
@@savagem74 40mph - 55mph depending on traffic and weight. If it feels too fast, it is.
Got a job tomorrow they think I know how to drive a box truck we’ll see how this goes 😂😂
Thank you very helpful
So the “Disable 6th Gear” switch is an exhaust brake switch or does it just disable 6th gear?
It just disabled the 6th gear from what I could tell while driving. I do believe that if it had an exhaust brake it would have a switch to engage and to select how many cylinders to engage it on.
Haren Right, thanks lol
@@haren9084 you can't select any cylinders it's just a switch. Exhaust brake is just a Jake brake that helps your actual brakes by reducing the amount of work they carry
I love your video🤟🏽
Great vid man helped alot
Glad I could help!
Nothing on the City/Turnpike mileage?
MPG is rather hard to gauge due to traffic conditions, age/condition of truck, weather, average speed, load and driving styles. This trip I got 9-10mpg and another it was less. The truck had a MPG meter but after hand calculating the MPG I found it was incorrect. Similar trucks I have driven for work I was lucky to get 8 so I do not have a baseline to give out.
I think I forgot to apply the yellow parking brake on my truck and I’m stressing out!! I just put it on park at a warehouse about an hour and a half away.
No need to stress, it will still hold the vehicle. It is better to use both to relieve some of the stress it puts on the transmission.
@Haren can do more videos like this?
I do not plan on moving soon, however I may plan on making more on the buses and trucks I drive for work.
I agree. These trucks are very dangerous and drive different than a car. It's a safety issue.
i rented a truck from Penske truck rentals and bought the insurance .had a accident with it ,my guy driving the rental truck backed into my fender of my New Truck . Penske will hardly answer the phone when told about it. i left 4 messages and finally someone called me back and said what happen.after i told him he said ill call ya right back ,thats been 6 days ago. monday i am filling a court complaint and let the judge do his job
. $ 3150.00 damage.
How do you build air pressure can anyone help?
Hey man great vid. Do they have insurance options?
They do, I'm not sure of the prices off of the top of my head
Do you need a cdl to drive these for a business?
I am not 100% certain but I do not believe that you do but it may very by state. I know in Ohio where I used to work we had about 3 of these non-cdl trucks with air brakes and the drivers did not need a cdl but they did have to fill out a drivers log.
legally you don't need a CDL, but your employer might require it. if not they will favor somebody who actually does have a CDL.
How do you bypass the speed cut off
Is it a automatic or 6 speed
Step 1.) Find low bridge
Step 2.) Drive
Honestly i do stop and go traffic with 34k if your deflating under 26 you may need to drain water from air tank even going down hill it’s not until youre at 45-50k before it feels like it won’t stop lol
My truck won't let me drive and making a horn sound
You didn't show the height limit sign on the box looking in the mirror! Why?
That's one of the biggest mistakes you could miss and a driver needs to know
this while driving one of these trucks.
The few I have rented had differing heights to them. I didn't want to state a specific value
@@haren9084
How can you not state a specific value when it's stenciled on the box looking in the side mirror while driving the rental?
People should know the height of the box before driving a rental. You don't want to end up like so many have on the RUclips
channel "11'8" ruclips.net/video/USu8vT_tfdw/видео.html
Do seats adjust to ur height?
Yes there is a valve on the side that you can use to adjust the air cylinder to raise or lower the seat
These are fun to drive. especially when you got dick heads on the road, i just match speed with a 18 speed semi truck and watch as the traffic piles up in the back. oh boy they get pissed off. i just smile as i am being flipped off and taken picture of. idgaf.
Can you talk more about the breaks
Lol where was that high throttle button?
While parked, press on the cruise control buttons then the accel button
@@haren9084 thank you I couldn’t figure it out
Thats seems easy :)
Do you need a Class B to rent it?
No you do not
Class C non CDL

You need to learn more about the air brake system
Keep away from 11foot8+8. It loves the Penske Peel.
Does anyone know the fuel capacity ?
70 gallons
This one was 45 or 50 gallons
2014 is 70gal. No jake or engine brake a problem for long steep mountains. Brakes started to overheat. Had in low gear but would upshift on its own after a period.
Penske trucks well u haul and penske need some form of promotion maybe stop not knowing a empty billboard is the option rent a billboard for six months possibly and after other company references will probably follow if the location of billboard is right
LOBILLOS MUSICAL DE DURANGO.
not going to lie, the air brake thing kind of scare the shit out of me. oh boy
@@OGRUclipsEnjoyer The fuel tank was on the drivers side. The DEF tank was on the passenger side. When refueling, the hose on the drivers side pump will not stretch to reach over to the passenger side.
@@tomlewis632 Truck stops have satellite pumps... How do you think we fuel up duel tanks?
It’s an international one

This isn’t all Penske trucks. They are made by 3 different companies. So your best bet is to read the manual before you take one out.

Driving one for Pepsi today…
This video should not have been posted. There are two serious misstatements about brake pressure. It's not enough to add corrections in red type. People need to be able to believe what they are told.
Valid point, however just the fact of bringing the concept of brake psi up to new operators is huge in my opinion. The past few trucks I rented with Penske they just tossed the keys at me and let me on my way with no training what so ever.
