The barrel colonies are gorgeous and I can imagine how hard it is to make them look so natural. Nothing boring about them at all! I have to say that the square in the back with the colony and the green rock is my fave. Breathtaking.
12:13 , I find myself captivated by the charm of the barrel colonies, which exude a whimsical aura and possess a playful spirit. As a minimalist at heart, I am drawn to the international style architecture, and these colonies align perfectly with my aesthetic preferences. They exude simplicity without unnecessary embellishments, while also carrying a profound, almost spiritual significance. When viewed through a geometrical lens, the symmetrical and structured formation of the plants leaves me in awe. It's truly astonishing how nature can create such marvels!
The barrel colonies are on another level of statement. It is simple yet dazzling and is just such a flex. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s jaw drops whenever you do one. So.. a few naysayers are.. meh 😂, it always happens with art anyway 🤭. Not everyone will get it but the people that do will love you for it ❤
OMG! That last shot with the panoramic view is absolutely stunning!!!! I love the barrel cactus colony, such a contracts from the huge jade plants that they replaced. ❤❤❤❤❤
Want to know why some people say the barrel cactus gardens look simple?...because those people are simple-minded. You're work takes alot of thought, design and execution. Good job!
Omg! I had to stop watching to comment on the cactus garden cubicle where the run a muck jade used to be!!!! It's incredible! Clapping hands for Hannah!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
That view is just beautiful, the owners of the home knew what they were doing by not building a fence as a barrier. A naturalistic perspective. I absolutely love what Laura did there in the backyard with the tall cactus and the barrels and rocks. Looks amazing, my kinda style. The barrel cactus colony around the front of the home looks amazingly stunning too, very unusual and natural unstructured flow ❤
Barrels are beautiful! The spines glow when backlit by the sun at sunset, so magnificent to look at and enjoy. I have golden, silver, blue, and red spined devil's. I love them. Your barrel colony designs in all of your installations are 1000%+ ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.
I think the barrel cactus clusters are the coolest. The repetitive shapes and colors are soothing to my eyes. I like the visual contrast in the front of the barrel colony, the specimen garden with the beautiful Palo Verde, and then the island tapestry. And the raised bed in the back is interesting and leads the eye out towards the great view.
Absolutely love this garden. When I first saw how many barrel cacti were to go into the garden I thought way too many, but you always amaze us, so beautiful.
Oh thank you! What a great frame of mind for the little sedums….long term annuals. I was in San Diego forever but now I am in Northeastern Ohio and I have been so spoiled for so long with tapestries lasting forever in the land of milk and honey. I had sedums and sempervivums look beautiful all winter long but everyone around here grows annuals. I never thought of succulents as being annuals. This changes the game because I don’t have to plant everything and then struggle to keep it going forever in this crazy weather…seasonal would be ok! Thank you so much for giving me perspective. I knew I was so close to having an aneurysm when I walked into a nursery and said…why do you have a barrel cactus? The cashier said…oh…that’s a houseplant. The horror. Everything is a houseplant here. It’s so wrong.
The barrel colonies are a true work of art both in front and back!!!! I loved seeing you planting a tapestry today. It has been a minute since you have planted one. This whole installation is stunning. And those special boulders…..my heart!
Maybe some people don’t like the simplicity of the barrel colony, but I like the “mono” aspect of it even though I’m not a big fan of barrel cactus. What I would like to say is that you have taught me about the importance of changes in elevation almost like islands that add so much to the design. Even though I’m unable to grow many of these plants here in Oregon, I still feel like you have taught me some good design principles. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next. 👍
I love the barrels!!! The back yard barrels are very artistic. I think what makes it for me in the front yard and back yard are the inclusion of rocks. Barrels and rocks are the "chefs kiss" in gardening😊
Love love the mammilaria and barrel colonies, especially the one in the backyard!! Gorgeous!! 🤩🤩 This project is really coming along. Really like how the tapestry is developing. And I’d never say no to another chance at that view from the back patio 😍 One of my favorite resident projects!
I absolutely love the barrel colonies. They’re SUPER DOPE! I never paid barrels any attention until I became obsessed with Auntie Laura. Now I have 2 of them 🙌🏾
10:08 I could look up that plant, since I forget now what it looks like, but.. I think I'll just wait until tomorrow or soon to see what it looks like on video and in the pot. :) The pot complements those blue cacti and fills up that spot so well. It's so good! Great choice.
I love love your barrel colony. I can see the various design aspects you trying to convey. It's gorgeous. We can see it clearly in the video. I suppose you either a fan of the cactus and rock design or not.
I love the barrel colonies and I can see how it would be very challenging to get placed just right... if not done right it could look a hot mess! I sure hope they change their minds about ripping out that raised bed in the back, it is so beautiful! ❤
I love these intricate cactus installations that you do but I often wonder about the cost. I live in Texas and just one of these plants is expensive let alone the worker cost. Have you ever covered that topic?
I'm living for this installation! It might be one of my faves. The barrels are stunning! They are definitely translating in the video. I'm feeling the blue pot now too. If I lived in California and had an unlimited budget I'd plant an acre of the Pilosocereus Azures. It's my favorite plant that you use.
Oh my gosh Laura... I for one, think that the barrel colonies are art pieces! When I was at Oasis Water Efficient Gardens last month, they had the white spine barrels so I picked one up to place in my next phase of bed re-do's in my yard. I absolutely adore these fatties...especially when they are in bloom! If you look at some of the botanical gardens and museums in Arizona, and here in our desert California communities, they mimic what you are doing with these lovelies. But ya, they aren't for everyone I suppose... or maybe they just haven't come to the cactittie side...🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Wow! The front yard barrel colony is spectacular. There are so many that I was wondering if it is going to look like a solid mass in a few years. Love, love, love the tapestry especially the mangaves.
i LOVE the barrel colonies... barrels are nature's gift to busy gardeners... and the placement and simplicity of the design, to me, gives the eye a place to rest and just study the gorgeous symmetry of mother nature... the mastery of elevation and placement of rocks makes or breaks the look, too.. i see gardens around here that are a poor attempt at xeriscape (to me) now that i know more - and all i can see is "that's too flat, too flat, too flat"... looks like mars instead of a gorgeous natural garden (even mars has dips and valleys!).. but hey, that's just me... i am loving these gardens front and back! what a crew you have with you - so much talent and eye for design.... yup, Team DFS doing it again!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I LOVE BARREL COLONIES! It’s such a statement and also a nice compliment to everything else going on. I wish I had the space and budget for a barrel colony haha
Love the barrels! Agree it’s not easy to make them so balanced. I think I need more for my colony after seeing yours. Than you as always for inspiration. Love this installation
Everything is coming together!❤ I’m surprised anyone would not love barrel colonies! I absolutely love them! I can’t afford the big ones but I have six small to tiny ones 😂. I can’t wait till they grow and flower. The mangave tapestry is beautiful 😍
Your barrel colonies look great. If people think they are under designed try looking up the colonies at the Huntington botanical garden. Once they mature they can look pretty stunning.
Everything looks great Laura as always. And don’t worry about the haters so much. Usually people with the least experience have the most advice in any topic! You’re awesome
The barrel colony is well done… there is a beautiful barrel colony at the entrance of one my favorite resorts in carefree Az, ‘the boulders’ … it’s stunning… this was very well done. I personally would like to see some tricolor Crassula and kiwi aronium filled in around the sides… or some continuous edge softener, other than elephant food and with more yellow… I’m just always looking for places to use that particular combo right now. A mixed tapestry would be too much, although I wouldn’t hate it… it’s great the way it is though. Truly well done.
I've seen you do it and still watch in wonder that with that many barrels, no one ends up studded with thorns. The soil elevations, cactus tilt & groupings, boulder placement and rock top dressing make it a design masterpiece.
I am doing my garden here in Pico Azores with lava rocks, there is no scarcity of those here! Lol you have inspired me Laura (my name too) locals here are already admiring and I haven’t even put the succulents in yet 🤣
Looking good. I wouldn't go with black rock in the raised bed in the rear. I feel it will retain and radiate too much heat. (Not for the plants but the people in the area)
I agree about the black rock in the raised bed. Not because of the heat (I'm pretty sure the cactus can take it) but I just think it won't look right. It'll work in the front yard barrel colony because it has the light stucco wall behind it and the light pavement in front of it, but in that red brick-topped bed I think a light-colored top-dressing would look better. JMHO, though- Laura is the succulent and cactus expert, so she's the boss!
Their natural habitats are becoming endangered. The ones purchased from garden centers were grown commercially. They’re used abundantly for landscaping here in Phoenix Arizona.
when u said you were going to do tapestry, i was thinking, "really" shouldn't it be a barrel cactus along that front. and then on the second day, you said you decided to use barrels and i thought, "YES!!!". and i loved the way it looked yesterday with the clusters of families of barrels big and small and gaps between the families but today, i don't know if i just didn't see the angle right, but i felt it looked too much. there isn't enough breathing room between the clusters. but i just love the idea of the barrel cactus and the elevated one with the single cactus, and beautiful boulders, that was awesome. here in houston, we can't get such big barrels, so i made mine with tiny barrels. lol
I can’t believe people are making rude comments about your amazing work. I got a little annoyed when it was about your more bold designs. And now stuff about the barrels. If your prfered style is muted everything find someone to follow that only designs that way. I’m here for all of it. The succulent reefs make me drool, the more monochromatic designs you’ve done are amazing as well.
Laura have you/Greg ever made a fountain out of a big chunk (or stacked large pieces) of that Oro Verde rock, or is it too soft for that type of application? It is so, so beautiful!
I love a barrel colony. They grow more solitary in nature, so designs that create big stands using solo and grouped plants look so cool. But listen... I love a cactus colony in general... Give me some fero, echino, and pringlei grouped together, stunning.

The design if out of this world ❤. I cannot wait to do a smaller version of the barrell cactus 🌵, I love it 🎉 The oro? bolder is gorgeous. Did I spell it correctly?❤❤❤ Great job 😊😊
the barrel cactus colonies look almost natural, maybe that's what they mean by "no design?" it takes hard work to make things look naturally beautiful! lol
Who else now wants a barrel colony ?? Laura is getting us all addicted to them hahaha
UMMM YES!! :)

That view sure was nice.
Those barrel colonies are so intricate & interesting. Love them
The magic happens when you have a difficult design, yet it looks “simple”. The front and back gardens look stunning at this installation! Bravo!
