Well, the Journey to the West stays perhaps the most well known Chinese tale, perhaps only Mulan is more famous, especially since the Disney animation movie. So no, the Western audience "in general" won't just consider it a rip off of the Souls like games. On the other hand, the bleak tone, filled with regrets and sadness, is very inspired by Elden Ring, Bloodborne and Dark Souls. That doesn't mean that the game won't be appreciated for itself. The art design is gorgeous, the characters intriguing (fantastic if you know the tale and a bit of Chinese mythology). The only thing, the main character is just a blank vessel. But amazing. How to encapsulate a love story in a few minutes. It's Pixar level in term of emotion (I'm referring to the opening of Up, even if Pixar had more time)
The pronunciation of "pig" and "spider" in Chinese is very similar, with the pig pronounced as "zhu" and the spider pronounced as "zhizhu". This is probably the reason for their love.
Spider is Chang'e's maid. She fell in love with Bajie at first sight, but Bajie liked Chang'e. However, Chang'e was with the gods, so the gods exiled Bajie and the maid to the human world. Bajie became a pig demon and the maid became a spider, but the maid always loved Bajie. Unfortunately, Bajie did not love the maid! This story tells us never to love someone who doesn't love you!
i mean the game is great and all. But what a pity they didn't mention the rest of the gangs: The Tang monk, the river yaoguai disciple and the white dragon horse
Technically aside from Wukong and Bajie/Pigsy being such integral characters in the game Sandy I think gets seen in the boat trip at the end of the game as one of Wukong’s memories (the dragon swimming in the water at 2:54:10 I think is Sandy considering he was a dragon river spirit). Tang as Jinchizi is in the chapter 3 ending music video and gets mentioned at least a few times by Bajie/Pigsy in the game. Dragon Horse is out of luck. I didn’t spot him lol. But obviously all of them make an appearance together again during the music video ending for the true ending. But I do wish they actually showed up all together again in the actual game instead of the animations.
As an East Asian guy, I grew up watching the Journey to the West TV series, and this darker and more intense version brings me so much joy. I mean look at those huge bosses/villains, the designs are so epic.
Damn the part with the Bull king and Wukong really got me. We used to have things like that but we can't have that now because that's now called toxic masculinity
But isn't that sort of the point? That these characters are sort of toxic? And their own need to for glory and significance led them down some very bad paths?
DAMN I MUST SAY THE ADAPTATION OF THIS GAME IS STRICT TO THE NOVEL! I come from a long line of Chinese heritage, so i grew up watching wukong. The most surprising part is the music at the end! It is the pièce de resistence of the movie that I watched! It turns me so much back to my childhood!
We are all born as monkey kings. Initially full of ego about our power and potential, desires, basically good, ignorant, rebellious etc. As we go through life we learn our shortcomings, hopefully overcome our shortcomings and become enlightened. Sun Wukong is a brilliant, deep and philosophical story with Buddhist roots
For anyone interested to learn more about Wukong. Watch the movie "A Chinese Odyssey" Part 1 and Part 2. They are both on RUclips for free and Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer & Kungfu Hustle) was the lead. You will not regret watching this timeless classic. Mark my words
If you can get to the last level, let me share with you a piece of knowledge: There is a forbidden magic in Journey to the West called Faxiang Tiandi, which only Yang Jian and Wukong can master. The effect of the spell is that it will turn into a huge image with the sky above its head and the ground beneath its feet. The lion is just one manifestation of the art of change.
These cutscenes are a work of art. As for the game overall, from what I gathered since Aug 20 to today, many of the players so far put give this a solid 8/10 to 9/10. Everyone has their own take on hardness and interests, but overall positive views seems to be the general consensus. It could very well be GOTY.
I may be wrong but don't think it's official. More like reimagined what happened after. All he ever wanted was to not die and keep his kind with him. But his journey to seek immortality took him to the path of journeying to the west with monk xuan zhang for the scriptures.
Loving the lore of Black Myth Wukong! The way it intertwines with the Journey to the West legends is fascinating. Immersive Translate made the cultural context much clearer.
I know there are monkeys in Indian religions, but Wukong is not even remotely similar to them, especially not to Hanuman. 😂 Wukong is essentially a character who tried his best to fight for his freedom and eternal happiness, but ends up being subdued by authority (both Buddha and the Chinese Taoist gods) and has to work for them. He had to help a Chinese monk during a long journey to obtain Buddhist scriptures from the West, or India. It’s a sad story for Wukong. It basically hints children who love freedom and adults who have to work and become part of the system. The broader context is the struggle between Buddhism and Chinese Taoism for more believers in China during the Tang Dynasty, around 1,000 years ago. But nevertheless, unlike most other countries, religions are never a critical part of Chinese daily lives. We believe in our ancestors and ourselves more than any god.

well, the first time the buddha banished him, he did wreck havoc in the celestial court and stole a bunch of ambrosia foods. Buddha gave him a chance to redeam himself. The second time though, after he became a Buddha and given a position in the court, which is the original story from this game, they did do the monkey dirty.

As somoene who is relatively new to the Sun Wukong Mythos, and most of my knowledge comes from the Lego Monkie Kid cartoon, i still think I managed to follow along to most of this. The biggest difference is, here everyone's actual Chinese names are bwing used, whereas in tne cartoon, the majority of characters are given simplified names. Example, the Bull character is simply Demon Bull King, or DBK, along with his Beloved wife, Princess Iron Fan, and even his Son, Red Sun (Or is it Red Boy?) The cartoon also refrences the Samadhi Fire, The Lady Bone Demon, Ne Zha, Azure Lion, the story of the Yellow Robed Sage, all of which, If not most of it, im pretty sure i recognized when they appeared in these scenes. But now im wondering, if Sun Wukong Dies, and we play through the game as Dark haired monkey, using Sun Wukong's Fighting Style. If thats the case. Are we playing as just a random Silent Protag with a darkwr asthetic, or are we playing as Macaque?
This game is the best thing that have happens in these years. The story, plot and animation are truly top-not. This game is based on the story "journey to the west" which is a really popular novel and series in China
You’ve got to admit the music really helps make such a narrative perspective in every game such as this but also agreeing to everyone it would be cool if there was a English sub and original(Chinese) dub to this gameplay
@@xposelies2417Good point. The same people complaining about people complaining about this game are the people who forget that this game is so big exactly because it offers representation for Chinese gamers
Please don't think of the game's plot as Journey to the West! The developers claim to be based on the original Journey to the West, but many of the plots are actually from conspiracy novels on the internet and an MMO(斗战神/douzhanshen/Asura) that was once a project of their developers. For example, the love story between the Monkey King(sun wukong) and the White Bone Monster(bai gu jing), the love story between Piggy(zhu bajie) and the Spider Monster(zhi zhu jing), and the fact that Red Child(hong hai er) is a boy in the original story, but the game's Red Child was born when Princess Iron Fan drank the water of the River of childbearing, which can only give birth to a girl, which means that the game's Red Child is a transgender. These changes are hard to accept for most people who have seen Journey to the West, and there has been some controversy on Chinese social media so far (Use Google Translate, some names may not be the same as in the game)

In Hindu-Buddhist philosophy, yes, our "Monkey Mind" is to be harnessed.

It could very well be GOTY.
so this story is about after the great journey of wukong and his friends, am i correct ?
Yes
I may be wrong but don't think it's official. More like reimagined what happened after. All he ever wanted was to not die and keep his kind with him. But his journey to seek immortality took him to the path of journeying to the west with monk xuan zhang for the scriptures.

WOW, that was very interesting and detailed. I live in the 🇺🇸 (Florida) and this was Mosley all new to me. So thank you for explaining a lot of it to me! That being said, I had to say my favorite is the singing guy with no head! Something about the song is just very catchy👌👍👍👍👍
It's a fictional novel by Wu Cheng'en, a novelist from Ming Dynasty. Based on the journey of Xuanzang, a Tang Dynasty monk.
well, the first time the buddha banished him, he did wreck havoc in the celestial court and stole a bunch of ambrosia foods. Buddha gave him a chance to redeam himself. The second time though, after he became a Buddha and given a position in the court, which is the original story from this game, they did do the monkey dirty.

The music scoring in this game was phenomenal!
Example, the Bull character is simply Demon Bull King, or DBK, along with his Beloved wife, Princess Iron Fan, and even his Son, Red Sun (Or is it Red Boy?)
The cartoon also refrences the Samadhi Fire, The Lady Bone Demon, Ne Zha, Azure Lion, the story of the Yellow Robed Sage, all of which, If not most of it, im pretty sure i recognized when they appeared in these scenes.
But now im wondering, if Sun Wukong Dies, and we play through the game as Dark haired monkey, using Sun Wukong's Fighting Style. If thats the case. Are we playing as just a random Silent Protag with a darkwr asthetic, or are we playing as Macaque?

@@xposelies2417Good point. The same people complaining about people complaining about this game are the people who forget that this game is so big exactly because it offers representation for Chinese gamers
I've finished the game, and i little bit cry along my journey from the sad backstories...
These changes are hard to accept for most people who have seen Journey to the West, and there has been some controversy on Chinese social media so far
(Use Google Translate, some names may not be the same as in the game)
