Very interesting hearing a bit about the origins of Beowulf! Very thankful someone was willing to risk themselves to save the manuscript. Need to look more into Signet Classics, $5 for a new book is great.
There is a new translation by Tom Shippey that is supposed to be quite good. It would be interesting to compare it with the translation in your Signet version. It still fascinates me that this even has come down to us from such a long time ago.
@@binglamb2176 there are so many translations a person could literally do nothing but read Beowulf over and and over. It's pretty wild. Interesting you mention Shippey. I just listened to a Tom Shippey interview discussing his translation of the text.
Hey I actually have that same Signet edition. :) I tried reading Beowulf several years ago but iirc I dnf'd it cuz I found it kinda boring. Although I do quite like the 2007 animated film adaptation of it. And John Gardner's Grendel is a pretty great read too.
