True Story: I grew up in a very small town in Iowa, USA in the early 1990s (pre-internet) A group of friends and I heard "Fire" by The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown at a County Fair and we immediately loved it! Over the course of several hours at the fair, the song played three times (all songs were likely on a cassette tape which was switched over at the end of play) but nobody working the event knew anything about the song other than the name was "Fire" I have NEVER HEARD the song since, and had completely forgotten about it.
Fast forward to LITERALLY NOW and not only have I received the answer to my 35 year old question, but I now have 4 phone calls to make! Thank You WMUK!
Fire was a UK number 1 in the summer of 1968, replacing Mony Mony by Tommy James and the Shondells. Although not British, and therefore not eligible for this list, their song Crimson and Clover was a great example of US psych.
I can thank my dearly departed mother for introducing me to all of these timeless songs. She would always sing "Nights in White Satin" to me, as a Lullaby.

I wasn’t born in the 60’s. Was born in 75 but my dad was always listening to music and it influenced me and my music choices and listening. So he was listening to strawberry fields when he was a teen and then I listened to the Candy flip version in the 90’s. I was wearing flares for a bit, as he was in the 60’s. These are all great tracks and goes to show, what goes around, comes back around. Now at nearly 50, I’m seeing it happen again. Life is a cycle and it’s amazing. Much love everyone 👍🏻❤️

I think this should have been a top 20 list to add such songs as The Creations' :How Does It Feel" and Traffics "Hole In My Shoe".

Nights in white satin and wider shade of pale are too soft to be psychedelic
I would put "Ride my See Saw" by the same group instead of nights in white satin.
I would put "Evil Hearted You" by the Yardbyrds instead of whiter shade of pale because of Jeff Beck guitar licks
I would put Papaer Sun by Traffic and Pictures of Matchstick man by Staus Quo.
There are many songs I believe should be on the list in place of Whiter Shade of Pale, Nights in White Satin, and Fire. Beatles songs like Love You to and Tomorrow Never Knows, or if they are bit too 'out there' there are handfuls of other songs by the likes of Pink Floyd and Cream which I reckon represent Psychedelia much better.
