@@Gwgw_rapt Hi I started learning from a book by Phylliss Hoffman. She has plenty books about sewing. My journey started back in 2000. You tube videos make it so easy these days. You start by learning how to draw a basic bodice. All you need is a ruler a large piece of paper and a pencil or pen. Thoughtful creativity on You tube make things so easy.
Exactly. I studied and practiced for some years. I then applied at a NY fashion school to make contacts w ppl in the field. I applied and interviewed and toured and spoke w everyone at school then spoke w alumni from the schools. I learned that what I was looking for, I was never going to get by attending school.
As an afterthought, this is some good information about fashion design. I won the best dressed award two years in a row (3rd, 4th grade), and as a young girl it put a lot of pressure on me. Fortunately, my mother was in charge of my wardrobe choices, but she always took me shopping for clothes, showed me things, and allow me to pick out things. Everything was the typical children's clothing, nothing fancy or pricey. I subscribed to all the fashion magazines, which helped to form my taste in clothes. I spent time researching different schools, and visited some in NY and one in California. I never made it to fashion school, but I did earn some certificates in fashion. As I got older, I think of my friendship with women, and realized that it is good to have a good following which I don't have. I thought maybe being a designer of women's clothing was not in the cards for me. So, I'm comfortable with learning how to sew, which I found out that fashion designers do the sketches, come up with the ideas, but I love sewing clothes. I wanted to sew because my older sister used to make clothes. My mom bought her a sewing machine and supplies, so she sewed at home. She was an encourager in me wanting to pursue that dream.
I don’t have a degree , but I been sewing for more then 20 years , I don’t make millions but its a satisfying feeling that I’m doing what I love, also the designs I can probasell them oinline
I want to go to scad and i want to major in Fashion Design, Im 14 year old and it truly is my dream to study fashion, I’ve always been fascinated by runway fashion and art, my whole life all i cared about and only earlier this year i found out that art school was a thing i didn’t even know it existed😂. I personally dont think i would be disappointed in studying any form of art, like art is literally everything to me and just the thought of getting taught things about art really just makes me happy. I even went to scad day with my family and was fascinated by what they had to offer. So im glad people are making videos like this give me a lot of insight.
I graduated from SCAD in 2020 with a BFA in Fashion Design. I think everything she’s said is valid. I haven’t found a job yet or had enough money to start my own collection.I challenge you to start interning now. Go to businesses that correlate with your brand and aesthetic and see if they have intern opportunities. Actually build your portfolio. Make a 8 look collection. These are things I wish I told my 14yr self.
Start doing loads of object/nature drawings now as this is the basis for an art, fashion degree. Mond you in 2023 there's digital art also, which is fun! Also, you can do work experience, so maybe talk with parents and apply now. Contact all the designers in London? I did w.e with Zandra Rhodes. Her fabrics were beautiful, but I disliked using children in Asia to do the Embroidery and Not paying them.
I am 13 years old and I LOVE fashion. Sewing makes me happy and the thought of fashion runways or anything about fashion makes me feel inspired. Ever since I was 6 years old I loved drawing designs and I wanted to make them real. At 8 years old I discovered fashion designers, I didn't know they existed 😅 but ever since, I knew I wanted to become one. But the thing is, I am worried I don't have time to develop my sewing skills and a lot of people says that there's a very low chance of me becoming successful because being a fashion designer is hard here in the Philippines. Now, I am considering being a lawyer but I still feel like it's not for me. I want to become a fashion designer to make special occasions be more special for the clothes that they wear and I want to make people feel beautiful and comfortable with what they are wearing, I want them to speak through what they wear. But somehow, I feel like I won't be able to do that because I don't have a lot of experiences and I don't even know how to sew right. I feel like giving up on the dream that I have ever since I was young.
baby, you will win experience with the time you spend in this, follow your dreams and don’t listen what the people say about what you need or not to be a successful fashion designer, you will be successful if you really work on that, believe more in yourself.
I’ve graduated from LCF in 2009 with BA in Fashion & Clothing. I was lucky, because when I started I just paid £900 a year. I was a home student. Right before 4th year of my graduation they changed the finance plan. It started to cost £3,500 for home students & something like £7,000+ for foreign students. Good knows how much it costs now. However, we were allowed to complete our degree continuing paying £900 per year. Btw, it was part-time BA program, two evenings a week and one Saturday. What can I say? Fashion/Design is very broad degree. Some of us ended up working in retail headquarters for various jobs such as merchandising & buying (me), I didn’t need to have buying degree. But, I work in marketing now (it suits my personality better) One girl ended up working as head technologist at Karen Millen. One girl is senior manager at Burberry Head Office at some department. One girl ended up teaching at LFC on the same course, later got promoted to course leader role. But she continues to study all her life, now wants to do PHD. The best thing that I gained from this college - the best friends for life. We still meet together so many years later. We travel together. Studying there, was the best decisiob of my life.
