- Arguably the worst umpire in baseball history. It’s either Jim Joyce, Angel Hernandez, CB Bucknor or Joe West but none of the other guys have ever blown a perfect game on the final out... good luck topping that.

Blown Perfect game was Detroit against CLEVELAND and the blown foul tip call was Houston against CLEVELAND... Hmmm
Oh no... a Cleveland sports team (or even an Ohio sports team) gets a call to go their way...
Galarraga threw a perfect game
Also, it was a foul ball, not a foul tip. If you're going to criticize people, it might be good to make sure you get the terms right yourself.
@@jeffgordon2409 : That wouldn't be the first time that the Indians, or any team from Cleveland, got the benefit, but it sure as hell is no more than the 2nd time.
Yes, the Browns have been disrespected and not been fairly treated by the officials since Jim Brown was in our backfield.
@@nathandahl9233 Agree. People who are too ignorant to know the difference between a foul ball and a foul tip should not be throwing any stones at ANYone else. And, as has been pointed out several times, the obstruction call at third base was absolutely the right call. Anyone who says different simply does not understand the rule
i will say this...he at least admitted he got the call wrong on the perfect game play, and apologized for it, im pretty sure most of the other umpires wouldnt have
I'll never be a Jim Joyce fan, he's as bad as Joe West. But you gotta give him props for publicly admitting he blew the call that cost the Tigers that game. That was a Don Denkenger level blown call.
I didn't hear an apology, just heard he missed the call.
@@scout805you might be right, but I'm sure he did apologize at some point
@@everettgrover9459 very true, but the end of this video didn't have it. I'd sure hope so brah.
@@scout805 I hope so too, course it could have been off camera too,
Jim Joyce definitely wasn't the worst umpire. in fact he was one of the most respected umps by players and managers. everyone has bad days.
He really screwed the pooch in that perfect game, though. Dude was out by a good step. At least it helped us get replay.
He owned up to it, too, instead of hiding behind excuses like Hernandez or Bucknor.
Amen
Mister Hoodrich ya he saved someone’s life with cpr but that perfect game just ruins his reputation
He definitely was bad, he cost that detroit pitcher a perfect game!
The World Series one is the right call
I know but it’s one of his most infamous calls so i added it.
I was about to comment the same thing lol
I agree middlebrooks did trip Craig , but the Red Sox still won that same World Series.
@@JB-vi8xt Should have ran different path, there was plenty of room.
T Bird not at all. The runner is not forced to run in a certain direction
Being that his career was 30 years a 6 minute video isn't bad. I think he was a great umpire..
Angel Hernandez could have a video as long as his career
Garrett Strand if you know the name of the umpire, he is bad, you never hear the name of a good umpire
@@kevinwright7728 if u have ever impaired u truly would know how hard it is but clearly ur perfect soo
Yeah agreed. As umpire goes he was actually very good.
@@kevinwright7728 That's not true. I know the name Ed Hochuli, not because he's a bad referee, but because he's one of the best. So good in fact, that one time when he felt he made an egregious error, he admitted it postgame publicly and apologized to Seattle I believe. I can't remember the team, but it was probably the classiest move by an official.
Kevin Wright Then explain Greg Gibson. He is a legendary ump
The players voted Joyce as best umpire a year or two before he retired
He’s a good person and saved a womans life so it’s no surprise.
Yeah people are idiots. This ump sucks
Even the best umpires blow calls from time to time. Isolating Joyce's errors on a RUclips video as proof that he "sucks" is, in baseball terminology, bush league. The players liked and respected him for a reason.
He had actually just been voted best umpire by the players a few days before that perfect game snafu.
@@Detroit_Dawg You are definitely one of the "idiots".
Jim Joyce was arguably the BEST umpire in the game. Saying he's on par with Hernandez, Bucknor, or West is BS. That blown call on the "imperfect game," is going to go down in infamy, but he manned up and instead of making excuses or hiding behind a spokesman he owned it as his mistake alone. I actually remember seeing the opening of the following game; he was behind the plate, and came out in tears as the crowd in Detroit gave him an ovation. That to me is the mark of a good umpire.
Cal Leferink don’t include Joe West..joe is fantastic. You might not like him because he’s a red ass and takes no bs...but he is a great umpire especially on the dish
@@jaydesrochers3276 - Joe might be a good umpire in the technical sense. He generally gets his calls right and seems to know the rules pretty well. What makes West a bad umpire, or at least gives him that reputation, is that he constant interjects himself into calls he had no part in. Or that he calls more attention to himself than umpires are supposed to do. One time he literally called time, walked over to first base (from his spot at 3rd) and arbitrarily overturned the call because in his opinion he was right and his first base umpire wasn't.
Captain Cardsworth well every crew chief interjects himself, into the situation. That’s part of their job. To get things moving..When you look at lifetime ejections, he really doesn’t have a ton for the amount of time he’s spent in the league. And he has done a LOT of games. He DOES open his mouth sometimes, but he really respects the game. Like when he talked about 4hour 1-0 Red Sox Yankees games being ridiculous...he was RIGHT..but it’s not his place. Personally, I’ve always liked guys like Joe, and John Hirschbeck, who do a,great job on the field, yet take no crap, and don’t leave the dirty work for the next crew coming to town
I'm pretty sure you mean angel Hernandez is the best
Totally agree
You seriously saying Joyce was bad as Hernandez and Bucknor? Dude....no. He was usually rated the best by the players too.
CB isn't as bad as angel man
Or Joe West.
Jim Joyce is one of the best, classiest umpires the MLB has ever had. He made some mistakes, but he was usually correct and when he was wrong he admitted it.
If you were a tigers fan you would understand.
Some mistakes, more like "The mistake", and he is going to be remeber for it for a as long as the sport exist.
@@Venulareye2835 I’m a tigers fan and I still respect Joyce. He blew a very important call, so what he’s human. He owned it, apologized, and has now even petitioned to get the call officially overturned. You can’t hold peoples mistakes against them forever especially when they do everything in their power to make amends. Holding it over his head a decade later is childish, let it go man it’s just a game.
@@Venulareye2835 as a tigers fan I was furious at first but I’m also an umpire one of the hardest things as an umpire is to admit u made the wrong call because if u do both coaches would be all over when Joyce made that call at 1st u can tell he knew immediately he was wrong but he couldn’t change the call I met jim Joyce one time at the airport we talked about that and he said he almost quit umpiring after realize how bad the call was. Not sure why the World Series call is here. It was a great call!
Didn't matter in the end, the Cardinals didn't stand a chance!
I still say it was a bad call. Craig initially stumbles when trying to stand up after sliding into third and puts both hands on Middlebrook's back. Now how exactly is he supposed to move out of the way? That's a play they should have just let play out.
Cinci4life middlebrooks is supposed to not intentionally obstruct him by putting both of his legs up in.
@@shrimp19921you missed the point. They are both equally guilty of obstruction which is why I think either you let the play play out or stop play at that point and keep the runner at third.
@@cinci4life116 he put both legs up to trip the runner because he knew the runner would score. It was clear as can be in replay live. It was the perfect call, very unsportsmanlike behavior to say the least. Could have injured the runner
The obstruction call was 100% correct if you go back and look at the replay you can clearly see the 3rd baseman lift his legs to trip up the runner. Excellent call no I'm not a fan of either team.
This man knows what he is talking about
There is no situation or circumstance where a person flat on the ir stomach lift both feet in the air as a means to get up, or stay out of the baserunners way. Obstruction clear as day
clearly obstruction
I’m a Sox fan and I agreed with his call
The way He and Armando Galarraga handled the blown perfect game was awesome. They both earned my respect.
I thought this was a troll joke video at first; everybody knows that Joyce was one of the absolute best umpires in recent memory; all umpires make mistakes, but not only did Joyce have a great track record and a consistent strike zone, but he manned up and admitted fault when he took that perfect game away from Galarraga.
The obstruction call awarding home to the runner from third base was correct, and a really good eye to catch it. The blown call at first that cost Gallaraga his perfect game was a travesty that probably haunts Jim Joyce to this day. If only replay had been around in its current form, that would have been easily corrected. It wasn't the first blown call at first, but one that's so obviously bad no longer stands.
@Hehdhchrydhd Duunhdjrjdjdj boston. Still the correct call
Imagine calling the best ump in MLB history the worst ump over like 5 bad calls.
His perfect game call is devastating
Absolute devastation!
It really is. I’m glad that he admitted he was wrong but it’s important that you get it right
Elena Singer the commissioner should’ve awarded Gallaraga a perfecto. Jim Joyce did what he had to basically. If he didn’t own up to it then it would’ve never died down.
Sure was and he owned up to it. Admitted it too. He’s a great ump. Has a distinct strike call that only he has.
I've never seen the Joe Thiesman broken leg video .. I don't want to see it...I've seen this call at first more than a few times and every time I see it, I wish I hadn't... I hate it! Bugs the hell outta me!

-Jim Joyce
The world series call was the right call in my opinion
It was
Jim Joyce has no reason being considered with those other names as the worst umpires. Of course the blown perfect game call was bad but at least he owned up to it and admitted his mistake. Jim Joyce is one of the better umpires in the game when you look at his overall body of work unlike Angel Hernandez or Joe West who continually make ridiculous calls and look for fights with anyone for any reason.
I know Jim Joyce personally, and you'll never meet a more studious, conscientious umpire in baseball. That showed when he admitted to missing the call in the Gallerago game. I don't know if I've ever heard any other umpire say that like he did. Also, you can see the respect the managers gave him in the way that they argued his calls. They weren't screaming, irate like a crazy person, when talking to Jim Joyce, they knew that they were close calls and were tough to make. Hernandez and West are not in the same class as Joyce is, not by a long shot.
The Cardinals play was good call
Hehdhchrydhd Duunhdjrjdjdj Boston in 2013
Jim Joyce was one of the best umpires to ever work at the Major League level. Not only was he consistently accurate behind the plate and on the bases, he was highly respected by both players and coaches throughout his career. Just like every umpire, he missed a few calls here and there, as do all umpires. He also made some courageous and awesome calls, such as the 2013 WS obstruction call at third base that ended the game. It was the exact right call, and he nailed it!
Videos like this that demean one of the best to ever work the game are inaccurate and deceiving. Yes, he blew this call. The whole crew did. It's a very hard call to make due to the angle. It doesn't make him a bad umpire. I'd like to see you strap on the gear and do that job. I did it for 15 years at the high school and NCAA Division II level. It's a lot tougher than it looks.
"It's a lot tougher than it looks".
Umpiring looks tough as s*t. Especially at a major league level, where everything happens remarkably fast.
Angel Hernandez is an worst umpire in history with out arguments
I think they all have their "levels of suck." Lol
@Stephen Gossman pff mlb assigned hernandez otherwise hernandez was gonna sue mlb for racial discrimination. Its not because hes a good umpire or something hes just straight up garbage
Joe West has been blowing calls since the 80s. lol
@Stephen Gossman I don't know where you get your stats from, but from everything that I have read, players just do not like Hernandez and for good reason. Check some of his work out here on RUclips.
@Stephen Gossman very good comment here Stephen Grossman.
Being an umpire is a job where you are only as good as your worst call. Jim Joyce's worst call happened to cost someone a place in the record books, so most people forget that he really wasn't close to being another Angel Hernandez.
I love these videos, I feel like they're going to be historical one day, when this great game goes to all digital umpiring.
The obstruction call was called correct by rule. And I'm a Red Sox fan. The blown call in the perfect game was bad, but it was unusual and he owned up to it.
The one with St. Louis and Boston wasn't even a bad call. I would've called the same thing
The play at 4:20 was correct. I don’t know what y’all are complaining about for that one.
Sam DeLong the player has the right to go for the ball dumbass
I said the World Series ones was the right call
Love the music choices for your outros. Leagues and bounds better than the trap rap beats a lot of other highlight channels have
The one with the cardinals and Red Sox was actually correct though. If u look in the replay, the third baseman raises his feet when Craig was trying to score. It’s obstruction because no play was being made on the ball since it was already past him and he blocked Craig from running
Other then the blown call at Detroit, which was handled exceptionally well by both sides of it, none of these show that "he sucks" or anything along those lines.
Not many umpires would care so much to go out of there way to admit they ruined a perfect game. That takes a lot of courage. I know Tigers fans were definitely salty, maybe still are, but gotta respect that.
@4:25, that’s a legitimate obstruction call.
Hehdhchrydhd Duunhdjrjdjdj
2013 Red Sox 4-2 over the Cardinals.
Umping 162 games a year, you will no doubt mess up really bad a few times... and that's all this is... it is not an epidemic with this man.
The first and last call were terrible. However, he manned up and admitted he was wrong which is way more than most of these other egomaniac umps will ever do.
The two ejections were absolutely the right call and the World Series call was 100% correct. I have No problem with Jim Joyce. Very good umpire and owns it when he messes up.
You know guys, some times you just have to accept that they are human and make mistakes. The first one, he can't see the ball hit the bat and to be fair, checks, the Cards one is a correct call and the last one, he admits himself he blew it. Not an easy job, you should try it, and if you have please tell us you never blew a single call.... Go and count how many excellent calls he has made and how many poor calls he has made....
The foul tip in the beginning looked like the batter was trying to play cricket xD
Saying Joyce is on par with Hernandez or West is a crime.
I've been a Tiger fan for 43 years and I was glued to the TV for that game. It really doesn't matter to me though. Literally every human on earth that knows anything about baseball knows that was a perfect game. Galarraga knows it was a perfect game, Jim Joyce knows it was a perfect game, Jason Donald knows it was a perfect game. If it had been any out from #1 through #26, then I'd say that the blown call may have changed the way the game was played, so we'd never know if it would have still been perfect, but since it was out #27, there is no debate. The game ends the moment he steps on 1st base. It doesn't need to be written in the record books to be true.
4:31 that’s a good call i learned about this exact play in umpire camp
The obstruction call in the World Series was only controversial because it ended a World Series game
You know what is worse than the blown call perfect game. It is that the next day the commissioner and the head of umpires both said that yes they knew the call was blown and yes they could change it but no they were not going to. Yes you read that right. They decided to go with the blown call.
Another reason why people didn't get upset when Bud stepped down.
Galarraga has perfect game stolen from him. Even the runner knew he was out. What a travesty.
And shame on the commissioner for not overturning the call. The umpire made a mistake, the commissioner chose to let it stand.
I'm not sure why this popped up again, but this was the only channel I've ever unsubscribed to. Glad I did lol
Jim Joyce was a good ump. A few bad calls, but the missed no no just amplified it.
@IBLizZaRD x well, hell, worse! And I never thought of it, but too bad he didn't call time and go to the hp ump for help. It seems he would have had some doubt and considering the magnitude of the game.
First call, that is not Joyce’s fault. He was not in a position to see the foul. The field umpires should have seen the foul. Secondly, the interference on the third baseman is the correct call.
Imagine this as an umpiring crew...
Angel Hernandez
Ron Kulpa
CB Bucknor
Joe West
worst baseball game of all time right there
I'd ask for a refund and leave the game before it even started
And Jim Joyce
Corgi Lover no he is a good ump mason is right by him not being there
And having Phil Cuzzi and Bob Davidson as umpires down the line in a playoff game.
Eric Greg was a sorry ump too. Marlins must have paid him off in the WS against the Braves.
Joyce is actually a really good umpire, just with a very shitty call (Galaraga’s missed perfect game)
I don’t care what people say about Jim Joyce and even umpires in general. They are human beings, they make mistakes. Everyone does. Sure some mistakes cost teams game and what not, but they are human. It gets on my nerves when people say “start using robots”. The umpires are the ones who love the game more than anyone, believe me. I ain’t criticizing this channel or anything, but it’s a lot harder than it looks. No umpire sucks, it’s sad that we define them on their past mistakes. Good channel, but don’t hate on umpires. Make compilations about them, go ahead, but just remember that they are humans as well. Thank you!
I’ve always said that if baseball gets rid of umpires it’ll kill the game. They make it interesting with ejections and blown calls.
WesleyAPEX They do. I love them but then I hate them lol.
Carter I completely agre with you. I also believe robot umps will kill the game of baseball
george nolte A Good Major league umpire mans up and admitted that he was wrong, you don’t see that a lot. I respect Joyce for that.
Keep umpires, make all plays reviewable at umpires discretion/certain number of challenges per team per game, would fix a lot of problems.
This is why baseball needs reviews from coaches and instant replay similar to other sports. And not just the "reviewable" list MLB uses, but a wider range of plays that covers more.
he didn't have the proper angle to see the ball hit the bat in the first clip. He probably heard it. but without seeing it, he can't call it a foul. the sound could have been the bat hitting the ground plate, etc. He called time to stop play , the confer with the other umps. None of them saw the ball hit the bat. So they had no choice but to award the two runs. It sucks. it sucks for the ump too. But if you don't see something . You can't call it. Sadly it happens in sports. Not often, but it does happen.
That's not even arguable the worst video you've done. One call he was absolutely right, confirmed by every umpire outside of Boston. He made a big mistake once and owned up to it...
Who ended up winning the World Series? I forgot.
@@airplanegod Boston
I understand the frustration in the first video but that wasn’t a foul tip. It was just a foul ball. Foul tip means the catcher caught it off the tip and the ball is still live.
Tbh. I like Jim Joyce. The first call was bad but a hard call to make. Obstruction was the correct call. The last one was bad but he apologized for it.
Just to be clear, he only sucks when his call isn't in favor of your team...
Vermont Reptiles you’re right he dose this with every ump that makes a call that is not his way
I didn't see the botched perfect game call when it happened, but it hurts my soul every time I see it now!
Did you notice how AJ Hinch reacted? Although the call was blown, Jim Joyce commanded so much respect among managers and players that even when a manager had a case, they respected the man.
You could put one of these videos together on every official in every sport. They all blow calls here and there.
He would have just explained. "I missed it, but I can't change it"
Not a foul tip... it’s just a foul ball.
Foul tips are ALWAYS caught
Wow the thumbnail is not clickbait! Lol
Too bad the manager challenge started until 2014, the perfect game call would've been EASILY overturned.
Commissioner still could have overturned it but refused.
I’m a Detroit Tigers fan (see prof pic), and I still get flashbacks of that blown call for Armando Gallaraga’s “Imperfect Game”. But, Jim Joyce is the best umpire in the league, and I hope he calls all of our games whenever he can.

Jim Joyce is retired now
Jeff Warren oh. Shows how much I paid attention to baseball this year with the Tigers tanking lol
not Sauer he’s been retired for three years
None of these were bad call except the blow perfect game, which he handled like a professional by admitting his guilt and apologizing.
My observations:
1st ) Joyce missed the foul. He did the right thing by checking with the other umpires. It turned out to be a bad call, but nothing against Joyce on that one.
2nd and 3rd ) Joyce ejected pitcher after 1st pitch of the game. I do not know the context (was there a previous game in which things turned out bad). He could have give a warning. But I give him a thumb up for being consistent as he did the same with the other pitcher at the end of the game.
4th ) Joyce made the right call on an obstruction call at 3rd base.
5th ) It was a bad call. What the video does not show is the manager shouting at him and Joyce took the criticism silently like a man. He also admitted making a bad call in post-game interview.
The cardinals game was the right call because the 3rd baseman put his feet up to get the runner to stumble and be out
Can you please make a video of Ángel Hernández makes good call(s)... hopefully you can get a footage which lasts at least a minute (including the replay)
Jim joyce is a really good umpire okay name one umpire that hasn't made a bad call
The thing that gets me about the blown perfect game was that Jason Donald (who got the "hit") was just as dumbfounded as to why he was called safe.
He shouldn’t have ran at all. Players hardly ever hustle anymore on a ground ball but this moron decides to run on a grounder for the last out of the game in a perfect game... he’s as responsible for blowing the game as the umpire.
He ran it out knowing he was going to be out anyway but he made it close enough that the umpire blew the call.
@@WesleyAPEX Wait are you serious? Lmao that's stupid as fuck
@@WesleyAPEX He's not at fault, he ran hard like any good player would. By that logic, Manny no hustle Machado should be your favorite player. The call sucked, but don't drag random ass players doing their jobs into it.

That first one devastated Jim. If he had been able to have it reviewed it would have been fine. But once a call is made in that situation, its made. At least he owned up to it. More than can be said for West.
Why is the Red Sox, cardinals call in here? That was the right call. Obstruction on the third baseman. But the camera cut off before the replay
Just imagine if Angel Hernandez made that blown call at the end, he would probably smile and laugh like a clown.
Ok first of all, Jim Joyce does not suck. He is one of the most respected Umpires. Second, he’s human. Do you think that he is perfect? He’s not a perfect human being. He is going to have his own opinion on calls. Now, yes he made a bad call, costing a pitcher (I forgot his name) a perfect game. At least he admitted he made a mistake. He even was in tears. He felt so bad. He definitely was a well respected umpire, and he does not suck.
The world series with the cardinlas is actually a good call !! But still a good one to add but jimmy boy was right on this one
Jim Joyce is a great umpire. He had one awful timed bad call.
Remember when the seats were empty back then in Minuiet Maid. Now it’s packed!
Yes Jim Joyce missed the call in 2010 in Galarraga's near-perfect game. But it was JUNE 2. JUNE 2. It was not the World Series as was the case with Don Denkinger. Nor was it the ALCS like it was when Rich Garcia missed Jeffrey Maier sticking his glove over the wall.
Jim Joyce was one of the best umpires in MLB during his era. So was Rich Garcia. So was Don Denkinger. They are HUMAN BEINGS. They make mistakes. The only person who didn't make mistakes was nailed to a cross.
No one:
Wesley: every umpire sucks!
I'm a Tigers fan and was watching the almost-perfect game live. I was so mad, but everyone blows calls. It's easy to judge with instant replay. Having said all of that, Joyce was one of the best umps in MLB while he was there. How could you be mad at him after listening to his post-game interview and seeing him on the field the next day? I have a lot of respect for Jim Joyce.
Jim Joyce was actually known as one of the best umpires of all time. That one awful blown call sucked but he was a great umpire for the most part.
Uhhh....that was an obstruction in the world series. Correct call. And Jim Joyce is repeatedly voted (by the players) as the most liked umpire. Soooo....????
It was a foul ball, not a foul tip. Two different things
What song is that at 2:11?
"Jim Joyce *really* likes Cleveland."
😅💀
These umpires would be perfect family court judges.
You know what pisses me off the most? The fact that when he blew that perfect game, he was standing there, spittin' seeds instead of paying attention like he should be. I understand that he might chew some if he's bored, but seriously? You gotta be focused in that situation, much less any situation.
Jim joyce is the bill buckner of umps. Wasnt a terrible umpire, but made that infamous call that screwed a perfect game and will be known for that
The one in the world series was right. What are you talking about?
Call #1: It’s the wrong call, but it’s a really tough one and the other umpires that grouped up to try to figure it out obviously didn’t help much.
Calls #2-3: Sounds like a dirty slide came before this, so it is a good assumption on his part that batters were being thrown at. I’m all in favor of immediate ejections on intentional HBPs where you have intent and something that happened prior that raises suspicions.
Call #4: We all know this was the right call. Controversial? Yes. Correct? Yes.
Call #5: We all know this was the wrong call. As unfortunate as this play is, he manned up and admitted it as openly as he possibly could.
If this is Jim Joyce’s controversial call compilation, then damn, he is one good ump having just two obvious blemishes on his resumé.
Jim Joyce isn’t honestly that bad. The Red Sox/Cards game was the right call (I’m a Sox fan) because that was blatant obstruction going down the line. If u wanna really shred an ump, theirs a man by the name of Jerry Meals that needs his own video
Jim Joyce had some blown calls, yes. Especially the blown perfect game. But every ump has blown calls. Joyce however owns up to his.
"I missed it from here, to the wall" LOL
