After the Ellen show came Will and Grace and more gay friendly shows. That really started the acceptance we see today - all can be traced back to the coming-out episode. Thanks Ellen. You did make that difference.
Never have I wanted to hug her more than while seeing this heartbreaking video of her breaking down this way. People like Ellen are the reason what makes America great. I want that courage, I want that honesty and I want that convinction.
It's amazing how much progress (gay acceptance) has been made in just the time since this was filmed. Just even having the conversation seems so archaic.
I live in Russia and unfortunately this conversation doesn't seem archaic. It seems too bold amd dangerous. You couldn't possibly see it on TV. What's worse, Russian authorities encourage homophobia for simply political reasons. To divide people into fighting groups and make them feel like gays and lesbians are the main enemies and villains, so that people don't blame the authorities for the mess we have here.
Well, you would want to move to a country where homosexuals are treated as equal, right? That leaves a very narrow list of countries which are hard and expensive to emigrate to.
But Brynn, America may not be perfect, but are still the greatest country on the planet. Consider this a personal invitation to come to America! We would be honored to welcome you as a new US citizen (as long as you register as a Republican that is .. only kidding:-)
Micah Kazlinowski Oh thanks! Nice to see that you are a patriot of your country. So am I. That's why I'm engaged in civics and right tomorrow I'm going to be an observer at local election where fraud is highly expected. I mean the USA gives a good example of human rights achievement and I'd like to help bring them to my country as long as it's possible. It's actually sad that so many people moved out of Russia, because we have fewer active and smart people left to improve the country.
This is so sad. When she's being criticised for all of this. I appreciate you and your courage,Ellen! You rocked , u still do, and u'll always be as wonderful and phenomenal as you've always been.
My favorite quote: "I grew up wanting to be somebody. Then I all of a sudden I wanted to be somebody happy - and that was more important than being somebody."
I'm an American from Tennessee, a state in the ass end of nowhere in the South, and I can confirm this. Also, Southern Hospitality is a fuckin' lie, the majority of people here will only like you if you're a straight white Republican Christian.
Megan De Really? Because I wrote with a thirteen year old recently who lives in Alabama and is bullied at school simply for stating his opinion on Christianity which is that god doesn't exist. The change may be evident in some states while others on the other hand haven't changed at all.
Well, acceptance of the LGBT community and acceptance of people with different believes go together when we're talking about progress, at least in my opinion. But you're right the legislature regarding gay rights made great progress in the last years, however, acceptance of the American public still is too small.
Love how bob iger is on here. He’s the ceo of the Walt Disney Company. The company with the largest gay following, basically calling her and that show too gay. Meanwhile Disney (today)is working on a gay main character show. And they own abc which has a lot of other gay characters on shows. If you work for that company say like at the parks, you are still molded in that heterosexual image. And you are told not to embrace your self. You have to fit the Disney image, which is very heterosexual looking. While their brand ambassadors are very openly gay and walk into work looking like themselves. It’s just very confusing to me. All I know is God bless Ellen. He sent us an angel.
I think it's terrible that such a wonderful and talented person is punished for being herself. Americans can be very cruel and mean, they point their finger at you if you are not the way they want you to be. This is shameful. You go Ellen, although it hurts not to be accepted by many ignorant people, but do you really need them? There are many out there that support you. Great woman, great artist, great soul. I wish her all the luck she deserves it!
It drives me crazy how they mention the “gay agenda.” Ellen was being truthful about her life and looking back at this video it just seems so prejudice. I am so happy that Ellen has been able to thrive in her talk show career as well as how business savvy she is with regards to all of her clothing lines, pet supplies, and too many other endeavors to count! She is a true humanitarian and philanthropist and an amazing human being! Congratulations, Ellen!
i have to admit when i was a christian i was disgusted and weirded out when i saw her coming out episode... but now im atheist and can think for myself... i was brainwashed into thinking that gays werent born that way, but were mentally disturbed.. but now i fully understand that a women being attracted to another women, is no different than me be born liking the opposite sex.
tom slick actually being gay isnt an issue. believe it or not being gay isnt a sin. it's the marriage bit that's the argument but it's not in there either. divorce is in the bible yet ppl say it's a sin. most stitch vs together to make that argument. i've seen it countless times. it's the same arguments ppl used to make for interracial couples. Christianity isn't brainwashing unless ppl use the bible wrong. most do which is the issue. i'm quite comfortable with my spiritual choice. i'm sorry you got bad exposure.
TheCrusaders13 they say god is all knowing.. but if there were an all knowing god.. you think he would have been smart enough to know that relying on text to convey his all important , would be a complete failure, since it would be subject to interpretation. only a man would make up something so flawed.
tom slick that's why its inspired not word for word written. it's not literally god writing; it's inspired by him. and in a way some areas are word for word considering some things have been found true or actually happened. also remember this (most don't) the actual writings were done on dead sea scrolls we have the translations of them. not the actual ones. so in reality yes it is god. we just get what the brits tried to translate. also to we have free will. god doesn't direct us like robots. we chose our own path in life. he just sees all our paths in all our lives. so many things are taken wrong. believe me i've experienced it more than once. man translated the original scrolls to what is now English. therefore flaws abound. many things aren't a failure really. otherwise the bible wouldn't have like 100 different tittles. history moral romantic war books etc. why would one book be able to be used in so many different areas?? not many can say that. besides think on this how would you like someone directing your life step for step. without your approval. i'd hate it. many ppl have also created their own bibles and say it's god. it's not. i've read a few. wow. scary. many things are also not actually in the bible. contrary to what many think. there are many things left out. the bible is the equivalent to a history holy book. it tells you what you need to know for your everyday life. some things aren't there so ppl make stuff up. the world is billions of years old and history is millions yet the bible only covers a small portion. no one said it covered everyday life of the time nor what went on or was legal. so some things aren't there. like i said the original scrolls are the actual words. those are in the vatican. good luck. we get the translations of said scrolls. the KJV is just the closest we got. most are varying translations which shouldn't even be classified as translations. most are the KJV either in the original form or how we talk today. which is different from 'ye olde england'. like i said being gay isn't even in the bible. actually many theologians and historians believed several of the people Jesus healed was actually gay at the time. why isn't in there?? it was illegal to be gay for centuries in varying parts of the world, or in this case europe. jesus pushed away no one and neither should we, or me i guess. Christianity is another one. jesus never formed a religion on earth. that wasn't done until after he died and ascended. read acts it explains it. funny huh? i'm a christian BUT i prefer to say spiritual because that's what jesus actually preached. a spiritual connection. the religion thing is man made. so flawed. except for being jewish. that's the only religion you can be born into. religion and a nationality. double-whammy
She was always true to herself, even when people didn't like her she never apologised for herself. That's why everyone loves her. She's Ellen and she doesn't pretend to be anyone else. God bless Ellen!!!
what disgusts me the most is the fact that they assumed how the audience would react, that the audience would be uncomfortable. they assume that the audience must be all heterosexual homophobes.. So, not only they marginalized ellen, they marginalized millions of the audience like me who actually got so frustrated when the show stopped running.
It sucks how they cancelled the show just because some people, and the ABC execs were mad and disgusted that she came out. But If it were today, ABC would've been more accepting as well as the rest of the world. I was 9 when it ended, and had no idea about it back then. I've seen reruns though. Poor Ellen . . . but 5 years after this interview her talk show began and look where she is today! I'm glad we've come a long way since 1998 but there's still a lot of homophobic bigots out there who can't get out of the 1950s and keep their mouths shut.
Stephen R Just look who the "American people" elected for President and all the idiots he has in pocket. America still got a long way to go. Minorities and the LGBT community still have to fight.
3:56 someday is now, and it's largely in thanks to her. What an inspiration. She wanted to see change in the world, but she didn't just sit around and complain about it, she went out and did something about it!
When I came out gay I expected to be disowned, when that time came friends and family said they knew and it never bothered them. The friend who I thought would take it the worse actually tried to set me up to one if his friends. I thank people like Ellen for fighting for gas rights through the 90s.
Like Ellen said, the same issues were dealt with as on any other show - dating and so on. To leave those issues out would be actively avoiding the fact that she is gay. In other shows it is always clear that characters are heterosexual, so how is this any different?
Louisyed I understand your perspective completely. But a ABC is in the business of making money and has competition with other companies and other shows of that time. Could it be that some viewers simply couldn't relate to being gay and lost interest? What is or was the percentage of gay individuals? Can they carry a shows ratings all on their own?
Never knew that not long ago people were so ignorant, I mean yes there is still a long way to go, but we have come a long way because now alot of people are very open minded, and even ABC has a show supporting gays, The Fosters. I'm happy that I was born into a good place, I was born 1998, and I'm religious but I was told being gay was wrong though never told to hate gays. I don't care if you're religious or not, God never said to hate people, or "sinners". And if you're not religious, not all religious people are ignorant. I support humans, you have to be really ignorant to not support humans. The transgender community is also just coming into light, I think we need to be educated alot more, but overall we're coming up :)
Married With Children lasted four years after Amanda Bearse came out as a lesbian and Will & Grace premiered for a long eight year consecutive run on rival network NBC the very same year of the Ellen cancellation. Then-ABC head Bob Iger is someone who Ellen needs to quit trusting, for the logical answer is that he cancelled her show without outside pressure.
Ellen DeGeneres was a great person, came out and admitted to being gay, had a great TV career until we learned she and others were bigoted towards her own staff and crew.
"our audiences are much more open to differences in race, than they are differences in sexual CHOICE" ... did the word choice hit anyone else in the chest like a dagger? your sexual IDENTITY is far from a choice.
+Janna Carwile I actually did notice that, but the difference I think is that when Ellen says it, it's more like saying who she 'chooses to love [in a way that is open and honest]'. When he says it, it sounds more like he's implying a gay person literally chooses whether they are sexually attracted to someone.
someone has to be the first warrior in every revolution. we are proud about our blond and nice warrior, she took comedy for it, and its another big revolution, comedy to make understand something very deep.
Can i just say ef that abc guy..smiling coi as if he were mocking her and blaming her for things. Like she didn't get enough mockery and rude behavior from others... She's human like anyone else. Only difference is that she has a heart unlike the others. I'm so proud of her, and happy that she no has a show where she can be herself and live the life that she wants to live.
The ABC stance brings to mind the quote from Hamlet: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in our philosophy. " As a child, I loved to capture lightening bugs, butterflies, flies etc in my large mason jar covered with a lid full of air holes. In captivity they beat themselves feverishly against the glass, not knowing it was a barrier. I think people who live in glass houses have a similar problem with what is real and what is not....
No wonder why ABC begin to fall in the ratings with Iger getting rid of so many shows like Ellen, Spin City, My Wife and Kids, The Hughleys, The Practice and NYPD Blue. Although NYPD Blue ended on its own but still that show felt like it could have went on forever. It was that great. Also the end of Monday Night Football and ABC Sports also came under Iger. He ruined ABC putting on garbage like Desperate Housewives, The Bachelor and the Bachelorette. I mean damn. ABC isn't ABC anymore. It's a huge shell of itself. Although in the end Ellen has done very well for herself in the last 20 years and her success is a big fuck you to all the people who doubted her.
sexuality is not a choice or tendency or lifestyle choice. 20 years ago...thank goodness for l word, noah's arc...times have evolved. thank you, ellen!
11:00 so, I demand you to put on a "straight couples in physical acts depicted in this program" disclaimer, because I may not want to watch straight couples supposedly having sex on my television.
I so, so agree with Ellen now, and am so glad for her pioneering a lifestyle of love no matter what. I was a very religious and homophobic person. But that all literally changed when I read ONE book: The Sealed Portion of the Book of Mormon. Yes, it was religious...but it changed my attitude about human beings. We all should just allow each other to BE who we are....and support each other.
Hello Monica, I am pleased by your comment. Growing up I was disgusted with myself, I tried changing who I was but it never worked because you can't pick your sexuality. In a world where people show acceptance it helps you accept who you are. It's nice that you admitted this.
It's so crazy watching this today! She helped change the public's perception of amazing people, who also happen to be gay. In a way she was the Caitlyn Jenner of her time. I'll probably receive a lot of push-back for my previous statement but that is just my personal opinion. However, Ellen is a much better representative for her community compared to Caitlyn, once again that is my personal opinion as well lol.
What a brave woman! This would have been at the start of or the middle of a hard part in her entertainment life. Look at her now! (She's the most important and influential female entertainer in 2018.)
8:00 so what he's trying to say is that they cancelled the show because Ellen is gay and the public don't wanna see that on their TVs. Good. And then you wonder why so many people commit suicide because of bullying, when the guy that should choose to show homosexuality as something normal so as to help people to naturalize it chose instead to take the whole thing out of the air because it wouldn't sell.
wow this is so otherworldly, its like watching some kind of parody mocumentory =P how often does this narrator/interviewer have to say "gaaay" ? it just becomes ridiculously funny xD "america's view of what is just to..gaaay?" xD omg and then that analysis of how many episodes mention "GAAY" subject matter, like this is some deep sirious inquiry into the subject XD
Lots of hate on about how bad ABC was to put on the warnings, not promote the show, and eventually to drop the show. Yeah, maybe in a perfect world they would not have done those things. But this was 1998 people. All those lovely letters were being matched by hate mail of the most disgusting sort. ABC is a COMPANY. They weren't a gay charity. They were scared of the bottom line. Their JOB is to watch the bottom line. Kudos to them for letting her go as far as she did with it. Enough? Maybe not but more than anyone had done before them. For moderate, conservative, corporate America they were cutting edge for their time.
Well, that Mr.President of NBC was a jerk (I hope he's got over the gay issue), but Ellen has proven her talent and power, and no matter what happened to her, she keeps showing the world that there's nothing wrong with being gay. She's hardworking, intelligent and competent and gays are no more different than straight, bi or transgender people. Thanks to people like Ellen, things have changed. You go, girl!
Being gay isn't a sexual tendency. I'm bi and when I have certain for someone if its towards another guy I don't just tend to feel a certain energy. Its not a bad habit that comes and goes its a unchangeable and is always there. Why dont people consider being straight a tendency?
I disagree with the "need" for parental advisories, but have no issue with them cancelling the show. If they were really scared, they would have cancelled her as soon as she started losing sponsors. I applaud them for continuing the show. I used to love her show but I quit watching regularly that last season - not because it was a "gay" show but it just was not a funny show. I am a huge fan of her talk show and watch it all the time!
This makes me cringe... This whole era makes me so mad and I was even born in 1995. These comments by these "adults" are disgusting. If some homophobic prick said some of this stuff to my face, you'd better believe I'd punch them without any thought or hesitation. I'm pansexual so this makes me want to puke.
You have to realize even though you were technically born in that era, you weren't raised in it. Those people were raised in a time where heterosexuality was the norm and the majority of people had very different ideas of what homosexuality was because no one knew anything about it. Most of the people were raised to believe that people chose to be gay and wanted to just have sex with everyone. They were raised to believe that homosexuality was an immoral way of life. However, now most people know that being gay is not a choice and gay people are just as normal as straight people, so the majority don't have a problem with it anymore. You need to be able to see someone else point of view or else you're probably just as closed-minded.
BookieObsessed I was 19-20 when Ellen came out in 1997. 1995 I had just graduated high school, things were SO much different back then even in 1999 when I knew I was gay it was difficult to come out. I felt so bad for seeing her go through this on the last episode. Frankly I had no problem with it, because to me it seemed normal. If you are already LGBT you don't see a difference. The executives on ABC were atrocious at that time. Believe me the 1990's we're so much different than they are now.
dude. ABC guy had the politically correct finesse that companies dream of. towed that line like a pro. then, like any egomaniac of his stature, the seconds of decency ran out and slime poured right through.
i just keep thinking about all the times I saw Paul Reiser being a couple with Helen Hunt in Mad About You and the guy goes "but it wasn't about being heterosexual" right it was just about being in a relationship. just like ellen wasn't trying to make it about being homosexual just about being in a relationship!
There is something about american society that I can't get: It seems totally normal and acceptable, even for children, to display violent scenes, but when it comes to nudity and sex (not to mention gay sex) it is where the line is drawn. Why is it appropiate for a child or teenager to watch shootings and beatings and violence and it is totally unacceptable the glimpse of a naked human body? don't get it.
I do agree with some of abcs views though. Even though the show had been good it focused too little on other subjects. Its like the comedian Gabriel iglesias. He used to bust out half his show about his weight being classified as "fluffy" I loved his comedy but he even admitted on an interview his whole show was about being fluffy and thar he learner to broaden his themes of material. Its the same with Kevin hart. Even though hes hilarious he could be classified as a very black comedian because he focuses on comparing blacks and whites or how blacks do things when he could talk about other subjects too.
After the Ellen show came Will and Grace and more gay friendly shows. That really started the acceptance we see today - all can be traced back to the coming-out episode. Thanks Ellen. You did make that difference.
How crazy that Will & Grace was debuting that Fall, and NBC was courageous enough to not carry a disclaimer. Ellen was ahead of her time!
Ellen made history. Without "Ellen" there not of been "Will & Grace" or "Modern Family". She paved the way for gay rights everywhere. A hero
Will & Grace was groundbreaking, but to me Modern Family is pure buffoonery; a cartoon characterization.
EVIL ELLEN
@@garyblackbourne120 don't you get tired of trolling around?
Amanda Bearse, a former co-worker Modern Family star Ed O'Neil, came out before four years before Ellen and Married With Children still lasted.
One of the most courageous women alive. Ellen will always be a hero to millions.
gary blackbourne why are you here watching this?
To make this wonderfull person cry is just so sad I can't even....
that interviewer is incredible for asking all the right questions
totally agree. She didn't hesitate to get straigh to the point, no matter how unconfortable that could be for the interviewee.

my how times have changed
It's so amazing watching this in retrospect. She is truly amazing.
look where she is NOW
God was truly with Ellen during that time. God Bless YOU Ellen :)
You mean Lucifer was with her
Dale Chawkins oh shut up you make people look bad.
Dale Chawkins if you can't say anything nice at all then don't.

satan was with her and still is..ELLEN is destroying the family and attacking heterosexuality
She was way ahead of her time. Ellen is amazing.
It's amazing how much progress (gay acceptance) has been made in just the time since this was filmed. Just even having the conversation seems so archaic.

I'm stunned that this actually happened in my lifetime and I'm so glad that Ellen is able to do what she's passionate about now xoxo
Asking how gay something is and saying how it's too gay is like saying oh that's too straight
wow 15 + years ago....still a very long way to go....just love who u love :)
Thank u Ellen from us all. You made a giant step possible for all us gays. So sorry you had to have the pain. You were courageous. Jen

ELLEN IS EVIL
Let everybody be who thy are without judging anyone....

I understand your perspective completely.
Then-ABC head Bob Iger is someone who Ellen needs to quit trusting, for the logical answer is that he cancelled her show without outside pressure.
look where ellen is now :) i was only 2 when this aired so glad we have grown as a society though we still have a LONG way to go
look where she is NOW
I love Ellen I don't care if she is gay or not she helps so many people she has a beautiful soul god bless her
Such a Sad moment in Television History! :-(
I'm 22 and it amazes me that people where so backwards even during my own lifetime, it's amazing how far we've come
Ellen DeGeneres was a great person, came out and admitted to being gay, had a great TV career until we learned she and others were bigoted towards her own staff and crew.
Ellen did not deserve the response whenever she came out.
"our audiences are much more open to differences in race, than they are differences in sexual CHOICE" ... did the word choice hit anyone else in the chest like a dagger? your sexual IDENTITY is far from a choice.
Elise Bender Ellen also says for who she chooses to love.
U did well ellen u did it for the greater Gud thank u
Can i just say ef that abc guy..smiling coi as if he were mocking her and blaming her for things. Like she didn't get enough mockery and rude behavior from others... She's human like anyone else. Only difference is that she has a heart unlike the others. I'm so proud of her, and happy that she no has a show where she can be herself and live the life that she wants to live.
she is unbelievably cute
The ABC stance brings to mind the quote from Hamlet: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in our philosophy.
It's amazing to think I was born in 1998 and this was how the world was like. Makes me so sad how hurt Ellen is in this interview.
Heather Holmes It doesn't seem that long ago I was 21 back in 1998.
Someday people are going to get it. We're getting there.
What a brave woman! This would have been at the start of or the middle of a hard part in her entertainment life. Look at her now! (She's the most important and influential female entertainer in 2018.)
I don't think the ABC executive could have looked more smug and self-righteous .. even if he tried!
rubbish..GAY STUFF SHOULD NOT BE PROMOTED
@@garyblackbourne120 and guns? should guns be promoted?
How come the Ellen and Anne on Oprah interview got blocked? I find it anywhere now in uk
I wish ellen could do another sitcom now :(
8:00 so what he's trying to say is that they cancelled the show because Ellen is gay and the public don't wanna see that on their TVs. Good. And then you wonder why so many people commit suicide because of bullying, when the guy that should choose to show homosexuality as something normal so as to help people to naturalize it chose instead to take the whole thing out of the air because it wouldn't sell.
Ellen Made Herstory. If it wasn't for her there would be no "Will & Grace" and Equal Marriage would never would have happened
People must have scoffed when she said she would get married when it's legal. Look at where we are now. ;)
It is amazing. She sees it. And knows it. How people are conditioned (brainwashed). Some people are given the sight to see it. And she does see it.
I love you Ellen
wow this is so otherworldly, its like watching some kind of parody mocumentory =P how often does this narrator/interviewer have to say "gaaay" ? it just becomes ridiculously funny xD "america's view of what is just to..gaaay?" xD omg and then that analysis of how many episodes mention "GAAY" subject matter, like this is some deep sirious inquiry into the subject XD
Love you, Ellen!
I love you, Ellen!
Siren Denied Yeah but ABC has dropped off so badly in the ratings over the years.
You mean ABC.
Being gay isn't a sexual tendency. I'm bi and when I have certain for someone if its towards another guy I don't just tend to feel a certain energy. Its not a bad habit that comes and goes its a unchangeable and is always there. Why dont people consider being straight a tendency?
She i so pissed off there. And i love the jokes she makes to the interviewer when she says stupid things. You go El
Whats pansexual?
You have to realize even though you were technically born in that era, you weren't raised in it. Those people were raised in a time where heterosexuality was the norm and the majority of people had very different ideas of what homosexuality was because no one knew anything about it. Most of the people were raised to believe that people chose to be gay and wanted to just have sex with everyone. They were raised to believe that homosexuality was an immoral way of life. However, now most people know that being gay is not a choice and gay people are just as normal as straight people, so the majority don't have a problem with it anymore. You need to be able to see someone else point of view or else you're probably just as closed-minded.
pansexuality is when you're attracted to someone regardless of their gender
BookieObsessed I was 19-20 when Ellen came out in 1997. 1995 I had just graduated high school, things were SO much different back then even in 1999 when I knew I was gay it was difficult to come out. I felt so bad for seeing her go through this on the last episode. Frankly I had no problem with it, because to me it seemed normal. If you are already LGBT you don't see a difference. The executives on ABC were atrocious at that time. Believe me the 1990's we're so much different than they are now.
are pan-sexuallity and bi-sexuallity the same? asking out of sheer ignorance
Ellen was a modern-day Lucille Ball. And America did not deserve her.
dude. ABC guy had the politically correct finesse that companies dream of. towed that line like a pro. then, like any egomaniac of his stature, the seconds of decency ran out and slime poured right through.
LOVE LOVE LOVE ELLEN!!
love the lighting...drama...HD fucked everything up
The abc guy is the Disney CEO Robert Iger. Odd I know.
too gay? TASTE THE RAINBOW
❤😮😊
I like the part were Ellen said people are OK with gays as long as gays are being made fun of.
How gay was the show? Jesus u wouldn't get away with a question like that now....times have changed at least alittle bit
Robert Iger is a sad excuse for a man.
I love ellen and her shows. what happened for me was, once she got to the fourth season and in a relationship, it wasn't funnny
i just keep thinking about all the times I saw Paul Reiser being a couple with Helen Hunt in Mad About You and the guy goes "but it wasn't about being heterosexual" right it was just about being in a relationship. just like ellen wasn't trying to make it about being homosexual just about being in a relationship!
Respect!!
There is something about american society that I can't get: It seems totally normal and acceptable, even for children, to display violent scenes, but when it comes to nudity and sex (not to mention gay sex) it is where the line is drawn. Why is it appropiate for a child or teenager to watch shootings and beatings and violence and it is totally unacceptable the glimpse of a naked human body? don't get it.
love ellen!
love the craig ferguson/drew carey sexual ambiguity, fifteen years later still at it!
ABC is not BBC,dears!!!
Ellen is beautiful!!!
It's nice watching this in 2013 with the benefit of hindsight. But at the time, this must have seemed so insurmountable...
