What Do You Find When You Deconstruct 10 Pairs of Cheap Snowboard Pants?

- If there's one thing I hate it's shitty ass gear being marketed towards the masses. It's this disdain that has led us in the current cultural zeitgeist of snowboarding that fly by night companies are popping up with inferior product and marketing it towards people that snowboard and sometimes even people that claim to be snowboarders. So what is a guy to do? Simple, I bought 10 pairs of pricepoint pants under $200USD and I tore them apart to see what's good and what isn't. This is a long video, you've been warned, but for those with a short attention span I will be dropping each pants video separately.

Thank you for taking the time and going through all of this. I can't imagine how much video hit the cutting room floor. It was good to see the "established" brands were solid enough, even on a budget. Can you do gloves/mitts next?
450gb's of raw footage. Maybe.
Would love to see a gloves and mitts video like this
@@AngrySnowboarder mitts video would be super interesting to see after watching this
+1
Buy kincos for a fraction of the price as bigger named brands and call it a day 🤟
Hay man, I really appreciate your time and money invested into this review. I like the consistency of test criteria and the attention to detail of major aspects of what a durable pair of pants should be. I like the point that you make that supporting good quality brads that have withstood the test of time and invest in snowboarding is where a conscientious customer should look first. Keep up those videos!
I bought a pair of 686 pants about 16 years ago. Want to say I paid around $35 on clearance (leftover from the previous year). Things still look new....warm AF...but noticed last season that I will have to reapply waterproofing....for the first time ever! Matter of fact....so impressed I bought their Smarty 3-in-1 jacket last year....again as a leftover, for dirt cheap. I will always be loyal to 686. Thank God they have the crotch/leg venting. Like I said...super warm, but are still cool enough to use with the vents open late season. BTW--the ones that I have look very much like their Smarty Cargo pants they are selling today.
I used to be loyal to 686 pants (still love their jackets and hoodies), at one point they changed their cut from baggy loose fit to slim. This drove me to Burton pants.
@@BimmerDudeXi Strange - I have a pair of reg pants and bibs from 686 and find them to be super loose down the leg, but I am a pretty slim guy. Such a solid brand.
Great video....for anyone who needs solid pants...Volcom Snow Chino... The are 15k/15k and $150 at full retail. They can often be found for under $100 during the off season.
Facts!
I have a Volcom jacket. Love it and its bullet proof
Avran, totally appreciate you taking the time to do this, because there are way too many people on the hill wearing Dope Snow gear. Have had the same pair of 686 Smarty 3 in 1 pants for the past two seasons, have never gotten wet, cold, and they show very little wear. Granted they probably only have about 75 days on them, but for $250 they've been a good purchase, especially since I can get them in a tall.model.
Dope/montec is a hit or miss. Pants, gloves and googles are trash. But I do have to say. Them base layers, and their jackets are one for the best I ever own. 3 season with 2 of them and they still holding like champs. And just recently had to reapply their DWR coating. Just like new.
@@eliterolo so you would recommend the jacket over the pants?
Yes absolutely. I own, the akin and the yeti. The akin is my favorite jacket. The yeti I use it for warmer days. Rainy days it gets damp a bit. But you won’t be wet. The akin is just a monster. Keeps you warm, doesn’t get damp. Just Greta overall. Pants are just not that good, rip easy, and no so warm.
@@eliterolo thanks for the info! i think i'm going to wait for summer sales in order to put my hands on a good deal, watching volcom gear rn.
Appreciate the time and effort.
My first pants were cheap, but that was to just test the sport.
Since then, definitely invested in better quality gear.
Dearest angry, thank you for taking the time and spending the cash flow on this video. Great info. The only TRUE and HONEST reviews on the inter webs. Thanks again
Had the 686 standard since 2019, still going strong, and I only paid £35 for them in a sale.
That’s a real deal!
I got some Columbia Titanium grade snowboard pants that are usually like 250 bucks for about 80 dollars at the columbia sportswear employee discount store hre in portland. they keep my legs so warm and dry and theyve lasted the last 3 years with 190 plus days of riding in mostly pnw winters
Have some too, Columbias are surpassingly stretchy and fit me well. No complaints wore them in cold BC and they did well.
Damn that’s eye opening. I literally just got my order from Montec today. They where the only ones with a style/color I liked. Gonna have to rethink it and return it probably. Thank you for this video.
I have a dope snow pants and montec jacket. They're fine for casual riding. I've worn them for many days, had plenty of tumbles and crashes. There's some wear on a knee and on the part of my coat where my board chafes when I'm carrying it. Overall I am not unhappy. I wouldn't trust them for weeks on end on a 4000 m high mountain, because the waterproofing is indeed odd. I've never been wet but the outer layer does soak like the anger man showed. High altitude, low temps, lots of wind plus soaked outer layer, I can guess what's going to happen. If you're a hardcore rider like anger man, then definitely invest in something better.
Ps: I bought and wear them for the same reason as you did despite owning Burton pants and a Volcom jacket.
You make the best content on the internet for snowboard gear/culture/reviews. The fucking snowboard influencers can't even compare.
I don't know about that.
Got my first pair of 686 gore tex pants last season...incredible piece of outerwear. Their stuff is so well designed.
I FUCKING love these videos. I remember the goggle video. I hope you continue stuff like this. Where would you say the VF Corp stuff (Northface/Vans) ranks with the DC, Columbia, and 686? I wear the Northface pants. I feel they have the best fit for me. Thank you.
Depends on the model but it's on par for the most part or better.
Great video! Save me from buying crap. What you think about North Face?
Thank you. Easy to see the amount of effort you put in.
Time flew by thanks to it being informative and unbiased.
always enjoy that you keep it real with all your content
Everywhere I go, I see the same Doooope.
Thanks for making this vid and vids like this.
You're doing the snow Lord's work, and we thank you! #SayNopeToDope...outerwear
Amazing video angry. I can't imagine how long this took you to make but thanks buddy
This video is 1 year old, and still some of the best (and only) objective pants review I could find. My pants started leaking at the butt, and it's way past poor people's "buying season" for all the things. I just need something to keep my butt dry until summer when I can have some clearance options that all the cool kids rejected throughout the season. A few bad economy sales are currently active, but all above cost target. I saw Hard Land on sale for $20 and decided to roll the dice, and I don't care if I look like a dork. Hopefully, I'll be a dork with a dry butt for 10-20 days. Video mentioned failure points in conclusion, but all of the tests looked like they were generally passed without issue?
Way to buy crap that won’t last, good job!
Great content. Especially like your emphasis on the construction techniques that make a durable pant. I’m sure as the 23-24 season approaches there will be the obligatory miracle proprietary fabric reviews- stretch, breathable, waterproof, etc. but if the construction is not there what’s the good?
I’m STILL using my top of the line Burton bibbs from the late 90’s. Still rockin (I do waterproof treatment the outside every season though)
surprised you didn't note that the dope snow pant while keeping you dry from outside moisture, it doesn't breath, so its like wearing a trash bag. you will become drenched in your own sweat. Breathability in your water proof layer is why people are so willing to pay top dollar for real gore-tex.
I think I was just more mortified at that giant sticker on the inside. But you are correct.
Hey Avran that party last night was off the hook! I think I left my pants...oh crap never mind.
Great vid, thanks for all the content and effort you put in!
Great video! Makes me really glad I bought a last year's model DC jacket for fifty bucks instead of some Amazon crap they were pushing.
Keep dropping knowledge. I bought a pair of chamonix pants for $100 a few years ago they lasted 5 days. After that I sucked it up and paid $350 for volcom goretex bibs I’ve put 100 days on them and are basically still brand new other than a few minor slam scrapes. I also still own DC pants and Quicksilver pants that I paid $100ish both have 50 plus days and are rideable still. Pay the money suck it up and youre ass will be dry and they might even last more than a season. Thanks for the content angry
Volcom gortex bib pant . That’s the way to go . I have a volcom gortex jacket as well. Great for those pow days .
Love Volcom so much, have the INF TDS goretex jacket and the rain goretex bib and they're absolutely bomb proof, always perform really well.
Good watch to see how this gear is built differently. Keep up the good work....and it looked like a lot of work. Appreciate the time you took to put this out.
I'm pretty excited for this one. I actually want to hear what the differences in materials and nuances in construction techniques are and how they matter.
bought a DC pants 3 years ago, still look brand new and truly happy with it
mountain hardware has always been my go to for outerwear and hasnt failed me yet
Highly informative video! I just got a pair of 686 Quantum Thermagraph pants on sale for $86. Retail on their website for ~$270. I’m hoping they were so cheap because of the color and timing, and not because they are cheap pants! I’m hoping to get multiple years out of them. Did I get got?
No you did good.
Ty for the vid mate.
Your thoughts? Good, bad?
@@RicMarBon I ride pretty small resort here in Sweden, and for that the pants and jacket works just fine. I'll just ridden with them like ten times, so this far I got no complaints.
Very informative, and much appreciated. Would have been interesting to see Ride in the test too. I owned a Georgetown jacket and a pair of Eastlake pants and they were both - surprisingly and dissapointingly - complete and utter garbage, especially the jacket.
Pretty funny, I have both the DC and the 686 pant. The 686 one fits me better so that's what I use the most. Guess I'm a price point buyer. I've had several 686 jackets and have never been disappointed.
Great content. Must have been fun to deconstruct and tear them apart. This will help in my decision to purchase new pants.
Did you ever sew your own gear? You exactly what to look for; much appreciated. I'll look at your links and the Amazon store for recommendations, but which brands would you say always keeps consistency in well-made clothing? It's quite frustrating having to break out the Brother to re-sew the crotch of these shitty Amazon Basics overalls.
Real snowboard brands not amazon essentials.
Yeah I had DC pants 20 years ago. Wore them till I tore holes in the knees, like 5-6 seasons.
Doing gods work! Thanks Av Dawg
I've got some quicksilvers that Travis wore in the art of flight, so old at this point, but I have to say, lame zippers, I had to restitch the zippers on the pockets several times from day 2. Can't fault them for functionality, comfort and waterproofing, amazing, but the fabric tears where your edges rub carrying the board hiking. Had to tape up tears a few times. Still going though! Replaced some lower end 686s where I ended up ripping open the crotch after a few seasons of abuse, which otherwise were great.
Thank you so much for doing this! Would LOVE to see one that pulls 686, DC, and other bigger names (IE Burton). If you do it again, I would appreciate seeing Volcom reviewed this way, too.
Literally pulled 686 and DC apart.
@@AngrySnowboarder Sorry for not being clear. I'm not saying do those again. Saying comparing those to the bigger brands would be cool to see. Maybe some common store brands, like REI, too. But to be fair, I'm not knowledgeable of where these are manufactured and parent companies, so a lot of snow pants might already fall under the same umbrella (like Dope and Montec).
I'm looking forward to starting my 4th season snowboarding! The only pants i wear on the mtn are the Goretex the USAF issued me in 1998. Still going strong. The only problem is no pockets. I have to wear a camelback backpack when it is too warm to wear a jacket.
Swing into the Army Surplus store I guarantee they have a new cargo version of what you have.
Spend money on stuff that won't fail. My 1st pants were a very common and respected surf brand. Quicksilver. They are in a land fill somewhere after 20 days. Fell apart. Bought Salomon ski pants. Great fit. About 150 days old now and still going strong despite showing signs of wear. They were double the price but will last 10 times longer. Don't buy cheap throw away crap. Invest.
Love it, especially with the crazy adds for montec I’ve been getting lately, was curious about the actual quality and this answers it.
Would love to see the other end of the spectrum, compare the high end arc’teryx, Norrøna, north face, ak, flylow, Patagonia? ;) you have and endless budget, right?
Like, subscribe, join angrysnowboarder.vip, buy a superchat, and maybe I can make that happen.
Lol. I got the first two…
I buy all volcom items, they fit me well and if you time it right you can get them super cheap, I've gotten their goretex jackets and pants for $200-250 usd.
So interesting vid, thanks for that bro. Despite all that for me ridding the Vancouver local 3 montains, where it ralely goes under -5, I only use a very large softsheel with internal fleece and they only cost CAD$30ish (these last good 2 temps taking a fucking beat from rails and jumps). It is so light that I feel better than using jeans to sk8 in summer and they only cost CAD$30ish.
Thank you for this vid man…i almost bought the dopes as i really liked the look but i have always had burton and have never had an issue with any of it and my last pants I’ve had for 15 years…only want a new pair cause i want a new pair not because they’ve worn out. I will donate them and someone else can have a great pair of pants for another 15 years lol
686 pants are absolutely rock solid.
I feel like people don't understand the value of buying off season gear. I bought $1800 in gear last month that in total retails for like $3000. summer sales and last season's gear is just as good
got my blunt ready.......... LETS ROLL!!!!!!🙃🚬🚬🚬🚬
Would love if you did a review on some of the trew gear stuff. Seems solid but not 100% convinced
Missed this one getting dropped last week. Very interesting!
“If you were more respectful and receptive you’d have more subscribers.” Fuck that, Angry Snowboarder delivers. Every. Time. Twat Waffles.
Failed sensitivity training and don't know what a safe space is.
"Fly by night"... Dope from Ridestore, est. 2006? I get it - they're overpriced for what they are. But I've had DC fall to pieces, ThirtyTwo boots the sole wasn't stuck on, and shit customer service from them too. At the same time I've got some Nevica pants which have lasted and lasted...
I get it you like shitty gear.
I have 4 sets of snow pants, all 3 to 5 seasons on them.
My Columbia($99) pants literally did the fuzzy fabric thing, they leak now, seams are sparating...but I really abused them.
They held up well for 5 years of riding.
Flylow Baker bibs($450) 5 years of climbing, riding, and working outside in them......bullit proof, no leaks.
But, they are waaaaay beyond entry level, and probly not good for comparison.
686 smarty pants($300ish)
2 seasons, good so far. No complaints.
Dakine($100) 3 seasons.
Ok, but only ok. Crap water proofing.
Use less pockets, why no zippers on pockets??? Just velco.....
Bought in a pinch, their ok.
In the end, but decent gear like you said.
Amazing work on this!
AWSOME vid! Diff but Deff wanna see more
Thanks!
Welcome!
I’ll admit I bought Montec at the start of last season (my first season). After 3 days my butt was wet. Bought DC and haven’t looked back!
No one likes a soggy bottom boy!
I'm buying pizza for this one 😃
Might want 2 it’s a long one.
😂🙌🙌
The biggest condemnation of the shit brands is the honesty of these reviews. Make a good product, get a good review - its that simple. They can't be bothered because they don't give a shit.
Great work, super informative.
Good looking out on the dope pants review
I wonder how long the dope pants will last after being washed a couple of times. That some wack waterproofing
I got a pair of Yuki Thread Blackcomb bib pants on sale, DWR was initially pretty good, but is gone after 1 wash...
Can you do a similar test on high-end pants like Oakley, Volcom, Burton, Harlaut apparel etc?
Why the fuck would I ride some skier shit like Harlaut that makes no sense. Also there's Volcom in this video.
Great video! That’s hilarious. Flaps with no pockets. Trash!
Homeschools bulletproof not sure if they even exist anymore but very tough
This video has been so hyped
SCIENCE! Thanks for doing this 🙏. Nice to know that pedigree means something still.
any thoughts on Burton outerwear? ive have fairly decent luck with them
You kind of pay for what you get with them. Their higher end stuff is pretty solid and the mid level will get the job done, but the lower end stuff it's so hit or miss. The big thing is to look at the tag and see the country of origin. Their stuff made in Vietnam and the Phillipines is pretty good.
my AK down jacket is amazing. I'm a mid level rad-dad (without the dad part) and just took off a 'huge' jump at key stone (area 51, far left). I hit the jump just enough to get unexpected area, missed the landing, slide down 70% of the backside on the jacket. I was sure I killed the jacket. But it was just like new.
The only good thing about summer is that I don’t get Dope adds on my instagram.
Somehow all the zippers were acceptably stong in your video. I must not know how to zip since I seem to ruin zippers all the time... and I purchase recognized brands.
What's your opinion on ThirtyTwo Outerwear? I have the Mullair Jacket which is 30k/30k, but sometimes when the snow is watery it gets really wet, but doesn't go through.
Their stuff is so hit or miss. They'll make something super awesome, but won't market it so it won't sell then poof it's gone. But at the same time some turd of a product will get super marketed and stick around even though it's not that good. Also they have some of the weirdest cuts on jackets and pants.
I want another long hot angry
You’re the guy that invented the glizzy straw aren’t you?
Any thoughts on Trew Gear? Good, bad, overpriced, reasonably priced?
They have a weird cut to it and the material is weird, but it was quality when I last checked it out.
taking "what pants are those?" to scientific levels
Was afraid I was going to regret my investment into 686 this season. But came out more confident.
And as expected dope and montec….
686 is great
Bought cheap pants at start, but weren't knockoffs, does that count?
some of the tests were low key snowboard gear asmr lol
Why did I buy a bunch of dope clothing when I was first getting into snowboarding. This made me regret everything. Damn their adds are too good
Good to show that you also don't have to break the bank to get a good pant like the 686 or DC. Had to interrupt a shop guy trying to sell a beginner a £300 pair of Gore-tex pants. Put a pair of Volcom in his hand at half the price a told him to have fun. Pissed off the shop guy but that approach is not helping snowboarding either.
There's no reason to upsell to someone at that level.
This is the same sort of shit I see when in shops. Customers come in and can’t even describe what type of riding they like or do and are so obviously at a beginner/low level intermediate and the staff go ahead and recommend the most expensive boards they carry and don’t ask any further questions to actually help the customer.
What is your personal favorit brand for pants and jackets?
L1 all day every day. Been riding it now for almost 2 decades, won't go back.
Several pairs of “cheap pants “ in here appear to be built better than the $250 northface bibs I bought that lasted 1 run before the seams blew out in the sides. The warranty replacement also lasted one run and blew out the crotch which was apparently only single stitched with a really weak gusset
Holy shit man, that's really bad. :O
Great video!!!
What happened with KB and Dope? Also, thanks
He took the money, contract ran out, he left.
Gotta fly the Aussie flag and stick up for Yuki Threads. The pants you reviewed were crap but they do make better gear than those. They are big supporters of our small local scene in OZ and have a great story behind them.
Oh I'm not upset with them for what they are, they were a fill in for another brand that screwed the pooch. But Fyve makes the exact same pant. It's an open design from Alibaba.
Ladies and gentlemen. The highly anticipated…..
We all ready KNEW (if youre a fan of avran) but lets REALLY GET UP IN THERE!!!😈😈😈
Dope fan boys in shambles
The question im asking myself is not “why does avran have 10 pairs of snowboard pants?” But rather “how wide are those pants?”.
Not wide enough. Very slim fit.
Thoughts on Volcom Pants?
Two thumbs way up.
Great and helpful video. Something to consider the next time might be to talk about size of the opening at the bottom. I got a surprise when I went to a double BOA boot (Maysis). All of a sudden it was a bit snug. Please expand on the process of a ski lift handjob. 😂😂
YES.
I always wanted a DOPE SNOW teardown.
Ever since I noticed all their marketing were the Moonchild Influencer girls, who ride the exact same tree line in Levi, Finland.
Their vids make me so irrationally angry, because you can tell those girls just learned to ride last week.
I'm glad you proved they suck, and I'm not just bitter.
Malcolm Moore wears Yuki. Swears by them. Interesting.
They must pay him well.
How would you rate Holden?
I wouldn't since all they make is high end hipster fashion now.
Are you selling any of these second hand?
You think after I cut the legs off and split the seams you can wear these still?
@@AngrySnowboarder Yes perfect for those warm spring days😎
Any info on the brand Rehall?
It looks like generic stuff to me. Some of the jackets almost look like they came out of the same factory as Dope.
@@AngrySnowboarderThanks. Never heard of them before just saw them on The-House
Can you say something about Billabong?
Something about Billabong.
@@AngrySnowboarder Oh nice one there haha, can you make a review of billabong's bibs or jacket?
@@ShiLe97 No. You didn't say please.
@@AngrySnowboarder Please!
Too late now.
DC makes some cool stuff, their Sympatex Operative Jacket (45k/30k) caught my eye, really like the design.
Too bad that they seem to not focus that much on their boards anymore, they have like 5 boards total, barely see information about them online, not even on their website.
That’s cause the boards sucked . Outerwear is decent though . Only board I ever snapped was a dc board in the first season . Won’t ever buy again
