Touching base with Ian over 10 years ago, asking about when the box set would come out & he wasn't sure, seems that Rod was being his usual dick self but it did get released thank goodness.
"Nod is A Good As A Wink" is one of my absolute favourite all-time albums. "Debris" is one of the best songs of the whole 1970's for me. I grew up in their era as hardcore glam rock man, but the Faces were always okay by me.
PETE/ your the best / I wish you the BEST. ! It’s weird/ today I waited for your episode / and I had a feeling something wasn’t right. I’m dead serious! Anyway / the best to you and your family !!!!
Best of luck Pete! I know all the people who watch these are pulling for you and your family. I always find that music pulls me through those thought times in life. Even when you think that nothing will ever pull you up out of that dark spot, there will be a song that comes on that gets you through. Keep your heads up! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'd love to see your reaction to the Small Faces' "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" when you hear Stanley Unwin telling the story of Happiness Stan on side 2. It's an amazing album.
Side one of Nod (leaving off Last Orders Please) is some of my favorite music. But no discussion of the Faces can be complete without mentioning "Never a Dull Moment". Rod saved his best songs for his solo career and this record is almost an analogue of Nod, only with much better songs. Never a Dull Moment is my desert island record. I don't really know how to describe it, but it's the friendliest record I've ever heard. Long live Ronnie Wood and Ronnie Lane! ( I know Ronnie Lane died a long time ago) If you really want to know how great the Faces were, search out "Five Guys Walk into a Bar" a four CD compilation of outakes, live versions and a bunch of other stuff. Great under rated band
Your exactly right. Stewart's early stuff and the Faces were all intertwined. Stewart would not have been anywhere near as popular as he is if it werent for them. Every picture and Never a dull moment might as well have been Faces albums.
Hopefully at some point the channel can rank the early Rod Stewart albums, maybe with A Night On The Town or Footloose and Fancy Free as a cut off. Possibly even a combined top ten of the Faces and early Rod Stewart?
Thank you for this ranking Pete. I've only heard a few of the Faces songs here and there but now I'll listen to the catalog. Hope everything goes well with your family. You're in our prayers!
I think The Faces are the band I’d most like to have seen. They’re not my favourite group by any means, but I just love the joyous sense of abandon that they gave off on stage. I always picture them leaning all over each other, usually with a glass of something unspeakable like Green Chartreuse or a Brandy Alexander in hand. Ronnie Wood was so much better in The Faces than in The Stones, he really contributed so much to them. But to me the real heart of the group was Ronnie Lane, a wonderful spirit and fine songwriter. As for Rod Stewart, he was (along with Paul Rodgers) the finest British singer of that era. Such an emotive voice and engaging presence. Love them.
I prefer the Small Faces with Steve because he was such an amazing singer, guitarist, performer, but the Faces are cool as well ! Don’t own. Surging by them though now that I look hmm Pete hope all goes well with the family situation be well and take care, good vibes to you and yours sir !!
I think my favourite song of theirs is “Pool Hall Richard” one of the best rock songs of all time. Too bad it’s not on any album so thats why compilation is needed. Sending positive vibes and thoughts to your family at this time
All the best Pete to you and your family at this difficult time. Hope everything works out for the best 🙏 Obviously not of great importance at this time but yes I definitely recommend you check out more of the Small Faces, some absolute killer deep cuts to be found on their albums. Sort of a cross between the Kinks and early Who is how I’d best describe them.
The Faces had two great singers Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane and those two were also great songwriters back then. Hard to tell people who first heard Rod Steward in the later crooner years how great a rock singer he was on his first 6 (or7) solo albums. They were almost Faces albums as well as they had all the other guys on them + people like Keith Emerson, Elton John and and, Steamhammer members etc. I add the Small Faces because they just fit for me, their best being ranked anyway after the #4 Faces album. 1. A Nod is as Good as a Wink 2. Ooh La La 3. Long Player 4. First Step _______________________ 5. There Are But Four Small Faces 6. The Autumn Stone (released after the breakup but considered a regular album, not a compilation) 7. Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (an early example - 1968 - of a concept album) 8. Small Faces (UK Immediate label debut album 1966) 9. Playmates (This one and the next were by a 1977 reunion of the original members but without Ronnie Lane who began to suffer from multiple sclerosis at that time already) 10. 78 In the Shade PS - For those who like the Ronnie Lane songs on the Faces and Small Faces albums it is worth to check out his solo albums, more acoustic folk country style songs but beautiful gems there, also his collaboration albums with Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton are worth a listen.
Add to my previous list: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Cream, Eric Clapton, Hawkwind, Iron Butterfly, James Gang, Joe Walsh, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Marshall Tucker, Poco, Move, Nice, Procol Harum and Spock's Beard
I'm very sorry to hear about your family emergency Pete. Family always comes first! I will certainly keep you guys in my prayers and thoughts. Don't worry about putting out videos, just do what your family needs you to do!
I know I seem new to the channel but I really appreciate you and all you do ! I‘ve been tuning in for a while. Prayers to you and your family and to all the healthcare folks serving your family. Hang in there ! My buddy ... who has since passed away way too soon, turned me onto the Faces after we got out of Collage in 1987. Everytime I hear the Faces I think of Seth. Thanks for this video ... Love Faces and Rod !
Love The Small Faces and Faces!! Miss Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane. Praying for your family member!! Take the time you need. You have set a prolific rate. Cheers Pete!! God Bless!
Take whatever time you need for your family, the content can wait. Might have to listen to the Faces a bit more. I am also starting to like Rod Stewart and Billy Joel a lot more than I used to, if you are in a position to do a show on either of them when your time permits I would jump for joy!
Not a lot of separation here quality wise, all strong efforts. Ooh la la is actually my favorite. And yes, the small faces have some awesome stuff in their catalog, Marriott was one of the best singers in rock history, very underrated. Thoughts and prayers to you and yours pete!
fuck yeah!!! amazing, visionary, ass-kicking, ROCK and ROLL. grew up on it, will never not love the Faces. all positive thoughts to you and your family Pete, family always comes first.
Thoughts and prayers for your family Pete. Funny you said what you did about greatest hits cds. Me and my buddy Dave each had about 3 greatest hits comps of Doors until we realized they only had 6 albums w Morrisson. We ended up getting rid of them and getting the albums proper. By the way Small Faces Odgen's Nut Gone Flake - Psychedelic masterpiece!
Loved this review of The Faces! Back when The Stones sang about the party, The Faces were the party! Don't know if you've done this already, but I'd love to see your rankings of albums by The Small Faces!
I love Faces. I've always preferred them to Zeppelin. I love the simplicity, the bluesy and boozy (as you call it) sound. They're just fun, which to me is what rock should be about.
all the best to you pete and your family. Family first of course we don't expect you to load content when your dealing with this. Personally I have to catch up to all of your past content (new subscriber) and your Marvel comic channel content!
All the best Pete, as others say family comes first. Just like to add the fact that there were a couple of amazing singles released ( if memory serves) between Nod and Oo La La, namely 'Pool Hall Richard' and 'You Can Make Me Dance Sing ... ' so maybe a best of collection not such a bad thing!
love the Faces.. how you can play so sloppily perfect is amazing..funny thing is when you listen to the Rod Stewart albums prior to 75 Atlantic Crossing from the Mercury days you'll take a listen carefully and it's pretty much almost all the faces appear on the album still which is pretty neat.. I'm still amazed by flying to this day just such a great song. hope everything goes ok 🙌 do what you have to do look how good you've been to everybody else and all these years how long you've kept the sot going.. without you it would be kaput..haters are going to hate they want a bitch and moan too bad let 'em wait till they get their first fucking family emergency and deal with it when they have things to juggle and have to decide how do I go about doing this... got to keep the priorities in order..
Great review, albums many have never listened to or owned, same with me I heard the hits :& then went backwards getting each album, Rod in the 70's was nailing it, I rather like the live bootlegs I have of them over the albums, covering the Temptations/ Wings etc.... Had me a real good time.
All the best to you and your family Pete. I was going to post my thoughts on the Faces but it seems like everyone gets it ! A much loved band. I would just add though that Rod didn't really leave the Faces and Ronnie Lane was the first to jump ship when Rod's solo career began to eclipse the Faces. He'd seen Marriott walk out on them and didn't want to hang around for Rod to do the same thing. But Rod never really did...
Sorry to hear of your family health problems will pray. You do great reviews. Hope you do the band that the person who Rod Stewart replaced went to form soon.
Definitely tough to rank these because like you said they're all really great but I'm gonna go 1. Ooh La La 2. A Nod Is as Good as a Wink... 3. First Step 4. Long Player Those top two are really competitive for me though. Not a bad song on any of these records for my taste, but most of my favorites are from those last two records they put out. And even though "Long Player" made the bottom of my list I'd still say it's great and doesn't have any bad tracks. Just not quite as memorable for me as the others to me. Glad you mentioned their song "Flying," that's a nice tune. I really like John Baldry's cover of it from his '71 record.
Hard to argue with the rankings because, as you say, all Faces albums are consistently good (my own favorite is "Ooh Lah Lah" but you can't go wrong with any of them). Among Rod's solo stuff, I wonder if I'm the only person who likes "Smiler?" Critics killed it when it was released and it's not his most even effort, to be honest, but his old Faces bandmates were on it, "Sweet Little Rock 'n' Roller" and "Farewell" are both standout tracks and his duet with Elton John on "Let Me Be Your Car" is more than passable. Hope everything's okay with your family, Pete. Prayers and positive vibrations coming your way from the Philippines.
I like all four of these albums; there isn't a "bad one". But here's my list: 4) First Step (This is just way too long. It could have used an editor!) 3) Ooh La La (They were pretty much done at this point, as Rod was more focused on his solo career.) 2) Long Player (Very solid. "Around The Plynth" is maybe my favprite song of theirs.) 1) A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... to a Blind Horse (One of the best party records of all time) Thanks, Pete!
Gotta mention Ronnie Lane's DEBRIS off 'NOD...' (covered so well by Billy Bragg) and also Rod Stewart's tribute to Lane with his cover of 'Ooh La La' . Actually, I'd like to see your rankings on both Bragg and Stewart - have you done them and I can't find them?
I'm praying for you and your family. "Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your requests known to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Phil 4:6-7
I have found memories of this bands discography. Sure they were loose and sloppy but that was their charm.A good time band that were the perfect backing band for Rod Stewart My favourite album is also A Nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse ( great title ), even Ronnie Lane's tracks are quite strong in their own right and add a flavour to the album without dropping the quality at all
for a minute they not the stones were the "greatest rock n roll band in the world , and i guarantee they were MUCH better live. i saw them LIVE in philly in the mid 70's after ronnie lane had left. the bass player was testu yamauchi , and they SMOKED live. the place was going crazy and was way oversold as it was not the usual large venue in philly at the time. lynyrd skynrd was scheduled to open and i am kinda glad they didn't cause i think the crowd would have EXPLODED and there may have been a riot. duke williams and the extremes opened who were a regional big rock and blues act. i am just glad i am old enough to say i got to see faces live. they KILLED it for sure.
The 4 CD box set "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" (2004) is missing from itunes website & out of print. There are unreleased songs & demos from the Warner Bros. vault!!
All the best to you and yours.....keep the faith bro. To me Faces were the best bar band ever! Just the best; blood and guts. Rod Stewart, Kenny Jones, McClaggan, Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Lane. Are you kidding me? Great great band.
Hello Pete what do you think about "proggy" jam bands like Umphreys McGee or oldskool ones like Quicksilver Messenger Service or the Grateful Dead? Also would be cool to see a video on other early psychedelic bands like 13th Floor Elevators if you can get around to it.
Best wishes to your family Pete . Prayers sent
FACES were amazing. One of the best bands ever (whatever that can ever mean). Thanks a lot, great video and CHEERS TO THE FACES
Ronnie Lane was such a great songwriter and bassist. I wish more Americans knew how great he was.
This one does.

@@FuturePast2019 The best song Ronnie and the Faces ever wrote.
I'm sorry that you are going through the family emergency. I hope that everything goes good and they get well. I will pray for you and your family.
The box set ‘five guys walk into a bar’ may be the best way to experience them. Amazingly curated.
Touching base with Ian over 10 years ago, asking about when the box set would come out & he wasn't sure, seems that Rod was being his usual dick self but it did get released thank goodness.
Pete, ya gotta breakdown and buy the box set. Best box ever compiled....and prayers to you and family and friends.
"Nod is A Good As A Wink" is one of my absolute favourite all-time albums. "Debris" is one of the best songs of the whole 1970's for me.
I grew up in their era as hardcore glam rock man, but the Faces were always okay by me.
The Faces invented "Swagger". One of the coolest bands ever!
One of the greatest pure rock n roll bands ever, surely challenging the Stones. How can they be not more widely known??

Those early Stewart albums were more or less Faces albums, so if you think about it, a lot of quality stuff in those few years together.
You're right and those early Rod albums were arguably even stronger than the Faces releases.
Agree.
Your exactly right. Stewart's early stuff and the Faces were all intertwined. Stewart would not have been anywhere near as popular as he is if it werent for them. Every picture and Never a dull moment might as well have been Faces albums.

Was lucky enough to see The Faces at the Boston Garden in '75. The opener was Peter Frampton.
Holy shit. That must have been epic.
Thank you for this ranking Pete. I've only heard a few of the Faces songs here and there but now I'll listen to the catalog. Hope everything goes well with your family. You're in our prayers!

Edit after watching to the end...keep the faith Pete👍

Definitely tough to rank these because like you said they're all really great but I'm gonna go
