    I think a lot of newer Star Wars is ruined by galaxy shattering stakes. anytime something happens that’s why I love this game and hopefully the sequel the stakes are just high enough to make you feel like what you are doing is important, but just low enough to where things stop making sense.

    Basically when people who love Star Wars get to make what they want, it works better than when Disney decides what it wants to see and gets someone to build to that idea.

  • @enlightshadow4852
    @enlightshadow4852 Год назад +7

    Fantastic video, and if you don't mind, I also want to share my thoughts on Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars in general.
    When Disney first bought out Star Wars, one thing we can gleam from them is they tried to distance themselves from George Lucas as FAST as possible. The prequels - at the time - were deemed terrible movies with few redeeming qualities (to which I can write an entire essay in disagreement on, though I won't here for the sake of my mental health and not have everyone else read an even longer comment from a guy who is dumb as hell) and so this made some amount of sense. Disney parting with money and retaining a huge franchise in the process was a slam dunk. Not only does Disney have the budget to do whatever is necessary to make Star Wars a cash cow for them, but they have had talented writers, directors, and actors under their belts for years. Their first mistake was still trying to separate so far from anything George Lucas made, including The Clone Wars tv series. While starting off slow, TCW had gained a consistently large audience during seasons 3-5. While Disney allowed for the few remaining finished episodes of S6 to release on Netflix, they quickly turned the production team towards a new IP. Star Wars: Rebels. This turned into a mistake on top of a mistake (please hold, I have a point with this).
    The first season of Rebels does its absolute damned best to appeal to children. ANY death occurs offscreen, implied death was barely implied in some cases, and the Ghost crew basically refused any semblance of death whatsoever. Very clearly and very quickly, I believe Disney realized this wasn't working. S1 of Rebels had massive drops in viewer retention, despite having okay characters to start with. By diving headfirst into marketing to children, Disney seemed to refuse the idea that The Clone Wars had grown with its audience and now performed a soft-reset of its own audience by removing TCW from the broader world and focusing hard to market to kids. With Rebels' first season, Disney alienated the TCW audience, alienated the prequel trilogy audience, AND alienated the original trilogy audience all at once.
    This initial failure (which later turned successful, as Rebels did grow into a more interesting and better-written show in the later seasons) didn't really seem to make Disney think twice about future content. Almost immediately after the buyout, they willingly gave EA exclusive rights to Star Wars game development after just throwing away their entire gaming department. We went from a decade-and-a-half of decent and really awesome Star Wars titles (Battlefront II and Knights of the Old Republic to name the more famous ones at least, with the Revenge of the Sith tie-in game being surprisingly good) to a new decade with... 3 games. That's... it? Nothing else? And two of those games launched in states barely considered playable, with EA Battlefront II being a worse offender over the content-lacking EA Battlefront. Almost immediately, Disney made huge blunders with a franchise like Star Wars, their newest flagship, and it felt they weren't even batting an eye.
    2015 rolls around and we finally see The Force Awakens, and its... okay. It definitely oversteps its bounds in terms of creativity in a universe that is already established, Rey was considerably too powerful already with no reason to be so. She learns of the force and then immediately uses a technique we only see a Jedi Knight/Jedi Master do (which was Mind Trick). Rey then proceeds to basically duel an experienced user of the dark side and just demolishes him. While later on, we do get the Force Dyad explanation, that response feels very cheap and out-of-the-blue. And while the prequel trilogy was definitely despised at first, that trilogy of movies took love and care from George Lucas. He thought about his universe that he created with the original trilogy, pulled it back and said "What happened before Luke and Vader fought? Before the Rebels?" While the trilogy definitely could've used some more input from outside sources to make more sense on their own, or maybe fluff up and smooth the dialogue a bit, the audience can tell that Lucas still cared for his universe. Whereas Disney basically hired two narcissists to create Star Wars movies, creating 3 moves with the only connection to the other two trilogies being a couple big named characters, and barely connecting its own movies together with new characters and a plot that goes in completely different directions with each film.
    We've clearly seen that Disney has no introspective nature. They refuse to admit wrongdoing of such a huge franchise, hiding behind BS excuses and explanations that - to the core audience - mean little to nothing.
    And in this entire tornado of shit, we get... Jedi: Fallen Order. It's own self-contained, small story. The theory behind this game's greenlight to be produced was likely due to EA bleeding money after the Battlefront II fiasco that literally caused governments to get involved and Disney to step in. So we finally got a single-player story, where we play as a Jedi who survived Order 66, with gameplay seemingly inspired by Dark Souls, The Force Unleashed, and other 3rd person action based titles with parry systems, the combat and gameplay of Fallen Order really took off as a favorite. I know a lot of people were mad that Jedi: Fallen Order was "Just another game where you play as a Jedi" but I think this was the right move. Being able to play as one of the most recognizable factions in all of fiction history allows for a wide audience to get together and play without having much difference in terms of experience. This was also the first Star Wars game where the main character was a Jedi since The Force Unleashed II, and to anyone who played that game, it was a good gameplay experience but the story was short and barely worked from its predecessor. With a combat system completely unique in the Star Wars universe, Jedi: Fallen Order does its best to stand out and look really good. Even on PS4, with how fast the game loads, it even graphically looks impressive.

    • @enlightshadow4852
      @enlightshadow4852 Год назад +4

      (2/2)
      Most of your video talks about how the story is easily self-contained. It is a story in a universe that doesn't really seem to care about Cal's story. The larger players who do make an appearance treat Cal like another rat (namely: Darth Vader), even though we spent the whole entire game practicing and learning the gameplay and reaching the final duel with Trilla. We - as the players - feel immensely more powerful when we get to the end of the game, only to get our hopes dashed away by a man with an asthma problem and a helmet design mimicking a samurai when he can barely move his arms in swift motion. Vader is very much a power-player, and we - as Cal - are nothing. As you've said, this helps keep Cal's story rather contained, pushing him away from the main characters later on and just being a thorn in the Empire's side.
      Jedi: Fallen Order is probably one of the most unique Star Wars games and I would argue sits on a pedestal with the likes of Pandemic's Battlefront II, Knights of the Old Republic, and Republic Commando. The story doesn't even try to really grab a child's attention unlike the nonsensical movies and Rebels initially tried to do. Not saying a child can't play Fallen Order, but it is likely more appreciated by people who enjoy a decent story about a character who basically has Survivors Guilt and maybe some PTSD and other mental issues necessary to overcome by the end.
      I think what is happening right now is that Disney is trying to figure out why their movies are so divisive and taking steps to encourage many parts of the audience to return. The Mandalorian took a more serious turn as a Western at first. Disney finally greenlit the production of 3 arcs to finish the Clone Wars (which while I don't think was enough to really hammer home the show, was definitely good). Bad Batch is probably one of the better products they put out and while it has flaws, definitely feels the closest to Star Wars we've gotten since the mid 2000's in terms of shows/movies.
      What Disney has forgotten that Respawn was able to capture is that Star Wars is meant for families. There's action for the kids and a decently serious plot beneath that action that adults can strive to understand on levels fundamentally deeper than the surface that Star Wars provides. By starting off marketing so heavily to children in the beginning, they alienated so much of the audience. Then alienated more when they began to pander to politics, rather than having real life politics sit beneath the surface and not take such a huge chunk of story up (I say this because George Lucas' movies do have political inspirations and political messaging, but they aren't as pushing as "Oh well the Empire is cruel to animals so we have to defeat them" like TLJ did. There's a clear difference between a political inspiration/message and just blatantly telling your audience that you're a bunch of bitches who don't understand that something as simple as animal cruelty is bad, it's pandering and poor writing at best). The action in Fallen Order hits that feeling of child-like immaturity. You can't play the game without fucking with some of the stormtroopers. Grab one, hold him a while, then just toss him off a ledge. But the characters hit that rhythm just right of development, allowing for a more mature story to be told, without breaking the universe surrounding it.
      I can go on and on about how Disney has mishandled, damn near destroyed, and completely screwed up its money-printing machine. Star Wars has potential when the right hands are behind it. Dave Filoni isn't perfect but it is clear he - like Lucas - wants to create a universe and expand Star Wars so that everyone loves it. The old, the young, and the people who need an escape from their daily lives... Filoni isn't perfect, he's definitely got some plot holes in the works he's created, but Lucas did the same. We know now that JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson like to piss all over each others work, rather than create clean-cut and more precise stories. And while I personally would hope that the sequel trilogy is de-canonized and we get a new trilogy where Rey, Finn, and the cast actually get treated like real characters and people, I know that won't happen.
      Either way, I'm hoping Jedi: Survivor is as good as it looks. Rumor has it that Survivor has the exploration, customization, and design the Respawn team really wanted to go for during their first run with Fallen Order, with some upgrades from original ideas too. So maybe the file size will be worth it :)
      In conclusion... Why the fuck did you read my autistic ramblings so far into this comment? Tf is wrong with you? Do you enjoy self-harm? Go get an ice cream or something for reading this when it likely wasn't worth your time nor effort to read an essay of this length that barely resembles the conciseness an essay should have. Anyways... Enjoy your day!

    Ironically, it's JFO's simplicity that makes is good. I think destroying the holocron was a thematically good choice. Giving up their dream of restoring the Order to potentially protect the kids. And as you put it, it kept a good consistent pace and stayed true to the already existing lore. Also, you mention that JFO doesn't act like the center of the galaxy, while stories like sequels or CW do get really intrusive with how much they twist and explain things that don't need revision. I am so grateful they remembered the jedi's true nature. I don't think I have to explain why not being all knowing doesn't imply corruption.

    • @Mattatar
      @Mattatar Год назад +4

      @@Fizhy That's completely fair. The show is kind of structured in 3-4 episode blocks. I can see how someone could want to tune out right before they reach the conclusion of a particular arc because they find it hasn't reached its climax quickly enough. Sticking with it though, in my opinion, is completely worth it. When I first watched Andor, I stopped after Episode 4 because I wasn't that interested in any of the new characters or the heist mission. It was only after rewatching recently, each episode basically back-to-back, that I appreciated it much more. Treating it as one big film instead of several episodes is a vastly better way of watching it.
      Also, if you did stop about in the middle of the season, you were on the cusp of the best arc in the show! I hope you give it another try. The bar for Disney Star Wars has been set tremendously low, but Andor still blows anything Disney Star-Wars live action out of the water.

    The thing about Disney's attempt at creating anything Star Wars related is that, they just throw everything at the wall to see if anything sticks, original or unoriginal.
    Which is why to me, the franchise has become too oversaturated, with these mini spin-offs and smaller episodic series. And based on the reviews, there are not too enticing of a series to get me to watch either.
    I agree on the fact that the Disney-lead trilogy really, really lack a consistency for the direction of the story. But for what it was worth, at least it was nice to see the visuals get amped up to great extend of modern-day cinematic-ness, that the original trilogy simply didn't have technological capabilities to do so. Hell, I was pretty much burned out after The Last Jedi that by the time The Rise of Skywalker released, so I didn't even went to the theater to watch it on release, and to this day I haven't got enough interest to actually sit down and watch it.
    It's just sit there, as a footnote in my mind that The Rise of Skywalker released and exists, but I'm not interested to watch it unless I'm forced to.
    And because of my prior experience with the mainline Disney films, there's even less incentive for me to get a Disney+ subscription just to watch those extra mini-series. As I am myself too hardly ever actually paid for subscription services, because I prefer to do thing with as little paying as possible, whether through a some streaming services without paying, or some would call the "pirated" way.
    People loved George Lucas' writing and direction because it's consistent, creative but still respected the world building elements. There are some inherit problem to the originals but it's mostly a fine ride; But when Disney do it, it's more of a ignorant child, (ignorant of the world building), trying to toy with stuff they don't know how to properly dealt with.
    Oversaturation, lack of consistency (of quality and plot), and the lack of know-how (to properly, and carefully build a story around a franchise) is the Disney way. Intentional or not, that's how I see it.
    Coming from E.A., I doubt the top-level executives expected the success of Fallen Order, in fact, they probably even tried to actively prevent it in the development. But it's a sure welcoming addition in the sea of oversaturated everythings that Disney produced over the years. Can't be more excited to see the ever-more-expanded continuation of the journey in Jedi Survivor.

    Dude branching into different genres is one the best things that's ever happened to Star Wars. I can't believe you prefer it "family friendly".😂 It can be more than one Tone. It'd get boring otherwise.
    Malikos literally explains his endgame directly to Cal.
    Cal couldn't take on Vader because he was still extremely undertrained, not for that meta bullshit you mentioned. He just wasn't strong enough *yet.* That doesn't mean he won't one day be so.
    Some of your takes are so odd sometimes.

    • @Fizhy
      @Fizhy  Год назад +1

      First and foremost, thank you for watching. Malicos explains his objective, not necessarily how he’d accomplish it, why and what for, nor does he mention how that would factor the galaxy therefore what he actually wants is unclear. I’m not arguing he hasn’t got a ways to go but Cal just simply won’t take on Vader in a meaningful way, that’s not his fight and the original trilogy is Vader’s story. If Cal does come up against Vader ever again it’s unlikely he’d defeat him as that would undermine Vader as a more significant character for Star Wars. As for the broader universe, branching out in genre isn’t the worst thing going, I personally find the lighthearted tone with more sincere themes works best for Star Wars but on the front of genre specifically it’d be better if the universe could at least make sense without having to flip between one type of show and another, the spin-offs would be so much more effective if they weren’t just 9 times out of 10 present to contextualise something it isn’t tonally consistent with.
      Hope that clears it up a bit.

    You know, when it comes to a Star Wars, I think the biggest problem is has is the lack of anything unique or original. What I mean is that instead of them trying new concepts to add to Star Wars, they instead regurgitate the same stuff over and over again. It’s not like having familiarity is a bad thing but most of the stuff they’re producing are stuff we already know about (they weren’t even subtle with the Ahsoka show) while new and interesting stuff is given less attention such as Andor (which I loved) which suffered from a lack of marketing. That’s at least what I think

    You had me until you hated on Andor (I loved it and Rogue One) hehe but I agree with the other stuff. Loved Clone Wars especially and Rise Of Skywalker is a bloody ridiculous mess (which I found entertaining bc of how silly it is, partially thanks to Palpatine chewing the scenery so damn hard).
    As for Fallen Order itself, great game but I found the story to be kinda annoying but that is bc I hate the tying of morality to emotions and how binary that is. You made a lot of good points tho. Tired of every story having to be WORLD SHATTERING or "important". Just tell a story that fits into the established world. Galaxy is so big, a lot can happen without it having to have any impact (or risk ruining) other events. For video games in particular, it can nice just to exist in that world (hel look at both KOTORs. Not relevent to anything else and you just get to be in that galaxy for a while.)

      Think Jedi Survivor is 155gb on PC but a much more reasonable file size on console, for all we know it could be an error. As for Andor, I’m only going off what I’ve seen of it which was the first 7 or 8 episodes, take it as anecdotal rather than a genuine critique as it’s just a throwaway impression of mine thus far.

      I just enjoyed that it actually felt like it was about something (and not some spectacle fan-service jerk off session). That something ofc being rebellion and why normal people actually disliked the empire.
      Weirdly I find game file sizes change when you actually start downloading. Like on PS5 it usually seems to be half what's listed. I don't get it.

    I can understand the frustration relating to how many jedi survived order 66 - but there were around 10,000 Jedi pre-order 66. Order 66 had a 99% success rate. That left less than a *thousand* alive. We've probably had stories relating to ~25 survivors. I don't think that well will ever dry up, and i'm looking forward to more lol.

    26:00 I'm pretty sure that there were around 10,000 Jedi during the Clone Wars (I think the number was stated near the start of it), so 100 - 200 isn't "too many" in my opinion...
    Also for a comparison, around 200 initially survived Order 66 - which is less than the number of Jedi that went to the arena on Geonosis as a comparison of size - and up until the Original Trilogy, one of Palpatine's focuses was sending Vader and other Imperial force users after any left over Jedi. Given the size of the Galaxy and the Empire: 200 beings are nothing, especially with how scattered the Jedi were and how most that survived until the Originals like Yoda were so hidden that they'd have little to no methods of knowing about wider galactic events (although there are awkward Legends survivors such as a load from places like the Galaxies MMO and others who were mentioned to be part of the Rebellion but didn't bother to train Luke for some reason).

    • @Fizhy

How Maul escaped from Palpatine after the end of season 5 and rose back into power on Mandalore by the end of the show (Son of Dathomir), how Boba Fett overtook Cad Bane as the top-dog bounty hunter of the galaxy (Boba vs Cad Bane), what became of Ventress and her ultimate fate (Dark Disciple), and (this is just an educated guess since we don’t have that many specific details on this arc) Echos reaction to Fives’ death and how he learns to accept the Bad Batch as his new family despite him technically still being a reg and as such a bit of a black sheep of the group (Bad Batch on Kashyyyk), including various bits and pieces from other arcs such as Anakins growing anger and his resentment towards the Jedi especially after Ahsoka was expelled from the order (Crystal Crisis), all of these which would’ve paved the way towards the series finale and leading into Revenge of the Sith with a lot less loose ends than how the show is now
