The FQ400 is 51,000 in the uk and the gt-r is 58,000 fairly similar. With an FP Red setup and tune, you could get FQ-400 performance/speed/quickness for ALOT, and I mean ALOT less.
I understand your points. I feel the fq400 is way overpriced for the performance. When given the option I would take a GTR over the fq400 for that small of a price difference. But, I feel the best deal would be to buy a stock Evo (or a car of similar price and performance) and tune it. Seems to be a lot cheaper and you get more performance.
reasons continued: They are both Japanese, they both are front engine, they both have 4wd, they are both turbocharged, they both have computerized active differentials, and both have an automated manual twin clutch gearbox (although the Evo also has a 5-speed as well). With a few modifications, as seen in this video and the Edmunds GTR vs project Evo video, the Evo can contend with the GTR aka Godzilla.
@supervegeta3 I agree with you man. it really is a marvel how Mitusbishi squeezed so much power from a 2.0L engine! Would like to see sum twin turbos on that Evo and a bigger displacement and see how it flies! In the end though, i'd still take the GTR. I love the heritage of the Skyline and not just its awesome power!
for the $ id rather the evo. The thought of spending a 100K on a car that only beat the evo (65K) by a lil bit....Id go for the Evo. I have an MR model and I think it is pretty sweet.
Cool test, I think everyone knew what the results would have been before watching though... What they dont mention is that the Evo needs servicing every 4,000 miles due to the highly stressed 2 litre engine, whilst 3.7 litre GTR engine hardly needs servicing at all!
To be honest, I don't think I could chose! they're both amazing car with amazing potential! I don't ever want to have to chose between both, I'll cry!!!
There's just one problem with the Evo FQ-400 - it's a major GAS GUZZLER. When it was reviewied in Top Gear, Clarkson said it does 4mpg. Ouch (hence Clarkson recommended the lower versions like the 320 for the average buyer). The GTR on the other hand can do 16mpg city and 21 mpg highway.
How about at Targa Tasmania 2009 - where the Evo 9 finished 3rd (search for Targa Tasmania 2009 pt7 and pt8 ) behind the Lambourghini Gallardo Superleggera (2nd) and the Nissan GT-R (overall winner)?
@TrevTec8o8 I can put this question to you in another way. When you see a supercar beat a 4 door saloon would you be surprised? When its the other way around i guess you will be surprised especially a 2 litre engine pumping out 400-800 bhp on the road. Heck the AMS evo is all it takes to do the job for the GTR
Also, the Evo would be far less practical for everyday road use than a GT-R. Last I heard the Evo 8 FQ-400 only does 4MPG at best and requires a special Shell fuel blend (which of course would be more expensive than consumer unleaded fuel). The GT-R can go as much as 20MPG and can run on common unleaded fuel.
@MK1DubStepper The GTR can be used as a everyday car if you 1. have no kids. 2. have kids, but they dont have legs. 3. have no friends. 4 do your shopping online. The Evo is far more practical. I should know Ive got one. Saying that, I am shipping it in for a GTR shortly and buying a second car for the kids
Different price range yes, but it shows you that an Evo with around 400 hp is almost as good as a GTR. AMS performance will boost a sock Evo to 400 hp for less than $3500. That's a total of around $38,000 for an Evo that can contend with an $85,000 GTR. I would call that a win.
@185kschott Let's not get carried away, this comparison is between an FQ-400 and a GTR, the FQ400 being 8k cheaper than the GTR is far from a bargain... As much as i love the EVO. Would you rather drive a 4 door modified Lancer or a GTR(Godzilla)? Im pretty sure even if money is an object, 8k pounds warrants the extra cost. The new GTR does 0-60 in 2.8 sec, runs high 10s in the quarter mile and handles a lot better than the previous one. Thats almost the same as an AMS 900 evo, bone stock.
A base 370z is just as quick as the Nismo, the extra 18 odd ponies doesn't help with the added weight. For 7 grand you can get a GTM twin turbo kit, that'll be making 500+ rwhp. (Another 5 k for cams, tuning and bolt-ons) And pulling 1.01g on the skid pad on stock suspension and rubber is impressive /watch?v=t1pLw0fI1sY Here is a 350z running 8s, I dont know if you've ever been to the dragstrip but the difference between runing 8s and 10s puts it in another league when compared to an ams evo.
To me the gtr is like an awd muscle car and the EVO is an awd tunner and most muscle cars can beat a 9sec gtr but most evos win in the tunner world. The grip test was the most impressive part for both cars and 1.69 to 1.61 is barley a noticeable difference to the point it will depend on the driver thats how close the numbers are all in all I'd rather have the EVO
sir snow Most muscle cars can beat a 9 sec gtr? I love both cars and have been evo fan since before most knew about them on playstations even. But i'm curious what you meant about muscle cars beating these. They pretty much beat everything on the street and especially from a stop. But yea i know what you mean about tuner car and your right. Can make 400-1300 horsepower with these cars without much money and work. Both are insanely amazing and always have been. I'm waiting for toyota supra and the nsx to come along and give all these beefed up muscle cars a run for there money.
charleysturbos word I'm waiting to see someone tune a toyota ft1 and the tubros on the gtr is what makes it great in a quarter mile but for newer muscle cars tune a mustang coyote or corvette and the old muscle cars are beast I seen a few bel airs beat a gtr. I'm from jersey so I've only seen it on the drag strip great car though especially the 2015 0-60 in 2.8
Yea they will be coming out with the supra and the nsx which will be there super cars. No car ive seen beats the 2000 horsepower tuned street gtr on here. The new Nismo gtr is super insane as well. These cars dominate on the street qaurter mile because the all wheel drive you know along with the launches. I don't know what a mustang coyote is even. About 30 years in racing and watching cars since internet first started and never ever heard of mustang coyote, haha. Funny i see them driving around the streets often here as daily drivers. Saw them in a rich area months before they even came here to america. We have also had the illigal right hand r32-r34's for past 10-20 years or so. Evo's are my thing. But lately everyone likes them so i converted to a hyundai genesis or a valositor turbo fan. Aways liked the mazda speed turbo as well but probably never have one. Heard a turbo honda civic stock is coming as well.
I don't like to have to buy my over all car. More of a tuner , fixer , cheaper kind of car guy. Dont like porsche since theres thousands here and old dudes driving them. Sad about both james dean and paul walker and his friend both crashing and dying in those cars. As i get older i have to try to understand and respect other cars. Just got tired of killing guys hundreds of times in muscle cars, trucks and or whatever in my 89 turbo 1.6 mirage. And then them making excuses like well you have a turbo or them losing and saying theres no replacement for displacement. where there obviously is since you lost and to such a dinky almost stock japanese import. And now you see allmost all the muscle cars even corvettes with turbos or superchargers and one volvo i believe has both a turbo and a supercharger in it.
I like your test guys, you are very entertaining. I enjoyed it actually Nevermind the fact Evo can be compared to only one car... and we all know which one ;)
I actually said the same thing, most people will buy Evos and tune them and still save alot of money. No need to test these two cars against each other, GTRs will never see a racetrack for the majority. Evos on the other hand sees alot of race activity. On another note, FQ cars have their own warranties
You mean you never heard of the Targa Rally Series? They are run by amateurs, very different from a WRC. And unlike the WRC, the drivers don't get a practice run before the race, so each actual race is the VERY FIRST TIME they see the course. Also, the WRC races run faster because they are not showroom-stock production cars - they are especially modified for the WRC. The Targa series restricts modifications, so often the cars used are stock (the GTR was only slightly modified).
With just a simple Ecu tune, a stock GTR will make 650 whp. For 15 grand, which should be pocket change for most GTR owners you can get a Switzer P800 package. (800 awhp). Just do a GTR vs Veyron search on youtube, i can assure you, you wont see evo owners trying to compare their cars to those GTRs. Again, they might share a similar drivetrain being awd, turbo'ed etc, but they are completely different cars on a track. Jeremy Clarkson sums it up "the turbo the size of tokyo molested by Godzilla."
I don't care about the cornering g and I won't be going through slaloms. I'd rather have the evo. I love the gtr. it's fantastic. but I'd rather have a 6 speed proper manual instead of the semi auto. and the car is a lil too technical for my liking. the evo is also more tuneable. and also more practical.
trust me on this one! Subaru and Mitsubishi.. have been going at it for a decade now!! theyl go on forever.. they are the type that JUST wanna keep going, and in the process, put everything else to shame that even THINKS of attempting to put its presence somwhere in the middle... but NEITHER of them have ever outrun their cross country sister...
But then after the mods, for how long is that eco going to last? 400hp is a large number for a four cilinder which many owners already complain about having reliability issues with the stock evo :-X
Weird thing is, the acceleration for the GTR is much more brutal and faster than the evo x. While the car was made to specialize in corners, the manufacturers developed the body to be as perfect aerodynamic as possible for maximum potential speed. Which averages around 185-215 depending on how much HP you have. It's handmade so each GTR has different horsepower. No competition. Even if they screwup at the start, GTR will always win. Evos aren't great cars, people don't realize this.
Didn't stop the GT-R from being the overall winner (Modern Class) in another Targa Rally (Targa West 2008) watch?v=pUAWTWUPXvI watch?v=P4LnkJH20Yo An Evo 9 on that same race (which finished 7th overall in the same Modern Class) watch?v=PuDc-RfwiNo And remember we're talking Stock vs Stock here (not against actual WRC use car)
@supervegeta3 it's actually 3,8 for the evo and the price difference isn't massive..it's 10000 for a 2010 model gt-r and 20000 for a full spec 2012 gt-r..don't get me wrong i'm a huge evo fan but the evo is not as good as a gt-r..it's maybe 70% of what a gt-r is..
i live in CONGO and the GTR is around 700,000 coconuts there ! lol, here is Austria the GTR costs 150 000 $ which are around 105 000€ the price is different in almost every country
Well so can a 370z with a twin turbo, which will cost you around $29k, plus another $10-15k for a twin turbo, built block and tuning. That will blow away an Evo and the GTR in a straight line, however on a track is where the GTR will put them both to shame. The GTR was was aimed at another market altogether, it gives supercars a run for their money around any track. Evo's and STI's hold their own against any car in rally racing but to compare them to a GTR aint an apples to apples comparison.
skyline is an amazing car it has a tork compared with the BUGAT veyron with each new generation of the nissan skyline is much more powerful engine combined with excellent stability, not to mention he is also a sporty car because it has height and conventional car my dream is to fly this machine only seen by me wild TV
As for the drag strip, almost any car can do 8 sec runs if you put enough money into it. Not trying to argue, just saying with unlimited resources you can make a 1990 mustang 5.0 do the same thing.
I disagree about the 370z. The nismo edition will cost 39k and only give you 350 hp. It will cost much more than 15k to get it up to the drag time of the ams Evo. When it is as fast on the drag it will still fall on the track due to the evo's 4wd and active differentials (s-awc and ayc). The GTR is a Supercar. A discounted Supercar compared to Lamborghini and Ferrari, but comparable in price to the viper acr and corvette zr1. The reasons the GTR and the Evo are compared are: they are b
@DeviousPrimate just to show that if u dont have all the money in the world to buy a gt-r you can settle for something a tad bit less that is still a good car :)
@kschott185 The AMS Alpha GTR does 9.xx 1/4 mile, your point is? A GTR will still rape an EVO in any track and look a lot better doing it too, except for Rally racing...
be honest im fan of Evo but GTR always won its fast its more power full gtr comes with 26rb and up means much more powerful then Evo X but still love the way its turns and its looks both are best cars ever.
@supervegeta3 Both cars are great, the EVO has a lot of lag, the GT-R has no lag. At the end of the day the tuning capabilities for the GT-R are a lot more than an EVO, the GT-R can probably handle around 800bhp on stock internals. Around small narrow corners I believe the EVO is faster than almost anything out there, but the GT-R has it beat at almost anything else.
That made no sense, ya they are hand produced but this isnt the 1920 hand built engines can be made relatively quick. They are readily available and easy to buy.
they did the slalom wrong. they should have done a few test runs, and then done 4 runs apiece and averaged the speeds. also having only one driver would be better and give more accurate results.
The R&D section of Nissan works individual in Japan and has nothing to do with Renault. This particular car is a Nissan original! Read and think before posting!!!
In my opinion the GTR is the best V6 car out there and the EVO is the best 4 cylinder. Of cours the GTR is a beter car than the EVO but these 2 r kick ass cars!
Now do a rally stage test.
for some strange reason i like the evo better..
Too many variables for a proper comparison!! Different drivers, different tyres, different idiots...etc
v6 vs inline 4.. i love evo..
Rally car VS Road car...pointless
It is true, Evo is designed for off-road rally
The FQ400 is 51,000 in the uk and the gt-r is 58,000 fairly similar.

In the end though, i'd still take the GTR. I love the heritage of the Skyline and not just its awesome power!
@krakmxer its a GT-R R35, its a continuation of the Skyline GT-R, so, it is in fact a Skyline GT-R R35
for the $ id rather the evo. The thought of spending a 100K on a car that only beat the evo (65K) by a lil bit....Id go for the Evo. I have an MR model and I think it is pretty sweet.

The evo looks really
Good from the front

I prefer EVO, but for some reason i wont compare it to the GTR... dont know why :D
The way the Evo looks in this clip is the first time I liked the car more then the evo 7,8 or 9.
@kompressor124 And when did they make this supposed FQ-450? The only other 400+hp Evo I know of is the FQ-400 Evo VIII.
I love both
Nissan since you own Mitsubishi now please make a miracle and bring back the legend with gtr and evo tech in one car
How about at Targa Tasmania 2009 - where the Evo 9 finished 3rd (search for Targa Tasmania 2009 pt7 and pt8 ) behind the Lambourghini Gallardo Superleggera (2nd) and the Nissan GT-R (overall winner)?
Get the Dynolicious app for the iphone.
It uses the iphone's accelerometer to measure anything from lateral G to acceleration G and braking G forces!
yea lap time would be the best.. and btw, no need to put racing tires on both cars, the test is stock against stock.. that includes the tires.
@TrevTec8o8 I can put this question to you in another way. When you see a supercar beat a 4 door saloon would you be surprised?
When its the other way around i guess you will be surprised especially a 2 litre engine pumping out 400-800 bhp on the road. Heck the AMS evo is all it takes to do the job for the GTR
my head and my heart will forever say evo

I'm from the future, and this comment is horse sh*t 🤣 No evo has ever done 4mpg at best. I get 28mpg on my evo 10
@MK1DubStepper The GTR can be used as a everyday car if you 1. have no kids. 2. have kids, but they dont have legs. 3. have no friends. 4 do your shopping online. The Evo is far more practical. both cars are bad ass. I like the look of the GTR and the look of the EVO. they're both win on pricing as well.
@185kschott Let's not get carried away, this comparison is between an FQ-400 and a GTR, the FQ400 being 8k cheaper than the GTR is far from a bargain...

All U Have To Do Is Deactivate The Limiter On The Evo And Modify It A Bit And There U Go!
@1RUNXBL you forgot, it has two extra doors and a BIG Boot aswell.
GTR is twice the price of the Evo and you can void the Nissan warranty with "Hard launches". I will take the Mitsubishi in a heart beat.

Nice I'm a EVO guy but overall Porsche is the best and their rear steering is genious
I don't like to have to buy my over all car. More of a tuner , fixer , cheaper kind of car guy. Dont like porsche since theres thousands here and old dudes driving them. Nevermind the fact Evo can be compared to only one car... and we all know which one ;)
I've driven the Fq400 and I got to say that it takes on corners so badly it felt like a mazda Mx5 gave better fun.

he doesent need to fit a g meter on the gtr its got one already
@njc42292 they are both in the 70k price range i think your talking about a different evo
With just a simple Ecu tune, a stock GTR will make 650 whp. For 15 grand, which should be pocket change for most GTR owners you can get a Switzer P800 package. (800 awhp). Interestingly, the GT-R beat all the other cars in its racing class (including the Evos) at the 2008 Targa West RALLY.
IM A FAN OF BOTH CARS..... AND THE SUPRA AND SUBARU IMPREZA... BUT MY All TIME FAVORITE IS THE SKYLINE....
trust me on this one! Subaru and Mitsubishi.. have been going at it for a decade now!! theyl go on forever.. they are the type that JUST wanna keep going, and in the process, put everything else to shame that even THINKS of attempting to put its presence somwhere in the middle...

It doesnt matter how fast the car is it matters how the driver drives it
They are both fantastic cars i couldnt choose love japanese cars
damn both of these cars would be amazing to drive
@kschott185 the 2012 nissan gtr makes around 530 bhp now.
@supervegeta3 it's actually 3,8 for the evo and the price difference isn't massive..it's 10000 for a 2010 model gt-r and 20000 for a full spec 2012 gt-r..don't get me wrong i'm a huge evo fan but the evo is not as good as a gt-r..it's maybe 70% of what a gt-r is..
i live in CONGO and the GTR is around 700,000 coconuts there !

i prefer aspect of the Evo, color, the lamps etc etc
@svtmattUT well, its not a lancer and the type-r is a bit too cheap
@StanLTU yeah, u cant rally with aover 2.0L engine
Here in Portugal a Nissan GT-R the base version it's like 117000€ Something like 169914$ or 106354£
Hey this does not apply kinda, but was there supposed to be an sti coming out with like 400 hp?
The lower bumper spoiler is missing a few clips....
As for the drag strip, almost any car can do 8 sec runs if you put enough money into it. Not trying to argue, just saying with unlimited resources you can make a 1990 mustang 5.0 do the same thing.
That's exactly what I was thinking when I was watching it.
yep but the US dollar is worth more than ours. so they work out similar. we (nz) prob pay a bit more.
@Emil1787 Japanese never made a V4. They've made some V6's.
is that evo x FQ400 only available in UK? any idea buyer from oversea could get one?
@nikodemusthejester depends on which country you're from
you know how there is always that one person you just feel like smacking..... in this case theres two!
lap time would be the ultimate test of performance
How fast does a FQ-400 go from 0-100? People are saying 3.2 to 3.5 depending on quality of driver? Is this true?
use the evo 9 fq400 or a 8 like the one they race against the lambo on top gear , the one jeremy clarkson drove...
@stankuljo That's cuz they're from the UK!
V6, twin turbo, 3.8 litres, auto-manual twin-clutch, 196 mph top speed, give me GT-R anyday please.
@DeviousPrimate
just to show that if u dont have all the money in the world to buy a gt-r you can settle for something a tad bit less that is still a good car :)
@kschott185 The AMS Alpha GTR does 9.xx 1/4 mile, your point is? A GTR will still rape an EVO in any track and look a lot better doing it too, except for Rally racing...
I want both! :)
be honest im fan of Evo but GTR always won its fast its more power full gtr comes with 26rb and up means much more powerful then Evo X but still love the way its turns and its looks both are best cars ever.
The Nissan GT-R is considered a super car, but the Evo is considered a sports car
That made no sense, ya they are hand produced but this isnt the 1920 hand built engines can be made relatively quick.
They are readily available and easy to buy.
@taz275 no it's not. It's a completely new car.
see the evo tail lights, have problem(reverse lamp)
they did the slalom wrong. they should have done a few test runs, and then done 4 runs apiece and averaged the speeds. also having only one driver would be better and give more accurate results.
The R&D section of Nissan works individual in Japan and has nothing to do with Renault. This particular car is a Nissan original!
Read and think before posting!!!
Let's see. in my opinion is either and Evo 7 or an R34TT
stock doesnt mean S%%%t...nobody leaves an evo stock....Fq400 is pretty tame compared to what we have on streets here in US.
@supervegeta3 im pretty sure that evo's engeine is not 2.0 L
In my opinion the GTR is the best V6 car out there and the EVO is the best 4 cylinder. Of cours the GTR is a beter car than the EVO but these 2 r kick ass cars!
the evo guy hit like every cone haha
wow first time i see an evo X fq400
