Watching you go through a full out mental contortion during this is hilarious and heartwarming. Welcome to the beautiful world of Tori Amos, you’re in for a ride.
“WHAT IS THIS”. Authentic reaction to hearing anything from Boys for Pele the first time. 😂 I was an English major and wrote my honors capstone paper on postmodernism through the lyrics
in one of the old music magazines, Maynard was asked what he was listening to on tour, and he mentions Tori. She also has a couple books out as well and they are very educational and enlightening. My mother birthed me, but Tori raised me.
“Boys for Pele”. Holy shit that album was a Phenomenon wasn’t it? Would’ve been 1996 ish. Absolutely Zero Filler. Couldn’t have put it better myself! Uk leg of her tour promoting this she had Willy Porter as the support. That guy is a guitar genius! Met him a few times. Very humble fella. But, yeah, “Pele” was something else. People still scratch their heads bemused when they hear the album version of Professional Widdow hahahahahaha!
Boys for Pele changed my life as a 12 year old boy with older sisters that were attempting to teach me how to be a good and decent man. Tori is a goddess
I love how he was instantly mesmerized the moment she started playing. And the sheer wonder on his face, in his eyes, throughout the video just grew. This was my catalyst into Tori's music. She's a musical beast
I'm confused by anyone saying they're a fan of Tori but not liking this performance. This is classic Tori. She's very quirky and whimsical. Her lyrics have always been the opposite of straight forward, she's basically from the faerie realm lol. It's either your thing or it isn't, but if you know MJK, you would also know he's very quirky. He sang facing away from the audience the entire time when I saw Tool live. They had acrobatic performers suspended above the stage. When I saw They Might Be Giants in 1997, they performed with puppets. Maybe it's just me, but weird is fun. And Tori is a musical genius. Check her out playing 2 keyboard instruments simultaneously, it's mind blowing. She gyrates on her piano bench, she's very active and when you see her live, it's like she's inside every note. I'm grateful for being able to see her several times and I met her 2x. She's incredibly gracious and kind to her fans. She's a big part of my coming of age regarding music and I adore her.
i got to see her again last summer. the first time i was close enough to actually see the expressions on her face, and it was magical. If she keeps touring, i'm going to need to restructure my budget.
Tori makes a joke and Michael starts laughing, then she starts playing and wipes that smile off his face. You can see the moment everything he thought he knew or believed in the world was shattered. Great channel, Michael!
Tori Amos and Fiona Apple are definitely the two most interesting female solo singers/composers to come out of the 90's. Both of them paired their brilliant songwriting, lyrics and piano skills with their extraordinary voices. They're legends! Always loved this performance of Tori and Maynard and just sad he never did one with Fiona as I'm sure it would've been just as epic as this one.
@@crackupboomAustrian Sorry- Not even close to Tori. Ani is great. Tori is the torch bearer of the KateBush / Peter Gabrial esque role for that era. I love Fiona as well, but not Tori. The only analog I think there is to Tori now is Annie Clark of St. Vincent.
"Musically, I always allow myself to jump off of cliffs. At least that's what it feels like to me. Whether that's what it actually sounds like might depend on what the listener brings to the songs" Tori Amos
Tori Amos is a goddess, period. Don't go for her hits, listen to her live cover instead. Her music is so personal. I've sung covers in bars for 10 years and at some point, did it with a professional jazz pianist. We tried to cover her song "precious things". He never managed to get the rhythm right and I was never able to sing it right. It's the only song I've decided to stop playing for technical reasons. Also: go listen to her cover of Slayer's "Raining Blood" in her cover record "strange little girls"... it's only piano and vocals but it's so heavier than the original.
@@hussaf1 There are many child prodigies (in the sens of being technically proficient on an instrument), it takes something else entirely to do what she does.
Well, Micheal, we don't often see you completely dumbfounded. Tori has such an original style and it is easy to see how a first time experience can really throw you off. I like that you went for it: it felt a little bit like a set up. HOWEVER, you are always looking for the challenge and Guy delivered. Tori puts on a mind blowing show and for Maynard to show up had to have been a pretty huge deal for her fans. He wouldn't have put himself in that kind of exposed place if he didn't absolutely love and respect her artistry.
Her first album "little earthquakes" is one of the great albums I've discovered in my life. Singular. Personal. Powerful. It stands on the shelf beside Srgt. Pepper. and Led Zep 1-V.
WOW! This concert is one of the greatest of all time, in my humble opinion. Not only that, it was for such an incredibly important cause. I’m so glad you were able to experience and enjoy such a remarkably beautiful moment, not only in musical history but in history, period. Take care. ❤❤❤
The piano: she travels with a Bösendorfer, which has an extended lower octave. (She also travels/traveled with a harpsichord for some songs.) They both sound huge! I saw her live (from the front stage fence) years ago; she was very subdued here. As others have noted, she is a force of nature live. Her music and lyrics are a very deep dive.
I've had the pleasure of seeing both Tori Amos and Maynard Keenan play live. Separate, of course. Maynard with Tool(twice), and Tori with her own band. As powerful as they are in the studio, they're even more so in concert.
I love Maynard, but Tori Amos is a legend. After being the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University for her prodigious ability on the piano, she went on to become one of the most profound song writers and performers of all time. Plus, she likely has chromesthesia, which is something I can relate to.
I respect that this is a guitar teacher video and he knows not to play a note during this song or try to explain anything. A huge part of being a musician is knowing when to stay quiet. 🤙
Welcome, welcome to the amazing world that is Tori Amos, she is the most amazing performer, she plays on stage with line 5 piano/keyboards it's amazing 🤩 and this song is one of my all time favorites. Maynard is amazing in this also
I''m gonna recommend something totally different. Since you were talking about her confidence and stage presence, it might be fun to see how she handles mistakes while performing. Since you're a music teacher, I'm sure you've talked to students about how to deal with things going wrong or making mistakes while performing. Tori never struggles on the piano but will sometimes forget her lyrics. So I suggest you look up a video of her making mistakes and there are a bunch available. There's one short compilation called Tori Amos Live funny mistakes that's worth checking out.
As far as a songwriter, singer, musician and performer goes there is no one that compares to Tori! She is my absolute favorite and I've been lucky to see her in concert. I love this song and how she sings it with such happiness. I love all of her songs but "Precious Things" holds a special place.
I'm going to watch this but I can't smash the like button fast enough. This song is off of Boys For Pele. It is still one of my all time favorites. Tori Amos was the artist that showed me a voice was an instrument not just a means for communicating lyrics. I once saw her playing both the Harpsichord and the piano live and it still blows me away.
They weren’t dating. Tori was in a committed relationship with her now husband (and sound engineer) at that point. Tori did briefly date Trent Reznor a couple of years earlier though (supposedly Courtney Love did something that ended that relationship). Tori is amazing, especially live. She’s an incredible piano player and singer, and she’s got charisma for days. Pretty much any performance from the 90’s is worth checking out, but I’d especially recommend “Precious Things” (either solo from Montreux ‘92 or with the band from Sessions at West 54th in 1998), “Winter” from Montreux ‘91 (it’s the one most people have done reaction videos to), “Father Lucifer” from Letterman (1996, includes pieces from The Exorcist and Smalltown Boy) or “IIeee” (also from Sessions at West 54th).
In Sessions she literally goes apeshit telling off Trent during Caught a Lite Sneeze.. you can find it here on RUclips.. one of my favorite live performances of hers 💙
Here’s the backstory to this particular performance. Tori had just had a miscarriage I believe. She was touring like crazy at times playing two shows in a single evening. Tragedy happened, and so she called her friend for support. This happened next. I may be a little fuzzy on the details but that’s what I remember.
@@jzeke1712 I find her breathy rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy" to be likewise, which I wouldn't have imagined possible, but she can perform miracles, lol.
"What IS this?" lol. You started with a Boys for Pele song! Glad you went back to Little Earthquakes. I think Tori is best in chronological order because you can hear her progression over time. She's incredible.
Tori Amos is an amazing artist with a fantastic voice and a very unique style of playing piano. All of her songs are worth listening to. You could start off where she did, with songs off her first solo album, Little Earthquakes. Try: "Silent All These Years", "Crucify" and "Winter". Her covers are also pretty awesome. From this same period, she did amazing covers of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" and The Rolling Stone's "Angie".
haha your REACT was pretty much how I felt the first time i spun Boys for Pele, and STILL do every single time. Muhammad, My Friend gives me chills to this day. Seen it live at least 4 times now, so plain to say I've had what some call an out of body experience at least that many times now.
ahhhhh Tori Amos... one the very precious *few* musical acts that I've longer (and maybe more??) than Tool! Thank you, I'll check out other videos of yours! ❤
Two of my favorite all-time artist. Seen them both live several times (not together). Favorite Tori fact, she was the youngest ever admitted to the Peabody institute at age 5, and she was kicked out at age 11 for musical insubordination.🧐 Little Earthquakes is one of deserted island albums.
Tori Amos, the last prog (no hyphen) big time musician left standing. All of her albums are awesome, but 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' and her last two albums, "Native Invader' and 'Ocean to Ocean' are chock full of complex arrangements, cool riffage on all instruments, and just fantastic song-writing.
Discovered her freshman year in HS. One of the most talented, prolific, and underrated artists out there. Once someone tells me they love Tori, I immediately know we have a lot in common and will get along. Her fan-base is basically a family and she is “Mother”. HUGE fan here. 🙌😭
So happy you played this. I'm a tool fan from the early 90's, but my first love gig was Tori in 92. I've seen tool many times since, but that first Tori gig is still best three gigs ever.
The staccato + heavy bass is her classical training and giant Bosendorfer with extra keys. And wrt to the rest of the lyrics.. they’re all words, but they’re fun to sing. Pele as an album was a whole entity
It wasn't until I saw Rick Beato do a video---think, a live stream---about Tori Amos in 2022 that I really appreciated her talent and, yes, quirkiness, and this video only adds to that. Also, while I've never been compelled to go down the Tool rabbit hole, I do have a lot of respect for them and this very low-key, supportive performance from Maynard only adds to that. Good video, Michael!
😂this was so cool to watch, seeing someone hear and see Tori for the first time. Her no two songs or performances of hers are alike. Her compositions are intense and layered. The populate songs don’t do her massive talent justice. Really hope you get to explore more. Enjoy the ride!😊❤✌️
Yep. I totally flipped when I found this clip. I saw Tori back in the 90s in a small auditorium in Indiana. Finally saw Tool this year in a big arena in San Diego. Absolutely an insane clip with so many layers within if you know anything about the personal background of these two amazing musicians. When Maynard hits the high notes it is an unbelievable gem for music history. This is greatest duet I have ever heard
Tool concert tickets are one of the absolute hardest to aquire. These folks are lucky to see maynard. Also he doesnt really come out on stage and show himself anymore. He usually stands behind a screen since the early 2000's. I saw tool at lalapalooza 98. The year korn was headliner but davis got meningitis last minute. That was the 2nd time in a row i was screwed out of seeing korn. 1st time was korn / whitezombie 97, and ticket master gave me monter jam tickets by mistake. And we didnt notice till we got to Seattle. My next chance wouldnt be for 20 years. But the good news was it was so last minute that they couldnt get anyone to cover for korn, and instead Tool doubled their set and played for 4 hours. It was epic.
Please please please check out her cover of smells like teen spirit. Incredible arrangement on the piano. With her singing and her depth of storytelling emotion with her breaths and voice. Amazing
Hi Michael. I've watched/rewatched some of your Tori reactions. Been a huge TA fan since '91..... but I feel a renewed passion for her performances. Watch 'Crucify' live in Florida. I was there. an almost religious experience!
I got into Tori when I saw her cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit back in the early 90's. Completely drew out the spirit of that a rock anthem and portrayed the insecurity and vulnerability in the lyrics of that song.
I remember hearing this for the first time….via Napster, lol. It was my MySpace profile song for a cool minute! TooL pretty much dominated the spotlight.
Tori amos quirky was probably responsible for my puberty, and introducing me to tool. Adore that woman, true empress now, tho i think she's been more than just a card, or two; the whole major arcana, at least
If you like Tori in this video, you should watch the whole RAINN concert (where this song she did with Maynard was performed), live at Madison Square Garden in 1997. Epic. She’s amazing.
I always enjoyed this performance despite Maynard being more subdued. Their voices sound really good together. Boys for Pele is my favorite album of all time, and Muhammad My Friend is one of the weaker tracks for me. I LOVE the harpischord tracks.
such a natural connection. They have the exact same range. I know because I have it (please love me): We sing Incubus, Perfect Circle, Amy WInehouse, Tori Amos, Tool, Coldplay (sorry), Kermit the Frog, Regina Spektor, stuff like that. Ok. Have a good day.
This album Mohammed my Friend is from is my one desert island album. Boys For Pele. It’ll rip your heart out, mend it, and then make it impenetrable. It’s that good.
Love your videos. Very easy to grasp the info. I found you through your All Them Witches video. I implore you to review another song by them, their discography is so broad. "Saturnine and iron jaw" is one of my favorites off their 2020 album. Looking forward to new videos regardless!
Internally, I'm combusting.... like projectile vomiting into my neighbors, neighbors front yard, like a sprinkler in July with fire hose force!! Much excite and anx, but hopeful with the anticipation that you'll dive deep. AND SHE'S ONLY PLAYING ON ONE PIANO HERE!!! I'm 50, she's my #1, still own all her CD's and even a VHS from my 20's. Household name? Maybe Cornflake Girl? But hands down, her hidden "quirky" (as you said) gems are deep in the bowels of her eclectic works of art. I'm stoked, I'll suggest some fav's but gotta dust off the shelves a bit. L❤VE YOUR VIDEOS.... "diminished triad"..... sketched in my brain eternally 😅😂

Fully enjoying your reactions to all this so much!!!
Same. Cept' NY.
She really pounded the hell out of that piano
Both voices are mesmerizing
So you need to really listen all Tori songs, not only her albums, try Siren from Great expectations soundtrack from 98. Enjoy ^^
Part of the reason that her playing sounds so powerful is that she uses a Boesendorfer, which has an extra (I think) half an octave at the low end.
Oh heavens ❤ welcome to the world Michael 🥰
I remember hearing this for the first time….via Napster, lol. It was my MySpace profile song for a cool minute! TooL pretty much dominated the spotlight.
Tori amos quirky was probably responsible for my puberty, and introducing me to tool. Adore that woman, true empress now, tho i think she's been more than just a card, or two; the whole major arcana, at least
You have experienced Tori Amos…check her out from the beginning, her whole story is amazing, beautiful music especially earlier stuff❤
Yeah, your love of Tori started...right here! ❤
Tori Amos is a genius. And when Maynard's high voice kicks in, it's just goosebumps galore!
He has to at least 30. And this came out in 92 I think. Damn it I'm old.
If you like Tori in this video, you should watch the whole RAINN concert (where this song she did with Maynard was performed), live at Madison Square Garden in 1997. Epic. She’s amazing.
A fan of unique music, and Tori is unique.
I always enjoyed this performance despite Maynard being more subdued. Their voices sound really good together.
Boys for Pele is my favorite album of all time, and Muhammad My Friend is one of the weaker tracks for me. I LOVE the harpischord tracks.
Interesting composition, appreciate your attention to it
Check out Tori's live performance of little drummer boy
such a natural connection. They have the exact same range. I know because I have it (please love me): We sing Incubus, Perfect Circle, Amy WInehouse, Tori Amos, Tool, Coldplay (sorry), Kermit the Frog, Regina Spektor, stuff like that. Ok. Have a good day.
This song has multiple levels of meaning. You need to dig deep to get it. It’s about the Divine Feminine and Her power.
This album Mohammed my Friend is from is my one desert island album. Boys For Pele. It’ll rip your heart out, mend it, and then make it impenetrable. It’s that good.
I knew Maynard back in the 1980s in Michigan ..... He was a good guy .
Love your videos. Very easy to grasp the info. I found you through your All Them Witches video. I implore you to review another song by them, their discography is so broad. "Saturnine and iron jaw" is one of my favorites off their 2020 album. Looking forward to new videos regardless!
When the interwebz were younger, I remember ripping this from Morpheus/Kazaa.... totally forgot about this. Thanks for covering!
She sang 'past the mission' with trent reznor from nine inch nails.
Love this reaction and the expression that goes like: what on earth is going on? yeah it's that good
I completely forgot this song existed. I had a not great MP3 of it at one point. Thank you for reminding me of this and welcome to Tori Amos.
Big tool fan, me. Always liked this.. collaboration? Had it on mix cds I used to make. Maybe even tapes haha
I remember watching this on tv in 1998.
I adore Tori Amos. She defies. When your close friends count Neil Gaiman and Maynard James Keenan among them, you know she reaches deep.
you should listen too hell and you by amigo the devil! Its one of my favorite songs and I know you would love it for its lyrics and style (grotto sessions video)
I've seen her with a 3 keys setup. Grand, Harpsicord, and electric keyboard. And she'll switch between two of them sometimes mid song.
Love the Czech subtitles! (Ty české titulky jsou skvělé!)
