      This is great news Maria - so glad your growing some - I bet it will grow AMAZINGLY out there, such I good growing climate (I miss it). Just remember to bring the tubers inside for a few days before you try them when its harvest time, as this sweetens them up a little - enjoy ✌️🌿

    I grew a few tubers last year for the first time - 2 in a potato bag + 3 in a veg bed. Those in the bag went crazy - they were kept in the greenhouse until it became too big. Those in the bed also went well. Loved the hairy shield-shaped leaves. My question is how best to harvest the tubers without damaging them. I overwintered in 2 pots in the garage. Now I have one pot with 1 new stem and one with four stems. Should I divide the latter before planting out? I quite like the flavour and texture but not everyone does. Worked well in stews, and I also enjoy them raw.

      Hi - Glad your loving the Yacon 💚 Yes, you can divide the crown/growing rhizome to make more plants - ideally before they start sprouting - best to keep it in quite big peices though as this gives better yield. We find in our no dig beds they are very easy to harvest ... but if they go into the lower clay layer they break easily - so its best to grow them in nice deep loose soil for easy harvest - Hope that helps - we've made quite a few other videos all about Yacon too that you might enjoy 👉 ruclips.net/p/PLOidPRQofoMO7DbnFE7dT9EQBNsKncF72 👈

    Thanks for letting us know about this plant, I would've assumed it was something tropical that couldn't grow in a cold climate so I am keen to get hold of some tubers from somewhere and have a try - even I can't screw up Jerusalem artichokes, and these are related supposedly. And hopefully they can take a more prolonged freeze because my winter weather is probably a bit colder than yours on average. By the way, apparently the root part that I think you referred to as growing tips or something like that? Apparently they are called "corms", found that in the Wikipedia article about them. Good luck with the channel, keep plugging away, find your own voice, get people invested in your story (don't have to share more personal stuff of course, but I think the personal touch is what really gets people coming back - hopes, dreams, plans, stuff they can relate to). I remember the Gold Shaw Farm guy when he first started his channel about starting a duck farm he was getting just a handful of views, now a couple of years on and he's getting like 250,000 views per video, I guess just because he's personable and sort of lets you into his story. But it definitely didn't happen overnight. Anyway, I digress, yacons it is, just need to find some CORMS :D

      Thank you Hillside Gardener, for your lovely message and advice 💚 So glad to hear you're going to grow Yacon too, in nice loose soil, we find it grows very easily. We believe they are hardy down to -5 maybe -7oC, but the mulch defo makes a difference in several ways! J.Artichokes are another super tuber aren't they?! Another of our favourites too - such good winter food. I pretty sure you've told us before, but where abouts are you again? - Interesting to know for comparing climate ✌️🌿

      @@freedomforestlife I'm in Serbia, at about 200m above sea level, it's somewhat colder winters than yours, can get down to -10 or so for brief periods, but summers come early and they're long, hot and dry, so a lot of stuff doesn't work the same, like the whole Charles Dowding approach relies on milder year-round weather. I'm looking to mostly shift to perennials and stop mucking about with seedlings etc. Also we chatted about sweet potatoes and going the woodchips route which I am definitely trying to go. All the best!

      Ahh, yes thats right! I remembered our conversations about the watering for Sweet Potatoes... I just had Portugal in my head for some reason... but I knew that didn't sound right! Even here, we find the compost alone can be too dry without the woodchip mulch, for the amount that we can water too... But we are planning an experiment this year with our normal potatoes just in compost prehaps .. but thats more to do with the birds!!!

      Hi Frances, we actually just store ours in the ground and harvest as needed through the winter and spring until the plants begin to sprout from the growing tips again … this works great for us, as we grow it like a perennial, so it’s always occupying the space anyway 💚 hope that helps? Thanks for watching - great to have you with us in NZ … what area are you in??? 💚✌️🌿

      @@freedomforestlife we live on the Thames Coast in the Coromandel area. Thanks for the info on yakon. We had to dig the whole thing up as it was getting to huge for the raised garden we had it in. Will replant soon somewhere better.

      @@francesmclaren7881 you can divide the crown too, to make more plants if you can find the space for them, but kinda best to look at it as a perennial plant in terms of position if you can .. I think cool dark space for storing tubers after harvest will make them last longest … I’ve been chopping them with a mandolin and dehydrating too, to store 💚 my dog Millie, (you don’t see her so much in vids as she’s 13 now) came from SPCA in Thames 🐾✌️🌿

    I am growing Yacon for the first summer here in Norway. I am planning to store them in the basement and garage for next years planting. It is not unusual with deep frost sometime without snow. Last winter was -18*C. How cold is it where you live in England since you can leave them in the ground?

    • @freedomforestlife
      @freedomforestlife  2 года назад +1

      Hi, Our lowest temp where we are in the south is -5oC but its doesn't normally drop that low for long, maybe a couple of weeks right at the end of winter ... I believe -5 is the lowest temp Yacon can take. We mulch ours heavily in the ground too, to give max protections - I would recommend trying to keep yours somewhere no cooler than this. All the best & thanks for watching, hope this helps too ✌️🌿

      @@Thegardeningmcgyver personally I would put them in the ground with a good mulch … whenever we try to store in pots undercover, we always get looses, our rule of thumb now, if we are gifting/selling rhizomes to others is to keep them in the ground here until around mid feb when worst if frosts have past, then pass on 💚
