First Flight Nervousness? | LewDix Aviation Discovery Flight

- A discovery flight is the first step in becoming a pilot. It is the flight in which you finally get to take controls of an aeroplane, the very thing that you have dreamt about for years! But what if you feel nervous? It's inevitable really. But how do you beat it? My theory on this is to simply get behind the controls and feel it all out. The more you see how your inputs affect change in the aircraft, the more comfortable you feel.
Seth did very, VERY well in his discovery flight, and hopefully he goes on to have a great career in aviation.
Enjoy the discovery flight!

Lewdix, in the beginning of your video, it looks like you're in the air flying with no hands, flaps down, and the door open! Hahaha! The ground looks so far away!
No seat belt too. I wanna be Lew Dix
@@homertalk I thought the same! I was like this ausie is crazy !!
I did a double and triple take 😂
Lol i thought the same thing!
Just realised he wasn't in the air! Wow
He did great, you can definitely tell he did his studying to prepare for his first flight. That shows dedication! He will do great and I'm sure he will earn his certificate with that attitude.
He really prepared and did great!
Keep up the dedication and commitment!

This brings back so many memories. The fear, the nausea, thoughts of imminent death 😂, etc… Trust me it gets better! Just did a long solo XC two days ago. Still get the occasional nervous moments but no where near as bad as before.
I did mine this morning. Such an amazing feeling
@@alizain20 congratulations!
That's comforting. Thanks!!
I have about 15 hours toward my private now....I was the same way when I started....sweaty, cramped hands, and I would be completely eshausted at the end of 1 hour of flying. It gets better every time you go up. Stick with it, it will be worth it in the end!
Hey Jeff, Where did you got the private pilot license?
Wish me luck its my first time in a couple days im so excited to get up into the sky
Lol @ “sky daddy” … but seriously, I was impressed how much knowledge the student brought to his first flight!!!
Haha.. Yea man. You don’t see someone being that prepared for a discovery flight that often
This heat has been brutal, innit. He handled it all very well!
The 1st step of a great journey. It's been 24 years since my initial flight training and I can still hear my CFI's voice in my headset - "Head on a swivel", "Step on the ball", and my favorite after she would reach over and turn off the engine and ask - "Now what?" and if I wasn't adjusting my pitch for best glide speed within about 10 seconds, my favorite - "Oh no we're going to die!!"
Oh Lord! ROFLOL!!!!
During my intro flight, I was more scared on the ground than I was in the air because rudder pedals are weird AF when you use them for the first time. I thought I was going to run off the taxiway lol
I used them for the first time about five months ago. they’re a lot heavier than I thought they were and it’s kind of weird the way they work
Compared to me this guy is a legend. I panicked on my discovery flight and asked the instructor to not perform any maneuvers.
So...... I'm not the only one that was terrified during my discovery flight?
I wanted to do a nose up power on my discovery flight (152) and it didn’t stall it was fun!
Why did you stop posting
I didn't stall on my discovery flight, but the instructor let me do some 0G stuff and some really, really tight turns, you could definitely feel the Gs during that
nice bro, my discovery flight is coming up in a month and im more than excited.
This is the most prepared discovery flight guy I’ve ever seen! Dude was practically ahead of most VFR students!
Am I on RUclips
Get a better radio 😂😂
I wish I had you when I was learning. Id be a pilot today. My instructor was a nervous screamer. Made me nervous all the time. Finally gave up when doing departure stalls and I would leave out rudder and we would roll over in a spin. He said you will never be a pilot. Quit and never went back. 15 hours and didnt solo. Now Im old and have vertigo so never will be a pilot. I was an aircrewman in the Navy with 7000 hours as EW Op and Flight Engineer. Lots of stick time, but still forever regret not finishing. Was in Guam at the time and no other instructor was open.
Spent that entire video smiling. Brings back memories as I had my own intro flight a few weeks ago. You CFIs really are a different breed, just handing over controls to complete unknowns and sitting back like you do.
To Seth, the stomach thing may get worse before it gets better but don't let it discourage you. I threw up on my third flight (insert excuses here), but have been pretty fine since. Once you get the scan worked out, anytime the stomach feeling comes on, you do a scan and the feeling goes away. Before you know it, you stop getting the feeling and get to spend more time enjoying / being overwhelmed by the other parts.
Hello from France !
I were hesitating for months to start my private pilot training, I saw many other youtubers here and there, but you are the one who made me take the final decision ! After a discovery flight 2 weeks ago and the discovery of your channel I finally will start my journey tomorrow ! Thanks again for your videos and the way that you share your passion to your students and here !
That's fantastic mon ami! I'm so glad that I could be a source of motivation for you to get out there and fly! Good luck in your training!
You two had a sense of humor that was obviously cut out of the same cloth - educational *and* entertaining!
Have a discovery flight coming up as a Father's day gift! Looking forward to it!
how did it go?
@@chesterfield5704 well I’m just under 100 hours into it!
I have my discovery flight today, couldn’t sleep and this video helped me so much. Thank you!
I love discovery flights! I've done 2, and the instructor let me do most of the flying. I would get a pilot's license, but it's too expensive.
ive been on 2 flights years and years apart....very nervous and uncomfortable both times but i keep hoping next time i go up i wont be terrified. nice to see other people are nervous too
Just did my disc flight today!! I was a little nervous the first 5-10 min , it was kinda windy and bumpy, rainy. After a little I started to feel confident in the air , my instructor was very confident and that is key! I can't wait to start flight school! Thank you for this video!
I just started my flighttraining in April (I'm in Switzerland). I was pretty confident going into the discovery flight, my biggest fear were that I would discover that I had some unknown fears that would pop up as soon as I'm in the air in a small plane. Luckily it was a beautiful day (great early morning light) and no turbulence at all (I only found out later in my first few "real" flights that that was not the "normal", but still nothing I can handle.) The flight definetly sealed the deal and made me register at the school right then and there...
I've watched dozens of Disc flights, and I have to say, you are BY FAR the best instructor. You might be a LIIIITLE lax but that sort of emotion allows the student to be that much more relaxed. I love how you allowed him to push himself as far as he wanted, when he wanted. You weren't pushy and you weren't judgy. You gave confidence when he was doing it all himself. Good god I hope my disc instructor this weekend is as good as you are.
That's all very kind of you to say. There's a common misconception about flight training that the instructor has to be strict and on your back about every little detail that you do wrong. That's a fundamentally flawed way of operating. I prove on a daily basis that you can achieve great things in aviation with my instruction style and I'm so glad that it resonates with you. If your discovery flight instructor isn't someone you can get along with, I highly recommend finding someone else. Remember, flight training is about YOU, not them. You deserve the best so make sure you get it!
I had my first intro flight last week and the winds began picking up speeds to 18kts crosswind and damn my first ride was pretty wild but made me a lot understanding about the forces, And my instructor gave me the handling for around 30 min and i did pretty good. After some time i was into it and those forces weren't bothering me that much. Enjoyed it a lot. Proud moment and my instructor was happy about it. Lots of Miles to go baby❤🔥
Man I just had my own intro flight a few days ago in a 172. I've been waiting all year to do it and it was the most amazing feeling ever to finally experience it - even though I was almost gonna throw up with the nerves before it 😂
ive never related to anyone more in my life. this guy describes exactly how i felt on my discovery
Tell Seth to keep it up. I remember those days when I rolled into Warbird adventures and went up with Kevin in the Citabria. Less than 2 years later I am a PPL w/instrument and almost 250 hours now and will start my commercial. If he keeps watching all of your past videos like I did he will be a PPL easily by the end of the year!
I remember doing the “death grip” on the first few flights. 😂
Yeah, that’s when I discovered I was causing more turbulence than I was fighting.
I can’t wait to go on my discovery flight ! I was a horrible kid, I never finish high school. So, at the moment im studying at home to take the ged test and I can’t wait to start flying. Mark my words.
I’ll be here when you earn your wings. Come back and let me know when you do!
I think seth will fit in perfectly on this channel mate
Discovery flight? These guys are both rock stars!!!
I go on my first discovery flight tomorrow, I am nervous, but watching this channel is really helping me get over it. Thanks and wish me luck.
Ah summer... you should visit Arizona. Highs of 120 degrees this coming week. Besides the supreme discomfort in the cockpit, recently overhauled engines are not a fan of the warmer air. CHTs of 425 and above on rear cylinders are not uncommon in the climb in my Cherokee 160. You can pretty much kiss afternoon flights goodbye during late June, July, and early August out here. Fly in the early morning and be back before noon, or else wait until evening/nightfall are your options. Plus, the thermals become extraordinarily aggressive as the day rolls on. Great video mate! 👍
Lew. Great job putting him at ease and belaying his fears. He's going to be a great pilot, like you, under your tutelage.
Incredibly well prepared for a Discovery Flight! I see a certificate in his future!
So glad you won the Flying Eyes competition to Osh Kosh!! Thanks for the great video.
Seth. Great job man!! Careful, this stuff is addictive.
Lewis, I want to take a lesson with you. Maybe just before my PPC checkride. I'd really love to fly with you, bro.
178 likes and zero dislikes. cant be more clear than that, this video said it all. nothing like it in the world, and it only gets easier with practice. Great video Lewdix!
Thank you so much for that!
Seth is hooked!
Another terrific video! Seth did a great job despite being nervous! This channel is helping my lifelong fascination with aviation overtake my fear of flying. Hoping to get the courage to book a discovery flight someday.
Just do it! Once you’re up in the air you forget about EVERYTHING else. And remember, planes are literally made to fly, and they’re very good at it. You just tell it how and where to fly
I’m in the same boat as you! Terrified of heights, but fascinated with flying! I’m hoping soon I will book the discovery flight and never think twice about it.
Well, he's got the jargon down already, flying steady and not afraid to try new things.. (stomach permitting)
Definately a pilot in the making!
I was also nervous starting out with plenty of death grip - now I've completed all my flight hours and solo cross country time and will do my flight test this year hopefully! Nice intro flight.
Where do you got your private pilot license?
@@Samsonfamilyvlogs Dublin, Ireland
there are multiple kinds of nervousness. i bet he was excited-nervous more than panic-nervous.
i never flew a plane but whenever i fly as a passenger, i get so excited. my hands start sweating, my breathing is different, my body is kinda tense. i just love that takeoff feeling of an airliner :D
so props to him for starting his dream, but i guess he could benefit from a more serious training environment ;P
I did my first flight out of Blackpool airport a few years back and loved it. Got another flight coming up in a couple of weeks.
That's so cool! I rode in the backseat on a discovery flight for my Grandad from Blackpool, years ago.
My discovery flight the instructor asked what I wanted to do...of course power off and power on stalls! Had them mostly mastered in a few minutes. Such a blast...Even did the old "float the phone out of my hand" zero G trick. Now...about ready for a checkride. It's been a blast so far and it's only the beginning! Awesome job making him feel at ease and explaining the "whys and hows" of things. Good instructors are getting harder to find these days, but luckily, I think Seth has found one of the best! (Even if you do hate on the Cessnas! HA!)
Now that is a good instructor. He lets you control the airplane by yourself. I still haven’t done a take off yet after my second flight. He doesn’t even leg me taxi by myself. After watching this video next time I’ll ask him to let me control as much as possible.
Loved how you discretely kept your fingers on the throttle on climb after Seth grabbed the yoke
with both hands. Awesome confidence booster for Seth. Loved the enlarged instruments. Have fun at Osh Kosh,
Wish I had the confidence to go.
Haha you saw it!
I thought he did great! My first discovery flight, I looked over at the wing and imagined it falling off and us nosing into the ground 3000' below. Now, I don't have any concern about that happening. I just solo'd yesterday.......stoked! He'll probably learn much faster than I. haha
It's definitely weird and tough at first! But he did a great job.. Congrats on your solo!
@@LewDixAviation Thanks man. Looking forward to your next live q&a!
He did a very good job on his first flight. You can tell he has been doing some studying, cause most people would not be has knowledgeable about airplanes on their first flight.
Great job for a discovery flight. He’s been watching you tube!
Awesome!! Congrats on your first flight! I'm glad that it wasn't also your last! Love ya brother...seeya tonight! Happy belated birthday, captain. 🎁
I love this cause this guy says all of the things that I was thinking too on my first doscovery flight a couple of weeks ago 😆
Well done Seth! You have eased my mind.
Nice discovery flight! Well prepped and calm.
Seth gets the best instruction in the game....or on RUclips anyway 😂. Nice job bud!
Congratulations, Lewis - hope you enjoy your trip to Oshkosh! Not sure who all was involved but I'm assuming you beat out Josh Flowers, Dan Millican, Christy Wong and more heavy hitters. Very impressive (but not surprising), my brother!
I puked out the window and lost my glasses on my discovery flight and this guy stalls the plane! 😂. Good job and enjoy the training. It’s a great feeling!
Looks like fun! I’m looking forward to my introduction flight.
I was a bit unsure when I came to this channel, the fun factor took me by surprise but it seems to be designed to relax and build confidence in the students. Incredibly informative video. Thanks.
You’ve hit the nail on the head. I don’t operate like a lot of other pilots/instructors. I make flying fun for the people I fly with and it absolutely makes for a relaxed environment for people to learn and enjoy flying. I’m glad you get it! Thank you!
Great video! Exactly what I needed for ideas! I passed CFI Initial check ride yesterday! Thanks Brother!
I flew last Friday evening it was still 96...in Wisconsin. But I kept telling myself "at least you're not in Florida!"
Ohhh I was exactly like this guy on my first flight in a really small plane lol. But 10 hours in, I expect turbulence now and I'm more used to it
Great job, Seth! Really enjoyed your flight and sense of humor. You obviously have a great foundation of aviation knowledge. Hopefully we'll be able to follow your progress on this channel. Good luck.
I was so excited for my discovery flight! Not "nervous" at all. A can't become a pilot but I'd do a discovery flight again.
If you look at the intro closely, tell me if I’m wrong, but does it look like he’s at 32k ft with door open and filming himself just because of where they patched the apron
Teach Me, Sky Daddy!
Damn this guy is so much more prepared than I was for my discovery flight.
Had my first discovery flight last week after Sim-ing for a year.
The reality scared me half to death.
I had to fight the urge to tell him to go back😂
I'm going again tomorrow 😢
I just did my intro flight yesterday... man I wish I had the instructor like this. it was heavy winds gust on the ground were 31 knots so he took off and handed me control at 1500 feet but, he didn't explain anything so I didn't know about the trim or what to do I constantly fought the altitude and wind like crazy. overall I am hooked but felt there was just a couple of key teaching moments that were missed.
🤣🤣🤣I remember the death grip on the yoke! I am so bummed I can't go to Oshkosh 😢
That was one value for money discovery flight! Love the zoom in elements lets see more of these.Seth now understands so much and will be comfortable and confident going forward. Well done on topping the Flying Eyes completiion. Though I didn't help being in the UK shipping adds so much. In fact we now have a guy "Rory on Air " doing the discount in UK, have you seen his channel?
I absolutely love this show.
I love your channel so much! Thank you for doing the videos you do, I'm going on my first discovery flight today and hope to get going on flight school soon if this goes well
I froze mind-wise on my discovery flight. I was very comfortable (thanks to my instructor), but was having too much fun to ask too many things. Hooked!
After 20 years I still get a little nervous on take offs. It sharpens my senses. I'm fine after 1000 ft. (single engine)
Oh good its not just me
I remember my first flight as a kid. C172. Just wait until he realizes how much studying is required. I love my Gleim Book for the written and everything explained for the professional pilot. And the PHAK of course.
Beautiful bro.
Mate you are now my number 1 channel to go 2 for my aviation fix 🙏🖖love from home 🇬🇧 18:51
Discovery flights with sky daddy. I see this nickname sticking around awhile.
Gonna need to make some shirts lol
Congrats on the trip to Oshkosh. Glad you are going to get to finally experience it. I work at Sonex Aircraft on the airport and will be working our both all week so hopefully I will get a chance to meet you.
You're welcome! They are great sunglasses!
That was awesome and so encouraging to watch. I think I'm at the point of scheduling my discovery flight...I'm really excited and hopeful.
That story about having to punch a dude mid-flight had me cracking up.
I nearly broke “The LewDix Throat Punch” to find control of the situation
@LewDix is a fantastic instructor. Just the decision to not rush through for takeoff and allow your nervous student to have time was an ace decision
I have my discovery flight next month! I’m so excited :))✈️✈️
How was it?!!
Omazu Absolutely amazing!!!
lmao, sky daddy. Such a good video since I am going for my discovery flight soon
Sky Daddy thanks you!
I have my discovery flight in about two hours so excited!
Did u make it out alive
awesome video!
love it! great job, looks like a great potential student!
I remember my discovery flight... I felt too big in the plane. Now I'm flying it daily. Was super exhilarating tho. Totally different feeling compared to flying commercial. Did steep turns, and felt the G difference.
Congratulations on the Best RUclips Sellout award! I hear the competition is fierce! XD
Welcome to the LewDix club Seth.... that almost had a naughty connotation about it...
Again.. onlyfans 😂
@@LewDixAviation wait.. wha??? Meeee??
I'll see you there Lewis!
So next T-shirt design is "Welcome to the Sky...Daddy"? 😂 Great job for your first flight. Coming into it with some aviation knowledge is smart so it's not 100%👽
Cfi: You proud of yourself?
Student: yeahhh im a pretty good guy you know 😂
Congrats on Oskosh Lewis
Sweating 😓, welcome to Florida
Heading to Oshkosh definitely going to stop by to say what’s up!
Writing before I even watch this because LEW YOU'RE A FUCKING PSYCHIC. I literally booked my discovery flight YESTERDAY... You freaking legend.
haha that's fantastic!
@@LewDixAviation I will be going up June 21 up here in Ontario Canada. I'm excited and nervous!!!
Big fan. Great video.
Perfect timing-first flight lesson is tomorrow!
Love your style of instructing Lew. Perhaps if my FI had a similar a[[roach it wouldn't have taken me 46 hours to go solo !
This is awesome man! New subscriber earned.
Welcome to the channel!
