For 27 years I lived in sheffield and not far away in the Hope Valley. The Three Merry Lads is a great pub. Good food and good atmosphere and also marvellous views from the beer garden. I also lived a short distance away from it and used to mountain bike all around that area. Not once did I realise until now that this had been a POW camp. Not only that but I could see you walking on the periphery on what seemed to be a superb level path on which to cycle. Never knew that was there either! So many thanks for the video..

Hi Becky, A few years ago I remember my dad having a book by an Author called John Harris. I think the novel was called Covanant of Death, it was set at Blackmires a training camp for Sheffield soldiers. I think the book was about soldiers from Sheffield who evenually ended up on the Somme.
Also talking about Lodge Moor, did you know about the jet aircraft that crashed into the Hospital? See photo of article I have.

Brings back happy memories as a child, we used to walk up Wyming Brook and either onto the 3 Merry Lads for a drink and bag of crips and back down to the car or up to Stanage Pole to admire the views, can vaguely remember my dad telling me about the Camp and unfortunately my Grandma died in Lodge Moor Hospital of a heart attack when I was little but can remember visiting. It can be a little bit bleak up there as its very exposed. I'm going to have a bash at the mushroom soup in my soup maker (cheat) usually make Butternut squash soup during the winter months, its lovely.

Late in WW2 most prisoners in the camp where Italian and considered low risk. They helped with local farm jobs and built the current 'drive' through Wyming Brook and round Rivelin Dams. I do not know who decided to put such a prison next to some of west Sheffield's water supply? The camp area had at one time being considered for a Sheffield airport but the weather was against such a plan. During WW1 there was a mock up of hill 60 on the western front for training purposes just north of the top Redmires dam

It's a E by gum hat 😂 have you seen my whippet 😂 I think most Germans was happy to be prisoners they was treated very well, when you consider rationing ,I think some was allowed in the community to do gardening work and such .
So you can imagine a few romances may have blossomed .

@@BeckandBeyond Maybe they just weren't very well-fed. But I heard the Brits were committed to giving the prisoners comparable food to that of their own troops/people. I know the prisoners were expected to help with farming etc when security issues were under control. I suppose I'd still prefer a tiny shower-cubicle than to have to share

I think you put out some incorrect information in this video, as Italians and Ukranians were allies to the British, so would have never been kept as prisoners by the British

    • @BeckandBeyond

Didn't they change sides? I'm not an expert by any means but it is quite well documented that there were Italians and Ukranians held here although they were given far more freedom than when the Germans were here. X

Thanks …..that was a great watch! Very interesting after a day of watching The Cenotaph 🥲, that walk through the woods was lovely but do you ever feel a bit scared or is it just me being a scaredy cat
. The last time I took a walk,I was followed by a creepy old man, I kept walking very purposefully and went into the nearest garage and the men doing the car wash ranted at him in their own language 🤷‍♀️
It’s a shame as I loved that walk just 10 mins from my town but I
haven’t been back so now do exercises at home as I don’t like gyms much nor can I afford it !!
You look great in that country cap of knowledge 😂
I don’t get notifications of your blogs now ( nor James channel) I must check my settings again…..grandsons have been on my iPad!!!
Here’s to the next one… I too, like being cosy in my little house, my reading corner with my old ancient comfy chair surrounded by books CDs and vinyls…heaven 😂😂
    Take care and keep warm
