  • In this session, Thai Costa explores Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the Global South, drawing from experiences in Latin America and Asia to highlight the importance of culturally attuned approaches. Through real-world examples, Costa reveals strategies for fostering inclusive environments that honor the unique challenges and contexts of diverse regions. This understanding of local cultural nuances provides a valuable foundation for advocates working across different social contexts.
Building on Costa’s insights, Roxie Chia and Stefanie Ann dela Cruz share case studies from Pakistan, Taiwan, and the Philippines to illustrate culturally sensitive advocacy in action. They discuss how understanding and respecting local traditions helps to build trust and ensure long-lasting change.
Davina Goh examines how an understanding of personal and cultural perspectives can enhance advocacy for animal welfare in Asia. Drawing from her experience, Goh emphasizes adapting outreach to local attitudes toward food and animal welfare, engaging participants in reflective activities to better connect with their audiences. This approach not only strengthens advocacy impact but also builds on DEI principles by respecting regional values and beliefs.
Together, these presentations showcase the importance of culturally informed strategies-whether in DEI, animal welfare, or vegan advocacy-demonstrating how regional sensitivity is key to global impact.

Asia Farm Animal Day (AFAD) is a celebration of the people and organizations across Asia who are working to protect the farmed animals of the region. Together we connect with like-minded advocates, learn from leading pioneers, increase the impact of our work, and create systemic change for farm animals in Asia.
AFAD 2024 is co-organized by Asia for Animals (AfA) Farm Animal Coalition and the Animal & Vegan Advocacy (AVA) International.
