I’ve waited so long for someone to react to Sapphire and Steel! An absolute masterpiece of its time, but sadly overlooked by so many. Thanks so much - looking forward to the next installment. 👍👍
Yes, there's nothing quite like Sapphire and Steel. The show is a testament to what can be achieved with a miniscule budget if you have the imagination and the right actors. The video releases for the series went for the boring option of naming each story Assignments One through Six, but there were several titles invented retrosopectively for the six stories of Sapphire and Steel. The ones I always liked the most were: 1) The Time Menders 2) Waiting Room 3) Cages 4) Obscura 5) Murder Me Twice 6) Time Snare But the most common ones seem to be: 1) Escape Through A Crack in Time 2) The Railway Station 3) The Creature’s Revenge 4) The Man Without A FAce 5) Doctor McDee Must Die 6) The Trap
Ah Sapphire and Steele. They really don't make them like this now at all. And unbelievably this went out about 7pm on weeknights. Some of these stories to this day still haunt me. They really should be enjoyed with the lights turned low, and the wind rattling at the windows. And the combination of McCallum and Lumley was inspired.
Ooh loved Sapphire and Steel as a kid. Proper weird and creepy. Basically ghost stories but with scifi twist. And Joanna Lumley was of course stunning. 😍
I started mentally drooling when I discovered this as a child. I was too damn smart and too quick for my own good. I started watching this and I went after it like a hungry dog after a meaty bone. There's so much richness to the story, the atmosphere, utter talent and cleverness creating the spoken and unspoken parts of the show. This takes the power of effort that is usually so stupidly, bluntly, ham-handedly applied without any craftsmanship or pride and compacts it down to a knifes-edge so you get a very fine, very clever effort with no kludge. A breath of fresh air.
I saw this as a child. It was shown after 9pm on (I think) BBC2. It was THE thing to watch at the time. We had proper telly back then. :-) Sapphire & Steel, starring "Ducky" & "Patsy". It is such a shame that Joanna Lumley was never cast as a time-lady character in Dr Who back in the day. She would have been very good as a friend of Romana or something mysterious.
This is still one of my favourite shows along with The tomorrow people, Timeslip, Children of the stones, Doctor Who and Catweazle thanks for reacting to three of them.
Big shout out to David McCallum, star of Sapphire and Steel, The Man from Uncle and lots of other stuff who sadly passed away today. Sounds like he was a wonderful guy who at the height of his fame got more fan mail than Elvis apparently. RIP.
I'm so happy you're doing this series and that you're enjoying it. After recommending it a couple of weeks back I went and rewatched the first 3 assignments. Yes it's addictive, good story telling.
Wait, this is a thing that is happening? Brilliant! Elemental time agents! Pelmets! That weird old cloaked guy with the plague shuffling down a corridor from beyond infinity that really fucked my brain up as a child (thanks for selling me that VHS, Forbidden Planet)! Excellent.
I love this show so much, so happy to see you doing it and enjoying it so much. I don't think there's a single weak episode in the whole 2 series. Can't wait to see your reaction to assignment's 2 & 4.
Great to see you reacting to this. Double likes, if I could. I was grinning all through your reaction. "Weird" is probably the best description for Sapphire & Steel.
Oh wow - as soon as I saw the video title, I thought - 'She's going to absolutely adore this' - it doesn't look like I was wrong. Brilliantly strange TV from the seventies. You should check out some of The Prisoner and The Avengers from the 60s too when the summer rolls round and you have some more free time.
This was ITV's answer to doctor who. It used to scare the poopie out of me. To this day I still find it fascinating. Will you be listening to the big finish Sapphire and Steel?
This is fantastic stuff. Glad you seem ok with the pace, which I think would be slow for a lot of people today. Seeing the opening also reminded me of the one thing that bugged me every show....Steel is not an element!
@@alwillcox Very true, but it's weird that that never bothered me as much. I think as a kid i knew how steel was made, but not exactly what Sapphire was.

This was even weirder than I remember. Bonus points for the word Pelmet.
Pelmets used to be great for displaying your nick-nacks.
It is always special for me to find someone new being introduced to Sapphire and Steel.
I would LOVE a brand new series of Sapphire and Steel. I can picture them now in a disused industrial area and Sapphire in a blue dress suit 🙂

A great, spooky show! Also, those eyes, that pout, the hair kept me watching-and Lumley was good-looking, too...

Enjoyed the first episode of The Tomorrow People - then it went soap opera and gave me a great, clanging headache.
Big shout out to David McCallum, star of Sapphire and Steel, The Man from Uncle and lots of other stuff who sadly passed away today. Sounds like he was a wonderful guy who at the height of his fame got more fan mail than Elvis apparently. RIP.
Yipee ! -so glad you are watching this !
A great and very underrated series. This story is supposedly called either "The Old House" or "Escape Through a Crack in Time."

Forbidden Planet have a lot to answer for. Especially the Newcastle store.
@@medusacascade The very shop. So much pocket money, so many things.:)

Hurrah - so pleased you're doing this! We rather suspect that you'll love this! :-)
Oh your watching one of my favourite shows with of my two favourite actors ever.
Just wait until assignment 2! And 4 is my personal favourite.
Great reaction! I'm glad that you liked episode 1. It was a very interesting and enjoyable show. I'm off to watch your other reactions now 😀
You’re on the start of a brilliant journey
Damage count 1: Parents M.I.A.
Damage count 2: Ripped a page out of child's book
Great to see you reacting to this. Double likes, if I could. I was grinning all through your reaction. "Weird" is probably the best description for Sapphire & Steel.
Fabulous

this programme scared the shit out of me as a kid, there was nothing else like it on the TV then
Brilliant!
(Hoping that The Prisoner is on your list too.)
"Tear the rhyme out if the book!" And every book lover cringes.
I loved Sapphire & Steel. It was a series before its time I feel. If it was made a decade later I believe it would have been more successful.
Enjoyed this?...wait til you get to assignments 2&4🎩
ooohhhhhh yes i love this programe so many strange and wonderfull things
What you have to realise is that this was a show aimed at children. It was wonderful and terrifying.
This was ITV's answer to doctor who. It used to scare the poopie out of me. To this day I still find it fascinating. Will you be listening to the big finish Sapphire and Steel?
Love this show 🎥
I had a pelmet like that.

Neither is Sapphire!

Did you say you watched and reviewed "The Prisoner" too?
Milo o sheas son
the only down side to this first story is the kid actors
