I’m an ambulatory wheelchair user and this is great! Love the “disabled people are angry” part, had me cracking up! The only thing I get angry about is when things aren’t accessible.
As a child of a wheelchair user I have been asked many of these misconceptions by random people (like in grocery stores) and kids at school when I was younger. Just a few that I think of off the top of my head... being told how amazing and special and brave my mom is (for going grocery shopping or things like that which to me.. an eight year old I was like why all the other kids and their moms go grocery shopping??), being asked if she drives the car in her wheelchair and/or suddenly has use of her legs to use the gas/break pedals, asked if she swims in the pool in her chair (lol), and people flailing around to open doors for her or insisting on helping her push her own chair (which excuse me personal bubble area please don’t touch them or their chair to “help” unless they ask or accept help). Probably plenty more but just made me think of some of the things I remember from growing up that people would do/say!
It’s amazing how free people are with very personal questions about disability.... They don’t stop when the person with a disability is an adult, either, unfortunently.

I will say that I genuinely didn't know until a couple years ago that people who were paralyzed could drive, but only because I didn't know that there was such a thing as hand controls - I had never heard of them, never saw anyone use them, so didn't know they existed. I also didn't know vehicles could get modifications that weren't installed in the manufacturing process. Now I know both, and seeing how different people use them to live life to the fullest just brings me such joy - adaptations have been developed to help those who need them.
I am a wheelchair user myself and have been since the day I was born. I love this video it made me laugh and it was excellently done. Best wishes from the UK xx
Not sure why the video got any dislikes at all. Wheelchair users want to be as independent as much as possible. This is a perfect example of someone who refuses to blame something else on her challenges. She just gets out and makes it happen!
I can't tell you how many times poeple have asked me if I sleep in my wheelchair! This is one of the funniest video I have watched in a while would love a part two.
Very funny. I think another misconception is that all wheelchair users suffered a spinal cord injury. In my case I have SPMS. There are many other medical conditions that can lead to the use of a wheelchair aside from SCI. This video was awesome I especially like how mad you were. 🤣
@@ashkinnally6316 I have POTS too but my reason I use a wheelchair is because my anxiety triggers a neurological nerve that causes my legs to forget how to walk
I also have SPMS. I can and constantly in and out of my chair. I have leg strength(but doesn’t last long)just can’t propel them forward or balance. I love peoples expressions when they see me get out of chair, load chair in my backseat and then shuffle to driver’s seat 🤣
Such a great video. What is SPMS? How does it affect you? I was not able to find it online. I have Erythromelalgia and necrotic bones that break easily. I can walk but it is painful.
I have never thought that a wheelchair user couldn't drive (probably because I knew a guy who did) or thought they slept or showered in their chair. As far as laundry/eating etc I know that some have great difficulty with it if they have limited core, hand or arm function. (thinking of Cole from roll with Cole and Charisma).
Here is one that I hear a lot. You can't drive a sports car if you're a wheelchair user! I get dirty looks and comments every time I pull into a handicap parking spot in my Camaro SS. They take it back when I take my chair out and put it together. Also, I drive a race car, so when people see me getting out into my chair at the racetrack, they look completely shocked! Have a great day!
You are so amazing Chelsie! I agree with all of these and I loved how you explained the one about sleeping in your chair because people tell me that sometimes too!😅
This was the best and I have definitely gotten a lot of these before lol! Bria's acting is on point and amazing. You being "angry" had me rolling! ;) Good laugh and also educational
I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This ruclips.net/user/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.
Hi Chelsie, thanks for a great and humorous video! I've been a wheelchair user all my life. Almost 60 years! One thing I would like to add is that many of us are fiercely independent because we have to be and in most cases we do not want or need help with anything. I would just like to say to the able bodied population don't just come up behind us and start pushing us because you think we need assistance. This is really annoying! You may ask us if we need help. If we decline your offer please respect that and go on about your business. In general, I do not want anyone doing anything for me that I can do myself. I can and have done many things that most able bodied people cannot do. I have a good friend who used to tell me that I have a lot of nerve calling myself disabled since I can do many things better than he can! This would not have happened if I would have had parents and friends always trying to do everything for me!
I relate to this very much. I have had people move me out of way to get past me in shops, rather than just say excuse me, and I've had people lean on my chair to reach things too, it drives me mad! Xx
@@christinabellamoore 😱 When I was using my manual chair, I was waiting outside for the bus to arrive. A woman came up behind me and said, "Oh hunny, you must be cold, let me get you out of the rain". And promptly took me back inside. She said, "There you go now sweetie, all warm and dry now" and she walked off all proud of herself for doing her good deed.
Thanks for the laugh. My dad was in a wheelchair from Polio at 11 yrs old. But back in 1932 they thought that people in wheelchairs were brain dead. I have a news paper clip on my Dad, with heading "Disabled boy at 14 gets essay award". Like there were astonished. People used to talk to my mum like Dad couldn't communicate. Dad would pop up and say, "you can ask me if you like?" I suppose if someone is not around someone in a wheelchair, they wouldn't know. I use to like driving my dads car with hand controls, as they acted like a cruise control in the 1970 Chrysler Valiant. Not sure if any cars had cruise control back then.
OMG, I have been doing it all wrong for so many years! I thought you were supposed to sleep with your wheelchair! Last night I tried it without my wheelchair, and OMG was that so great! 🤣🤣
I ended up a paraplegic at age 65 and I am in a power wheelchair. I turn 75 in a few weeks and I have learned to do all there things myself. Loved this video, you were great. God Bless young lady.
Enjoyed your video! I am 66, Polio in 1958, wheelchair since 1995. My manual chair has same back as yours. That has prompted more comments, mostly from PT/OT’s. I am having to depend more on a power chair and I H A T E it. You could do a great comedy video watching me trying to adapt. Seriously, I would not trade a minute of my life in a chair. Yeah, it’s painful and a serious hindrance, but is my challenges that have brought me to this place. The journey is worth it. I love your humor and storytelling. Keeping it real!!! Oh, almost forgot, I do nap (getting older). Not a good idea. I fell over, on my back all tangled in chair on top and my head through the bedroom wall. My wife had been napping in her recliner next to me. Funny now, I’m keeping the hole in the wall. Reminds me not to take myself too seriously.
One thing that’s not a misconception: money changes everything. Most of those who don’t have it, have an entirely different experience from those who do. And being born disabled usually results in a different perspective then if you’re in an accident and have settlement money. You have more advantages afforded to you. It’s easier. Plain and simple.
Or where you live? In England, we don't have to worry about health insurance and we get an allowance just for meeting the costs of being disabled, which is not related to whether or not you have a job or what the rest of your income is. I would have to be a lot richer for it to make a difference (not settlement kind of money) and though I live a lot better than if I only had the basic social security, it wouldn't be disability related things that I would not spend money on.
I understand, and you are correct. I was fortunate enough to have a job and even with insurance, there was never enough money for adapting my home, and many other things. My power chair was billed at over $32,000. And that is in addition to the other things like vehicle modifications.

You did an excellent video, thank you. I remember a few years ago someone wanted to know who changed the hinges on the door to the expandable hinges. I told them I did, they were thinking that no way could a wheelchair user remove the door and re-install the door. I stretched out my arm to show them I could reach the screws on the upper hinge just fine. I also changed out a tall 30 gallon water heater sitting on an elevated shelf in its little closet. Last month was 10 years in a chair for me, I've learned a lot in that time. I can still do many things, I just have to do them a little differently.
Chelsie Thank you for sharing the video. I do sleep in my wheelchair every now and then. But not on the bed like that. I'm usually have someone here to help me in and out of bed . But I do things with one hand. I have been doing that in a long time ever since I was a little girl. I had down a flight of stairs when I was 6 months old. But I do have my feelings in my whole body. I kept myself strong and I'm doing everything as long as I can. Thank you for sharing that video my friend
Wow thats great.I had a cousin who was confind to a wheelchair bcause his feets were paralize and this man was so happy he saw himself as a surviver not a cripple and he was capable of helping himself in some areas independently.
I have met and know wheelchair users especially as part of Diveheart I seen wheelchair users scuba dive and they did good. I never doubt them not one bit at all they are resilient.
I have severe back and knee pain and can walk short distance but do use my wheelchair if out and about, does make it easier for my wife having a motor under chair for assist when pushing me.. Great video..
This is the first time I've ever watched any of your videos but I find them funny and I have cerebral palsy myself especially the parts when you're explaining what people think we can't do I find those videos funny so I hope you do more videos like this in the future
I love this!!! Where did you buy the hand control for the car?? I’m a 23 year old wheelchair user and I really want to learn how to drive but prepared cars are expensive.
I always have people ask if I live by myself (creepy) and when I say yes, they ask shockingly, "Do you cook for yourself?!" Uh yeah! Lol btw, I have handle bars on the back of my chair and it super handy when shopping to use a giant IKEA bag on my lap with the handles strapped to my handlebars. I can fit everything and carry it in in one swoop.
Great video. :) The driving issue is a little complicated. A lot depends on *why* you're in a wheelchair, and what kind of secondary diagnoses you have. I don't drive. I've got spina bifida and hydrocephalus. I have a startle reflex, no depth perception (as in, I only see in 2 dimensions) and problems with attention. I was told I had a 50/50 chance of being able to drive, but I decided not to, because I felt really uncomfortable during the driving tests, and I didn't want that 50/50 coin toss to go the wrong way and end up killing someone on the road. So there's nothing inherent about being in a wheelchair that would prevent one from being able to drive (given hand controls, obviously), but it's those secondary conditions that might make driving either a really bad idea or impossible.
Lol...I like your answer to the angry question. My mom always is surprised when not a lot bugs me and I'm doing well since I had to start using canes and then a chair.
Omg you should definitely do content videos that are relatable for wheelchair users! I'm one of them and they're literally gonna be hilarious please do it! Much love!😄
Excellent! I laughed and cried...threw a tantrum (just for practice), too! Quad for forty years now, we give people like you a bad rap - it's all good. Lol
We can do everything like everybody else's the things we can not do. We work out somehow. I loved the video. It is very time-consuming to be angry so we are not angry people 😊😊
RUclips has decided that I need to see this type of video. Wow! You have such a beautiful soul and such a great attitude!. And, you are so funny. Thank you. You are inspiring.
WOW- you're such an inspiration. - insert sarcasm- Great video! I especially love the sleeping in your chair, that's the equivalent of wheelchair bound.
You are so funny! I just found your channel and subscribed. I like how you take the misconceptions and correct them in a humorous manner. I am a wheelchair user myself and get strange remarks all the time.
OK, I do sleep in my chair. It is electric with full tilt and leg raise. BUT: Only for short naps!!!!!! Sleeping in it all night is like a really bad idea. I do not like pressure sores and the bed is real comfy:) PS: I do not do the laundry, I do the cooking:)
Thanks for recognising that people with disabilities can have all different kinds of sexualities! I personally identify on the ace-spectrum, and with the common stereotype/misconception everyone is fighting against, it sometimes feels weird to actually be disabled and ace
"People in wheelchairs cant..." I get that a lot, and for me, it's #challenge_accepted. My favorite thing is when people find out for the first time I am an assistant teacher in my brother's martial arts class.
Thank you so much for making this hilarious, but educational video! I am able-bodied and have a rather ignorant follow-up question that I hope isn’t rude! What is your process for getting your wheelchair in and out of the car? Is that something where you’ll have someone assist, or is that something that you also do independently?
Most of us do it independently! Chelsie does, and she has a video on her channel showing how she gets her chair in and out of different cars. Typically, someone in a lightweight manual chair can get it in the car independently, or by using an aftermarket device to help.
I wish I could do more. I have been in a chair 4 months due to spine problems and loss of function in both legs. The problem that I have is I still have SEVERE pain and spasms below my waist. So bending reaching twisting all hurt to tears. Otherwise I could probably do more .
I’m a chair user doing research on making videos or showing more of how I do things, and this video has made me laugh but I have dealt with these misconceptions
Wohooow! Thanks so much for this video! I'm also wheelchair user and know a little of these misconceptions. Please do have the best of luck.May I use your video for inspiration for my own channel?
I don’t bathe in my ‘chair, but I do sit in it naked when getting in or out of the shower. Dear parents: PLEASE keep that in mind when you think it’s OK to let your kid play in my ‘chair when I’m not using it!

It’s amazing how free people are with very personal questions about disability.... They don’t stop when the person with a disability is an adult, either, unfortunently.
Another massive misconception is that we are free luggage carriers. Sometimes, suitcases would get piled on my lap and those things are HEAVY!
What the heck! At least ask before putting something in someone’s lap! That’s just common sense!

That's just horrible. It's so not ok for someone to be robbed of their dignity like that. Something should be done ASAP to get her a new PCA!

Genius! Such a good video to show just big misunderstandings of wheelchair users. As a wheelchair user I loved it.

And what’s more, I use a wheelchair, drive and do not use hand controls. Different dx allows different use of legs. Always learning.
I knew a guy that was a pilot. When he became paralyzed, he modified his plane with hand controls. He was able to get a provisional FAA certification.
I'm use a wheelchair but do not drive, but it's not because of the wheelchair, it's because I have blackouts.

I’ve literally had some people ask me if I sleep in my chair! Lol
I do take naps in mine, but mine reclines & tilts all the way back.
Same!
Chelsie
Thank you for sharing the video.
The tantrum was hilarious! The groceries was REAL!❤
Your fiancée raising a hand at 3:29 , I’m dead
I have severe back and knee pain and can walk short distance but do use my wheelchair if out and about, does make it easier for my wife having a motor under chair for assist when pushing me.. Great video..
Love all your videos chelsie!! :)
Omg this video was awesome!!! We can still live a full life! This video is great for the community
I always have people ask if I live by myself (creepy) and when I say yes, they ask shockingly, "Do you cook for yourself?!" Uh yeah! Lol
btw, I have handle bars on the back of my chair and it super handy when shopping to use a giant IKEA bag on my lap with the handles strapped to my handlebars. I can fit everything and carry it in in one swoop.
This video needs to go viral right now
Thank you!!
@@cranberrytriangulum YES PLEASE! support my girl!!!
@@ChelsieHill LOVE YOU BABE!!
Great video. :)
The driving issue is a little complicated.
I have the same diagnoses. I agree 100%.
Lol...I like your answer to the angry question. My mom always is surprised when not a lot bugs me and I'm doing well since I had to start using canes and then a chair.
Thanks for showing them how we live our life 🧡🧡💗💗🧡💜💜💜🧡🧡
One I get all the time is people who assume I can't talk... especially hosts/servers at restaurants. I have no idea how this one works lol
That can be an advantage though, I wouldn't want to talk to idiots who think we can't talk anyway lol
Lol
Loved the multicolor wheels during the angry bit.
The angry part was HILARIOUS!!!!
This video was funny asf! Youve got some comedic talent. The sleeping skit and the exposed vag getting in the shower cracked me up.
Heights of hilarity! ..This was awfully relatable.. Thanks for the laughs, Chelsie. God's bless :)
Tommorrow I go to school in my wheelchair first time. I needed this to just make me smile
As a double amputee myself, the angry one made me crack up so loud it scared everyone at home lol.
Im new to your channel and i love the video 😊so cool to watch
WOW- you're such an inspiration. - insert sarcasm-
Great video! I especially love the sleeping in your chair, that's the equivalent of wheelchair bound.
That is the BEST fake angry I've ever seen 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You are so funny! I just found your channel and subscribed. I like how you take the misconceptions and correct them in a humorous manner. I am a wheelchair user myself and get strange remarks all the time.
Oh and I love your house. Very pretty.
So funny. As wheelchair user so great to have someone say this
OMG @ 6:15 some days! Especially when the person comes running up and takes over. Sharing in the life!
Sleep in ur chair part.... 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣....I'm dead.
Oh my gosh so real. Love this. Amen Chelsie. ❤️❤️❤️
I thought I’d fall out my chair laughing about the driving loved it 😆
The "temper tantrum" in the kitchen was HILARIOUS. What fun.
"Howd you sleep"
"Good, my legs are still asleep tho"
That would be my response just saying lmao
…I’m stealing that. 😂
I do everything myself, shower, sleep, cook, laundry and drive, I can't walk and can use some of my leg power to get in bed, showers and so on.
Nicely edited video, as well as light-hearted. I really must teach myself more on video-editing..
I loved the video! My girlfriend is a wheelchair user, and so I have seen and hear some of these misconceptions before.
You are so hilarious 😂 love your video, just came across your channel. And you are beautiful 🥰
OK, I do sleep in my chair. It is electric with full tilt and leg raise. BUT: Only for short naps!!!!!! Sleeping in it all night is like a really bad idea. I do not like pressure sores and the bed is real comfy:)
PS: I do not do the laundry, I do the cooking:)
Thank you for sharing I really get that a lot too. Now I can just share your video to everyone ❤...
Haha definitely laughed throughout this video, loved it! A few of these have definitely happened to me 😂
I love the bulldog just watching you unload the car. 😊
Thanks for recognising that people with disabilities can have all different kinds of sexualities!
I personally identify on the ace-spectrum, and with the common stereotype/misconception everyone is fighting against, it sometimes feels weird to actually be disabled and ace
It would be weird if only abled-bodied people could be of the LGBT-spectrum. Whoever claims disabled people can't be LGBT is weird.
"People in wheelchairs cant..." I get that a lot, and for me, it's #challenge_accepted. My favorite thing is when people find out for the first time I am an assistant teacher in my brother's martial arts class.
Exactly on point!! I love this video!!
Madison Russell thanks so much for your reply, Madison! I’ll go check out the other videos too. 😊
Heres an older video i did showing how i get in and out of the car I showed a SUV and Sedan 👍🏼

I might take a nap in my wheelchair but I would never sleep in it.
5:47 Watching this at 2x speed reminds me of The Sims video game. Haha Great video!
Great video! I did laugh especially at the I'm angry one which reminded me of the movie Enchanted when she realizes she's angry LOL😂!
I absolutely loved your fake tamper tantrum 😂
I wish I could do more. I have been in a chair 4 months due to spine problems and loss of function in both legs. The problem that I have is I still have SEVERE pain and spasms below my waist. So bending reaching twisting all hurt to tears. Otherwise I could probably do more .
I’m a chair user doing research on making videos or showing more of how I do things, and this video has made me laugh but I have dealt with these misconceptions
for groceries my spouse got me a little personal fold out grocery cart so I can wheel it around as I wheel around.
This was a funny video! My husband is in the wheelchair and we often get asked weird questions…. Funny video!!
Wohooow! Thanks so much for this video! I'm also wheelchair user and know a little of these misconceptions. Please do have the best of luck.May I use your video for inspiration for my own channel?
