At last example motor is running in the same direction after stopping you have to give delay after changing the direction.

will this work if i disconnect arduino from usb.meaning is a 9v battery enough.
or do i need a DC jack also.

After removing USB,
To power your Arduino, you can also use Vin and GND
Motor driver also has 5v output pin.
You can use that.

If this doesn't work, use 9v battery and power Arduino through round pin connector.

No you are not supposed to connect 12v, Arduino will burn out,
12v from external supply will go to motor driver
And 5v from motor driver will go to Vin
You can check circuit from video description i shared
