maybe you know this, but when your putting the engine back in its possible to nip the seal in the pump in the bell housing with the drive tangs of the snout on the back of the torque convertor i did it on my 3cx had to pull it apart again oil everywhere,i herd after i had finished mine that you can hang the torque convertor and backplate on the pump in the bellhousing and work through the hole at the back of the bellhousing for putting the bolts into the flywheel, probably no harm to replace the seal in the pump in the bellhousing when your at it.
Good old boy ! Thanks for the tip. We noticed it was similar to the early loadall type so guessed it could be an issue. Not a bad idea about doing the seal while its apart either. Thanks for watching and thanks for the advice !
Your crane and correct lifting chains with a colleague to help made that job much easier than might have been the case that's for sure! It has left a big hole but that makes it much easier to clean and check out all the remaining bits as well.
Thanks for another installment she's gonna be running good and strong after this, I did a mk2 years ago, it was unreal the power it gained on hills and pushing. When she goes back in are you changing the rubber engine mounts, mine are getting a bit floppy and need 1/2 a Viagra or something to stiffen them up L.O.L. There's loads of mounts on Ebay but part no's don't match up in my book, maybe they cross over to newer ones if you do change yours I'd be interested in knowing a part no if possible please. I figured a temporary tire for the front on mine, the tire shop had 2 used 33x12.50-18 10 ply truck tires for $100 the pair. I'll run those for now and see how they last, it was never a problem with the old landy tires of the silage pit on loaders back in the day ;). I ended up finding a rebuilt county motor for my seized 954 out near the Alberta border, it's quite the trip there from Manitoba so fuel, food and staying out there a nights probably spent the new tire funds this month. My girlfriend suggested i sell some of this iron !!!!!!!!!!, I think she's wanting to trade it on some sparkly ring of some sort, I see more iron before that L.O.L. Take care, see ya next time .
Funnily enough I was looking at the mounts last night and although not too bad, I will replace them. I'll let you know the part numbers when I get them.
Just found your channel looking for old JCB vids so looking forward to seeing this machine getting sorted and checking out your other work. I'm a diesel fitter for the fire brigade so don't get to work on great old bits of kit like this so i've subscribed keep up the good work.
Good to have you along Jim. There's a fair few vids to go through and catch up with what's been going on to this point and lots of projects on the go, some nearer to completion than others !
there is one of these JCB in a salvage yard in Fairbanks with engine pulled out, I tried to buy it 20 years ago, I'm sure it is still sitting there. the backhoe was on a sideshift slide that is unusual in US. nice to see they put a drain plug on the torque converter.
Thankyou for the video.I have the same maschine vith broken transmission 1 and r ewerse dosnt work.my question is -- to take off the transmission do i remove the engine first? I will be thankfull for any answers.
If your machine is a Powertrain (around 1979-1980) then you will be able to remove the rear propshaft to the back axle and should be able to remove the transmission from the rear and below.
Hi all, on all automatic transmissions the torque converter has to be unbolted from the engine, just rotate the engine to get all the bolts out, the engine will lift straight out, the torque converter can be easily damaged doing it this way,
if the engine isn't seized its put a spanner on the front engine nut, or a sprocket which fits onto the starter motor hole so you can turn the engine with a spanner, or just use a screwdriver to lever the engine over.
And therein lies the problem....! She'd picked up on number one so there was no way of doing that. Anyway, it's been fully rebuilt now so should soon be fitting it back in.
Oooh, never played with the powershift one, only the huge leyland back end. I worked for some guys and they had us put the truck engine in it, the one without balancer shafts. It was like a 7 ton whacker plate :D
I’m back again :o) Reminded of taking out the floor plates, lifting out that big bell housing top and sliding back the input coupling. Also, pulling the starter motor because one of the four main bolts is under there (assuming it had it, most never got put back in) And the absolute black mess that it was all covered in :o
good man see what ya can do it would be nice to know. hope it all goes well and it will be nice to see her on the road again. thanks a mill. and don't worry about them people who hates every thing someone else does. do your own thing and fuck them all. all the best...
great vid hopefully it won't be to bad for rebuilding and come back clean your have to pressure wash the inside before putting the engine back in take care and have a great weekend
I replaced an engine on one of these on the moors. I was only 18 at the time in 3 foot of peat. I'm sure the one I did had a manual gearbox and a crappy bmc engine same one that was in the Morris FG. I'm 65 now
Thanks for the advice We took out the leaky frost plug to day we will see when we replace it how it's working trouble isit may have heated may have done damage as their was a hiss off the engine after I turned it off it wouldn't start until it cooled down
great video looks like going be a good project sorting the jcb out do u think engine lost any power over time or will be close to when she left factory?
No doubt Robert it will have lost a lot of power over the years and have the ability of an asthmatic heavy smoker but hopefully after a full rebuild it will be back to somewhere near new(ish)
They are not that punchy they weigh a fair old bit. It depends how the horses are measured but I seem to remember the later Leylands being around 70bhp.
It was overhauled not long before it was sold Pete. If for any reason it has to be done again in the future, it's not a bad job due to the 3 component system (Engine, transmission, rear axle)
Hey! I have a 1985 3dx with a bad engine. I have gotten hold of an 1104A-44T from 2005. Do you thumb that would fit in my little machine? Best regards. August
@@LordMuck I am in South Africa and i need a gearbox for mine. unfortunately i dont have any info for the machine because the mechanic that was suposed to do gearbox repairs took the plate with all the info off and dissapeared with the gearbox.Mine is the one without the short propshaft. any idea what model it can be ? Hey everyone, my 3c starts then dies, what's my options is it a total rebuild or something more simple, I use it for tinkering around, any advice appreciated. Ty!!! How do I troubleshoot it?
Right, drain your tank, swill it with diesel and look at the strainer on the end of the fuel pick up in the tank. Drain the swillings and put in fresh fuel. Put on new fuel filter.
Thought so I have a Leyland 272 tractor 1976 I rebuilt the engine a few years ago, the pistons in the jcb have the bottom rings as they idle a lot to stop oil been picked up into the bores. Loverly engine smooth, one of my liners went porous as they do. I like the channel. Rob

If you watch the earlier videos, you'll see we are already planning on doing the cab. I'm not too bothered about the paint. As long as it is mechanically sound, the paint can wait.
Hey mate, you old fruity fruit, u done a good job on getting bonnet out of way on the digger. We call fluid flywheel torque converters but at least u said that a couple times too 😎
What what old stick ! The reason I try to differentiate between T/C and Powertrain is the earlier Mk3's had a straight T/C and these were a separate unit but yes, its a torque converter transmission. Lovely old job, thanks for watching my old stick, what !

Nice job getting the engine pulled. The fun starts now on the tear down to see what needs to be done.
See what horrors it has to reveal !

I can't see the point of struggling Dan and it's much safer with two.
A good steam clean should also do wonders for the engine bay area.
I quite agree.

great vid LM Pard!! it will be sweet to get that heart overhauled in that Ole girl and see her come to life!! again and serve purpose!! my freind!!

Hi we had one or two of these JCB’s over the years
Good machines
Would you be able to tell me what year this machine is and what motor it has in it... I just bought one for about nothing but needs a motor.
Have you ever replaced the big busging for the pivot point on the back swing arm not sure of tec terms .
I've done one and it's not any harder than any other bushing
OK thanks
Hi Nice job i have the same jcb but looks for technical atelier manual

You made that look easy, guess that is what happens when you have the right tools for the job. who is the rebuilder going to be?
I'll get Simon to do it as he has all the parts.
Good video howdo u insert the core plugs my 74 jcb is throwing out water just below the manifold area thanks
Pull the old ones out, clean and then push in the new ones

Is there anything else in there that need's fixing while the engine is out, Lotta room to do it for sure..Cool Vid. Friend..Have a great day..
Yes it gives us a chance to check other bits over Cynthia.

What kind figures do u think she produce
I would say from new about 60 odd horse and currently about 3....
That be quite punchy for something as old as she is be great to Tootle around in doing odd jobs
They are not that punchy they weigh a fair old bit. It depends how the horses are measured but I seem to remember the later Leylands being around 70bhp.
Kind of a nasty job but things looked pretty easy to get to. It will be nice when it's all cleaned up and has new parts are installed.
Yes it should be much better once done that's for sure.
Love your videos got one of them myself dam tree just fell on the cab
Fabulous show 🍻cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it.
What truck you in now it's not the disco?
Would have been the Mitsubishi I reckon Gary. I have several different vehicles as well as the Disco.
I have an old machine like that. Thr water is getting in to the oil, don't think its the head gasket.
Hiab’s are a god send.
If it is a keeper would it be worth overhauling the shuttle as you are near there to removing it? Perhaps expensive if it seems OK? Good video Muck
It was overhauled not long before it was sold Pete. If for any reason it has to be done again in the future, it's not a bad job due to the 3 component system (Engine, transmission, rear axle)
reminds me of younger days, not so much back hoes but more like cars and some tractors,, I still tinker with machines but smaller ones of late.
Big or small its the same thing just a larger hammer needed !
Very good video i suppose jcb use this technology in ther fastrac tractors no wasted oil tanks and fuel tanks all built into the chassis
No, JCB went away from the Hydra-chassis and went to separate oil tanks.
Good tip on labelling tubs with removed parts in, I've often had that head scratching moment on my AEC when refitting parts months later!
They are so cheap you'd be mad not to. £1 for 5 tubs and lids and you can put several different items bolts in and just add the label.
great vid as always
Thank you Scott.
great job buddy
Well its the first part of the job Drew !
Look after yourself.
I see a jointed belt(emergency) how do you rate them?
Very useful.

@@LordMuck thanks Muck! What should I be looking for? (My first machine)
You're going to have to check bellhousing, weights, dimensions, mounts etc
@@LordMuck thanks! I will, much appreciated. And great video!
Hi There...great video by the way!....I am thinking of buying an old JCB 3C Mk3 and was wondering what to look out for ....good and bad?
Just the usual stuff, general condition, cracks, splits, play etc
you going to spec that engine up , those old girl's were all ways a bit under powered !!! Good vid
Cheers Glynn
I think a rebuild should give it a little more grunt Glynn. If you up the power too much, you only end up buggering something else.
Well that went well so far Kurt :)
Fingers crossed....
hello im loocking to buy second hand reverse gear to suit my jcb3c2.I cant fund eany.I will be werry please for eany help thanks

No, 4 cyl Leyland 4/98

Leyland 4.98

Sorry I miss spoke it’s 1976 sorry.
This engine has its own stressed sump Rob unlike the tractors ones which sit on the frame.
Any one can give me any idea to replace the belts 1978 on one the sample of this
Remove pump drive, replace belts, rejoin drive.
