It appears that dealerships don't have mechanics anymore, they have computer technicians. They just plug the diagnostics tool in your vehicle and follow instructions on what part to change. The old art of diagnosing what the problem is, is dying. I have been a victim of dealerships too. That is why I invested a lot of money buying tools and I fix my own vehicles. The time it takes me to travel to the dealership and back home, is the time I can use to educate myself how to fix my vehicles while drinking a cup of coffee.

Hi Greg another much needed video. Around this time we were coming back from Wales. We stopped for a break on the M4 and unfortunately the starter motor gave in. So we ended up towing it to a garage for a repair and went for a full service including fuel filter ( which wasn't needed as we haven't done that many miles and the van has been sitting for a long time)
Long story short. The starter motor got fixed but the service turned to be complete disaster; too much oil, too much coolant, and fuel leak at the fuel filter due to a damaged pipe (wasn't damaged before).
Now watching this video I am pretty confident I can do it all myself. So thank you.
Might want to do my breaks if your mate is up for it.
Enjoy Scotland! The Truma will keep you toasty ;)

another honest and informative video from Greg,,and for anyone with a sprinter ,again more free info that could save you time and money ,sprinters are the best but expensive when they have probs,,i have just had a lack of power problem and asumed it was turbo related fortunately my pal is a mechanic(old school, backstreet garage and 50years in the game) and he suspected the inlet manifold was the root of the problem they are plastic!!,and yes he was spot on,the gasket was shot and the manifold was split + a mounting pin was snapped off that needed drilling out and helicoiling plus , an injector with the black death and a new injector leak off pipe, gaskets filters and labour ,all in £800 inc vat,,,dread to think what it would have cost at a merc dealership!!!!.goes like the proverbial now.

I was once towing a caravan from London to Lancashire in the depths of winter. Car went into limp mode on the motorway in the middle of the night. I couldn’t keep driving so called for rescue, which took three hours to arrive. We were stood out of the car (for safety, as advised) on the side of the M1, in snow at -2C temp. Then we had two changes of recovery truck as they relayed us 250 miles home.
The cause of the problem was a faulty sensor, nothing wrong with the engine itself. Cost of repair about £60.
    The joys of motoring... 😄

Hi Greg. For what it is worth. The air filter box that holds the filter will have markings on the lid that will look like "PP 30%" or "PA66 " mark. This identifies the plastic as being PP = Polypropylene and GF = Glass Filled the two = no more or less than 30% glass filled in the plastic. This adds strength and heat resistance to the plastic. The air filter housing for the inside air coming into the cab is most likely the same material.
You break fluid tank color white is most likely HDPE "High Density Polyethylene" it can resist the fluid and not break down. PP plastic will stand up to oil and other fluids around the engine. Nylon GF is very good at standing up to oil like in your filter cap. Just a little info for what it is worth. Love your videos.

Here I was, just a couple of days ago thinking, I wonder where Greg Virgoe's been? And, bam, he's back! So good to see another video from you, and so glad to see that you got the van all sorted.
Everyone needs a Mark for a friend. Mate, you did a brilliant job servicing Greg and Lou's van home. Especially the bits about the turbo solenoids and the glow plug module.
At the start of the video, the frustration was all over your face. I was talking to the screen, saying, "Greg, surely you of all people have an OBDII reader in your vehicle!" Then, bam, you remembered you had one and put it to good use. I wonder, though, why it didn't throw a code on the glow plug module, as well.

    High Greg
The first Sprinter I had, 2002 313. Did 192000 miles in three years, the only non part to be replaced was one injector. From a cold start it sounded if it was running on three cylinders, but it only did it for about 20-30 seconds. Mercedes did replace this FOC has they had done all the services from new and by that time we had another five from them. Regarding the parking brake I have had about six Volvo cars and two Mercedes with the same type of brake systems, on the Volvos with a hand brake I used to use to once a week has a foot.brake Just applying from about twenty mph to a standstill this did keep the drums clean and also held the car on a hill or with a caravan on the back. The parking brake pedal system has used by Mercedes is a bit more awkward has pedal when pushed down has to be released by a pull handle on the dash but it still keeps the drum clean and the system working. It’s surprising how many people with automatic cars never use the parking brake especially the foot operated systems. Good luck on your future trips.

Hi Greg. Ta for another excellent and helpful video.
Just wondering... While my parents were still alive I used to drive up from Germany to north Manchester frequently in my merc. Had problems once. Tried the UK dealers, same experience as you. Didn't want to know, fully booked etc. But they said use the europe wide breakdown service. Only condition was that the last service was done by a dealer and that the next one wasn't overdue. Called, gave them my details. They called me back from Germany and seemed to check on their computer systems and there was soon a really helpful RAC guy there. Diagnosed. Faults cleared. Off to the dealers for a new part (which I did have to pay for) and even fitted it for me. No other costs as I didn't have to pay for fitting... Was really impressed. Not sure if it applies to vans, but worth checking cos you did a merc service some time before you went to europe - or was that just for the cold start problem they didn't fix.

Thanks for taking the time to make another interesting video.
I had trouble with hand brake shoes and took a while to find out some aftermarket brands use normal brake lining material which is too hard and glazes up like yours did. Genuine, in my case Volvo, were much softer and worked right away.
Also had trouble with binding brakes after I used copper slip on the slide pins, this can gum up as I found smoke pouring out! Use silicone grease and it wont bind.
Hope my tips are useful, they are both hard learned.
Looking foward to the next video.
    Cheers!

Hi Greg been watching your video's with great interest love your build and have learnt a lot about building a camper the right way. I have had three new sprinter's all high roof long wheel base 313cdi from Orwell trucks tend to keep them four years at around 150k, MY 08/11/15 plate when its time to change I keep thinking of a conversion unfortunately there a bit worn. Repairing heavy plant construction equipment. Owell sales great but servicing ... a fare few problems ! (not the time or place). Great vans. Only real reliability problems with the 2011 @ 120k the boost pipe split going to the intercooler and around 135k the van stopped and would only run for a second, turned out to be the injector wiring loom earthed out on the engine. 2015 model they changed both pipe and loom. now have a Vito extra long wheel base 190cdi and when it's work time is up, thanks to you it will get converted ! 👌👍😊

Loving the videos but one little bit of advice on the sliders, don’t use copper grease. Copper grease eats rubber so therefore allowing dirt/metal to attach to the sliders which then could cause seizing to the sliding pins. This could then give you uneven brake wear. Look at discs when you’re going through a car park, if you see 50% of the disc in rust, you know it’s bad sliders. Use something called Ceratec which is silicone based. Also I work for Euro Car Parts so you need anything, let me know :o) Great advice as always!

Hi Greg, nice to see a new video from you, I hope you and Lou well. Was furloughed for 180 odd days which meant I got to finish my sprinter conversion and have got away three weekends so far. First time locally to Comberton just outside Cambridge. My van is currently in the garage for its MOT but also has a fault showing as air mass sensor which is an easy part to change but I don’t think it’s actually that, that’s at fault, we will see. Take care mate👍😃

I couldn’t get a mechanic to fix a simple fix that would have taken him half an hour, no pun intended. This was around six weeks ago while in England. I did get a fix for a different more time consuming fix while in Scotland two weeks before though. I’m back in Ireland now and need some work s done so it will be interesting to see what sort of response I get. Getting someone trustworthy is definitely the hardest part. I’m glad in many ways though that I have a good running 30 year old van. Great you got it sorted Greg 👍

Greg, where main dealer diagnostics are concerned, most seem to lack in the basics and just want to do a quick in and out. Some of the independent guys will run rings around the main dealer and cheaper to boot. This also applies to the VW group. To be honest, if I had the new parts to hand, brake pad shoes, I would have changed them anyway because it doesn't matter how much is left on the shoe, but how old are they? I would also not have sprayed the carriage bolts with copper grease, it's not a good choice for moving parts. Copper grease is ok for a static part to enable future to dismantle but tends to work in the opposite for moving parts in dissimilar metals. Googles your friend on this one. I do not take offence to being corrected.

I just use silicon grease on the sliding pins. Red rubber grease possibly will be good too as it is a vegetable oil based grease. Multi purpose grease will dry up with heat and then make the sliding pins stuck and not moving.
