If they make a movie, i want it to be the original cast, not this one. I mean, we all grew up knowing Tom as Draco, Emma as Hermione, Daniel as Harry...... it would be weird to see a completely different cast.

Ok, it doesn't make me mad that JK Rowling wants the world to be more inclusive. I think that's great. But changing characters that already have such established faces, personalities, and everything isn't the way to do it. Make new characters! Create an entirely new story with them and make people fall in love with them, too. Changing already established characters to fit a narrative just makes me so angry.

And there are black characters that are described as flushed and pale.... That doesn’t make them white. These are expressions used to describe an emotion like being shocked or surprised. Take a creative literary class. Someone can imagine Hermione as they want, be it black or white or mixed.
It's just disappointed that J.K. and Hollywood would rather change the race of a white character to black instead of just creating a new original character that is black. That little mermaid movie just infuriates me cause it isn't diversity it is just wrong and its letting little girls know the only way they are going to be represented is to change someone else's race to theirs. But then again Disney is the same company who made the only black princess a frog for 90% of her own movie so go figure.

Tickets isn't my biggest problem tbh,(the tickets in my hometown/country is cheaper) but... is it worth it to spend money in a movie that just... doesn't make sense. Tom deserves the role of Malfoy in this play. He's one of the casts that keeps the fandom alive and I like how he rides along with the fans whenever they comment HP or Malfoy references on his IG posts.

And I think I remember Rowling saying that she thought Emma was a perfect casting choice. To be honest I was a bit uncomfortable with someone else playing the beloved characters we know. And in Hermiones case someone who doesn't look anything like Emma who portrated her for so long. I am not a racist, I think all people are equal, and I wouldn't have cared even a single bit if Hermione was portrated as a dark skinned girl from the start. And I know that it isn't described in the books what Hermione exactly looked like, but I've only started reading the books after I saw the first movie, and I read everything with these actors in my mind. So to just change her skin colour makes her feel like a completely different person for me. But knowing that Emma thinks she's great makes me feel okay, if anyone knows how to play a good Hermione it's Emma.

So I will try to clear everything up one last time and keep my mouth shut after this before I make it worse. What I was worried about was wether I would be able to see these people as the same characters I'm used to seeing other people portray. And it will be more difficult if they look very different. If my grey cat all of a sudden became red I would obviously still love it, but it would feel weird because that's not what he's supposed to look like in my head, do you understand what I'm trying to say? It has nothing to do with the actress or with the race, it would be just the same if the character went from black to white for me. I also said, that now I know that Emma thinks she's a great Hermione I feel a lot better of being able to see those different people as the characters I've loved for so long. It often happens when they change the actor for a certain character in a series and it just doesn't feel the same anymore because they are not able to portray the characters the same way. My comment was never intended to be any kind of racist or rude. It's just difficult for me that they are changing the actors and in this case I can't picture her as an older version of Emma so she has to be really good to redirect my whole vision of Hermione, but I'm still very excited to see the results I hope people realize I'm not trying to come across as rude.

What the other person means is even if Hermione was black in the HP movies and they changed her to a white person it would bother him/her because we're used to that look so much so that we don't even want someone else ( this is my opinion) . My problem is not with Noma Dumezweni at all she seems very talented and well cast. My problem with The Cursed Child is that it's fundamentally wrong & has major issues with the character portrayal and plot. Let me ask some questions: In what world would Hermione Granger, muggle-born founder of Spew and defender of the house elves, raise and intolerant child like Rose?? That Harry Potter, the orphaned and abused child who defeated Voldemort primary with his ability to love, tell his son "there are times when I wish you weren't my son"! That Ginny Weasley, fearsome master of the bat bogey hex and the sister of Fred and George owners of Weasley Wizard Wheezes, would introduce Harry to a NO SUGAR DIET!! And the brave Cedric Diggory, who asked for a quidditch rematch in the 3rd year when he felt it was unfair that Harry was attacked by dementors would become a death eater purely because he was EMBARRASSED!? Not in a world that I want to read about no thank you.
Felt exactly the same reading it. The plot was horrible and everything/everyone felt off.. Wish I had saved my money and just left the characters where JK first intended us to.

Actually the full line is “Hermione’s white face was poking out from behind a tree” that line is said by JKR to mean that her face is white with shock describing her in an emotional state, not a description of her skin color... the only other sentence is early in book three “Harry turned to see them waving frantically at him, Ron looking very gangly, hermione very brown” but “brown” could very likely mean” tan” because the summer between 2 and 3 I’m pretty sure she goes to France on vacation and words in Britain and America often have different meanings I.e loo means toilet in Britain. Regardless I believe that it doesn’t matter it’s a play not a movie and if JKR cared about skin color she would have demanded white or black in either situation. She did not. That being said I see Hermione as white but I’m not going crazy that this particular region of the play made her black because JKR never bothered to say her skin color at all in the books
Josh Z No you are right, her “white face” was described to illustrate her fear and while it is a bit of an expression some people’s faces (like mine) can become even paler when really scared, anxious or nervous. And tbh I couldn’t really imagine anyone using that expression for a black person. Like if you have a friend who is truly black and you scared them as a prank you would never laugh and be like “haha you should have seen your face it totally turned white” 😂. I don’t think many people would use that expression for someone who is black. Also there are other implications of Hermiones skin color being AT LEAST FAIR for example when one of F&G joke telescopes punches her in the face and gives her a black eye she is described as looking like a “lopsided panda” ( because pandas are obviously white with black around their eyes, implying that her dark bruise in contrast to fair skin) . There are many other but I cannot think of them on the spot and I don’t want to say something that isn’t true. To me Hermione is white and in the books she was certainly meant to be white. However I don’t mind a black actress playing Hermione in the cursed child ( however I don’t really accept the cursed child a “canon” anyways, for me it is more on the level of a very Potter musical as far as “canon” goes 😂), if she was the best actress for the job. I don’t LOVE the race of even the hair color of a character being changed, for example I think on of Broadway’s Elsas may have had darker skin (and an according darker wig instead of Elsas signature white/blonde) and while I don’t love that, I can live with it and I imagine it is frustrating to be equally as talented and beautiful as white performers but have so little leading roles that you “look” the part for. Plus I feel like in any sort of ongoing live performance where different performers will take over the same role it is hard to keep up a perfectly consistent exact “look, so maybe it is a little different. Also I agree with you, plays are different than movies and I wouldn’t be interested in seeing anyone other than Emma Watson genuinely taking over the role of Hermione in a movie anyways. But I do feel extremely confident in saying that JK Rowling clearly intended Hermione to be white or at least have rather fair/ light skin ( so not black) in the original Harry Potter books. Also I just realized that Draco Malfoy constantly makes fun of Hermione for her “unattractive bushy hair” soo yeah that is way worse if Hermione was really supposed to have an Afro and be a small minority at Hogwarts. Also if Hermione was really supposed to have that type of hair, not just curly Caucasian hair, it’s slightly odd that JK Rowling felt so comfortable in making it clear that Hermione is instantly prettier when she „tames down her bushy hair“, like at the Yule ball or Bill and Fleur‘s wedding. The films are an adaptation of the books, the actors in the films are portraying JK's characters, they don't own them. In the books the Dursleys are blonde but are brunette in the films, Harry's eyes are green in the books and blue in the film. The book doesnt specify her race just buck teeth and bushy hair, none of which emma watson has but Noma (Hermione in the play) does in fact have.

Hermione is a fictional character so she can be embodiedas anyone. If you read the books you will know that it doesn’t even say she is white in it and that the directors only cast Hermione as a white girl because of Emma’s skill. The director of the show did the same and cast off shear talent, not her race as it never specifies in the book.She is a fictional character and , in my opinion, it is nice to see directors changing up a character instead of just giving us the same thing.

In the third book the quotes ”Ron looking incredibly freckly, Hermione, very brown both waving frantically at him.”. That is a VERY strange way to describe a black person.. in the same book it is also stated that ”Hermione’s *white* face was stickning out from behind a tree.”. The only reason Rowling loved black Hermione so much is because she realize now 20 something years later that her book weren’t politically correct enough.

The best thing about the HP films was arguably the casting. All the actors nearly BECAME their characters. That's why it hurts so much to see someone else play that role.

Ok, it doesn't make me mad that JK Rowling wants the world to be more inclusive. I think that's great. But changing characters that already have such established faces, personalities, and everything isn't the way to do it. Make new characters! Create an entirely new story with them and make people fall in love with them, too. Changing already established characters to fit a narrative just makes me so angry.

And I think I remember Rowling saying that she thought Emma was a perfect casting choice. So I think it clarifies that it’s total bs that she claims she’s black and that she always pictured her that way. Not being racist, I just don’t like retconning of already established things. I would probably act the same way if they changed Dean Thomas, Cho Chang or Kingsley the same way. If it was some sort of reboot, fine. To be honest I was a bit uncomfortable with someone else playing the beloved characters we know. And in Hermiones case someone who doesn't look anything like Emma who portrated her for so long. I am not a racist, I think all people are equal, and I wouldn't have cared even a single bit if Hermione was portrated as a dark skinned girl from the start. And I know that it isn't described in the books what Hermione exactly looked like, but I've only started reading the books after I saw the first movie, and I read everything with these actors in my mind. So to just change her skin colour makes her feel like a completely different person for me. But knowing that Emma thinks she's great makes me feel okay, if anyone knows how to play a good Hermione it's Emma.

If Harmione wasn't describe very specifically in the books that means the writed J.K can do whatever alterations she wants plus is she described the character best qualities and not physical appearance then the actress must fit the level of intelligence of the character in the book. So I will try to clear everything up one last time and keep my mouth shut after this before I make it worse. What I was worried about was wether I would be able to see these people as the same characters I'm used to seeing other people portray. And it will be more difficult if they look very different. If my grey cat all of a sudden became red I would obviously still love it, but it would feel weird because that's not what he's supposed to look like in my head, do you understand what I'm trying to say? It has nothing to do with the actress or with the race, it would be just the same if the character went from black to white for me. I also said, that now I know that Emma thinks she's a great Hermione I feel a lot better of being able to see those different people as the characters I've loved for so long. It often happens when they change the actor for a certain character in a series and it just doesn't feel the same anymore because they are not able to portray the characters the same way. My comment was never intended to be any kind of racist or rude. It's just difficult for me that they are changing the actors and in this case I can't picture her as an older version of Emma so she has to be really good to redirect my whole vision of Hermione, but I'm still very excited to see the results I hope people realize I'm not trying to come across as rude.

My problem is not with Noma Dumezweni at all she seems very talented and well cast. My problem with The Cursed Child is that it's fundamentally wrong & has major issues with the character portrayal and plot. Let me ask some questions:

I believe JK Rowling first had the Idea of a black Hermione around when this new actress was cast, clearly Hermione was never meant to be anything but White before that😂
Actually the full line is “Hermione’s white face was poking out from behind a tree” that line is said by JKR to mean that her face is white with shock describing her in an emotional state, not a description of her skin color... the only other sentence is early in book three “Harry turned to see them waving frantically at him, Ron looking very gangly, hermione very brown” but “brown” could very likely mean” tan” because the summer between 2 and 3 I’m pretty sure she goes to France on vacation and words in Britain and America often have different meanings I.e loo means toilet in Britain.
Regardless I believe that it doesn’t matter it’s a play not a movie and if JKR cared about skin color she would have demanded white or black in either situation. She did not. That being said I see Hermione as white but I’m not going crazy that this particular region of the play made her black because JKR never bothered to say her skin color at all in the books

Josh Z No you are right, her “white face” was described to illustrate her fear and while it is a bit of an expression some people’s faces (like mine) can become even paler when really scared, anxious or nervous. And tbh I couldn’t really imagine anyone using that expression for a black person.
Like if you have a friend who is truly black and you scared them as a prank you would never laugh and be like “haha you should have seen your face it totally turned white” 😂. I don’t think many people would use that expression for someone who is black. Also there are other implications of Hermiones skin color being AT LEAST FAIR for example when one of F&G joke telescopes punches her in the face and gives her a black eye she is described as looking like a “lopsided panda” ( because pandas are obviously white with black around their eyes, implying that her dark bruise in contrast to fair skin) . There are many other but I cannot think of them on the spot and I don’t want to say something that isn’t true. To me Hermione is white and in the books she was certainly meant to be white. However I don’t mind a black actress playing Hermione in the cursed child ( however I don’t really accept the cursed child a “canon” anyways, for me it is more on the level of a very Potter musical as far as “canon” goes 😂), if she was the best actress for the job. I don’t LOVE the race of even the hair color of a character being changed, for example I think on of Broadway’s Elsas may have had darker skin (and an according darker wig instead of Elsas signature white/blonde) and while I don’t love that, I can live with it and I imagine it is frustrating to be equally as talented and beautiful as white performers but have so little leading roles that you “look” the part for. Plus I feel like in any sort of ongoing live performance where different performers will take over the same role it is hard to keep up a perfectly consistent exact “look, so maybe it is a little different.
Also I agree with you, plays are different than movies and I wouldn’t be interested in seeing anyone other than Emma Watson genuinely taking over the role of Hermione in a movie anyways.
But I do feel extremely confident in saying that JK Rowling clearly intended Hermione to be white or at least have rather fair/ light skin ( so not black) in the original Harry Potter books.
Also I just realized that Draco Malfoy constantly makes fun of Hermione for her “unattractive bushy hair” soo yeah that is way worse if Hermione was really supposed to have an Afro and be a small minority at Hogwarts. Also if Hermione was really supposed to have that type of hair, not just curly Caucasian hair, it’s slightly odd that JK Rowling felt so comfortable in making it clear that Hermione is instantly prettier when she „tames down her bushy hair“, like at the Yule ball or Bill and Fleur‘s wedding. Idk that would be odd.

The films are an adaptation of the books, the actors in the films are portraying JK's characters, they don't own them. In the books the Dursleys are blonde but are brunette in the films, Harry's eyes are green in the books and blue in the film. The book doesnt specify her race just buck teeth and bushy hair, none of which emma watson has but Noma (Hermione in the play) does in fact have.
I kinda wish they picked someone who at least looked like an older version of Emma.

Hermione is a fictional character so she can be embodiedas anyone. If you read the books you will know that it doesn’t even say she is white in it and that the directors only cast Hermione as a white girl because of Emma’s skill. The director of the show did the same and cast off shear talent, not her race as it never specifies in the book.She is a fictional character and , in my opinion, it is nice to see directors changing up a character instead of just giving us the same thing.
