    I learn to mow with a mower like that when I was 6 years old . I wanted to go swimming, it cost a quarter. My dad told me to get a job, so I took the lawn mower and mow the neighbor's yard for a quarter. Best lesson I ever had. When I was 18, I had two cars, a truck, a motorcycle, and a bass boat and proud to say my parents never gave me anything, but they never stopped me from having what I could pay for. I earned it and it started with a mower like that in the late 50s.
    As I look back at it now, I mowed a section about 12 by 12, the front yard. Come to think of it, I didn't even know they had a backyard.

    When I was a kid we had a huge yard and one push mower. My dad and I used to take turns pushing that nightmare of a mower. It was an all day event. Eventually my dad broke down and bought a reel mower with a gas engine on it. What a luxury. Fast forward 60 years and now I'm hot rodding around on an even bigger property on my Husqvarna Zero turn while drinking beer. Times have changed.

    Basically, if you have a large lawn, get a gas. If you have a medium or small lawn and view cutting the grass as a chore, get a gas. If you have a medium or small lawn and enjoy maintaining your lawn, get a reel mower. A reel mower forces you to pay a lot more attention to your lawn as you need to remove sticks, debris, weeds, so you will end up with a much healthier lawn, but you will spend more time in the process.

    My kids talked me into buying these for them... promising to use it as a fitness activity... they were excited for a day or two, now they hang unused in the garage... I LOVE that they are making this improved design! The other rotary designs like those built by Scotts simply can't mow tall grass, you have to really keep up with it, this design handles taller grass.. bonus!

    Rotary blade mowers were once touted as the cleanest cut mower the choice of golf courses. I once had a self propelled gas engine rotary mower. Today's mower tears the end of the grass blade turning it brown unless you sharpen the mower blade often.

    We need permaculture areas everywhere so insect life can return and flourish in our cities. This obsession with lawns is madness. Fair play for using an ecological push mower though. It's healthy and environmental.

    i like the reel mower, on very well maintained lawns which are very flat they do a very good job. But on very bumpy thick grass the wheels can jam up fast as you push. But i still like them and it is fun

    I have one of these and it has exactly one buttpower. It has its merits, such as cutting already-short grass with little noise. Gets most of the grass cut in one pass. Long weeds will not be cut. Pick up every little twig first because this mower will stop dead in its tracks. The blades never contact metal, only grass, so they don't get dull. This is good for kids to use because it's safe, teaches them how to work, and is non threatening, and exercise.

      I have one as well and have been using it for the last 4 seasons to cut about 1/3 of an acre. It's really good on flat/even ground, but a pain if the ground is uneven with little dips. It cuts grass and broad leafs very well, but won't cut anything even slightly woody or tall, like grass seed stalks. It's also not good in high grass as you could see in the video, it grinds to a quick halt if you have it's cut height set too low. That requires you to make multiple passes, reducing the height with each pass if you like to keep your grass short or cutting more then once per week during peak growing season.
      Given it's limitations I still give it a 8/10 as it has been well used and continues to cut just as well as it did the first day I got it. My only complaint is that the height adjustment knob kept coming off of mine even after using a strap wrench to tighten it and one of the pins for the handle popped out and was lost within my first month of ownership.

    Works great! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

      I got one of these fiskars ones this year. As far as reel mowers are considered, it cuts tall grass better than any other reel mower does. I've got an old one from the 1940's, and it's tough to use, no matter what.
      I've noticed that i tend to keep better care of my lawn with the fiskars than I did with gas because it's so easy to push, and i just do sections as needed until I'm tired, without screwing with the mower. About 6,000 square feet of lawn.

    "neighbors say we are crazy"
    I noticed that many (especially older) people say that push mowers are nonsense and it can't work, but I think they are crazy, not you, they just want to make noise and show that they have nice mower. Those classic grass cutters are stupid, it needs 2 kW motor to cut something, it's heavy and it's more like smashing grass than cutting. Ofcourse this push mower is not good for everything, but when you have some not that tall grass, you can use it without some stupid noise, cables or benzin, it's actually ingenious. You can buy these with electric motor, the point is that this design is more effective and it's even more silent than classic cutters.

    memories of mowing Dad's Estate - it was 2.6 acres!! I had a variety of mowers - all 27 of them, and most were Reel, some petrol, but mostly Push. I preferred the Push ones, especially my late 40s Webb mower, which was almost too heavy to lift. Amazingly I was taunted about the Reel ones, but whatever grass was too much for the Rell mower, would also choke Dad's 16 HP tractor mower. Mowing was my exercise!!! To mow the entire block estate Manually, took more than 3 days, but ever drop of sweat.

    There is a function on the top of the Fiskars Reel mower to blow the grass out the back or blow it out the front.
    If you cut tall grass, have it blow out the back so you dont RECUT the same grass over and over and you will have a better experience.

    I used to work at a golf course mowing. I pulled a 5-reel Jacobsen gang (12'-13' wide) for the rough and we had another guy come back over the rough with a rotary mower to knock down the tails and tall areas.
    My yard is just over an acre so using a 20" reel mower would take forever and a day. A residential multi-reel gang wouldn't work either because I have 5 maple trees and two pine trees in my yard. Reel mowers don't like small sticks or pine cones.

Once he gets that lawn a little lower you won't be able to tell the difference what kind of mower was used. I have 16" Scott's reel mower and I'd bet I have the nicest lawn in my neighborhood.

I have a neighbor who mows over any hazard with an open power mower chute, which sends shrapnel flying. He never picks up debris. I go inside. These mowers are nice but they’re open so they’re very dangerous catcher make sure you’re younger kids are inside catch you almost had a problem with one kid trying to mow over another if that other kid it Lost her balance she could’ve fallen into that blades I repeat they are good mowers though just dangerous you must use caution

    • @stpierreorama
      @stpierreorama 2 года назад +1

      The bigger problem is parents who are overly cautious and prevent their kids from developing by avoiding all things that could hurt them. Humans beings are inherently anti-fragile meaning they can only grow to their full strength and potential when under a healthy amount of challenge and stress. Just like the trees will never grow big and strong without the wind and varying temperatures. A cannabis plant grows bigger buds when you snap the stems and let them heal. Today we have parents growing their kids up to be adult pu$&is. No free range childhood or unsupervised okay anymore and we wonder why the go off to college and demand safe spaces when confronted with opinions and ideas they don't like.
      I have this mower and the blades are not very sharp and probably wouldn't hurt anyone unless you purposefully tried. The part where the blade grinds against the metal is underneath and hard to make contact with. This wouldn't hurt anyone unless you stuck your hand in there and then had someone push it hard

      bignoobs yeah, I bet your kids sit inside on the Xbox or iPad. Meanwhile, these kids are learning to take pride in something, they are learning about work, they will learn about time scheduling and time management - when they have to mow and allowing time to mow., They will learn about tooling and maintenance, they will learn to save pocket money, they will learn about spending money, they will learn about pride when they look back at what they completed. They are outdoors, exercising and contributing to the family, and if they hurt themselves they will learn about workplace health and safety.....
      Now quick. Your child’s iPad is going flat, put it back on charge before he has an ADD mental flip and throws it at mum or sets himself.

      It's really easy to sharpen them. slap some polishing compound on the blades and spin them for a bit, or push it up and down the road a little bit. Do that once or twice a year and you are good.

    • @Dr_Xyzt
      @Dr_Xyzt 5 лет назад

      The Fiskars one is the easiest one to push. The blades are geared to leave a slight diagonal cut mark in the lawn, which is what makes them easier to push. If you get a good rhythm going, you can make a cool pattern on your lawn. The Scott's ones are the best version of the old style, but different blade speed.
      The old ones from the 1940's are sped-up 5-6 times as fast, which is what made them so hard to use.
