- Doc reviews his choice for a push reel lawn mower. You can see the info here: www.howtowithdoc.com/best-pus...
Doc tested this reel mower both in wet and dry lawn conditions with great results. This is his review of the 2019 push lawn mower. Хобби
It takes a lot longer, but you can't argue with the results. plus, you can mow at 7AM on a Saturday and not wake anyone up ! :D
I have the same model, going on the 2nd season of use. Awesome reel mower!! You throw the grass forward when you don't want it thrown on your feet or when you use the grass catcher to catch the clippings.
I can't even explain how much I love my reel mower. I just mowed my front and back yard and it has been raining the last couple of days.
I have this reel mower and love it. The reason for the forward throw option is if you have installed the optional bag catch assembly. It mounts on the front.
Throwing the grass in front of you allows the mower to chop up that grass even finer/smaller which can be especially beneficial if you're cutting a longer lawn. By throwing the grass in front of you the mower will ride over it again and chop it up finer. The finer the grass clippings, the faster it will be able to break down.
Another good review Doc - thank you! Just picked up the Fiskars StaySharp Max (3 Year Limited Warrantee) and couldn't be happier. Blade rotation based on bicycle chain technology enables the cylindrical blades to freewheel. I also used the No. 3 holes (5 options) for the handle mount. Sharpness is awesome. Easy to push. Would buy it again. Keep up the great work!!
the production of this video is way higher than i ever expected. drone footage was awesome
I picked up two old reel-mowers at yard-sales. Mostly for the novelty of it. Completely impractical for my rural home lawn of 3.5 acres on rough, lumpy ground, with wild grass. But I did take one to one of the small properties I take care of, (about 30 X 60 feet) and it cut beautifully. A little heavy, and hard to push, but I still gave it a go. Years ago, someone dug out the basement a bit bigger and left the mound of dirt right in the middle of the lawn. Over the years, that mound has smoothed out, and grown over with grass, and has since become a rather large bulge in the lawn, about 3 feet high, and about 10 to 12 feet round. The reel mower had no problems with it. The only problem was me. My lack of physical stamina and a bad leg resulted in it being used on that lawn only twice. That property just recently sold, and now then new owners mow it themselves. My two reel mowers have been sitting in the shed. I might go out, and oil 'em up and give 'em a few spins.
I got this exact mower a month or so ago and never looked back....it's awesome!
they should be self sharpening blades. just spray them with some kind of light lubricant like 3-in-one oil every once in a while. about once every other month. to keep them from rusting and keep them lasting and sharp. and dont mow when its really wet and soggy if you can help it.
There is a grass catcher available for the mower that attaches to the front as well which is why it is able to throw grass clippings forward.
I bought a hydrophobic spray and sprayed my mower with it before I started using it. It collects less debris and rinses easily
I've used this same mower for a few seasons on my bermuda. You can modify it to go a step lower. I think there is a youtube video on how to do it. One issue cutting that low, though, is getting chop marks due to the rotation speed of the blades and the lateral speed of pushing the mower.
Self propelled reel mower but you're right, that's a crap ton of sqft. Good excercise!
Man, you got a beautiful lawn.
I had this one and returned it. It was great till I had to turn. My yard is smaller and while I loved the cut, it was just a beast to man handle when I had to make turns.
I just bought a used Fiskars mower. The mower does everything it says and I actually have fun mowing my lawn. It is relaxing hearing the blades just clicking and cutting grass. Some new techniques I am learning (like giving a quick push near an edge and letting the blades keep spinning to cut the grass near a driveway, etc.). I tried some other reel mowers, one was crap, one worked well but the wheels on the outside of the blades kept flattening the grass so I couldn't mow it. The Fiskars inside wheel design prevents that AND lets you get right up to the edge of you flower beds, etc. A great mower that I believe will end up replacing my Honda gas mower.
Does it cut flexible and tall weed?
I have the old model..I would love to have the option of putting the clippings backward. The forward setting only of the old one was one of the things I hated the most about it. With the clippings going back in front it would get the mower stuck due to all the grass it was cutting in thick sections.
I have one. It's great.
Living in the desert you can mow at 5 in the morning while it's cool and the neighbors won't hear a thing.
Also, when done, you don't smell like exhaust.
Welcome to the Reel World of cutting! I was on the fence of staying w/ my Rotary or changing over to a Reel! I went & bought a manual Reel, the cut was far more superior & that made my mind up to buy a Motorized Reel... So now I joined the Reel World myself & my bermuda is now setting at .50" HOC
What brand are you using to cut at .50"? The Fiskar claims 1" Thanks!
Great video your lawn look great👍🏼👍🏼.
The older model cuts exactly the same...only difference is with the newer model you get a bit of a wider cut...
Great work man👍🏼👍🏼
I remember when I was like 8 years old, the neighbor was having a garage sale, and I walked over there and he had a manual reel mower that was old and a very simple reel mower. He didn’t want very much for it, so I asked my mom for the money to buy it and she gave me the money. I thought it was the coolest mower that I had ever seen, but every time the grass would start getting tall, the neighbor would see me out there and get his mower out and start mowing our lawn while I was trying to. We were renting the house from him and he always mowed the lawn, but I was always excited to go mow with it and he would just come out of nowhere and mow our lawn and I never got to use the mower.
Trolling you hard lol
Lol. He probably thought he was helping but he was taking hour fun away. Hehe
At the very least, it now allows you to vary your mowing pattern. I would imagine that throwing the grass out front would allow some mulching action as it would sit on top of the blades of grass about to be cut.
Thanks for all the videos. Happy Easter from Dumont, NJ.
happy sunday from norwood nj
He reminds me of the neighbor on the other side of the fence in Home Improvement.
Wilson!
Wilson...
😄😄😄
I received my fiskars reel mower the past weekend from Amazon and was excited. I put the mower together which was easy only to find out it would not adjust to the 1” height. The lever would not go to 1 inch. I inspected it etc. Guess whoever put it together didn’t do a good job. I sent it back to Amazon.
Love the drone footage.
I bought the Fiskars reel mower for my North Georgia bermuda lawn but just couldn't handle pushing it over all 3/4 acre. Sold it for $30 and bought a Honda self propelled. There's a fine balance between "perfect" and "manageable" :)
Throws forward because theres a bag attachment sold separately. Athough it doesnt mulch, it also seems to spread the clippings a little better when it throws it forward. I've had it for three years now, but stopped using it because I have an uneven lawn and a lot of old trees that drops sticks.
Hey Doc . What setting/height are mowing at . I have the same model , I try to mow at the lowest setting and it’s difficult to cut through thick Bermuda/rye mix . We’re in June and my rye hasn’t gone dormant 😡.
The lowest setting is supposed to be 1 inch but scalps really bad
Electric (battery) Reel mowers are self-propelled, and they allow you change cartridges for detach, verticut and others things.
Oh, almost forgot to ask. Some of the tips on the top of my Centipede grass are a reddish- purple like Doc alluded to. Anyone know why?
Hey doc, can you talk more on treating compacted soil?
I have one. I have far less grass. My problem is it catches wood mulch from the edge. If it had an extra gear, I could pull it back and it would release the piece of wood.
Your yard looks fantastic.. my problem i have is that i live in western ny and it is next to impossible to get a nice flat lawn. which is what you kind of need to use that mower. everyone here uses a roller and to me that doesnt seem to work either. i have been trying everything on the lawn to level it out, now im using a mixture of dirt and sand to try and level out where the ground clumps up. hopefully i can get to the point where i can use one of those REEL mowers.
Thanks Doc for this review. I have been considering a reel mower myself for the same reasons you brought up. One question I have about this reel mower relates to the blades. What is the best way to sharpen the blades?. I am sure the blades will not stay sharp forever.
I appreciate all your videos and the lovely Easter collar your dogs were wearing...ha ha!!!
I've seen people turn the ejection panel to the front when using the grass catcher attachment. No idea if that's best practice or not.
You’d throw it forward into the bagger attachment.
Most reel mowers throw clipping forward into the bag
Great video review. I remember using one when I was growing up. 😁👍
Your front lawn is approximately six times the size of my 'main' lawn. Lot sizes in the US are so much larger than the UK. Good video, thanks for sharing.
Lot sizes depend on the area, neighborhood, amount one can spend on a lot, whether it's in the city, suburbs, country area, and more. It's not the same everywhere even in my city. Some people have only a few square yards of grass if any. Some have a little more. Some have less than 1/2 acre which is still a descent size if you're lucky. It all depends....
Used to push one of those around back in 1962. Then we moved up in the world and got us a Lawnboy !
Back then those old manual push mowers weighed a LOT. Never thought I'd be considering one of them now. Is the five blade a lot better than the four blade? I gotta have the easiest one to push.
..
I believe tossing the clippings forwards allows for further mulching.
Good video Doc I have the same push one just a little bit older one and it’s good exercise!
7:46 If you are pulling your mower for some reason. Throw the grass opposite way. U could have attachments like for your waist and workout while u work.
You heard it here. This mower comes with its own soundtrack.
I have a mower problem, but want to try one of these in the next couple years. It'd be sweet if they'd use a grooved roller in front instead of the wheels.
How do you keep the Bermuda out of your garden area?
I had sod laid(Bermuda) it took great. Sprinkler system set properly. One night early September this year came a really cold couple nights. Following that my beautiful grass turned brown:( also showed up a bunch of worm (not army worms though) the worms/caterpillars paste 3 days. The bird came in ate them one day. Now 100%gone. At first I almost over reacted and applied poison thinking these where army worms. What do you think made my beautiful lawn turn brown? There is still green. It looks like it went into dormancy. Thanks! I had bought one of these mowers. So sad when I couldn’t use it.
What might be a good weed killer for Sandburrs? Is it to late for pre emergent? I’m in central Oklahoma.
I liked using a manual reel mower when I was a kid but I prefer using my Honda mower now.
awesome review doc!
Throwing the grass in front offers an opportunity for some mulching action.
That and similar models may have a catcher.
Was going to say the same thing. I do know this one has an optional grass catcher for about $40. Fiskars is proud of this product (i.e. expensive) but go out and look at all reviews of reel mowers and this one almost always comes in first. I am still on the fence about getting one but if I do, I think I will splurge and go with this model. Still cheaper than a new gas mower.
Reel mowers don't mulch by their nature. They only cut STANDING grass for the most part. The front throw is done for the catcher attachment, but otherwise aim out back.
@@HowTowithDoc doesn't hurt to throw in front as a chance to cut it smaller
@@HowTowithDoc Thank you. Good to know and it makes sense!
superb video, you went above and beyond. i subbed.
Is this the staysharp max?what's the model number on this. From my country I'm unable to access the links Doc posts for some reason. Can anyone help,I'm very interested in this reel mower.
I borrowed the older version before buying the newest version. The older one does not have the option to read discharge but I use the bag option so that was not a big deal to me. The older one does not seem as well built but I do not know if my friend had done any upkeep on the one I borrowed so I think it was not the mower's fault it wasn't as smooth.
When you have a reel mower, usually, there are two kinds "front throw" and whatever. 60 years ago I used a Jacobson front throw mower which cut about 60 inches - a main head and two extentions that swung down when needed. WOW! What a mower. I would cut these people's lawn twice. The only problem I had was bed trimming using sheep shears; string trimmers had not been invented yet. The front throw cut much of the grass twice - no thatch.
Your camera work is amazing
don’t forget to lube your reel mower often. and store in a dry place. the blade need optimum sharpness for cutting well. surface rust will make it dull.
That yard is immaculate.
I'm looking into buying it. Grass looks awesome
Cool video, what type of trees are those bushy ones in the background?
wondering how you will do it with 15-20 cm grass :)
is it not chopping the grass with the blade against a bar? it looks like the blades dont contact anything. Also I would guess the front throwing would be a bagging with an attachment
So what happens to the clippings? Must have missed what you did with it...
Good for you doc ! Bought mine last year from Home Depot. Popular mechanics gave it best mower award. Get that heart rate up so you can keep making those enjoyable videos. Bought mine cause I was fat, old, out of shape and figured I was saving the planet and my George Washington’s for my kids instead of big oil companies. Lol cuts great too.
Hi, I’m in the uk, do you reckon using a manual reel at 3 inch is too high ?
Ive had this mower for 2 years and love it. But I just upgraded to a trimmer. I really wish it had a setting between the lowest and the 2nd. the 2nd is too long for my liking and the lowest is too hard to push.
You keep your lawn very short and it looks fabulous!!
Hey Doc, who's controlling the drone for the aerial shots while you're mowing? Great footage!!
i bought this yesterday for 30$ used but looks like a new :) very usefull thanks for recomendations. Can u make video how to calibrate blades ?
Do you still use this reel mower? I have not seen it in recent videos. You went with the motorized reels and not sure if this tool is still practical. I'm in central Texas with ~10,000 sqft yard.
Have you had issues with the handle wanting to rotate up when pushing?
What type of grass do you have? I have zoysia palisades, looks very similar. Does your product work well with that type of grass?
I would think that after it rains you would adjust the cut to be higher than when the grass is wet from rains.
Doc, my guess is that you put the hood forward so the clipping get re-cut - thus mulching.
Alot of "baggers " hook up to the front of push mowers I think too.
Nice aerial footage! Can you do a vid or throw some links of your drones and cameras?
What kind of bermuda grass do you have sir??
Do you still have to use a weed whip or do you get close enough to the edges?
lawn looks better cut at this height Doc. What was the cutting height with the rider? 2 inches?
I have this exact reel mower and tried it once in the rain. My lawn never looked so bad so never again. Sometimes when it looks like rain, I run out there quick but I'll never cut it again while it's wet, it just doesn't cut the same.
I like this model (Fiskars) the inset wheels lets you cut right to the edge.
Hey Doc. I wonder if the ability to throw the grass forward is for a grass clippings attachment. I've always wanted to get a real mower, thanks for putting this together!!!
THIS^^^ I have this mower and use the catcher in the front to catch clippings when the grass is either a little too long or when there are a lot of seed heads. I have been meaning to post about it since I watched this video but life got in the way. This mower is AWESOME though. The only thing I will say is that it is much easier to use when your lawn surface is level. If you have lots of high and low spots it can be a beast to mow.
you should use a ground propelled pull behind reel mower. pull behind with your garden tractor. there are several makes and models by Toro, jacobsen, and more. the lower the cut the more blades you need, like 2' high use a 5-7 blade reel and 1' use a 9-12 blade The cut is premier.
Amazing lawn dude holy smokes is perfect just a work out but thats great deal
I have the same reel... love it.
Can you use a reel mower like this on grass in Michigan?
Can you hook up the Toro stripe system on this bad boy?
Anyone else notice the wash board effect it was creating (I saw it at the end of the video)? Doc, was that a camera angle thing or is it noticeable? I have heard in the past that hand push reel mowers leave stripes in the lawn. Not stripes like lawn striping but small stripes like a wash board.
It's because his grass is thick and it's only a 5 blade mower. He needs more blades and for it to turn faster to avoid washboarding. If you cut from multiple angles with the manual mower you can make it a little less noticable. I have one and that's what I did before I upgraded to a gas powered reel.
Ahh and now you have four reel mowers... I'm currently researching for a manual one to start out with.
Excellent, thanks for this video ❣
The reason you would throw the clippings forward is because the bag is mounted on the front for this push mower.
What type of grass do you have
On 3 minutes your dog is helping you fertilize your boarders.
😂
Using sand on lawn to make it perfectly flat? Spread sand out and brush it in?
wish I could have lawn like yours.
Pulled up the link it's not the same as yours is this the correct one?
Does this reel mower leave stripes like a rotary mower?
Please bring bag the old music from last year! Lawn looks reel nice!
Did I see some old Rhizoctonia damage in the front?
Thanks for the informative video, How to take the excess grass out from the garden after you reel mow it ?
leaf blower? Mine had 2 speeds, use the slowest if the mulch is real loose.
great video doc
