Then the third invasion dies out... but your forces keep coming... And coming... And coming... - For every one of us that falls.. TEN MORE WILL TAKE HIS PLACE!!

The various implants have to be installed at a young age, the highest a simple guardsmen can go would either be the higher echelons of the officerhood, or to be selected as a member of an inquisitor's retinue as an inquisitorial storm trooper.
The Imperial Gaurd: a bunch of average-Joes some not over 14 years, old fighting monsters, aliens, giant Bug freaks and undead robot Pirates, sometimes with nothing more than a lasegun.... to protect their homes and family. I respect you Gaurdmen!
The imperium would be gone in months at the most without the guard in a never ending battle to keep humanity safe. We are under constant attack, yet the imperium is still around doesn't that say a lot, that the guard is winning most of those battles and that we loose more worlds than we gain because we are attacked from all sides. The imperial guard is a force to be reckoned with and if we were losing most of our battles the imperium would be getting very small very fast.
whether your playing the table top version or the dawn of war ver, there's nothing quite like the imperial guard for holding the line with massed ranks, tanks, and most impressively long range artillery basilisks. as long as your carefull, or have heavy back up you can grind almost anything to pulp. On the subject of Gaunt's Ghosts I usualy think of them as less regular army and more like modern day marines with there think outside the box mentality.
target practice? when hot artillery fire rain down upon you, when our war machines flatten out your heretics, when our supreme fire power over whelms your strongest Daemon, we are the ones in the end who yell TARGET PRACTICE!
My Crimson Fists Astartes often fight alongside the troops of my friends 3rd Cadia-Regiment, and they do fit pretty well. We all serve the one and only rightous Emperor Progenitor, and may all our enemys fall to ashes.
@CoreMarine Actually Ogryns and Ratlings are examples of so-called 'abhuman' species, humans who have lived on low/high gravity worlds and evolved to fit the environment. They are tolerated since they fill important roles in the Imperial Guard, but there are other 'abhuman' speices that have been destroyed by the inquisition for various reasons such as dangerous psychic abilities.

The only outdate gear that i seem to notice are the tanks that dont have sloped armour.While most of the infantry gear seems like it was late coldwar period if anything.
It all depends on the regiment in question really. What you saw most probablly was the Krieg company which has wepons that look like they are from WW1 actually gassmasks and all.

You are right, but in Dark Apostle for example the 133rd Elysians fight with (relative) success against a host of Word Bearers of more than 1000 marines

The wierd thing is the imperium wants to keep chaos a secret from the guardsmen any IG that knows about chaos is executed unless they have special permission from the space marines
@ma82fo Given what I've seen of the Imperial StarFleet, while its dreadnoughts are heavily armed and armoured they have several serious design flaws....they are primarily broadside armoured vessels with one (or rarely two) spinal mounts. Meaning you must turn the ship to aim the weapons. My fleet would be comprised of more modern vessels with turreted weaponry. Fewer guns, but able to outgun the Imperium by bringing more weapons to bear in a given direction....
Is that a storm trooper at 2. 40 with an assault cannon strapped to his arm if so what the hell i thought only terminators had assault cannons as personal weapons
