- Philip Bono's impressive single-stage-to-orbit design from the 1960s, the "Hyperion," captivated the aerospace industry with its innovative features. This remarkable vehicle, equipped with a plug-nozzle engine for ascent and re-entry heat shield, was capable of transporting 18,100 kg of payload or up to 110 passengers to orbit in just 45 minutes, or to any point on earth.
One unique aspect of the Hyperion was its launch method - a horizontal takeoff and vertical landing (HTVL) sled that provided a 300 m/s boost to the vehicle before it ascended to orbit. The sled was 3 km long with a straight course followed by a 1 km ascent up a mountainside, providing a 3 G acceleration.
This sled launch mode not only reduced the SSTO's dry mass, but it also made the Hyperion fully reusable, ideal for flights from inland sites, where fuel tanks wouldn't have to be dropped during flight. The Hyperion traveled at an astonishing 1100 km/h as it left the sled at the end of the 3 km launch rail.
However, the Hyperion's launch system required a 1.7 km high mountain, which made Douglas, the manufacturer, view the concept mainly as an experimental vehicle. Despite this, Douglas projected the cost to develop the Hyperion at $1.5 billion ($8 billion in 1999 economic conditions), with a cost per seat of $3000, or $15000-16000 in 1999.
In conclusion, Philip Bono's Hyperion design was a groundbreaking creation in the aerospace industry, showcasing the possibilities of a single-stage-to-orbit vehicle with unique takeoff and landing capabilities. Although it was viewed as experimental, the Hyperion remains a remarkable achievement in the history of space exploration.

A sled powered by 2 or 3 solid fuel rockets, and the rocket itself is a 2 part body. The base of the cone is a fuselage with loads of thrusters. The top bit would be the control module and stabilizers.

If you've ever actually looked at a rocket, you'd recognise that around 15% of launch weight is the structure, only 1%-5% is payload, and the rest is fuel. That's why rockets are rocket-shaped - it's to hold the humongous levels of fuel required to reach the minimum of 17,000 kph you need to do anything useful.
Let's be more than generous and assume that the launch sled can reach 1000 kph of vertical speed - this still means sweet FA in terms of achieving orbital or escape velocities. So the fact that this proposed design doesn't appear to have any space for fuel is a teensy, weensy problem...

I had the same idea and I think is actually the future of space travel. BUT the rails should be working as a rail gun. The sled can release the rocket at the peak and just builda slow down part where it will simply slowly stop, return and be ready for the next catapult. This technology can easily launch a rocket every few minutes!

No last minute abort on this one… if an engine fails to ignite you’ve already reached the speed of no return!
If rocket fails to start The capsule carrying astronauts in the air can still come safely down by opening up emergency parachutes.
Speed of no return is >11.186 kps.
Unless a significant number of engines don't start, it will have enough thrust to keep climbing for quite a while even if it wont get into orbit. If somehow all the main engines failed to ignite than the speed from the sled is likely enough to keep it airborne long enough to deploy chutes.

@@montewall5813 I don't think you understand how the physics of G forces work. There are ways to experience G forces other than gravitational acceleration.
You would experience 1/6th of earths G, standing on the surface of the moon.
@paulbuswell6566 G-force (gravitational force) on the moon while accelerating is less than on earth. Since it takes less even to leave the moons surface than earths. Hint the moon lander needed less thrust to leave the moon than a rocket to leave earth. Also the earth's atmosphere plays a crucial role that cause drag that the moon didn't have. So that requires less g force to leave the moon.

I have to imagine that change from horizontal to almost vertical would include g-forces that would be extremely harsh on the human anatomy. On the other hand, if this is a test for a future launch system that does not include passengers, it would work fairly well, I suspect. I wonder if this system would work even better if performed on an arc whereby the vehicle was aimed downhill first, allowing for a slight gravity boost before arcing up to the release point.

The kids TV show Fireball XL5 did exactly this in the early 1960’s. This was like a flashback. Nothing new. I suspect the animator had seen it. If the rocket sled was launching space X Starship you’d basically be watching the opening of the show.

If I recall correctly what they want to do, it is to get all initial speed from the rail gun. After it gets to approximately orbital velocity, it is at the top of the mountain. Almost no fuel used up to that point

i think the idea is that the sled picks up the fuel that is stored in the trough. think of those rocked sleds being slowed down by displacing lots of water.
i have 0 info if thats what they want to show off, but i had the same idea a couple years ago and its consistent with the animation. (notice the two spherical tanks next to the start position)

I am also reminded of the title sequence of the video game Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, in which the player characters are sent into space via sled-launched rocket. Made by a corporation called Hyperion.

Не плохая постонова. Надо было только добавить пыли в сообветствий с разгоном и толчок при включения основной ступени. Ну и в конце концов как он падает. Так как вы забыли что при отрыве телеги образуется корман на меньшего сопротивления плюс гравитация дают наклон в 7 градусов. Дальше в плот ных слоях атмосферы идёт движения воздуха в виде ветра силой до 40 метров в секунду и при отсутствии вращения корпуса и стабилизационных крыльев лететь ему не долго. Ну и главное с таким баком при удаче можно долететь только до стратосыеры.
Проще по спирали разогнать.

Exactly what I was thinking! The way that thing is cranking out thrust, compared to the overall size, even if the entire thing was a fuel tank and engines, it would probably run out of fuel halfway down the sled track at best!

Wait. They made a movie out of it? I tried to read the book but it just sort of felt like the author wanted you to know he was smart, instead of just writing a good story. I couldn’t make it passed the first chapter. His writing was just too pretentious. However I am really interested in the story . Just not the authors version of it.

There were two authors of the book…and its sequel, “After Worlds Collide”. Look it up on Wikipedia. It gives the synopsis of both …spoiler alert, though. I would advise don’t read the synopsis if you plan to read the sequel. Looks like it should be worthwhile. Just read it…assuming a copy can be found. …yeah, they can be bought, even audiobooks of them.
Apparently, George Pal planned to make the movie for After Worlds Collide, too. But I guess he made Conquest of Space and it was a box office failure, and so was never able to make the sequel.
