I remember seeing this lockers footage of Matthews and Marner on their phones and checking out their stocks on their trading apps, laughing. This was during the COVID pandemic when plenty of people were losing jobs. These are two manchildren who began playing with big money before being mentally mature and they have a very faint idea of what it is to fight to earn something because they were superstars and millionaires before achieving anything. A bunch of years ago they brought in Tavares assuming he would be the leader for this team. Well, that was a big miscalculation. Tavares is a good guy I'm sure but he couldn't be leader by producing less than these two, and he wasn't quite old enough or didn't have the resume to stand up to them and straigthen them out. It's not Matthews or Marner or Nylander or even Tavares who is the problem, it's the guy who built this team through his puppet GMs. Shanahan has to go. He is the one who engineered this core.

I thought the peripheral players for Toronto played pretty well. Matthews checked out when he didn't get goal 70. I don't think he sees the value in winning in playoffs, when he is rewarded for goals in regular season. Nylander just plays his game and if it goes his way then great, if it doesn't don't expect any hard work or sacrifice. I actually sort of like that about him. His comments on the bench show he has no patience for criticism or stress during the game. Marner is a spoiled soft kid, and a waste of money. Tavares is probably the worst captain in the NHL. That's the problem with being "right fucking there." is that it prevents you from making changes that are needed. They've been "right fucking there" for 8 years now, and made it out of the 1st round exactly 1 time. That means they failed to get out of the 1st round 7 times. That is not being right there.
How many teams have we seen not enter a rebuild because they were still technically "there." when in actuality they weren't. The Rangers were techincally still there when they did their rebuild a few years ago, cos they constantly made the Playoffs more of the time, but they never made it beyond the 1st or 2nd round and they eventually said "We're not doing this again, we aren't good enough." and went into a small rebuild instead of sticking with it.

In order to do that, they need to trade/get rid of one of their top 4 stars. Otherwise there is no cap space for anyone new who is already established in the NHL, cause they will ask for a big contract, or will carry a big contract with them if they are traded to Toronto. Toronto can only count on draft picks and bottom line players who can't really make much of a difference. They tied their own hands by signing those four players long term. They had the opportunity of making a blockbuster trade not long ago on a few occasions. Clearly, it wasn't a move they even considered. This means it's not the GMs who are at fault, but the guy hiring the GMs. Brendan Shanahan, who designed this team and maintained this "core" of players since his arrival..

According to the individual stats, there is good production, even from Mitch. Of course, games arent played on paper. Nylander comes up clutch. Auston found ways to contribute even when he wasnt feeling well. Mitch has 11 G, 39 A... 50 P in 57 G. I have also heard that he does a bunch of the little things right. Its just that he doesnt come up clutch as a scorer, and its quite noticeable when he could have shot the puck for a good scoring chance but passed it instead breaking up the opportunity.
I personally put more blame on Sheldon Keefe going with Samsonov and watching him fail hard and not putting in Woll when it was obvious even to the hand who never stepped on the ice that there needed to be a change of goalie.
Now, Samsonov did play well in Game 7, but it's also been said that goalies need to be able to steal games and he definitely did not steal any game in this series.

Sure, fighting back to 3-3 is admirable, but you know, you'd probably win more series if you didn't give the opponent 3 tries in a row to eliminate you.... Beside him, he score just as much as the other 3 combined in only 4 games. They get paid to score and win games, they all get difference maker's money without any difference at all. This team needs a great goalie and a top 2 D badly. Every year Toronto meets a top goalie and its the difference in the series. Scoring more would help but having a guy who can only allow 1 or 2 and no softies is huge. Woll went toe to toe with Swayman until the glass broke..

Keefe is the longest standing interim coach after replacing Babcock. I think the Leafs will find a permanent replacement. Shanahan is also easily at risk. Tavares and Marner have one year left in their contracts, regardless of their no-trade clauses, dangle enough money to them and they will move. Especially since most teams would love to take on talented players who only have one year left in their contracts, and then be able to negotiate with them based on how well they do on their team.

Ppl… it’s the Bruins… they won a cup in recent years and added actual defense that are as talented as forwards and young. Leafs, added veterans who can’t do shit on defense. This isn’t on the forwards. Matthews, was I guess injured… no other reason why he wasn’t doing anything out there or even trying to hustle. The media has to stop asking these questions, immediately after a direct blow … let them sit with the loss for a day or so and then ask. Gives them time to reflect and not be angry in response.

That’s the play of a guy who knows he’s gettin “Paid” $11 per for the next 8 yrs😂 and Leaf fans will have to chew on it. As for Marner, waiving or being traded look at two things, Mathews career goals and how many Marner assisted on, then think about Mathews going forward. As for those thinking Domi will take that spot beside Mathews, will he also Not be a defensive liability?
