  • Sometimes we have hard times in playing mid tempos single stroke rolls with our bass drums because the speed is too slow to only use ankle motion or too fast to only use leg motion, how can we fix this issue? In this lesson we understand 3 very important points to solve this problem!

    OMG, thank the Lord for James Payne, hallelujah!! Seriously dude, you cannot imagine how long I’ve been struggling with the midtempo range and nobody had any good advice! Yours is the FIRST video that actually really helped me and made me feel like I’m not the only one out there who had this problem to overcome! Five star video!

    Drumming is one thing, but teaching drums so clearly and effectively is something else! Outstanding!! Love the videos

    James's meticulous analytical approach to drumming is amazing!
    To the topic: that's why it is important to always practice not only 200+ bpm stuff but also between 130-200 at every practice session, with that you can avoid struggling at these tempos.

      Super glad you like my approach man! And yes, working at different speeds often is a great gym for all the motions our legs and ankles have to do for sure, I agree!

    That's insane!!! Once more you put out a video which deals with the exact problem that made me go wild and frustrated a lot! I could not understand why I suddenly wasn't able anymore t play double bass at 150 bpm, which was not more than a joke 10 years ago. Your explanations are awesome because our body only executes what our brain has understood. Thank you again for tidying up the mess in my head

    you know something...it needs more balls to play loud and steady in 140-180 than 250-300

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 лет назад +9

      They are just 2 different things, of course my point in this video wasn't about playing loud, but controlling certain speeds. Once you control them, you can do whatever you want, play loud, soft etc... but all that without control it'll be like big balls bouncing randomly, and it won't be cool :)

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 лет назад +3

      Yeah man, my reply wasn't in a bad way. I like loud drummers too, I always admire whoever has good dynamic at the speeds they play at, of course 260 is different from 150, as you said. But I like who at 260 can play as loud as possible rather than soft and only with triggers

      @@JamesPayneDrums and i want to ask your opinion in something. Do you think that the double bass drumming has something to do with talent?I mean special skills?To be someone better in feet than in hands etc?Or it is just matter of practise?How is it possible for example, a guy that plays 2-3 years and is 18-19 years old to be fast?

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 лет назад +5

      Exactly, Derek is a great example, he's been one of my inspirations for extreme drumming!!
      This is a great question, but also a long one ahah. So, I don't believe in talent, if we do the right things we can all get to a good level at something, unless we don't have a specific issue that doesn't allow us to. With this said, it is possible that some people, because of how they are phisycally etc... have less difficulty in learning something rather than something else, but that depends on many aspects, like your experience in the past, the lenght of your arms or legs etc... but I would say if you tske 10 people and make them do the right things for the same amount of time, they can all get to 7/10 and then maybe someone will make it to 8/10 or 9/10, but it won't happen that one person gets 0 and one gets 10, because our brain and body work in a specific way, and it's been proved by science,.It's like saying is it possible that some people can read and some don't? If they all study, they all will. I hope this makes sense ahah.

    Thanks for this video, man.
    This subject, though slightly different, is perfect for me, as I'm still a beginner on the double pedal. I've been playing for a long time, but I still do not see my progress happening. My limit, unfortunately, is 130bpm. Sometimes it progresses, sometimes it is over. And although your videos are always extreme speeds, I follow your work.
    Maybe something or some technique will help me to "cross this speed barrier" and advance on the double pedal. Would you have any tips? Do not bother offering me your products, ehehe.
    (sorry, is not my first language)

    • @JamesPayneDrums

      Hey man, glad you liked the video! I have many videos about foot technique on my channel, I would just suggest to check them out as I always try to do them in a way that people at any level can find inputs to overcome their issues. To give you a specific advice I would need to see what you are doing and then create a routine that works for you. But the main things are always, check balance, check ankle motions and check ankle motions applied on the pedals. If one of these things is not working, then that's what causing the issues. If you want a more in depth advice on your problem hit me up on jamespaynew@gmail.com

    Great information here ! Well done ! I wanted to ask since you play iron cobras too, do you have any advice on how to tighten the foot board to the heel plate ? I’ve tightened all the available screws and bolts underneath but can’t get rid of the play still ... with your playing I imagine you’ve ran into this problem before .. thanks James !

    I your experience, brother, what is the max, BPM, to still produce 75 percent of the full dynamics of the basedrum, (assuming 100 percent , being a adequate full hit but not so much that it causes premature kick head failures )? 😉

    Nice video! But if we loose spring tension it would be hard to play at faster tempo like 220-240bpm or more?

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 лет назад

      It depends on the approach that you have on the pedal, for instance, I don't have the spring tension to the max, and am still able to play 260/270 for the approach that I have. But anyway, what I was suggesting in the video was to try to find a comfortable spot at those speeds with your spring tension by moving the feet up and down on the pedal boards, if you still can't find it, then the other way would be adjusting the spring tension.

    Hello everyone.
    I got a problem when it comes to ankle motion :my right foot will interrupt the beater swing by tensing up every two hits. It happens only when playing with both feets. It happens mostly around 155/160 bpm.
    I'm working from 90bpm up to 170 but my foot problem wont let me play smoothly at 170.
    I do a lot of warm up and slow singles but it doesnt seems to help me a lot.
    Any help is greatly welcome...

    I can't play 130-150 BPM. I think it's because of my pedal (pearl demonator) or is it possible to play it with this pedal? Anyone who had experiences with this?

      Drumbeater Bass
      Wheres your foot placement? I find it helps me during those speeds to bring my positioning back towards the start of the pedal.

    • @JamesPayneDrums
      @JamesPayneDrums  5 лет назад

      I don't think the pedal itself doesn't allow you to play at those speeds, maybe it's because of the settings, or something wrong that you are doing! Try to go in a music store and play those speeds on other pedals and see what happens, if you can, then look at the settings and see if you can set your pedals the same way, if you cant then there's something you have to work on :)
