I am thinking of buying a Merkur Progress Short Handle, when you remove the top head of that Razor, you see the metal bar that has 3 holes, can that be removed for cleaning the razor, Jock Stewart from Glasgow - Scotland

I disassemble the inner tube, as well.:) I swab it out, etc. You may want to give the Parker Variant a look.:) The handle is a bit longer and the knurling allows for a nice grip. Plus, it has more heft than the short -handled Progress (I'm not sure how the Variant stacks up to the long-handled Progress). My review of the Parker Variant: ruclips.net/video/uKX3-aEJvvc/видео.html
I like them both, but the Variant sure surprised me.:)

Is there any blade overhang? Are razor blade tabs completely covered like the Vikings Chieftan? Thanks Mark!

There is some. How Much? I'll have to actually pop in a blade and take a look.:)

I belive the Progress is a very good razor. It gets good critics almost anywhere. Dovo/Merkur is well known for its quality products.
Generally I prefer medium-long or long handles, so I might find this one to be on the shorter side. And I don't know yet, if I would like this plastic dial. Does it not somehow devaluate this brass/chrome razor?

Patrick, all good points. Handle length certainly is personal preference. The Progress comes in a long handled version. I like the length of the standard handle. If you used a Vintage Gillette Super Speed, that handle is no more longer the the Merkur 34C's handle. The standard Progress is just a bit longer than either of those. The larger diameter of the handle perhaps makes up for the length.
The plastic knob is kinda cool.:) I'm told it's a design used in older German autos...buttons and switches on the dashboards. Google 356 Sportster dashboard and you should get some pics showing this. It's also a throwback to the original 1955 Progress. (Info I received from guys on B&B).
Some guys modify the knob. They replace it with a chromed knob. There's a small cottage industry where guys actually sell these knobs so you can retrofit your Progress.

Interesting details, Mark. You are right, a thicker handle makes up some length. I also like heavier razors, like the Progress seems to be. These differences from one razor to another are often just a matter of personal taste. After many years of wet shaving you can get along fine with almost every razor, I guess. Some have a learning curve, though.
This plastic dial really brings back memories of my childhood in the 60's. This kind of plastic and Bakelite were used almost everywhere, they were so popular. I remember knobs of old radios, vinyl-disk players, our first tv, dashboards and plenty of other things. In this sense it is definitely vintage and I definitely like it.

Patrick, yes, I agree. The plastic knob is a throwback. When I first received the razor, I thought I might replace the knob with a chromed version. Then, after using a few times, it really grew on me. For one thing, it give a rather firm grip when adjusting (when your hands might be a bit wet), and it helps the razor stand out. I have several razors in a drawer neatly lined up (okay, sometimes, they get shifted around a bit:))and can always find the Progress simply by looking for the knob.;)
