When we listen to our ballad singers, we realize there is not such a big gap in our lives between all of us human spirits. Love, from an old (60's) white woman from Ferguson. He had me crying then, he still works that magic. When the SAX plays in a Joel song, he is pulling your heartstrings.
I've been fortunate to have seen Billy 6 times throughout the years in Pittsburgh. My ex-husband's cousin was a dancer on broadway, and was chosen to dance the lead as 'Brenda' in the Billy Joel musical 'Movin Out'. It was fantastic!!! A live Billy Joel cover band, suspended over the stage in a long, horizontal cage, rockin it out while the dancers acted out the story of Brenda and Eddie, combined with other Joel hits like 'Goodnight Saigon', 'Movin Out', 'The Longest Time' and many more. All the songs were combined to tell the *whole* story of Brenda and Eddie. His cousin (Laurie) invited us back stage after the show, then took us to a bar where alot of the Broadway actors hung out. I met the 'Phantom', the 'Beast', and all the guys in the cover band, *AWESOME*. What a night. I took my daughter to see the touring version, and my little 8 year old lost her mind. Billy is The. Greatest. Of. All. Time.
One of Billy's greatest and I saw him give a lecture years ago out on Long Island , this was originally 2 separate songs. He was having issues with them, then he combined them, and the rest is history. I've seen him alone and with Elton, plus 2 New Years Eve Shows around 16 times and there's no one like him.
Watching your reaction all I could think was how lucky I feel to have grown up listening to Billy. I can't begin to tell you the depth of the rabbit hole. Please check out Goodnight Saigon and Innocent Man.

I have seen Billy Joel several times and this was the song that really got me to look at all his work and be a lifetime fan!….. this was back when people could write there own songs…. Play their own instruments and actually sing ….. not like today with auto tune…. One monotonous’beat’ and just foul language you actually had t write music
I don't like all of his stuff but that particular album is just full of really great material. I like every song on it. It's called, the stranger. Which is also the name of a track on it.
Billy Joel has a way of writing lyrics that would make you remember them. No matter how wordy.....you could always relate to them. Certainly one of the best!

Billy Joel is definitely a genius. He composes, arranges, plays and writes all of his material, music and lyrics. A poet and amazing pianist as well as playing multiple other instruments. Great storyteller with a huge catalogue of beautiful songs. “Piano Man” is a good one to check out. His songs will never bore you! 🌺✌️
Hi Alex! Nice choice. Not sure I'd call this a song as much as a "piece," what with all its parts all concatenated into one long story that actually makes you sad. Joel's a freak from outer space. He sings well enough to be just a singer. Same with piano, only you've actually not heard just how good he is. And he writes ALL his music and ALL his lyrics, and they're not stupid been-there-done-that love ballads, which seems to be the wont of a lot of writers. The man's an absolute genius and I love that you picked an audio version, closed your eyes, and really listened. The videos of him doing this are great too, but listening is enhanced when you JUST listen. Nice reaction! So what the heck am I talking about, "...you've actually not heard just how good he is..."? "Prelude / Angry Young Man" "Ballad of Billy the Kid" "Root Beer Rag" "Travelin' Prayer" A lot of people who don't have the albums haven't heard these, but some of his best gems have never been heard on the radio.
From what I’m reading I have a really long journey with Billy Joel 😂. I just recent bought a vinyl The Stranger but I can’t listen to it yet without you guys. So I’ll be diving in really soon. Stay tuned for more videos.

I think you'll enjoy how Joel can make an entire album on which every song has its own individual style. And the LP will have songs on it that will never be requested by most commenters. I follow a boatload of reactors and have noted most of the requests from most commenters (save a few bona-fide fans who've bought the albums) are radio hits. So again, you just went a notch above! Billy Joel is the all time master of hitting close to home! He has never made a bad song!
I found "we didn't start the fire" to be a steaming pile, but I understand if you feel differently.

The whole album is great, but this is my favorite Billy Joel song.
It's hard to pick a greatest Billy Joel song but this one certainly has to be in the running as it's right up there with Piano Man.
