I'd never heard of this beat-em' up before, so I was pleasantly surprised when I loaded it up. It's very much a clone of Final Fight, and not an especially involved one at that, but the game has a very cool gimmick in the form of destructible background layer. Hurling enemies against the back wall causes visual damage to the background, breaking down doors and shattering windows, which is more interactivity than most games in the genre were doing at the time. What's more, breaking the backdrop often results in power-up items dropping, so it's well worth taking the time to lob enemies around.
In terms of gameplay, 64th Street isn't the most engaging game in it's class - it's slow-paced, and the variety of enemies isn't particularly varied, most of which have very predictable attack patterns. However, the destructible scenery and below-average difficulty meant I actually had a pretty good time with the game; probably not something I'd play that often, but better than expected!

"I'm looking for a Private Detective for a possible workplace disability scam that I believe an employee is trying to pull - can you tell me more about your methods and procedures?"
"Well, basically, I just go in and beat the living piss out of everyone with wrenches and iron bars until the 'mystery' solves itself"

The game escalated quickly from "this is secret message!" to whack-whack beat 'em up like Streets of Rage. I expected quest/logic game at first.

12:23 - The pirate guy was just minding his own business when suddenly he got kicked right up the head. From that very moment on, he was brain-damaged and kept doing that spinny thing with that deranged vacant smile on his face, poor guy

As far as I remember game was for a long time available in mame, but emulation was incomplete and lacks background destruction effects, it was added some time ago.

This game can't be played without breaking everything in the stage by throwing the enemies into the background. This is what makes 64th Street fun. Don't @ me.

For a detective, this man spends very little time interrogating people.

4 is an unlucky number in Japan, since when spoken it sounds like the word for death. 64 = 4 x 4 x 4.
That street must be very bad business.

I enjoyed the playthrough, but these enemies seem terribly weak compared those in same, Final Fight. Who would have known so many cats were lurking in the walls of buildings and sealed crates?

Why are the enemies in this game so pathetically weak? Final Fight and Streets Of Rage had better opposition!
