Right up my alley! Can’t wait to hear you, Martin and panel’s discussions. My picks… Hard Attack - Dust - 1972 Montrose - 1973 Tyranny & Mutation- BOC ‘73 Rocks - Aerosmith 1976 Helluva Band - Angel 1976 Legs Diamond - 1977 Narita- Riot - 1978/79 Nugent - 1975 Van Halen - 1978
Bolder Dam - Mourning Riot - Narita Alice Cooper - Killer Randy Holden - Population II Bloodrock - s/t Montrose - s/t Dust - Hard Attack Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come A couple of cheats - the closest thing the US had to Black Sabbath was probably Pentagram so I'd choose their "First Daze Here" compilation. But although recorded in the 70s, it wasn't a real album and was only released decades later. And related to that, similar story - "Child of Darkness" by Bedemon. Incredibly raw, bad demo quality, but very very heavy for the time.
Alice Cooper - Black Juju, School's Out, Muscle of Love , Black Widow, Go To Hell , Killer, and Halo of Flies were all devastatingly Heavy Metal songs from 1970s USA
Truth and Janey - No Rest For The Wicked 1976, Primevil - Smokin' Bats At Comptons 1974, Mariani - Perpetuum Mobile 1970, Phafner - Overdrive 1971, D.R. Hooker - The Truth 1972.

I agree Sweet was definitely one of the Heaviest 1970s band, but they are British. Rush - Necromancer and Anthem are the Heaviest songs from the 1970s, but they are Canadian.
First time I heard it was on a compilation that had Starz, Angel, Legs Diamond, Rex, Trigger, Moxy, MAx Webster... This MARCUS album is criminally overlooked.
From heaviest on top, down to less heavy, with some comments. To get something actually heavy on list, my list includes any type of official release that has more than 3 songs. 1. Tyrant - 1978 Rehearsal 2. Pentagram - 1973 Demo 3. Manilla Road - Underground - Only at this point things start to get uncompromisingly heavy 4. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come 5. Kiss - Double Platinum - God of Thunder is very heavy song for it's time, without it Kiss wouldn't have come close to the list. Double Platinum has all the Kiss's heaviest songs of the time, and proportionally has more heavier songs than the other Kiss albums, also the versions are mostly heavier than the originals, despite Detroit Rock City being nerfed. Destroyer would make it on the list below this, but I consider that double entry in spirit. 6. Sir Lord Baltimore - Sir Lord Baltimore 7. Iron Rage - Iron Rage 1 - First (in the order of least heavy to heaviest) record on the list that's actual Heavy Metal, also equally heavy throughout, not just 1-2 heavier songs among less heavy songs like many other records. 8. Bloodrock - Bloodrock 2 - Song D.O.A. rises it to the list 9. Dead Boys - We Have Come for Your Children - Made it to the list only because of song Son of Sam, otherwise it's only slightly heavier compared to typical Hard Rock of the time. 10. Iron Butterfly - Live - Sneaked that one on the list, the heavy songs are really from the 60s. Interesting challenge, ranking below this gets much more difficult. There's either Hard Rock that's barely heavy and about as heavy compared to each other, or records that have one heavier song but the rest is not heavy at all, or records that have songs that have only some heavy parts, wimpy vocals are problem with a few records. Some of the bands that would have been close to making the list with their 60s songs had wimped-out starting from the -70 or earlier.
Martin representing in his Max Webster shirt ... NICE!!! Also, and I cannot recommend this enough, check out the compilation Warfaring Strangers: Acid Nightmares on the Numero Group label for some serious off-the-radar and one-off American bands from the early 70s doing druggy proto-metal biker rock. Has to be heard to be believed!
So I just started watching this. First time for this channel. I will subscribe to this channel ONLY if the 2nd Ram Jam album is included. That's how I will know if we're compatible. I don't see how that record could NOT be included here. I would also say Pentagram, but I guess you could say they didn't have an official release in that decade.
I Don't Have The Time from the first James Gang album, actually released in late 1969 was of the heavy style I wish they went with more....The version of Just Like That on April Wine- Live Play Loud hints at their harder approach later on.
I would say that Heaviest 1970s songs would accurately sum up the concept, considering many American bands from the 1970s had a variety of musical styles on every album. 1. Ted Nugent - Hammerdown 2. Aerosmith - Round and Round + Nobody's Fault 3. Dust - Suicide 4. Sir Lord Baltimore - Wheel of Fortune 5. Montrose - Dreamer 6. Dirty Tricks - Night Man 7. Blue Oyster Cult - 7 Screaming Diz Busters 8. Angel - Mirrors + Under Suspicion 9. KISS - She + I Want You + Parasite 10. Grand Funk Railroad - Inside Looking Out + Sin is a Good Man's Brother
1.van halen debut 2.montrose debut 3.aerosmith rocks 4.american ram jam Portrait of the Artist as a Young Ram 5.riot rock city 6.blue oyster cult secret treaties 7detective detective 8.dictators blood brothers 9.the godz debut 10.mountain flowers of evil
Since Canada is in North America, lets toss in bands such as Warpig, Thundermug, Moxy (first album has Tommy Bolin on guitar), Blue Max, Bent Wind, Mahogany Rush, A Foot In Cold Water, the first Rush album, April Wine, B.T.O., Christmas (Heritage lp), Jackal( Awake lp), Sex (first album).
Great show guys, with some excellent choices. In the UK, Sounds would tempt us with US 'heavy metal'. A lot wasn't really heavy (Molly Hatchet, Journey, REO etc) but in my view these lived up to the hype. Albums already mentioned: Van Halen - Van Halen. Montrose - Montrose Same band, different album: Aerosmith - Draw The Line. Their heaviest album IMO. Angel - On Earth ... Starz - Violation Not mentioned: Cheap Trick - Dream Police. Half the albums heavy. Title track, This House Is Rocking, Gonna Raise Hell, Writing On The Wall, I Know What I Want & Need Your Love Blackfoot - Strikes. Always the heaviest of the Southern Rock bands The Boyzz - Too Wild To Tame. A heavy Bob Seger. Black Oak Arkansas - X Rated. I know it's live but I think this is America's heaviest album of the 70s: Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo.
Hi Parish, great picks. You are right about Sounds trying to sell us US Metal. I don`t know if you have one - but I have a free double album from Sounds, I got it in 1980 ( the tracks are from the 70`s though) I think with coupons from the magazine. The albums called Killer Watts, it`s stacked with US bands many that are on your list, Aerosmith; Molly Hatchet, BOC, The Boyzz, Ray Gomez, Journey, Frank Marino, & a few European bands, Trust, Shakin` Street. Good to see you on Many shows across RUclips, you're always a good listen. All the best mate.
Great pics Gareth - I had Blackfoot Flyin High and Strikes further down my list. That had such a killer run of records from No Reservations through Siogo ! "Island of Life" may be the heaviest thing they ever recorded. Also - how great is "Too Wild to Tame" ?? That song is just pure, unadulterated, blow your speakers, get down, dirty ass, heavy rock roll !
The debut album by Dust was every bit as Heavy as the Black Sabbath debut. Hard Attack contained 2 songs that were Heavier than the debut, but nearly every song on the debut is at least Hard Rock
As complete albums Montrose - Montrose, Dirty Tricks - Dirty Tricks, Aerosmith - Draw the Line, and Ted Nugent - Free For All had the most Hard Rock songs . Steven Tyler does the most screaming Vocals on the Draw the Line album is why I chose Draw the Line
Legend are from Connecticut. I totally disagree about the vocals I think they are great and fit the music well. That album, From the Fjords, was a Viking metal album way before Viking metal, and from of all places, Connecticut. Pretty astounding.
I knew I had that wrong - thanks for correcting that ! I forgot to jot it down. Really good record so glad they finally did a proper reissue of it. It deserves to be heard and to live on.
@@ButchArgus Absolutely agree with you there! As an aside, any bass player or drummer out there should listen to this album. Both the bassist and drummer are absolutely nuts on their respective instruments.
@@LairoftheAlchemist Mountain was one of the first heavy American rock bands that paved the way for heavy rock after that. Saw them many times since the early '70's.
I wanted to include them but their heaviest is the Leslie West Mountain record and it's from 69. Blood of the Sun, Dreams of Milk and Honey, killer stuff. Climbing has Mississippi Queen and Never In My Life but the rest while really great doesn't reach that same level of heavy. Love them though and they were definitely one of the earliest US bands to really bring some heaviness into music.

No one mentioned Randy Holden- Population II which is probably in the top 3 American heaviest albums of the 70s.
