The Pentax 6x7 series of cameras are legendary in the medium format world, and for good reason. But they also have a reputation of being large, heavy, and loud. In this video, I share my thoughts on the Pentax 67ii after owning it for just over 5 months and talk about why I think certain characteristics of the camera are often over-exaggerated.

At 72, the overall weight of using the 67 system is beginning to become a noticeable burden, but I'll keep on with it for a year or two to see how that goes. I too tend to use the camera with a tripod, both for the weight management and because tripods and landscapes go well together. When circumstances prevent use of a regular tripod, I've gotten low light, slow speed shots of adequate sharpness by using a very rigid tabletop mini-tripod, bracing the combo against whatever is at hand - half-wall, doorway, etc. For a fixed subject, I also try to pre-release the mirror a second or two before the shutter to avoid any mirror vibration. That sounds cumbersome, and it can be so, but it works well with a bit of practice.
How have I missed this channel fo so long? Brilliantly presented with an objective view as possible with great images. Subscribed!
Thank you Mark!
On my Pentax 6x7, the big slap and jolt of the mirror is when it returns to its original position (you can test this by shooting it at a 1 second exposure). The shutter will have already closed by that point, so I don't really see how this could cause any motion blur.
Mine can't take a non-blurred image under 1/30... even on a tripod :D because of the slap of the mirror
@@emeraldsquare nonsense. Check your mirror foam dump. Replace it. I’ve had over 23 Pentax 67 at this point and I know what I’m talking about. That mirror vibration is a made up legend. With lenses under 200mm you don’t need mirror lock up, and no vibration that affect the image. And even then past 200mm , let’s say SMC 600mm f/4 with a good stable tripod 2.5kg you will not need for a mirror lock up.
1/30 sec is too low even for a good well balanced camera. If you are using 105 mm f/2.4 then your minimal shutter will be your focal length so 1/105sec (1/125).
To shoot at 1/30 the only way is to get 30mm lens. Even with 55mm lens you will get blurry images
@@Pentax67 really 23 Pentax 67 😱😱😱
I love the high quality of the videos - definitely one of my favorite channels out here! Can't wait for the next episode.
Cheers from Germany
Thanks John. Glad you're enjoying the vids.
I'm glad I got a chance to watch your review, Kyle and see the Peak Design in action before I ordered one. Great review! Cheers!
Thanks, Scott. It's a great strap. Hope you enjoy!
The shot of you standing in front of the tree at 3:34 was amazing. I love the colors of the leaves and the way it was swaying in the wind.
My bronica GS-1 shutter sounds like barn door slamming. :)
The art on the wall at 4:02
Outstanding presentation, Kyle! Thankyou! Back in the late 70's I started with the p67 long before the p67II came out. I have a fleet of three, both new zooms, the 55mm, 90mm LS, 105mm, 135mm "macro", 200mm LS and the 300mm. Polaroid back too. The 135mm "macro" is my favorite head and shoulders lens outdoors. I have two. I also have the 67 to K-mount adapters. Wait till you mount a 67 lens on a APS/35 mm format body. YIKES!! Beyond my dreams! Their leaf shutter lenses are a slower synch to flash process. The P67 is the Panaflex of Medium Format. No stinkin Blads, too fragile, expensive when bought and more when repaired. Mighty finicky (like Arriflex) and I don't see in squares either. The P67 is nothing short of great field cameras. When they break (the wind mechanism usually) they are an easy and cheap fix. Used them on a 10k mile road trip. Synch speeds higher than the P67 offerings were needed. I also invested in a threesome of K10d and f2.8 DA* lenses when they first came out. The zoom AF motors died within the first year. Junk motors on great glass! I went to Sigma instead. I also invested into a massive collection of RB67 Pro SD system back in the Great Analog to Digital switch in the mid 90's. Pennies to the dollar! (No stinkin' batteries needed like my Nikon F2 system.) Six fully working RB SD bodies, three parts bodies, 20 SD magazines and just about every RB accessory. I own the 55mm, 65mm, 90mm, 140mm Macro, two 150mm Soft-Focus with discs, 180mm, 360mm and two 100-200mm zooms. The zooms are my portraiture favorites using the Elinchroms. Prisms on all bodies and O'Connor cine Matte boxes on the zooms. They ride on mighty Vinten tripods topped with gear-heads and fluid heads. I like having backup for my backup gear.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Sounds like you have quite the collection of gear! The 105 will be my next purchase for this camera. Looking forward to it.
Yet another awesome video, really informative and well recorded. Photos look amazing too. Thanks for sharing man 👍👌
Thanks for watching, Aaron!
Succint, informative and well shot. In a sea of amateurs in love with the sound of their own voices, your videos really stand out as something special. Keep it up please!
Thanks Nick! Very kind of ya!
I'm convinced. I'll be buying one of these soon. Where were you when you were shooting the photos of the abandoned buildings?
More great stuff! Picked up a Contax RTS and a 50mm 1.7 to go with based on your video! Holding out on the 35-70 for a bit till I see a price I can justify. Keep up the quality videos, the production that goes into these is far ahead of most film photography channels, makes me want to come back everytime.
Thanks for watching, Patrick. And enjoy the RTS!
Truly excellent channel with great content, presented with precision, clarity and relevance. Thank you!
Thanks Charles!
This is a great channel! I just got a Pentax 645, i wish there was more movies with the camera around youtube.
Thanks! The 645 is a great camera. Enjoy!
hi Kyle, is this the latest Pentax medium format camera? And I wonder if they are still producing medium format film cameras. Thank you.
They're no longer making film cameras, unfortunately.
Great review Kyle. I bought a Pentax 67 II a couple of months ago and have really enjoyed using it so far. I completely agree that its main advantages over the RZ are its portability and ergonomics. You get the same negative with a camera that adapts to a wider range of shooting scenarios. I have really enjoyed the content of your channel. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! And happy shooting with the 67ii!
Incredible channel, excellent videos, well shot and very informative. Keep them coming please!
Thanks for watching!
Hi Kyle, thanks for this review. I've recently purchased the 67 II, also opting for the right hand-grip and the "walk about" advantage of the camera. I've carried it on trips abroad and am selling it again. Why? The exact reasons you mention: 1. Weight & 2. Shutter speeds. Walking this thing with lens and wooden grip for a few hours is excruciating. While the wood grip eases it ergonomically, the weight will be felt in your neck. Shooting the 105mm, I don't shoot below 1/250th. Maybe I could get away with 1/125th but I don't have the most steady hands. This is hugely limiting in low light. The only 6x7 camera that does not have these limitations is the Mamiya 7. I hope its reduced weight and usable slow shutter speeds will counterbalance my issues with the 67 II. Finally, and this is subjective, I am not a fan of the Pentax lenses footprint. To me, both color reproduction and micro contrast fall short of Mamiya/Zeiss. At least on the 105. I find it has a tendency towards oversaturating skin tones and that it also doesn't resolve micro detail as crisply. I've no data to back this up though. Thanks for your excellent content!
Thanks for watching, Martin, and for sharing your experience. I'm sure you'll enjoy the Mamiya 7!
Amazing video, Kyle. And beautiful pictures as always. Thanks for this one. Really enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching Ed!
Great this is exactly what I want to see in a review. Specs are easy to find I want to hear about your experience and opinion and thought process in deciding between systems. Nicely presented and well filmed too.
Thank you, Alex. Much appreciated!
thorough review and very insightful. Well done !
One of the best camera reviews. Very honest and unbiased. Do you scan your own film? If so, what scan do you use? Thanks.
Thanks, Clint! A lot of my film has been scanned at the lab, mainly on a Frontier. I do scan my own at home on an Epson flatbed V500.
I have the 6x7 earlier model and have done lots of great work using Kodak Portra 400 and Tri X.
Favourite lens 55mm f4 with the rubber grip.
I prefer to use my Zorki 4k with the 50mm Jupiter f2 lens. I use Ilford xp2 which I get processed in the c41 lab near me. They do lovely black and white prints and enlargements. The lens is Soo sharp. I have a Leningrad selenium meter to use with it.
I have sold one of my Pentax 67s with the 75mm 4.5 for £400 and am selling my other one when I get a good offer. I have enjoyed using them and have had no trouble with them.
I prefer to use the rangefinder system now my eyesight is not so good. There is a viewfinder diopter variable correction lever on the Zorki 4k which is so helpful.
neil piper - hi Neil, how much do you want for it and can you send me some pictures of it please p.foot329@btinternet.com cheers
Very underrated channel. I loved everything about the video, especially the images!
Thanks!
Excellent video Kyle, really enjoying the work you've been doing. You photographs are wonderful and your commentary insightful. I have an older version of your camera and I would say don't be afraid to handhold at 1/60...under the right circumstances, like you were shooting here where you have fairly bright light, I'd say you should be fine. Below that it is definitely tripod and/or mirror time! Thanks again Kyle, enjoying your work and looking forward to more great videos!
Thanks for watching, Steve. And for the comments. Really appreciate the support!
Excellent review. I had a similar internal debate last year and ended up going with the RZ which is a far more economical choice compared to the Pentax. I would prefer the SLR ergonomics of the 67 but looking down at the RZ's viewfinder is a thing to behold. I mainly shoot digital but wanted a medium format option and the Mamiya checked off a lot of boxes for me. Can't go wrong either way.
Definitely can't go wrong either way. I'd love to own both! :)
Very quality video! But how do you convert the analogic photos to digital? With an hogh quality scanner?
The images in this video were all scanned at a lab.
Kyle - just purchased a 67. What neck strap are you using? Clearly need a sturdy one. Thanks. And I appreciate you creating and posting your great videos. MM
Thanks Mathew. Using a Peak Designs Slide SL-2
@@KyleMcDougall Thank you.
I love the 67, but I'm dying to try a 6x9. Looking at either an old folding camera or a fuji
Yeah, I want to get my hands on the 6x9 Fuji at some point in the future as well.
love your reviews! well explained, you seem fairly unbiased, which is understandably hard with the internet, which disputes everything (tbf i would defend every camera i use to the death). really good stuff man, look forward to more videos.
Thanks, Nick. I always try to share my experience and respect the fact that everyone has different needs, preferences, etc.
Respect for that beard.
Please more Pentax. Subscribed.
Hah, thanks!
I’ve been interested in this system a while, but I hear that people have to get it repaired quite often and repairs being expensive. What has been your experience in those 5 years, how many times did you have to send it for repairs and how were the repair costs?
Hi Kyle, This was a great find! Following you both here and IG! The images you have captured have been inspiring and beautiful! I miss my Pentax 6X7! As simple as it was... I loved it! I had the 105mm F2.4 and it made my images come to life and I haven't found anything come close to that experience since.
Hey, thanks for watching and for the support! Glad you're enjoying the vids. I'm keeping my eye out for the 105 at the moment. I feel like it's a must own lens if you have the Pentax 67!
Very well done, Kyle. I went with the Mamiya 7ii, this video makes me think hard, but it is as quiet as can be.
Thanks, Jacob. The Mamiya is legendary. It's a great camera, you definitely can't go wrong with it.
With the amount of interest in 67 cameras it just seems like the camera companies are missing an opportunity for sure, nice vids pal, I’m debating a mamiya af 645 atm as 6x7 is v sought after atm.
i love the sound of this shutter
that's the second time I've heard 'it's a deal breaker' to mean the opposite of what it should mean, is that phrase reversed in the US/Canada?
Great video, as always. Looking forward to seeing more from this and the 4x5
Nope, not reversed, just me rambling on and not making sense.
Great video! I've always wondered but where do people get those rectangular lens hoods?
YEEESS sick man great review. I could watch these ALL day
Thanks!
Great photos and video again man!
Only a few videos in and you're already becoming one of my favourite photography channels on RUclips :)
I've got the Pentax 6x7 and love it! I agree that the size/weight thing is slightly overhyped - especially given the heavy-ass, over engineered lenses that people like to stick on their incredibly beefy DSLRs with vertical grips these days...
So far I've been relying on lab scans for my medium format work (I scan my 35mm stuff myself) and though the quality's nice, the resolution's not that high. That said, at these lower magnifications, I find I can get sharp images hand held at 1/60th and sometimes even 1/30th of a second when I'm using say my 55mm lens. The trick is I focus, frame my shot, use the mirror lock up and take the photo quickly.
With good hand holding technique, I find that the bulk and weight of the camera actually reduce the amount of hand shake I get, relative to 35mm cameras.
Agreed Dominic. Some of the DSLR/Lens combos can get pretty big these days. The 67ii isn't a camera I would bring everywhere, but it works for most situations.
Great review and I'm a huge fan of the Pentax67ii camera. Quick question, how in the world did you get the rubber eye cup on?
I'll have to check again, but I remember it being pretty straightforward.
Hey Kyle, just bought a 67 ii partially based on your review. A question I can't find an answer to - does your LCD panel stay on when the camera is turned off (L)? Mine will show "Film" and the frame number. Thanks if you can help - Rick
It does, Rick. Yes.
@@KyleMcDougall Thanks for the reply, Kyle. Fantastic camera - extremely happy with 105mm f2.4 and 55mm f4.
I’m now looking for one! Best review ever, please do more :)
Thanks for watching!
obvious question, I have Pentax Spotmatic f with other 35m mount lenses, will these lenses mount with Pentax 67ii?
No they won’t.
I really enjoyed this a lot. I just happened upon your channel today and, I have to say, you do a great job with your videos.
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying them!
I've always, always been in love with the Pentax 67. But I settled on the Mamiya 645 and I have the rb67. What I really wanted to know is where did you pick up that blue camera strap that you were wearing in the video? I love it. I'm wondering if it will fit both my rb67 and the 645? Thank you.
It’s a Peak Design Slide strap. And yes, it’s interchangeable between camera models. It comes with “lugs” that release.
@@KyleMcDougall you are the one that got me to fall in love with the Pentax 67 in the videos that you were doing the over and under expose on Portra 400 and Fuji pro H. I did enjoy and learned from the videos, but I was wondering if you were thinking about doing that type of videos again like say with Ilford HP5 or with any other back and white film? Thank you
I don't have any plans for those films, at the moment, mostly because I don't shoot much B&W, only colour.
Really great video. Just wondering, what kind of strap are you using?
Thanks! Strap is here: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1141808-REG/peak_design_sl_t_2_slide_tallac_navy_strap_caramel_leather.html
Vid and shots are top notch man!
Thanks, Jason.
The biggest stereotype of that camera is striping the winder. As someone who worked for Bruce Webber I can say without question you need to advance the film with a steady smooth motion. We traveled with 8 bodies. They went down all the time.
Thanks for the heads up. Something I try to keep in mind!
Amazing review! Thank you! Do you have any plans on reviewing the 75mm F4.5 Shift lens for the pentax 67 System?
I will take this over an X-pan ANY DAY, for one this is medium format and has more to offer, to me the X-pan being 35mm is just a 1 trick pony. Great review.
Nice review. Do you use mlu function when shooting the camera handheld?
Thank you. I don't use MLU while handholding, but I also try not to shoot any slower than 1/125.
I like the 67 because it’s basically an upscaled 35mm slr, and i love that.
Hi everyone, I'd like to ask. Since I'm so lack in photography and stuffs but I'd like to try to get involved in this club. Soo.... is this camera using film roll or SD Card?
It uses cassette tape
Maybe you can help me. I want to buy a Pentax 67 but I am concerned about the thorium blended glass in some of the older viewfinders that came on the Asahi branded finders. Since you know about the system, do you know what the manufacturing dates are when they stopped using thorium in the viewfinder glass? Thank you!
Sorry, Zach. I don't know much about the issues with the viewfinder glass.
Love your channel, looking forward to more content🤙
Thanks!
Solid video! What tripod works best for the Pentax 67? Also, where'd you get that eye cup?
Thank you! I've been happy with my tripod setup. Benro 3 stage carbon legs and a Markin's Q20 head. As for the eyecup, I ordered from Amazon. It's original Pentax.
Thank you for the reply, much appreciated :)
Great video. Thank you
RS. Canada
Great videos you’re creating.
Btw I know you’ve mentioned a lot of 6x7 cameras, but don’t think you’ve mentioned the Fuji cameras (Texas Leica). No interest in those? I know their rangefinders & so you may not care for them.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks! As I've mentioned, I'm not a huge rangefinder fan, but that doesn't mean I'll exclude them (next episode is the Nikon S2). I've been eyeballing the Fuji 6x9 for a while now and may look to pick one up to try out in the future. Cheers!
The Fuji GF670 might be a good option for a 6x7 travel camera since it's relatively compact. But, it has a fixed lens and it's not cheap!
just a side question about your beautiful video production - what do you use to record your audio? It's really crisp
For the most part, audio is recorded on a RodeLink wireless setup.
I absolutely love this channel now. holy shit how have i missed this for so long
Thanks so much!
I noticed you have the strap or the wooden grip. Which do you use more?
I would say that I use both equally. I do like to walk around and hold the camera by the wooden grip. But keep in mind that I'm not much of a street shooter, so I'm not logging huge miles with the camera.
yeeees always look forward to your videos man! keep the great content coming!
Thank you! Appreciate it.
Gorgeous! Which is the best meetering mode?
I typically just stick with centre weighted.
Kyle, I just found your videos -- very good content. Where did you get your camera strap here? Thanks!
Thanks, Jeremy! The strap is here: www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&c3api=1876%2C72666209402%2C%2C&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk5-5yqDB2gIVzrXACh1NvA9xEAQYAiABEgKPOfD_BwE&is=REG&pcur=CAD&sku=1141808
5 lbs is a big camera I used one for a couple of years also, really liked it!
Where’s your camera strap from , I really like it for my Pentax , please and thanks , great video as well !
Thanks! The strap is a Peak Design Slide
Pentax 67 👍 and does Super portraits
I shot GM670 fujinon as daily 6x7 documenting fujinon glass is my weakness
Only missing close up and hard to find(
What camera do you film all your videos with? thanks
Sony A7RII
I would love to see a BTS video - stellar work
Nice colours in the video
Another fantastic video! Looking forward to more.
Thanks, Jake.
Did you shoot that stuff around Fort Ord?
Great review Kyle, very thorough! Do you mind sharing where you purchased the strap?
It’s a peak design sling strap in blue, I like it, wondering if it’s comfortable with this camera.
@@CarlosLopezMedrano I ended up getting a blackrapid sport strap. It makes carrying this camera and my 6x6 so easy.
Yes! I have the Black rapid sling strap for other cameras and I gave it a try with the Pentax and it works great. Better to have the weight on the shoulders than the neck for such a big camera.
what film were you shooting in this?
Probably portra 400
Hey man!? Was this shot in Charleston, Sc? lol
It was.
Subscribed today to the channel and already have a new video. And it's not an April Fools' one.
Nice video Kyle, I've got the RB67 w/ Prism finder- wish it had a proper handgrip after this video.
Cheers Connor! Always the left hand grip as an option for the RB.
Ah yes I do have the hand grip but I primarily use the prism finder which makes the whole thing way to much for the grip to handle IMO
How much does it cost to develop photo's and what resolution can the negatives provide?
Depends where you get them developed. As for resolution, also depends on what size negative. 35mm will be very different than 6x7.
Matt Day sent me your way. Great stuff, man. Subscribed.
Thanks, man! Really appreciate it!
I’d love to invest in a 6x7 system. It’s just the cost that’s the barrier; especially as I’m mostly a hobbyist...
You can pick up an RB67 for a good price.
Kyle McDougall been looking on ebay, to be honest you’re right, it’s a lot cheaper than I’d thought it would be
I'm gonna ramble, sorry... I won't argue that the grip is transformative, and out of the box on the 67ii.... and I won't argue that the 67ii is more capable overall in the lineup (I've shot a 67 for about 5 years and a 67ii for roughly 2 years), but there are multiple aftermarket right-hand grips available for the 67 (and earlier) that are just as transformative and, largely, is what stalled me getting a 67ii for 2 extra years. I say that just because, if that's the deal-breaker, the deal isn't broken and prices for the 67ii have gotten so nuts-all-over-bananas in the past couple years that most would be well-served to get the earlier version and add the grip.
For my part, I shoot them very differently now. The 67ii is used (by me) with its excellent meter in a more free-form manner, whilst the 67 I always use with the WLF or meterless prism (something I'd swapped over to from the metered variety almost immediately) because it shaves weight and I use that camera for more thoughtful, composed shots anyhow with off-camera metering. But the thing of all this for me is that if I were to keep just one of these, I'd hold onto the 67. With fewer electronics, it's longevity is much more assured, and repairs when they come will less expensive and easier to source. And secondly, there's just something more visceral about the 67 - it's different, it's more... I don't know how to describe it... "present" I guess.
But in any case, unless you're CERTAIN the 67ii is for you, just get the earlier version and add the grip. You may never leave.
Excellent quick summary of the legend. :)
Great points to think about for anyone interested in one of these cameras. :)
I love my pentax67II
Amazing vid as always!
Thanks!
Can you provide some info on the camera strap? I shoot with an RZ67 and this strap looks like the real deal. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Kyle...I'll give it a look.
Not a problem, Mike. It’s a great strap.
Still rocking this these days or do you have another favorite MF in 2024?
The 67ii is such a nice camera, much better then the original ergonomics wise. The mirror slap is a downside though, I love that with my Mamiya 6 (new version) I can get sharp images at 1/8th handheld
This Guy actually takes good photos
love your videos man! New SUB! Hope you come to HK to shoot soon!
Thanks, Nicholas!
I thought my Pentax 67ii was a beast too....until I got my hands on a Mamiya RZ67 Pro ii with prism finder😳
Now that thing IS a beast😜. I’d question whether it’s even realistically hand-holdable.
Yep, the Mamiya systems are really big, especially with the prism finder.
For travel theres the gf670 which i used to have but sold for the pentax, or Makina 67 cameras
Wonderful video.
What is that camera strap you are using?

Which film was he using?
Amazing video. Great colors.
Thank you, Cole!
That moment when you see Bon Aire from the beach you grew up on... St. Petian for life
This camera is superb
Using 90-105mm even 1/60 with proper handling it will won't cause any shake.
where did you get that camera strap? is awesome
