Infect is incredibly tame compared to 2 card combos that just win you the game, which EDH is full of. Sure, you can easily take out 1 person with poison counters, but actually killing the table is very hard.

nah. bro poison counters are an absolute cheat code. the "BuT ReMoVAL" excuse basically means you have to build a deck specifically to beat another type with butt loads of removal instead of what you trying to do with your deck.

You make a lot of good points on the nuances of the mechanic. The main complaint I often hear is that the 10 damage threshold is too low, especially compared to a commander’s 21. That being said, I would personally rather get eliminated quickly by infect and start another game than sit through hours of people struggling to decide on how to resolve their extra turns or super-friends’ abilities.

People hate on infect because it suddenly turns the game into a countdown. The second you get hit, you are on a ticking timer and suddenly everyone has a common enemy, even if the infect deck is arguably one of the narrowest, weakest decks in the game. As long as you have blockers, you're safe. Most infect creatures have high CMCs which slow them down by a lot. Fynn was a great way to help even out the playing field, suddenly nobody wants to risk ganging up on the pseudo-infect deck because most of the time it means you will take losses trying to and could risk the win, but even still all you have to do is keep Fynn out of the game long enough to pull ahead and have a numbers advantage.
It's very hard to ever win a game as an infect player, but even still most of the time in a 4-player pod, the other 2 losers lost only because they devoted most of their attention to the infect player and not the real threat. There are so many stronger and faster ways to win the game now, I will never understand the infect hate compared to them.

Infect is missing a lot of support that most strategies in Commander have recieved in recent years.
And it shows, I've put together Ramses Assassin Lord, running an infect strat for my current commander group.
And there were no complaints, and the list was easily outpaced by most everyone at the table I've since shelved the decklist and moved the cards away for a bit until a time where something new gets printed to help buff the strategy.

To me infect is just another win-con. No reason to get salty about it. I've played against infect decks and they're generally not all that powerful. They can usually kill off one person, but typically get beat before killing the table. Atraxa or other proliferate can be a problem, but that's why you run removal. In fact anytime someone pulls out an Atraxa deck (infect or not) I straight up tell them I'm going to focus on keeping it off the field or removing it when it hits the field. The only time I've seen or used Triumph is to win the game so no problem. Just shuffle and play again.

Personally, I am a fan of Infect; it's one of the few mechanics that can prod me out of my slower, less aggressive play style. I don't usually like building a huge force, going sideways, and winning, I guess; I prefer alt won conditions, and the long game, but it usually bites me, and due to certain other Commander choices, among my play group, its usually rare to be able to rely on your Commander; it WILL be dealt with almost immediately, just to force that tax up, and so if my Commander is already going to draw that kind of flak, it might as well be Skittles, and maybe I'll even win. As for Infectvin the future, I'm totally good with them keeping it an effect attached to a specific setting, sort of like Werewolves in Innistrad, and so I'm totally fine with it requiring the set be connected to Mirrodin/Phyrexia to have any, but them I hope the set there, coming after the Brothers Wat, WILL have some new Infect cards.

I think infect is fair if you consider how small the creatures are besides Blightsteel... I have a Yidris infect deck and in a 4 player commander game it is incredibly difficult to win because most of the time you become the archenemy of the game once the table knows your strategy... If you play horde magic, that is the recommended way to handle poison counters on the horde.

  • @MTGSavage
    @MTGSavage 2 года назад +2

I'll be honest I run Triumph of the Hordes in EVERY green deck I have if not almost every green deck I have. The reason for it? Two main reasons. Green needs a card other than Ashaya to race to Cyclonic Rift. And secondly green needs an earlier finisher against faster combo decks.
I played maybe 4-5 yesterday and I won 3 of the 4 with Triumph of the Hordes. The Mirum player needed to be taught a lesson not swing all out unless he plans on killing me because then he has to worry about crackback and being potentially killed. He was killed by Triumph twice in combat and the other way was by pumping my creatures and then casting it and then Chandra's Ignition and that required set up but I could have also won through combat as well. If you don't want to lose to Triumph of the Hordes don't swing out all the time and run more removal 🤷‍♂️. If I lose to it I'm like touche you got me, well played.

It uses Mimeoplasm, several tutors, LOTS of proliferate (Contagion Engine AND Clasp, Inexorable Tide, etc), and no, I do NOT have a copy of Blightsteel in the deck (even though I do HAVE a copy of him).
Get a Decimator Web or, preferably, Ichor Rats out, get a poison counter on someone or EVERYONE (with the rats) and proliferate like crazy. If I have Conjuror's Closet out, even better the longer I can keep them on the board.
Fill my GW with choice creatures, and bring out Mimeoplasm (with a Negate and Dispel in hand for dual countering from opponents), then have him copy Spinebiter, with the counters from the biggest thing I can find in a GY (hopefully I can get my Death's Shadow in my GY by then).
If I've held them off long enough, and can keep a counter in my hand to hold off a board-wipe, Phyrexian Swarmlord can take care of the rest along with proliferate.

I think infect struggles to find a place. In mid and lower power where creatures matter and beating through is the main win con, it feels bad to have a triumph played on you and just die out of nowhere. On the other hand, in high power and up, the mechanic is too slow to keep up with many combo strategies, and most colors that run infect strategies don’t have, or can’t afford to have as much interaction to make it consistent enough to beat a full pod of 3 high power decks.
I think the main issue is just how polarizing the mechanic is in commander. I can see how it “feels bad” to many lower power players, but I’ve em ever seen it be successful in high power.

Infect is scary on paper. In practice it just leads to salt and less than fun player interactions. The Infect player only gets a few avenues to kill people. They all cause the table to turn on them. Go wide and proliferate. They made themselves archenemy. Go single target. They usually kill one person early ruining the game for them and get heavily targeted afterwards. Give infect at instant speed and try and deal the damage all at once. This feels cheap and if it doesn't kill everyone at once has the same outcome as the first 2.

I played infect in standard. It’s powerful but it’s honestly boring. Aggro is a perfectly fair strategy, it just doesn’t offer a lot of dynamic gameplay. I think an infect combo that doesn’t really use combat damage is more interesting, but it’s still very meh. Winning through combat isn’t as much of a thing the higher the power level of the pod. The endgame of “count to 10 instead of 40” doesn’t offer a lot of variety, and when it’s neither very powerful nor does it feel that good to play, why should you play it?

  • @JujuInFlames

I think people forget that in commander most people are playing a lot of combos and interaction, go wide or voltron decks do need ways to keep up. A 3 card combo and attacking with a couple 1/* infect creatures to get 10 damage seems somewhat balanced to me. I play a Tetsuko Umizawa deck where everything has a power or toughness of 1, so I mean ya how does a deck like that kill 3 players without infect?

There are so many mindless and lame ways to win with two or three card combos in commander. Infect is very fair seeing as you are winning through combat which takes some setup and is very difficult to kill everyone at once. Besides triumph of the hordes which is a great win for go wide decks, Infect cards are super overrated. Blightsteel colossus might be the most overrated card ever in commander. Honestly the card is awful. It's slow, way too expensive, easy to counter and gets hated out of the game as soon as it is in play.

I have less of an issue with infect nowadays with the advent of combo heavy power creep laden decks. My lingering issue with infect is that, unlike constructed formats, poison counters in Commander are disproportionate. Where constructed is half your life total, commander is still 10 and not half your life total. Especially with how easily you can spam 10 damage in the format, it can be really predatory on at least on player in the pod.
