This is an overlooked Jerry Goldsmith MASTERPIECE. it’s majestic and Roman but also ethnic and Jewish. As good as anything he’s ever done! Just brilliant. Everyone remembers Patton, the Omen, Star Trek, etc.,and the others but this is at THE top of the list. Just incredible. Listening to it almost tells the whole tale of the story.
Man, I was so young when they played the movie on TV. I remember watching it one whole month (one part per week). I've loved the theme ever since. Great movie, great composer.
Jerry Goldsmith can take any subject, any event, any story, any characture and his music becomes the focal point to the movie. Take a bad movie and add a Jerry Goldsmith score and now you have a better movie. The man was a master. Only John Williams can come that close to being the equal master. I own a lot of compositions by both and have not heard a bad composition yet by both.
I hear about it at random recently and have rlly wanted to watch it but there's no good format I can find to watch it, youtube upload only has half and is cropped to all hell
Sheer brilliance. I defy anyone who watches this magnificent mini-series not to see the basic similarities between the world then and the world now. Some things never change. And this theme music by Jerry Goldsmith is pitch perfect for the subject matter. He deserved his Emmy, no mistake.
I own the Mini Series on dvd, WOW, Awesome Score, it gave me Goosebumps when I first saw it in 1980's and again when I got it on Dvd. Also Spectacular Acting by Peter O Toole , Anthony Quale and Peter Strauss. thanks for the Score my friend. They Dont make Epic TV series back then or even Now. We got Tooooo many Reality Shows. Thank Goodness for DVDs and Our Choices to watch.
This is great music. I think that this was Anthony Quayle's last performance. I recall this as a child seeing Mr. O' Toole as a Roman general saying after all of this effort, in effect...all that I have conquered is a rock...why??? So many lives lost! I do not want anyone's life to be taken from them. People can be horrible, but forgiveness is in the language.
Not nearly enough people know about this mini-serues and frankly, that's a crime. The two characters are so compelling, complex and human and their relationship is wonderfully well done. The story is brilliant. The sets are great. The costumes are great. The music is fantastic. Something NEEDS to be done about this. Most people have heard about I Claudius but next to nobody has heard about Masada. We need to build a bigger audience for this series because it absolutely deserves it.
I guess it's like what I heard once on the History Channel. A whole lot of people don't know this story because no one wants to hear a story about the warriors killing themselves and their families. An archaeologist said that the Jewish rabbis, sages, and mystics refrain from telling this story as everyone dies and people want a happy ending like Queen Esther saving her people or Joshua winning the Battle of Jerico. I didn't know about Masada until I was in my 20's. I knew about the Holocaust long before I ever heard the story of the Siege of Masada.
One of my son's bought me the DVD. He remembered watching the mini series...we all did. He knew his dad and I really enjoyed it. Peter O,Toole and the other actors, particularly Peter Strauss were amazing. A masterpiece.
I saw the miniseries on ABC in 1981 & recorded the end theme on audiotape using a mono cassette recorder held up to the TV speaker. I never knew who the composer was until now. Thanks.
Love the music.....Jerry Goldsmith an incredible master! The series was fantastic! And....the opening with the Israeli Army so moving. When I visited Masada, this movie stayed on my mind. The history, the honor, the triumph!
I watched this series 35 years ago when I was 12. Don't remember much of it but I still recall the theme. Great music last forever. Another great score is the theme to Battle Star Galactica. A Must to search n listen it.
Me encantaba.
I remember buying this record when the miniseries first came on tv. I loved it and the series. Jerry Goldsmith, in my opinion, was a great composer. He came up with so many great scores. And this one is no exception. With all the percussion, tamborines and horns, it's almost like he and the orchestra are actually JAMMIN. Anyway, may he rest in peace. He is surely missed.
I liked his Japanese scores for the 1970 Tora Tora Tora. To me it was an authentic Japanese man to be honest. Funny thing is that a brief moment when the two Japanese ambassadors visited Hull's office after their unfortunate timing error was the only time actors from both nations were in the same scene in the film. Mastery.
Massada was & always will be, an iconic piece of cinematography with an equally incredible score that lent itself well to the small screen. A true classic in every sense of the word!
Goldsmith was attached to the project when it was intended to be a movie and when it was transferred to TV, he was only available to score the first half. Morton Stevens scored the second half using Goldsmith's material. It won Goldsmith's fourth Emmy. The original LP/CD release did run a little slower than the TV broadcast music.
Not quite. "Masada" was indeed originally meant as a film, but that was in 1970. In the 1980s it was always meant to be a mini-series and when Goldsmith joined up it was a four parter. However, after huge delays (mostly because of the gruelling shooting schedule in the decidedly unfriendly deserts of Israel) Goldsmith ran out of time and had to go work on other projects. Morton Stevens composed parts three and four not using Goldsmith's material but rather inspired by it (trying to make it sound seamless and stay true to Jerry's spirit).
Regardless of all that worked on this music, it has Goldsmith flare, which is always top shelf. Didn't know about Stevens' work; he did a great job of it. I love this faster recording more so than the slower version in the film. What a dance this would be!
the wallpaper with those facial expressions really captures what played off in the series, the roman guy is looking up and almost amused by his task thinking"how do i get them from there...",while the guy on the right is determined to persist no matter what.
The rebels chose to die because the Roman breech of their defenses was imminent, and there was no place for them to go. Their women would have been defiled, their children murdered, and their men enslaved. They left their supplies so that the Romans could see that they chose to die as free men, that they were not starved into submission or suicide. I have always admired the rebels. The life they would have had once conquered would not have been worth living for those who survived.
No - they revolted in stubborn obstinance, for the second time, to the freedom that the Romans generally did provide to them. The Jews had their own courts, their freedom of worship, etc. But when Jesus Christ, the Messiah, came and they rejected Him, the entire course of history changed. The Jews that accepted and recognized their Messiah became the Christian Church - the fulfillment of Judaism. Those that rejected Him (because they sought after a military leader) killed their own Messiah - and they, rather than obtaining the earthly Jewish kingdom which they sought for, based on the "traditions of men" and not on the word of God - were smashed and scattered into diaspora. My point is this - the "rebels" were rebelling against God Himself, and they suffered accordingly. This is nothing to be admired.
@@sweettendercharles1556 WE the Jews won. Our rebels of Masada are our heroes. We Jews are still here, the Romans disappeared. Nobody can make us disappear thanks to G-d of Israel the real and only one.
Though I didn't watch the mini-series for around 20 years, but this music still plays in my head. Like the one of Ben Hur (I mean "the Ben Hur movie of a sane person").
The score right here sounds wonderful. I saw the movie in it's entirety last year, as my library carries the movie and, while it is sad that the Jewish fighters felt they had to kill themselves, this score is as majestic as the Hatikvah and the Exodus theme. This song can be a battle cry for the Jewish race. I have heard that the Israeli army is one of the best armies in the world. I guess when you have people in your family tree like Moses, Joshua, Abraham, and David, you would be a fighter and the Jews are, since they have survived for thousands of years and have never been destroyed.
Masada means fortress. I saw the miniseries about her and fell in love with it.built by herod the great.the place of the confrontation of the idealists Eleazar and silva
Espectacular. 🤝🇦🇷
They would have been dragged in chains through the streets of Rome and then cruxified or sold into slavery. The majority of the defenders were not experienced fighters, but old men, children and women, so a fight to the finish was out of the question as the legionaires could have disarmed them with ease once the walls had been breached. The galant defence of Masada is remember today, precisely because the Romans were denied their victory.
Thats why I love watching TV from 80s prior, like Gerry Andersons series or Battlestar Galactica, shame is I grew up early 2000s, and not with epics like this, though i did def watch movies of the time luckily
