Wonderboy is the true story of the formation of Tenacious D. JB and Kyle were both members of the same theatre group in the early 90's. They originally saw each other as rivals because they were both going for musical comedy bits and roles. They each had their individual strengths that made them each unique but comparable to each other. Kyle was a classically trained musician and Jack had a knack for comedy and improvisation. They finally decided to join forces and Tenacious D was formed.
@@RHCole Obviously the hydra was encountered well before demons and devils started coming after them, and the Fenix came along long after those encounters. It makes you wonder what supernatural creatures they have engaged with that the rest of us are all unaware of.
Next you have to do "F*** Her Gently". Yes it is a naughty song, and yes it is the third song of their first album you've experienced. But it's a classic. As you are in on the joke, making you uncomfortable is half the fun. Also this is a perfect musical soundscape. High on my playlist regardless.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass formed Tenacious D as a comedy rock group in 94, had an HBO series from 97-2000, and their first album dropped in 2001. If I remember correctly, their debut album was the first time they did music with a full band.
i thin alot of peple really underrate how talented gass and black are. the hbo show, had a segment where kyle was giving birth? its amazing to see their longevity and influence on the culture.....WITH MIND BULLETS!!!!
@@anonymoustechnician2935 I straight up don't remember them in that movie. Like I remember the movie well, I thought, but this surprising information lol
This song is one of several the band did about their purported backstory. “The History of Tenacious D” is another grandiose tale “chronicling their rise to power” as Jack Black puts it. All are equally absurd and mutually contradictory in the best way.
From what I heard... Jack Black and Kyle Gas met each other in a comedy troupe, and they didn't get along at first. They were basically competing to be the Musical talent in the troupe, but eventually realized that they made an amazing duo, and Tenacious D was born.
Tenacious D is only Jack black and Kyle Gass, But for their first studio album they had additional musicians playing with them Dave Grohl - drums, guitar on tracks 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 18, 20, 21 Steve McDonald - bass guitar Warren Fitzgerald - lead electric guitar Page McConnell - keyboards Alfredo Ortiz - percussion on tracks 3, 15, 18, 20 Woody Jackson - sitar on track 1 Andrew Gross - strings on tracks 4, 6 Ken Andrews - guitar on tracks 3, 10, 11, 15 John King - echoplex on track 7 Jack Black and Kyle both play accoustic guitar. Kyle is a much better guitarist than Jack though. When they tour they often have a backup band. And the other Studio Albums also have additional musicians. For the Original Tenacious D tv show had just the two of them performing with their accoustic guitars. I assume they wanted a harder rocking sound so they worked with outside musicians for help.
The thing about Jack Black is that he always wraps his voice with comedy. As if he's not quite sure he's good enough. Well...he's good enough. An excellent and unique voice.
I think that is the biggest issue I have with Jack. It feels like he's trying too hard, at least to me, so he goes over the top a bit much at times. Don't get me wrong, he is funny, and I love his musicality and ability, but he can be a bit overwhelming, like he's on just a bit too high a heat.
They played with the Denver Symphony Orchestra at Red Rocks. Epic, nothing short. The weather turned windy as shit and made it even more legendary if you were there
Finally. The members are Jack, Kyle (both on guitar and vocals), Steven McDonald on bass, and Brooks Wackerman on drums. I think that's the current line-up.
@Jesús Garza I didn't even know he was in A7X, lol. Never really cared for them much after their punk days, or whatever you want to define that era as.
Brooks is no longer with them since joining a7x - they do have another guitarist aswell who does most the solo and electric work - I'm unsure on his name though.
Current line up is Jack & Kyle, John Konesky on guitar, John Spiker on bass and Scott Seiver on drums. Brooks hasn't been in the band since he joined A7X in 2015.
Tenacious D has 2 official members, but they have a backing band. Dave Grohl from Nirvana/Foo Fighters played drums on this album and the movie soundtrack, he also played the devil.
Now that you've heard their totally accurate backstory through Wonderboy, you also need to hear their totally accurate backstory through the songs The History of Tenacious D and The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage. The first is a chronicling of their rise to power, and the second tells the story of the consequences of that power.
Another fantastic story song by them is "City Hall" it's very rock opera-like. Hold on to your pants, though. It's a 9 minute Monster with skits and dialogue held within.
I'm here!!! Been a fan for about a month now. I find your reactions very well done. It's nice to see reactions without acting like a fool to get followers.
What I like about Tenacious D is that they aren't trying to be anything. It's clearly just Jack Black and Kyle having fun and not taking themselves too seriously. Like they are both incredibly talented, if they wanted to they could easily make a band that did more serious music and probably write some of the greatest songs in music history, but instead they choose to just have some fun and really live in the moment. I think it's pretty great. They joke a lot about being the "Greatest band ever" but they obviously aren't being very serious when they say that and it's nice to have some fun sorta goofy music by people who aren't so self-important like a lot of musicians are.
Usually during live shows, or anything where they make an appearance really, they do have people as band members. I don't really know a ton, but it seems to be that Jack and Kyle are the face while they have support from a band in the background.
I remember watching this premiere on MTV back in 2001, I was hoping you would get around to this one :) Dave Grohl ( of Nirvana, Foo Fighters etc fame ) did a lot of the drumming and also played Satan in the pick of destiny movie. There was also a Jack Black and Kyle Gass cameo on the Foo fighters learn to fly music video.
In case you weren't aware, there's a legitimate former title contender in the UFC that comes out to this as his entrance music... Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson, currently ranked #7 in the welterweight division. It's effin' awesome.
That bemused smile while listening to The D is one I’m quite familiar with. I so enjoyed watching you enjoy something that has given me so much joy through the years. Thanks! 🤘🔥🎸😈
Mostly it's just JB, Jaybles (Jack Black) and KG (Kyle Gass), but for recordings and live proformances they have John Konesky - guitars, backing vocals, John Spiker - bass, keyboards, piano, backing vocals, and Scott Seiver - drums, percussion, piano.
