Yup, pretty much. The sad thing is that he thinks it's fine because a pet store probably said it's fine. "Starter pets" are aften neglected because pet stores sell them as an easy pet so they can make money. It makes me want to open a pet store of my own and sell animals with proper setups and care sheets.

@@peachyedits22 yesss. Personally I have a local fish and reptile store which is honestly amazing. I have a healthy bearded dragon that I've had for 2 years now that I got from there. In a Petsmart I've seen all of the ghost shrimp dead, just sitting in their tank.

Do not put two bettas in the same tank without a divider. They will fight each other. I would say get silk realistic plants with non neon gravel. I would also recommend at least a 3.5 gallon tank with a filter 😁

@@evanescent.6156 don’t put to bettas in the same tank they are Siamese fighting fish and will kill eachother. I suggest at least 5 gallons for each fish. The can live in harsh conditions but I highly do not suggest it because it will make your bettas depressed and can cause many diseases. You should get a heater and a filtration system. A bubbler is not headed and could stress your bettas out. Give them some great hiding spaces but also leave space for them to swim. That’s pretty much it hope these tips help.

NOOO CHRIS you misunderstood them 11:53 he says the owners of these fish had a 20g overstocked and he gave them an empty 20gtall in order to divide the stock they had so they had more swimming space with 40g total but the bad fish owners bought more fish instead of dividing the stock they had over the 2 tanks. the OP of the post just gave these people a free empty fish tank, he didn't give them any more fish than they already had.

@molly howell OP in the post says he gave their neighbours a empty 20gal for FREE. The fish tank the neighbours were keeping was overstocked ... OP thought the neighbours were going to split the overstock into two tanks. But they instead filled the new tank with more fish.

I call them “fish-sized coffins”. I had a random lady at Petsmart get really mad at me because she had 3 bettas at home in fish bowls “that are perfectly happy.” I asked her if she was qualified to make that assessment.
I’m just so over those damn bowls. Stores shouldn’t be able to sell them as anything other than decór.

My grandmother loves fish. I repeat LOVES fish. She has 16 100 gallon tanks but the thing is she only keeps 5-6 fish in each. Just so they can all get 20 gallons or so to themselves. That my friend is some fish love. ❤️

Look for second-hand used tanks.
People sell those all the time that include the filter, heater, hood at most and if you're lucky they'll have some other stuff lessening the price for whatever else you need.
I got a 10 gallon with 2 heaters, 2 filters, 2 air pumps, and a lot of other stuff just need better substrate (mines wayy too colorful for my liking).
Also helps if you get a tank that doesn't need PLANTED plants (Hornwort, Floater plants, Java, Anubis are great plants for DECOR that doesn't need to be planted with certain substrate), or look for some cheap silk plants (Petsmart has cheap but great products to look at and a rewards program).
Amazon (if its less expensive than Petsmart) and Aliexpress (only for hammocks, nets, thermometers) are good as well.
Just keep looking around but I recommend getting second-hand used tank first.

Literally last year I was talking to my mom about wanting goldfish but that it would be expensive since you need like 20 gallons for one and increasing by like 10 gallons per goldfish or something along those lines and she was just like "well we have tanks (10 gal tanks) and a fish bowl downstairs". I just kinda facepalmed because even when I was in the midst of explaining that I wanted to make a healthy tank for them she missed the key points.
I went to petco to buy neon tetras for my tank and my sister started freaking out because she wanted a beta. I told my mom I would give her my filter cartridge so she had some beneficial bacteria but she needed some plants and gravel. She picked out NEON GRAVEL AND FAKE PINK PLANTS. I’m so glad I was there to not let that happen.

@@RosesLotusViolets some of them have unhealthy dyes, and can stress out your fish. Plus fish prefer natural looking substrate. I managed to wipe out a small tetra tank with colored gravel, yes I'm an idiot. I have learnt from that mistake and I hope no one else uses colored gravel

He's thinking of a vasectomy. Circumcision is genital mutilation regardless of gender. It amputates the most enervated parts of your genitals (male foreskin, female hood and/or clit). Never acceptable to do on an unconsenting child. No issue if an adult modifies their own body.

I've had a betta. His name was Buddy. He lived 7 yrs as a healthy betta. I was 7 at the time. I do miss him. He survived a fungal infection, dropsy and more. The cause : snails. I hope he's happy. Somwhere
The tiny tanks remind me when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, my teacher had a blue halfmoon betta I think? But she kept it in the cup that they sell it in the store. The 2nd week into school the betta died, when I told her, she said, "They don't live that long anyways". Lol.

:0 the fish stores literally say to put it into atleast a 5 gal right away because they always die in store in the cups if no one buys them so if you buy it has to go in tank right away. that teacher is cruel. this is why no one should be allowed to buy fish unless they are informed completely before buying. my one betta has a ten gal shes happy but i wish i had the space for a 20 gal.

The clip with the egg in a bag is from Barb's Buzzin. They have a RUclips channel, actually 2 channels, and they are very conscious and responsible aquarists. They do drip acclimation for new fish, and built a large above ground pond/pool size "aquarium" in the back yard for their larger fish. They are based out of Florida. One of the things they do is buy live bait from a vending machine outside of a local Bass Pro shops which has gotten them some average fish, a tarantula (dead serious, saw the video, they kept it as a pet), and some more expensive fish as well.

9:50 I get the point, but some fish do get scared easily--and they remember. A few weeks ago I had a snail invasion from a plant, so I physically went through removing the snails. Long story short, my betta was fine (I think he understands that I'm maintaining the tank). The experience terrified my neons--they've only just started coming around again.
My tank is in my room, and I often look over and see my betta chilling where he can see me. I know he has associated me with food, but it feels nice having him there. It's like we're just hanging out, and when I go and sit in front of his tank he'll find a place to lay down and we just look at each other lmao, I cant imagine him just not coming up to greet me. Makes me wonder what that owner was doing to make his betta not associate him with something good.

I honestly think everyone who houses a fish in an enclosure that focuses on scaping/appearance rather than the animal, should look into invertebrate care. You can set up beautiful bio active enclosures that usually aren’t so large, but MUCH more fit for whatever is living there.

Getting your fish to associate your movements with something positive... I never really thought about it but yeah. My crown betta Ginger always looks so eager to see me because she knows that I'm almost always bringing food so she get all happy and hangout near the opening to her tank. She never gets spooked when I'm near just checking things out and making sure she's happy and healthy. Good times. 😂🤣🤔

I remember my first Betta.
6 years i had him, in a 20g tank. Live plants, a couple guppies that he...well they were his food source. Tank was mostly self sustaining actually. Sometimes i would have to scoop the extra guppies out, but mostly he ate them before they got big enough to be an issue.
He would also rub along my finger if i held it in the water.

My betta used to be in a five gallon and is now in a heavily planted 20 long and she seems so much more curious and happy. (If anyone wants to try kuhli loaches with bettas, it worked great for me with no issue) I definitely agree that bettas should be giving space and enrichment.

The op at 11:55 is saying that the person with the snails had all of their fish in a 20 gallon, so op gave them an empty 20tall hoping that the neighbor would reducing the overcrowding problem and divide their fish between the 2 tanks. Instead the the nehibor took that as a sign to buy more fish. So the op was just trying to make the situation better for the fish.
My brother used to have two glow fish in like a 3 gal and I used to tell him alllll the time to clean it or at LEAST fill up the water because he used to let it get like 1/3 full and it had MOLD in it, and then one died and he cried. Long story short, the other has been living happily with my tetras in one of my community 20 gals since then
Last time I checked fish don’t burrow so u don’t need 65% substrate, it’s not a fossorial tarantula
2:03 The main problem is why is the substrate as deep as half the tank itself? It is basically reducing the size of an already small tank even smaller by half.
The video of the betta turbo in a vase makes me sad...my dad has a betta that looks just like that betta and hes such an amazing fish...always swimming around, flaring, and has so much personality...my dad loves him and takes great care of him!

@@evanescent.6156 hello, it is adviced that bettas are kept in separate tanks as they can be fairly aggressive to one another. If you want to get a betta and have another fish live with it you can get a couple neons or danios perhaps even a snail but even then you can run the risk of the betta showing agression to the other fish so alone is adviced. For just one betta it is recommended you have at least a 3 gallon tank but I'd recommend 5 as it's easier. Betta should have heated and filtered water and water changes should be done often. If you want further advice RUclips is a great option for research, I believe Chris has also done a couple of videos on bettas that you can check out as well. If you have any further questions though I am happy to help! :)

Hey Chris, you probably won't see this, but I love your videos, and you actually convinced me to upgrade my betta from a one gallon to a five gallon tank :D I was given my fish without any instructions on how to take care of it, but I've learned a lot from watching your videos. Now, my dilemma is that I'm a college student without very much time or money. Can you give me tips on how to decorate my 5 gal tank on a budget? I currently only have fruity pebble gravel xD

Regarding the Gouramis, I will say that the more densely planted the tank, the less likely you'll have issues with mixing them - this even applies to bettas in a sufficiently large tank (more than 6 feet in length). Still not recommended in smaller tanks, though.

I made an impulse buy of a Betta for my daughter right after covid. I had him in a 2gal tank I didn't know better. So after research we moved him to a 10 gal and he was so happy. Put a bunch of real plants in we loved him for 2 1/2 yrs. He was blue and red and his name was rainbow.

You misunderstand. The OP gave a 20-gallon aquarium to that person, who had 2 goldfish in a 20-gallon aquarium. the OP did this thinking that the person would separate the two goldfish, one in each aquarium.

i got 2 goldfish a day apart, they where my uncles but he didn’t want them anymore so i took them in. they came to me in a 12L tank ( 2 GOLDFISH! ) far too small tank, they had no substrate and a single shell from the beach. as soon as i got the fish into my care searched my shed for my old 55gallon tank that my gerbils used to be in. i got my dad to drive me to the pet store and i got an oxygen pump, a filter and a uv steriliser. i also purchased many plants and moss balls but the fish just seem to chew on the plants which i expected. They seem to be doing okay now and are fun to watch, they chase each other around the tank and one of them enjoys going up to the water pump and letting the pressure push it around. they’re doing so much pressure and i’m so happy 😊

I bought what was supposed to be 2 baby female bettas for my son's tank several months ago (a few weeks apart) & after a little while we realized one was labeled incorrectly & it was a male. I didn't want to put one in a regular fish bowl, I always feel bad, so I kept an eye on them together for maybe 2 months until I got my own tank.. The male wasn't ever mean to her, he just flirted way too much.
Now that she's in my tank (w/ an African Dwarf Frog, another female betta, guppies & cory & panda catfish) she's blossomed into this sweet, confident fish; she's even seemingly loving towards the younger betta & oddly enough, the frog. Both bettas love the frog actually, they all hang out together. It's really funny sometimes, Kiwi, the frog, has accidentally landed on the older betta's back as if she was a horse. I expected her to panic & swim off but nope, she acted more like a parent giving a child a piggyback ride. I really need to get it on camera if it happens again. 🤣
I have watched the video before and those guys got a mystery box of fish and they had no idea exactly what it was until it hatched. But they do seem to have looked after it, did research and gave it quite a big tank to hatch and grow in. They already had an established aquarium for it

12:20, OP was saying their neighbour had those fish in a 20 gallon, and they gave them their old (empty) 20tall so they could split them up. Neighbours didn't, they just got more fish to put in the 20.

Just going to say that it is possible to have a male and female betta in a tank together permanently without stress. Same with angel fish and gouramis. I have a 60 gallon tank with 3 Angel's, 4 gourmais (2 dwarf 2 regular, all different kinds) a male and female betta, 6 tiger barbs, 2 guppies, 8 neon tetras, 2 large gold mystery snails, and 3 bristlenose plecostomus. They are all happy, thriving, vibrant, friendly, no nipping, chasing, anything of the sort. It's possible to do all this with the right fish, the right set up, and the proper aggression levels of each individual fish
@12:00 I think what they're saying is , they gave the neighbor another 20gallon in hopes that they would separate the fish giving them all more room, but they instead interpreted the gesture as an invitation to buy even more fish to pack into the two 20 gallons
Yesterday I went to PetSmart to check out the fish. Was looking for cardinals but they only had neon tetra. Not only was there a dead fish (or several) in every 5th tank, but the harlequin rasboras were labeled as glass catfish

I remember that in kindergarten this classroom had three goldfish in a about five or less gallon.
It had barf gravel with all the rainbow colors and it had plastic SpongeBob things and it was disgusting.
Me and the other kids always thought they were so lucky to have fish and now I'm realizing and remembering the dark side of kindergarten.

Outside of the solo cardinal tetra I feel like the stocking in the tank wasn’t very bad plenty of planting for fish to hide if any mild aggression and those are some of the most friendly Gourami and a solo angel are a lot more friendly then groups especially a pair. But that’s just me tho. Great vid as always tho!
I think what OP was saying was that they already had an empty 20 gallon tall and was hoping the owners of the other 20 gallons would separate their fish but instead they just got a ton more fish. OP didn’t give them fish, I think OP gave them a new tank for the fish even if it wasn’t ideal.

I have 4 "harlequin Rasboras" in my 20-gallon tank, but "Neon Tetras" are so pretty!

My Nana (grandma) recently went out with me to buy a fish. She had this weird bowl thingy, about five gallons, that's hexagon shaped and has a thin neck at the top. I picked out a Betta for her (she thought they were pretty), and we got the decor and stuff. She is in love with the stupid fish, so as I was giving her instructions, she was writing them down on a piece of paper. I'm tempted to get a 10 gallon tank off of Kijiji for her fish, so that she could have plants, enough room for a filter, heater, etc... and maybe some tank mates like cherry shrimp or neon tetras.
