The only thing that still gets me are people who use the "it's my style" excuse when their work is called into question. They break the rules without understanding the rules, which makes their breakage of them meaningless and hollow. I just can't get over the mentality those people have because it reminds me of all those people in my art classes who were only there for the "easy A" and got upset when they didn't get one.
Precisely. You don’t know how many times I’ve been on an art tutorial and there are people in the comments that say “Um, there’s more than one way to draw something! Don’t say what’s wrong and what’s right!” I wonder why they even go on the tutorial if they don’t want to hear other people describing their vision and process.
So true! Those "but it's my style!" people often don't realize that artists with more experience will immediately know it's an excuse for not understanding the fundamentals, anatomy, etc. When the "it's my style" phrase is true, the artist doesn't even need to state it. We all understand by looking at the art that the artist made the conscious decision to simplify/exaggerate/enhance something using their vast artistic knowledge.
right??? Some people just like to copy random stylized elements without even knowing what they’re stylizing or if they should even use it. a good artist would be able to explain their design choices, a bad artist doesn’t know why they do what they do and just uses a lame excuse. Also the fact that people let small techniques define their style. Timmy, the random, solid black shadow under your character’s neck doesn’t make it “your style.” In fact, you just copied the technique from someone on social media. It’s a combination of techniques and how you interpret things that makes your art yours.
Also theres a difference between realism and hyper realism. Theres plenty of room for expression in realistic art by the way you use colors, brush strokes etc. Hyper realism at best is the as good as the picture it is copying. You cannot make it better or more expressive.
Why settle for something that's only impressive when you can have something impressive YET expressive. The argument for hyperrealism in traditional medium is DEAD a long long time ago when photography surfaced.

I hate the feet thing. I tried to paint someone with their feet on the table multiple time, and their feet always look either too small or too fetishized. There is really no in-between
I wanna add something about the Last Supper: the painting isn't actually in Santa Maria delle Grazie Church but in the convent attached to it. Leonardo was commissioned to paint one of the refectory's wall and he decided to paint the Last Supper.Jesus and all the apostles are sitting all on one side of the table not only because it looks way better like that, but also so they could face the monks while they were eating, to create a sort of inclusion in the scene. Andddd it's really smart.
What if I told you that it was painted flat because it represents the Celestial throne of God, the Zodiac. Starting on the left with Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Gemini, Leo. Mary at Jesus' right is not Mary but Virgo, and has an Adams Apple, which is why it is being pointed at by Leo. Mirrored in the Sphinx, head of Virgo on body of a Lion, Leo. The Zodiac, or Mazzaroth, is the Throne of God in the Heavens. The 24 Elders, While the Kingdom of God is within you. Luke 17:21 2 sets of 12 Cranial Nerves.
Not just that but a painting of his Crucifixion was on the other side of the wall, so not only were they placed to face the monks/nuns, but Jesus is also looking to his future
Something I wish you touched upon is that the modern obsession with realism extends beyond even just visual art but into other mediums as well. I can't tell you how much I wince every time I hear a film being criticized for having 'unrealistic dialogue' or an 'unrealistic plot', particularly if the plot incorporates elements of magical realism. One of my favorite recent films is 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' yet time and time again people seem to complain about how 'bad' the acting is, how stiff and monotonous everyone speaks. People seem unable to grasp this sort of thing as a deliberate artistic choice that adds an extra dimension to the piece. I'd love to see more creatives out there like Yorgos Lanthimos or Charlie Kaufman, yet if box office numbers are to audiences seem utterly uninterested in anything that experiments beyond conventional depictions of human interaction. Video games seem to be the only medium where subversion of realism is commonplace, mostly out of necessity for gameplay reasons, historical technological limitations, and to avoid tedium, yet as graphics increase in fidelity, there seems to be this large push, particularly from AAA western developers towards this perceived ultimate goal of hyper-realism in both graphics and gameplay (see: Red Dead Redemption 2), and it is likely the reason why most games worth even playing these days are small projects coming out of indie studios.
To be honest the concept 'magical realism' itself only exists because of this. Because in the Englishspeaking world it is seen as distinct and noteworthy instead of just normal freedom of fiction. They also take this and emphasise it as distinct in their own works, which tends to the miss the mark as a result, a codified gimmick. But yeah. I think the attachment to supposed realism or accuracy, especially from laymen criticising something, is because they don't have anything else to say or aren't able to say anything else. It's the same with people focusing on worldbuilding, plot, and characters (that is, their shallow personal like or dislike, and nothing about the relation to themes and aesthetics and other factors together in a piece of media). Emphasis on these three things, especially when judgement of 'good' amounts to what they feel is realistic (which may not actually be so realistic but nonetheless tries to assume the authority of what is real/true/accurate), is because they don't understand the craft, they don't understand what makes a good story or experience. It is a kind of cultural decay and disconnect wrought by science literalism and abusing low-hanging fruit for content and gotchas. It's annoying because it's talking about anything but the actual work.
Not to mention the artistic choice within a realistic game like Red Dead Redemption 2, this game doesn't have the same realism as Naughty Dog games, or The Witcher 3 and recently Resident Evil 4 Remake, are distinct and unique visual choices each with a stylized realism whether it's good or not, but that is reduced to 4K and now look how the new generation is more realistic GTA 6 will be even more realistic and in the end, whatever the art direction that the company brought to this world.
Can we just talk about how realistic yet unrealistic anime is. Like sometimes it looks just like the real world, but then again the faces & stuff dont.
Man, whenever I watch this channel, it always seems to inspire me to paint and test my limits as an artist. Create. Experiment. Fail. Try again. It's hard to do that sometimes, but stuff like this reminds me it's always good to try to test yourself, experiment, and have fun doing it with art, and that it isn't so bad if you can't figure it out yet, you'll get it eventually.

I really love your shift from browsing DeviantArt to discussion of art things and history. I still love to see DeviantArt, but this seems more like your choice and it's very fun Edit: Realism is so overrated by many people, especially in elite art circles. Realism can be grueling, and take forever. I think in some ways, stylization can take just as much if not more effort than making art look just like real life, because you have to find out how to do it right. I prefer stylization over realism just because of how much people think realism is the only route.
i feel like i have a bit of a stylized-realism style in my art. it's hard to say for me since it's my style and i don't have too much knowledge of what certain aspects of art looks like, but i know i do mostly try to go for realism in my pieces, but most of the time i just end up putting a bit of a stylistic look in it. i think it sounds unique, although im sure other people have done this.
I have a way of drawing where I get references for what i wanna draw, i do a bunch of drawings of it as anatomically correct as i can, and then i stylize it. Its much more fun than feeling like you need to draw a hyper realistic painting of your subject before you can stylise
Some of the principles regarding stylization out there are great. There was an excellent theory on color theory for art that another youtuber did. I personally adhere to asymmetrical theory when taking extracting photos (extracted from videos) of sunsets amidst the landscape. Asymmetrical body language is also often considered very attractive for posing people for photographs. One artist whom I greatly admire is Claude Lorraine, he is a master of putting the most dramatic part of a landscape scene in the central focus, and his use of color is quite a feast for the eyes.
I just love how SolarSands started as a sarcastic critic of what's on deviant art and weird fetishes and moved to making deep analytical videos about various topics related to art. All with keeping the same level of entertainment as looking at some wierd kid's oc but gaining some information instead. Wow. I noticed that in a lot of experienced artists, they use blocks of colors instead sketching. I think it's a really useful method and makes things easier.
*I think art is about exploration.* Whether the discoveries made are good or bad I think it’s important to allow them to happen. Saying something should be only realistic or even only stylistic is something that stifles artistic exploration. You can call art bad or good, but to say that it shouldn’t exist at all is to put boundaries on art when art best grows through limitless possibilities for experimentation.
Oh my god. I was boppin to the music and I was wondering why it was so good. And then it struck me it's the soundtrack for Novalis in the original ratchet and clank. I love you so much. Thank you.
In the art school I got to, our teachers ask students: "Why don't you just take a picture of your subject if all you want to achieve is something as close to reality as possible?" As first year students this confused us at first, because like you said, many people think that more realism = better. But by not sticking to photo realism, you can add so much more to your work.
@@turbotrup96 the problem with realistic looking games is that they age very quickly, like compare Heavy Rain with Detroit, while stylized games are able to look good even today, for example compare Mario Galaxy and Mario Odyssey, even if Galaxy doesn't look as advanced as Odyssey, it still looks beautiful.

15:27 really put into words why I'm not excited to see someone's hyper-realistic portrait despite the obvious talent and skill. Another great video and love seeing your uploads in my subscription box!
That’s why I’ll only ever reach a realistic level of drawing purely for learning purposes; realism in the form that we see it in media like Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat/TikTok etc. today is almost always the same thing. No offense to those artists because it’s not easy to emulate real life, and I can appreciate a talented artist, but why would I want to see that when I see it anyways every day? I find it much more fun to push the boundaries of reality and create psychedelic pictures that stimulate the mind and catch your eye while making you really think about what you’re seeing; only instead of painting it, I’d like to make it move.
Yeah, as a practicing artist I found it pretty awkward and daunting; maybe a casual onlooker wouldn’t find too much wrong with it but I feel like it wouldn’t have been much of a sacrifice to make it more proportionally accurate..
Been there since one of his First Deviant Art rants. I love that he mentioned Spider verse! I absolutely adored the style choice in that movie and wish more shows or movies were like that. It was just enough realistic to be recognizable while also keeping the aspect of a more stylized comic look! Like adding the little comic words like "zap!" Next to a character. It's so unique in its own beautiful way 😌
I know you're joking, but for anyone who doesn't understand the thumbnail, it was a visual demonstration of the Last Supper's anachronistic qualities, altering it in a similarly anachronistic way that immediately stands out to modern viewers.
I doubt you will, cause most of them aren't even talking about realism when they talk about realism. They actually mean naturalistic laws, consistency and believable and/or convincing stylization. And most artists who hate realism and all the above mentioned (usually younger ones, anime or comic fans and excusing every flaw with 'iT's mY sTyLe!') are just not capable to do it or to learn it for the sake of convincing stylization.
Your last message reminds me of a quote: "'See, if you paint wrong because that's the best you can do, you just a chump. But if you do it because you want to? Then you're an artist.'" ---- *Unwholly* by Neal Shusterman
Sounds like my teacher in art school. His first sentence to my art (I was 15 or smth) were: 'Well, you suck. Like, you know NOTHING about anything. Good thing you're here, lemme teach you how to draw a f*cking straight line.' Best art teacher I ever had, actually.
When the average person talks about realism, you're right, that they're not talking about the 1840's art trend that created the name. They're probably not even talking about Soviet era "socialist realism". Instead, they're probably talking about photo-realism, or art that looks 'realistic'.
In short, they don't know what realism is, because calling very detailed comics realistic is something that shortens my life expectancy when I hear it.
To be fair to realism, it's the most logical starting point to literally any other style. There are elements of realism everywhere, from abstract to cartoonist styles , and it really helps to be good at realism if you transition to another style. There's a reason they say "If you want to break the rules you have to know the rules".
The thing is that a lot of people look a those hyper realistic drawings and think those are masterful crafts, they're good, but only in the technical side, in the artistic side they're really empty and boring.
this is what I was noticing when drawing, I didn't expect someone to point it out good shading can save a crap drawing bad shading can ruin a good drawing it's either not shade at all, or shade properly
I have to hand it to you man, your videos cover the grey areas. You really have created a catalogue of inspired videos. I know I’m late to the party but you got yourself lifer fan. Great stuff
No, like it's really obvious. Like the thing about Jesus' feet, there's a high probability that a model was present, but doing the feet realistically would take up unnecessary space, and therefore interest, in the picture. (Basically it's not supposed to be a fetish painting of Jesus feet.)
Something I've noticed on Reddit is that seemingly on some kind of schedule a hyperrealistic pencil drawing gets onto the front page. I feel like I see one every week or something, and they're always the same. The look like a photo of a face, but gray. Of course skill is good, but this is just so artistically boring. Realism can be absolutely awesome though.
interesting fact: in some of the previous last supper paintings (ones created before leonardo's) judas was the only one sitting on the other side of the table (the one who ends up betraying jesus)

This is insanely rare, and to find someone speaking to younger crowds its also making me more hopeful. I found your channel through a music channel, I think it was some audio illusions stuff. You've reignited a bit of me and I appreciate that. Keep it up, really excited to see where you go with this.
I once saw a digital painting of a photo of a seaplane above water. The artist made side-by-side comparison with the photo to show that the resemblance was next to perfect. Nothing was changed, the colors, object placements, all the details, everything was kept the same. The artist certainly had mad skills to be able to do this, but when I looked at the painting itself, I thought it was very unimpressive and uninspiring, and shouldn't be done as a way of art, although okay to just be a fun experiment. Surely that was unpopular opinion at the time, since then I've always been pondering if I was wrong. This video pretty much answered my question. btw I believe nobody knows how to pronounce WLOP's name, it's not in Chinese and likely isn't supposed to be pronounced. He's my favorite artist and the inspiration for me to pick up art at age 26.
I'll just use Solar Sand's pronunciation because is funny, "Wah lop". Also, yeah, as an experiment I guess it's fun for the artist to try to replicate a photo (not for me, I'm too lazy for that), but seeing it as art is just a little too much.
@@alainmarroquin5742 about the art thing I don't know what to say, but I think that you can still consider something good or bad, specially depending on it's quality, but that doesn't mean it can't be considered art, a famous example would be The Room, you know it's a bad movie, but that's what made it art, somehow.
@@alainmarroquin5742 I agree everyone has a different idea of art and just on this comment section you see people that don't like a style and they are saying it shouldn't be art for me even if the picture of a woman's face is old and unoriginal I look at the skill level people have to have to do it I know b I could never do something and make it look so much like a picture. I think that even if you don't like how something is done doesn't mean you should not consider it art because even a baby scribbling on paper is art to the baby and family too even if you think it's garbage.
Even if you don't have the necessary tools to complete a task, if you're determined enough you will eventually come up with a different way to complete said task.
I’ll be honest, as an amateur artist who want to be a professional but struggles with improving my art while worrying about “how do I make it more detailed so it looks more professional, should I make it more realistic or is cartoony ok, Am I not good enough” this video really helped my confidence and understanding of what realism is in painting and how to better my art. Thank u please keep up this good work.
In "The Things They Carried," writer Tim O'Brien made a distinction between "story truth" and "happening truth," and explained that a story can be realistic to how the narrator perceived it but not necessarily to how it happened objectively. Certain aspects of a story can be exaggerated or ignored in the way they would be in a real person's mind, just like in visual art.
You are the only other person ive seen that mentioned that book and im so happy Also! That book mentions that some things are exaggerated in order to catch people's attention and make them listen to the story.
I remember liking that book in high school, but now I barely remember anything about it. All I recall is someone getting “zapped while zipping”. I should probably re-read that
"Painting is not about replicating the world, it's about interpreting it, improving on it, showing something you see." - Carl Manfred, Detroit: Become Human
And I think on the other side of the coin, non-artists who disparage unrealistic art just don't get the artist or the artists goal in their work. Personally, I always admired realism (and romanticism) for the amazing skill of the production and attention to detail, knowing personally how hard it is to draw or paint something that looks real. Realistic work is impressive because it demonstrates control of the paintbrush, the pencil, the clay etc and I think it takes some maturity to look past that and find some deeper meaning. Most people don't know about the other features that artists take into consideration and controls, with just as much skill as the great painter or sculpter does. Things like composition and lighting, symbolic icons and cues etc are not even noticed. Lots of people just think 'it's pretty' or 'it's ugly'. It's the same with music and literature.
Fun fact I’m a botanist and fotos aren’t the pest pictures to identify a plants species is a drawing because a drawing is an ideal plant composed of many plants an average plant.
I genuinely needed this. Ive been hyper fixated on my own art and critiquing it in a way the is demoralizing or makes it out to seem unworthy of attention or care. I love making art and would love to do it for the rest of my life but kept telling myself its “not good enough” or “not realistic enough” when i myself don’t even look at and gawk over realistic looking art. Its always the artists that add their own unique twist on their pieces that draw me in and idealize them as id say my favorite artists. I shouldn’t be so scared to go outside the lines and make something that feels authentic and true to my view on nature and the world. Because art i create is supposed to be a fragmented look inside my view of the world and who i am. Might i just say thank you for this. You’ve said all the things i needed to hear.

Underrated comment
Yep

Andddd it's really smart.
it's like you're having the last supper with Jesus

Edit: Realism is so overrated by many people, especially in elite art circles.

Your last message reminds me of a quote:
"'See, if you paint wrong because that's the best you can do, you just a chump. But if you do it because you want to? Then you're an artist.'"
---- *Unwholly* by Neal Shusterman
Sounds like my teacher in art school. His first sentence to my art (I was 15 or smth) were: 'Well, you suck. Like, you know NOTHING about anything. Good thing you're here, lemme teach you how to draw a f*cking straight line.'
Best art teacher I ever had, actually.
When the average person talks about realism, you're right, that they're not talking about the 1840's art trend that created the name. They're probably not even talking about Soviet era "socialist realism". Instead, they're probably talking about photo-realism, or art that looks 'realistic'.
Or, as spoken, 1762881938191st portrait of random Instagram model
In short, they don't know what realism is, because calling very detailed comics realistic is something that shortens my life expectancy when I hear it.
To be fair to realism, it's the most logical starting point to literally any other style. There are elements of realism everywhere, from abstract to cartoonist styles , and it really helps to be good at realism if you transition to another style. There's a reason they say "If you want to break the rules you have to know the rules".
The thing is that a lot of people look a those hyper realistic drawings and think those are masterful crafts, they're good, but only in the technical side, in the artistic side they're really empty and boring.
@@crystalalumina if something Is good to look at It cannot be considered "empty and boring"
@@lucatriunfo8023 I said good, but only on the TECHNICAL side, which means that the technique is well made, but that's it, nothing special.
I feel like there a difference between learning\having to know the fundamentals and realistic art (an art style)
I agree
this is what I was noticing when drawing, I didn't expect someone to point it out
good shading can save a crap drawing
bad shading can ruin a good drawing
it's either not shade at all, or shade properly
This
personally i find it doesn't matter if the shading is absolutely picture perfect. if the shaping is bad, the art is bad.
I, too, remember the time in the New Testament where Jesus and the Disciples ordered the Mr. Beast Burger
When god predicted the end of the world, it was just a metaphor for Bee Movie 2
"And Jesus saith unto His disciples, 'Go ye into the city and find a baker, and from him ye shalt buy twelve Whoppers.'"

I have to hand it to you man, your videos cover the grey areas. You really have created a catalogue of inspired videos. I know I’m late to the party but you got yourself lifer fan. Great stuff
When you're such a genius that even when you make a mistake people are like "ya, he meant to do that" I love it
No, like it's really obvious. Like the thing about Jesus' feet, there's a high probability that a model was present, but doing the feet realistically would take up unnecessary space, and therefore interest, in the picture.
(Basically it's not supposed to be a fetish painting of Jesus feet.)
There is absolutely no way you would’ve ever convinced me I would willingly listen to art essays in my free time, but goddamn... such good videos man
Something I've noticed on Reddit is that seemingly on some kind of schedule a hyperrealistic pencil drawing gets onto the front page. I feel like I see one every week or something, and they're always the same. The look like a photo of a face, but gray. Of course skill is good, but this is just so artistically boring.
Realism can be absolutely awesome though.
3:39 I’ve seen a lot or beksinskis paintings but never his photos before. He’s got some hella good surrealist nightmare fuel work
interesting fact: in some of the previous last supper paintings (ones created before leonardo's) judas was the only one sitting on the other side of the table (the one who ends up betraying jesus)

@@billyandrew not quite. in those times a smaller penis meant the man was more... manly, masculine. thats how they interpret it
@@allier1867 Not exactly, no. Small =/= masculine. It meant _scholarly, intellectual,_ and having a small penis didn't suggest less sex or masculinity; just that the person was not ruled by their dick over their mind. Rather the other way around.

I really like that you're doing mind-expanding, highly critical art critique over a large swath of artistic subjects. This is insanely rare, and to find someone speaking to younger crowds its also making me more hopeful. I found your channel through a music channel, I think it was some audio illusions stuff.
Creating art is to mix what it means to you with what you want it to mean to others. You're definitely in touch with that too.
I hope a lot of different artists see your channel.
You should watch "The Art Assignment" they have a "Case for Photorealism" video.
I'll just use Solar Sand's pronunciation because is funny, "Wah lop".
Also, yeah, as an experiment I guess it's fun for the artist to try to replicate a photo (not for me, I'm too lazy for that), but seeing it as art is just a little too much.
No one should decide what should be considered art and what not, and decide what is good or bad is even worse
I'm really loving this new style of content, it's somewhat educational and really fascinating. Keep it up!

The thing is for you to learn the fundamentals and train them by putting them into practice, learn to apply what you like until you get very good.
You are the only other person ive seen that mentioned that book and im so happy
Also! That book mentions that some things are exaggerated in order to catch people's attention and make them listen to the story.
Love that book. I'm lucky enough to have a really cool HS English teacher and we studied O'brien in class. Great blend of fiction and memoir.
I remember liking that book in high school, but now I barely remember anything about it. All I recall is someone getting “zapped while zipping”. I should probably re-read that
Funny DeviantArt man to video making legend.

"Painting is not about replicating the world, it's about interpreting it, improving on it, showing something you see."
- Carl Manfred, Detroit: Become Human
I think why most and also I don’t really like hyper realism is that there are less choices to be make therefore less of the artist we can see.
Sounds like you are talking about photorealism though?
Olga Hein oh true yeah I think that’s what I mean
