Had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Donegan play in 1946 (77 years ago) at Indianapolis. Just came across this video playing a North Sea Jazz Festival. Still working it. FANTASTIC
Wild and beautiful soul!!! Love her much!! She died in 1998 (?) at the age of 75. Sorry I just discovered her but i am blessed to have discovered her thanks to you! Thanks for posting! Indianapolis 2023
Between pieces she walks around like an exhausted and stunned prize fighter getting her energy together for the next round! Certainly an athletic performance. What a force of nature!
Dorothy Donegan was a true, not just piano but musical virtuoso genius. An all time great pianist, another one that could master whatever genre she embraced. Mind blowing facility & technique.
@@ChuckParDue1953 Nat King Cole is an interesting choice, very understated -- I could never pick a top 5, as so many players have offered so many different things. Tristano, Hines, Gardner, Morton, Powell, Marmarosa, Waller, Gaillard, Kelly, Haig, Monk, Newborn... Do we base our judgement upon who best communicates the vibe they intend?
@@ChuckParDue1953 Yeah - you can hear how he affected his touch, the shaping of lines and working in ensembles. Likewise, Cole loved Hines and Wilson and you can hear how they influenced his perspective. From the rhythmic/ensemble side, I feel that Tatum encountered limitations in his approach that the next generation resolved. They all shared the music and elevated each other - yet the industry can only choose a handful to make household names.
Fascinating to hear this. I read somewhere that Oscar Peterson was a big fan of Dorothy Donegan. You can hear some of the Art Tatum influence in her playing, at times she has an Erroll Garner-ish sound too. For some reason women have often not been taken seriously in jazz, unless they are singers of course. She certainly deserves more recognition 25 years after she passed away.
Wow!!.😮...This woman is amazing...!?!?!?....😢...I have the same reaction as I did when I was first blown away by Phineas Newborn Jr !!! Oscar Perterson somehow got ALL THE GLORY over Phineas, too... aa well as Uncomprable genius ❤❤❤

I was a Jazz drummer back in the early 70's played in the big bands in Africa . I know all the Jazz great's , but , I just by chance I bump into her on the network , she is a very good entertainer .
Jealousy. That is the only reason I can think that she was not premiered around the world. She was able to symbiotically meld two completely different forms of music where others flailed. She was wonderful. This is amazing.
When you true to yourself don't expect The impossarios to be true to you. Most of them are exploiters, and. If no,t they have their favorite. And sometimes it's not one of the other but both.
Man! she’s puttin a hurtin on that piano! Sho’ hope those keys alright…! Amazing I’ve never heard of her until now. What an amazing talent, Dorothy Donegan! And I just love her style and passion, and the way she makes that piano a part of herself!
I wish I could have heard her way before this performance. A musician’s musician, a genius’s genius if there’s such a thing! There are no words that would adequately express this woman’s absolute ability to boundlessly fascinate the hearer.

I never saw Oscar play any double stops, and Tatum rarely and only briefly. at 9:15 she plays them and sustained them, they are the true signs of a great pianistic technique!
I have been a fan of yours since the first time I heard you play..I think I was a young teen. Dorothy Donegan is the best female pianist I have ever heard.
I did not see Dorothy in my life so far & I'm 85 . My loss , but at least I got to her her & I believe Dorothy was a true master of her instrument . A real force of nature . As for me I'm happy to have met her through this medium . Thanks for posting . .
What an eye opener , a great performance , unbelievable technical display off her style. The sad part is that she departed us . May she Rest In Peace .
Dorothy Donegan was the most sophisticated pianist on stage I have ever heard. - Charles Aznavour loved her play when she performed 1980 at Swiss romand Television in « La Grand Roue » in Geneva, Switzerland, with world renowned artists. Two concert followed at new morning jazz club and the public became crazy and the critics in « 24 heures » and other news paper loved her outstanding performance. Beat Mossdorf.
...I, like the universe, love her verve!...her style reminds me of how Oscar Petersen treated his auditors, and this version of Aznavour's 'What are You Doing...' is simply mesmerizing...I learn of her tonight...wish I had known of her before...another example of a colossal American talent, music personality...
Thank you so much World of Jazz for this legendary performance upload. Dorothy Donegan and Hazel Scott were among the greatest exponents of Jazz in history.
How is it possible that I had never even heard of this extraordinarily gifted pianist before? Not until reading the obit of an old friend who used to gig with her! Surely do wish I'd had the good fortune to hear her play live, which I'm sure wouldn't have been too far out of my way during my travels.
Гениально!!!!! Восторг от увиденного! Спасибо за знакомство с великим музыкантом! Оператору отдельное спасибо! Захватывающе и не отпускающие зрелище!!!
It's so amazing to read comments written within the past several days and some by people who knew her. I had a favorite, Gene Harris, who I listened to almost weekly before he started touring and has since passed away. You would enjoy him. But this woman is in a class of her own.
Dorothy is an amazing pianist who knows the instrument and the music without flaw. May God grant rest to her soul. Thank you for sharing this stellar performance.

One wonders how Dorothy would handle Rachmaninov in her own special way? Perhaps an inappropriate question but the lady has both energy and terrific ability so one just speculates on what magic might come about.
It's a good question. Her mentor, Art Tatum in the 1940's, was also a brilliant classical pianist in his spare time. Rachmaninov himself once commented that he could copy Tatum's notes but couldn't match his rhythm.
She has many unique stylistic elements and techniques distinct from Tatum. More polished in some ways and less repetitive than Tatum. I hear Oscar Peterson type motifs, so she probably influenced him.
